cryptnet.dll Missing: Repair the Windows Component Safely

cryptnet.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component, so the safest repair is to restore Windows system files rather than download a replacement. If a game, updater, or Windows startup program says cryptnet.dll is missing or was not found, the immediate cause may be Windows corruption, an incomplete update, antivirus quarantine, or a damaged application.

cryptnet.dll at a glance

Item Verified information
File cryptnet.dll
Description Crypto Network Related API
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Part of Microsoft Windows Operating System
Primary role Certificate, trust-list, revocation-list, and other PKI object retrieval
Normal 64-bit location %windir%System32
Normal 32-bit location on 64-bit Windows %windir%SysWOW64

Microsoft documents Cryptnet.dll APIs used to retrieve certificates, trust lists, revocation lists, and related PKI objects from URLs through CryptRetrieveObjectByUrl. It is not the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, or a separate redistributable.

Which cryptnet.dll version should you have?

Windows servicing changes the file over time. Its version, size, signature, and architecture depend on the Windows build, edition, language, and installed updates.

Architecture Historical examples
32-bit 10.0.15063.0, 10.0.14393.0, 10.0.10586.0, 6.3.9600.16384, and 6.2.9200.16592
64-bit 10.0.15063.0, 10.0.14393.0, and 10.0.10586.0

These examples are not a current universal file list. Microsoft’s Trusted Root update file tables show that both 32-bit and 64-bit copies have their own versions and sizes.

Do not use an old version as a target merely because it matches a search result. Windows should restore the copy appropriate for your installed build.

What the error messages mean

You may see messages such as:

The program can't start because cryptnet.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because cryptnet.dll was not found.
There was a problem starting cryptnet.dll. The specified module could not be found.
Error loading cryptnet.dll. The specified module could not be found.
cryptnet.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

The exact wording depends on Windows and the program that attempted to load the file.

A message naming C:WindowsSystem32cryptnet.dll usually points toward a Windows component problem. However, “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency needed by the loading program is missing. The named DLL is not automatically the root cause.

A “bad image” error, sometimes accompanied by status 0xc0000020, generally indicates that Windows found the file but could not load it correctly. Possible causes include corruption, an incomplete update, an incompatible file, or a damaged dependency.

A game or updater can mention cryptnet.dll even though it did not install the file. The application may use Windows certificate and network functions, causing it to be the first process that exposes a damaged Windows dependency.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary fix when the file is missing, damaged, incorrectly replaced, or producing a bad-image error.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired source.

Run DISM

  1. Save your work and close running programs.
  2. Open Start.
  3. Type Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell.
  4. Right-click the result and select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter and let the scan finish.

The command can take time and may appear to pause at a percentage. Do not close the administrator window while it is working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows, even if SFC reports that it repaired files successfully.

Microsoft provides the relevant procedures in its documentation for repairing a Windows image and using System File Checker.

What the results mean

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: SFC found no protected-file corruption. Continue with the application and update checks below if the error remains.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: Restart and test the affected program.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: Restart, run DISM again, and then run sfc /scannow a second time.
  • DISM reports that source files could not be found: Windows may need a matching installation source. Microsoft documents using alternate repair sources and Windows Update troubleshooting in its Windows Update repair procedure.

Running these commands manually is useful, but it can be difficult to tell which component changed when repeated repairs produce the same result. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and identify what needs attention; its free scan shows the findings, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for every cryptnet.dll case.

Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates

A failed or incomplete update can leave system components mismatched.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Open Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart when Windows requests it.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.

If the error began immediately after an update, open Update history and note the update that was installed. Windows may offer an uninstall option under its recovery tools, although the available choices differ between Windows editions and managed computers.

Do not replace cryptnet.dll with a file from another Windows build after an update. The correct version is supplied through Windows servicing.

Fix 3: Determine whether one application or Windows is affected

The scope of the problem helps identify the cause.

If only one game or application fails

Repair the application before making broader Windows changes.

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps and then Installed apps.
  3. Locate the affected program.
  4. Select its menu button.
  5. Choose Modify, Repair, or the vendor’s repair option if available.
  6. Restart the program.

For a game, open its launcher and use Verify integrity, Verify files, or the equivalent command. The wording differs by launcher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Microsoft Store or Xbox application:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps and Installed apps.
  3. Select the application.
  4. Open Advanced options.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Test the application.
  7. Use Reset only if Repair does not help and you understand that the app may lose local settings or stored data.

If the program still fails, uninstall and reinstall it from its official source. Reinstalling the game or launcher is the definitive fix when its own files are damaged, but it does not necessarily replace a Windows-owned copy of cryptnet.dll.

If several unrelated programs fail

Return to DISM and SFC, install Windows updates, and check security software. Several unrelated programs failing with a path under C:WindowsSystem32 is stronger evidence of a Windows component problem than of multiple independently damaged applications.

If every program fails or Windows is unstable

Back up important files and prioritize Windows recovery. Repeated bad-image errors, startup failures, disk errors, or crashes may indicate broader system or storage damage. Continue with System Restore or Windows repair options rather than repeatedly copying DLL files.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine carefully

Security software may quarantine a damaged or falsely detected system file. A file with the correct name is not automatically safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Open Protection history.
  4. Look for a detection involving cryptnet.dll.
  5. Review the full path, detection name, and action taken.
  6. Do not restore the file solely because the filename appears correct.

Only consider restoring it after confirming that it is the Microsoft-signed file in the expected Windows system directory and that the detection is a false positive. If the file was modified or replaced by malware, use Microsoft Defender and Windows repair tools instead of restoring an untrusted copy.

For a confirmed Defender detection, consult Microsoft’s Security Intelligence malware encyclopedia. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection or create a permanent exclusion as a first response.

After a suspicious detection, run a full scan. If malware may have changed system files, run DISM and SFC after the scan completes.

Fix 5: Handle System32 and SysWOW64 correctly

On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit copy normally resides in:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
C:WindowsSystem32cryptnet.dll

The 32-bit copy normally resides in:

C:WindowsSysWOW64cryptnet.dll

The names can be confusing: System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit applications. Windows uses file-system redirection so a 32-bit program receives the appropriate system component. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

Do not copy the 32-bit file into System32, or the 64-bit file into SysWOW64. Do not copy either file into a game folder as a workaround. Architecture, servicing, signature, and dependency mismatches can create new failures.

If you want to inspect a file without replacing it:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the path named in the error.
  3. Right-click cryptnet.dll.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Check the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Review the Details of the signature.

A missing or invalid signature does not by itself prove the complete cause, but it is a reason to use DISM and SFC rather than manual replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Review drivers only when the timing supports it

A graphics driver, chipset driver, security product, anti-cheat component, or network driver may interact with a game that also loads cryptnet.dll. A crash report listing the DLL does not prove that the DLL caused the crash. Windows lists loaded modules in many crash reports even when another component triggered the failure.

If the issue began immediately after a driver change:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Device Manager.
  3. Open it.
  4. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or System devices.
  5. Right-click the device.
  6. Select Properties and review the Driver tab.
  7. Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver if available, or install the current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  8. Restart Windows and test the affected application.

Do not use Device Manager to randomly replace drivers as a generic cryptnet.dll repair. Target the driver whose update matches the beginning of the problem.

Manually checking many hardware packages can mean hunting versions and guessing which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show driver findings; the free scan identifies reported issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is not required when the problem is clearly Windows-file corruption.

What not to do

Do not download cryptnet.dll from a random DLL website

An unofficial download can contain malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, an invalid signature, or a file with the right name but the wrong contents. It may also leave the underlying component-store problem untouched.

The safe sources are:

  • Windows component repair through DISM and SFC
  • Windows Update
  • A matching official Windows installation source
  • Microsoft recovery or repair installation options
  • An official Windows installation or recovery process

Never use a DLL download page as a substitute for Windows servicing.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft describes its purpose in the regsvr32 command documentation.

cryptnet.dll is a Windows API DLL, not an ordinary ActiveX or COM plug-in. Running:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 cryptnet.dll

is unlikely to repair it and may produce an entry-point error. It does not replace a missing file, repair the component store, or resolve a bad-image condition.

Do not install unrelated runtimes automatically

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET can be required by the application that reports the error, but they do not own cryptnet.dll.

Microsoft describes Visual C++ Redistributables as C and C++ runtime libraries in its latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable documentation. Reinstalling the correct VC++ package can repair a separate application dependency, but it is not the normal repair for this Windows DLL.

Install or repair those runtimes only when the application’s own requirements identify them, or when a separate error names a missing runtime component.

Fix 7: Use System Restore for a recent system-level change

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after a driver, update, cleanup tool, or system configuration change and a restore point exists from before the failure.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point dated before the issue began.
  3. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  4. Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.

You can also open Control Panel, select Recovery, and choose Open System Restore. System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft provides additional guidance in its System Restore instructions.

If no suitable restore point exists, continue with Windows recovery options instead of downloading a replacement DLL.

Fix 8: Repair or reinstall Windows as a last resort

Use a supported repair installation when:

  • DISM cannot repair the component store
  • SFC still cannot repair protected files
  • Multiple programs fail
  • Windows has continuing update or startup errors
  • System Restore is unavailable or unsuccessful

Back up personal data first. Microsoft’s recovery options describe available reset, recovery, and update-removal choices. Microsoft also documents reinstalling the current Windows version while preserving personal files, apps, and settings on supported Windows 11 installations in its repair and reinstall guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact options depend on your Windows edition, build, installation media, and device management policy. Read each screen carefully before confirming a reset or reinstall.

When to seek more evidence

If the error persists after Windows repair:

  1. Record the exact error text and code.
  2. Record the full path shown in the message.
  3. Note the failing executable, such as a game, updater, or startup service.
  4. Check Reliability Monitor for the first failure date.
  5. Review Event Viewer for application and system errors at the same time.
  6. Check whether one program or several programs are affected.
  7. Note recent updates, driver changes, cleanup tools, or malware detections.

This information helps distinguish a damaged Windows file from an application crash that merely occurred while cryptnet.dll was loaded.

FAQ

Is cryptnet.dll safe?

The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component used by CryptoAPI network and certificate functions. Safety depends on the file’s path, digital signature, and integrity, not just its filename.

Is cryptnet.dll part of Windows?

Yes. It ships with Microsoft Windows and is not a standalone application runtime.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reinstall Visual C++?

Not specifically to repair cryptnet.dll. Install Visual C++ only when the affected application independently requires it or reports a separate VC++ runtime problem.

Should I install DirectX or .NET?

Those packages are not direct repairs for this Windows DLL. They may matter to a particular game or application, but only if its own requirements or error messages identify them.

Why does only one game mention the file?

The game may be the first program to call a Windows certificate or network function after the system DLL became damaged. Verify or reinstall the game, but also run DISM and SFC if the path points into the Windows directory.

What if the error says the specified module could not be found?

Check whether cryptnet.dll itself is absent and whether the message names a dependency or application path. The wording can refer to a dependency rather than the named DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the file from another computer?

No. Different Windows builds, architectures, updates, signatures, and dependencies make manual copying unsafe. Use Windows servicing or matching official repair media.

Why is regsvr32 cryptnet.dll not recommended?

regsvr32 is for DLLs with COM registration entry points. cryptnet.dll is a Windows API DLL, so registration is not the normal repair method.

What if SFC cannot repair the file?

Run DISM first, restart, and run SFC again. If DISM cannot find repair files, use a matching official Windows installation source as its repair source or proceed to supported Windows recovery options.

What if the error started after malware removal?

Run a full security scan, do not restore the file solely by name, and use DISM and SFC to restore protected Windows components. Investigate any confirmed detection through Microsoft’s security guidance.
