cryptngc.dll Is Missing: Repair Windows Without DLL Downloads

If Windows reports “The program can’t start because cryptngc.dll is missing from your computer,” “The specified module could not be found,” or “cryptngc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows,” do not download a replacement DLL. cryptngc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component associated with Microsoft Passport, the predecessor technology for Windows Hello for Business.

The 60-second answer

Install pending Windows updates, restart, then repair Windows from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Run DISM first and SFC second. Microsoft recommends this order because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions.

If the error names one application, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer after completing the Windows repair. Do not copy a DLL from a download site into the application folder.

What cryptngc.dll is and where it belongs

Microsoft documents Passport APIs and the Passport Key Storage Provider as part of the credential and key-storage technology that preceded or supports Windows Hello-related functionality. The file may therefore be loaded indirectly by Windows sign-in, credential services, Explorer, Windows Hello, or an application using Windows security APIs. No single game or application is established as its universal trigger.

On a normal Windows installation, the native file is usually located at:

%windir%System32

On 64-bit Windows, Windows also provides the WOW64 compatibility directory:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%windir%SysWOW64

These names can be confusing. System32 is normally the native 64-bit system directory, while 32-bit processes are redirected to SysWOW64. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

A public record lists version 10.0.18362.329 as a 64-bit file of about 477,696 bytes. That record corresponds to the Windows 10 version 1903 era and is not a current universal version for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

Why the error appears

The message does not always mean that the named file alone is missing. Common causes include:

  • A damaged or missing Windows component
  • An incomplete Windows update
  • Antivirus or endpoint security quarantine
  • A damaged application installation
  • A missing dependency of cryptngc.dll
  • A wrong-architecture or manually copied file
  • Windows Hello, Passport, TPM, or credential-state problems
  • Disk corruption, malware, or profile damage

The wording “specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by cryptngc.dll is missing. A “bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, incompatible architecture, a damaged dependency, or broader Windows damage. It does not by itself prove that the file is malicious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart

An incomplete update is a common starting point for system-file errors.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on restarting.
  6. Start the affected application again.

Use Microsoft’s guide to install Windows updates.

If the error started immediately after an update and continues after repair, use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, and choose a point from before the problem began. System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs while leaving personal files intact. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process.

Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

This is the most important repair for a genuinely missing or corrupted cryptngc.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the affected program.

SFC may report that it repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. If it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports unrepaired files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace the example path with the actual source. The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and servicing level. Do not use an arbitrary Windows folder.

Repeatedly hunting for file versions and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a system file, although you should not assume a detection is a false positive.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Open any detection involving cryptngc.dll.
  5. Check the original path, detection name, and action taken.
  6. Run a Microsoft Defender scan before restoring anything.

Restore or allow the file only when the original location and Microsoft digital signature are trustworthy, and your security checks show no compromise. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the device at risk. See Protection History in Windows Security.

If the file was removed from System32 or SysWOW64, repair Windows with DISM and SFC rather than downloading a replacement. If the detection returns, run a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan.

Fix 4: Repair the application that shows the error

If only one application fails while Windows and other programs work, its installation may be damaged or it may contain an incorrect private copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the affected application.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair, then test the application.
  6. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
  7. Otherwise uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher.
  8. If the launcher provides Verify, Repair, or Verify files, run that process.

Do not copy cryptngc.dll into the application directory unless the software vendor explicitly documents a private, matching copy. A Windows system DLL should normally load from the Windows system directory.

Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not a verified fix for cryptngc.dll. Those packages matter only when the error names one of their own files, such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll.

Fix 5: Check architecture and dependencies

Do not move files between System32 and SysWOW64 as a guess.

If the message says “specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency rather than cryptngc.dll itself. DISM, SFC, and an official application repair are safer than trying to identify and copy individual dependencies.

Fix 6: Troubleshoot Windows Hello or TPM symptoms

If the problem is a failed PIN, biometric sign-in, or credential operation rather than a missing-file dialog, repair the sign-in state instead of replacing a DLL.

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Sign out and sign back in.
  3. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  4. Expand PIN (Windows Hello).
  5. Select I forgot my PIN or Change PIN and follow the prompts.
  6. Test Windows Hello again.

Microsoft documents additional steps for Windows Hello PIN errors, including errors such as 0x80090029 and 0x80090031, in its Windows Hello troubleshooting guidance.

Do not clear the TPM casually. Clearing it can invalidate Windows Hello credentials and affect BitLocker-protected devices. Back up BitLocker recovery keys first, then follow Microsoft’s TPM firmware and clearing guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Device Manager is relevant

Driver reinstallation is not a general cryptngc.dll fix. Use Device Manager only when the failure began with a TPM, biometric device, BIOS change, or vendor security-software problem.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Security devices and inspect Trusted Platform Module 2.0.
  3. Also inspect Biometric devices if fingerprint sign-in is affected.
  4. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  5. Read the Device status message and error code.
  6. Install the driver or firmware only from Windows Update or the computer or device manufacturer.
  7. Restart and test Windows Hello.

Manually searching through many hardware-driver versions can be tedious when the failure is tied to an outdated TPM, biometric, or security driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; installation is handled by the full version, and driver updating remains relevant only when diagnostics connect the problem to that hardware.

Do not use Windows Features to register cryptngc.dll. Windows Features can add or remove optional components, but cryptngc.dll is not repaired by enabling a random feature.

Fix 7: Reinstall Windows components without deleting personal files

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the installation, use a Windows repair reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now, where available. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. See Fix issues by reinstalling the current Windows version.

If that option is unavailable:

  1. Obtain official Windows installation media.
  2. Start Windows normally.
  3. Open the media and run setup.exe.
  4. Select Change what to keep.
  5. Choose Keep personal files and apps.
  6. Continue only after confirming that choice.
  7. Complete the installation and test the application.

Use Microsoft’s installation-media repair instructions. Back up important files before any repair installation.

Should you run regsvr32 cryptngc.dll

No. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command. Running it against cryptngc.dll can produce another error without repairing Windows.

Microsoft documents the intended scope of regsvr32 and self-registration requirements. Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update, or application repair instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you download cryptngc.dll

No. Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match its dependencies. Manual copying can also conceal the real problem in the component store, application installation, or security software.

The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows recovery or installation media, and the official installer for the affected application. Microsoft documents manual replacement only as an advanced fallback after SFC identifies a specific unrepaired protected file and a known-good copy from the same Windows version is available.

FAQ

Is cryptngc.dll legitimate

Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with Microsoft Passport and Windows Hello-related credential technology.

Is cryptngc.dll part of Visual C++

No verified evidence supports that conclusion. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable solely because cryptngc.dll is named in the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does an application mention a Windows system DLL

Applications can call Windows credential, sign-in, encryption, or key-storage services indirectly. The application may expose the error even though the damaged component belongs to Windows.

Can I copy the file from another computer

Normally no. Windows build, architecture, servicing level, dependencies, and digital signature must match. Repair the local installation first.

What if the error says “specified module could not be found”

The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing or damaged. Run DISM and SFC, then repair the application if only one program is affected.

What if the problem continues after all repairs

Check CBS.log, review Windows Update history, verify the file’s path and digital signature, run Microsoft Defender Offline, and use an in-place repair installation. Consider a reset or clean reinstall only after backing up personal files and recovery keys.
