cryptopp.dll Missing: Trace the App Before You Repair Windows

“The program can’t start because cryptopp.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” The cryptopp.dll error means that Windows could not load the Crypto++ library required by a particular application or game.

cryptopp.dll is not a Windows system file, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET component, or device driver. It is an application-owned DLL from the Crypto++ cryptographic library. The safest repair is therefore to identify the program requesting it and repair that program, rather than copying a replacement into a Windows folder.

Which fix applies to you

Use the path that matches what happened:

  • One program stopped starting after an update, cleanup, migration, or reinstall: repair or reinstall that program first.
  • Windows Security recently detected or quarantined a file: check Protection history before reinstalling.
  • The file exists beside the program, but Windows still reports an error: suspect the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build, a damaged DLL, or a missing dependency.
  • Several unrelated programs fail: check Windows Update, then use DISM and SFC for possible Windows component corruption.
  • The problem began after installing an unofficial, modified, or cracked application: remove it and reinstall a legitimate copy. Do not restore an unverified DLL.
  • You are considering regsvr32, System32, or a random download: do not use those methods for this file.

What cryptopp.dll is and why it is missing

cryptopp.dll is commonly identified internally as Crypto++® Library DLL. Crypto++ is an open-source C++ cryptographic library originally written by Wei Dai and now maintained by the community.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DLL is normally installed with the application that needs it. Windows searches the application’s own directory when loading private application dependencies, so a legitimate copy will commonly sit beside the program’s .exe file. It is not normally installed in:

The name can appear unexpectedly because users usually install the parent program, not each library it uses. A game launcher, business application, utility, or older program may have included Crypto++ without displaying it as a separate component.

The error can appear in several forms:

  • cryptopp.dll was not found
  • cryptopp.dll is missing
  • The code execution cannot proceed because cryptopp.dll was not found
  • There was a problem starting cryptopp.dll
  • The specified module could not be found
  • cryptopp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error

These messages are Windows loader errors. They do not, by themselves, prove that the Crypto++ project or the DLL is defective.

Fix 1: Identify the application that needs the DLL

Do this before downloading or replacing anything.

  1. Note the program name shown in the error window.
  2. Close the error and try starting likely programs one at a time.
  3. Check the shortcut you used:
  4. Right-click the shortcut.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Read the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
  7. Note the executable name and its folder.
  8. If the program is launched through a game or software launcher, open that launcher and check its installed library.
  9. If the error appears during startup, check recently installed or updated applications in Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

The requesting executable is more important than the DLL name. Several applications can carry different private copies of Crypto++, and replacing one application’s file does not repair another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you cannot identify the program, use the timing of the failure:

  • Started after an application update: investigate that application.
  • Started after antivirus activity: inspect quarantine.
  • Started after moving a program to another drive: reinstall or repair it in its new location.
  • Started after restoring an old backup: restore the application from a complete, compatible backup.
  • Started after a Windows upgrade: repair the affected application before repairing Windows itself.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application

This is the most likely fix because cryptopp.dll normally belongs to the application that requests it.

Try the built-in repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Repair normally replaces damaged application files while preserving configuration and user data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.

Some desktop programs do not provide these options. Use their own maintenance tool instead:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Look for setup.exe, repair.exe, a launcher, or an uninstall entry with a repair option.
  3. Run the official installer.
  4. Choose Repair, Modify, or an equivalent maintenance option.
  5. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  6. Start the program again.

Use a launcher’s file verification feature

For a game or launcher-managed application:

  1. Open the official launcher.
  2. Find the affected game or program in your library.
  3. Open its menu.
  4. Look for Verify, Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair.
  5. Let the launcher complete the scan.
  6. Start the program from the launcher.

The exact label varies by publisher. This process should restore the application’s intended cryptopp.dll, rather than substituting a generic build.

Uninstall and reinstall from the official source

If repair does not help:

  1. Back up saved games, templates, profiles, or other application data.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Download the installer from the application’s official publisher or use the official launcher.
  5. Install the program again.
  6. Start it before adding mods, plug-ins, or third-party patches.

Do not assume that the newest standalone Crypto++ DLL is compatible with an old program. The application may require a particular export set, application programming interface, legacy build, FIPS build, or processor architecture.

Crypto++ documents an old 5.3.0 FIPS DLL as a legacy and deprecated module. That history is one reason a current general-purpose Crypto++ release should not be substituted for an application’s original private copy.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus removed the file

Security software can quarantine an application DLL after an update or after the application directory changes.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Open any entry that mentions the affected application or cryptopp.dll.
  8. Read the file path and detection details.

If the file came from a legitimate installer and you have verified the application’s source, use the available Restore or Allow on device action only when you are confident the detection is a false positive. Then repair or verify the application so its files are restored consistently.

If the file came from an unofficial, modified, or cracked program, do not restore it. Remove that software and reinstall a legitimate version. A DLL can have the correct name and still be unsafe or incompatible.

If quarantine keeps removing a freshly restored file, do not repeatedly disable protection. Contact the application publisher or obtain a clean installer from its official source.

Fix 4: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit match

Crypto++ has documented 32-bit and 64-bit DLL variants. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit DLL, while a 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A wrong-architecture file can produce messages such as:

  • “The specified module could not be found”
  • “This application was unable to start correctly”
  • “The application is not designed to run on Windows”
  • Error 0xc000007b

The visible file name is not enough to determine compatibility. Do not replace a missing file with one copied from another program, another computer, or a generic archive.

Use the application’s installer or launcher to restore the correct build. If you need to determine the application architecture, check the publisher’s documentation or inspect the executable with a trusted internal administration tool. Avoid replacing files until you know which program owns them.

Also check the folder where the error occurs. A 32-bit and a 64-bit application may each have its own cryptopp.dll, and the two files should not be swapped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cryptopp.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load another dependency required by it.

First, repair or reinstall the parent application. That is safer than manually assembling runtimes.

Only install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable if:

  • The application separately reports a missing Visual C++ runtime.
  • The application publisher specifically requires it.
  • The official installer includes it as part of the application setup.

The Visual C++ Redistributable is not a Crypto++ installer and does not replace cryptopp.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After installing a required runtime from Microsoft, restart Windows and test the application. If the program still fails, return to the application repair path rather than copying DLLs into system directories.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows components

DISM and SFC are appropriate when several unrelated applications fail, Windows features are malfunctioning, updates are failing, or other protected system files are missing. They do not normally restore an application-owned cryptopp.dll.

Install pending Windows updates first:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Check for updates again until none remain.
  7. Test the affected application.

Then run DISM followed by SFC from an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the program.

Microsoft’s documented order is DISM first and SFC second. A clean SFC result does not prove that an application-owned cryptopp.dll is healthy, because SFC primarily repairs protected Windows files. If the commands report repairs, restart and then repair the affected application again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When manually repeating SFC and DISM becomes difficult to track, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what it found; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns cryptopp.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a known recent change

System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a driver installation, application change, update, or cleanup operation and a restore point predates the failure.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can roll back system settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not replace the need to reinstall an application if that application’s own files are damaged.

Fix 8: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there

A graphics, audio, chipset, or storage driver is not the normal owner of cryptopp.dll. Do not update drivers simply because a DLL error appeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider a driver path only if the affected application also reports device initialization failures, crashes after a driver update, or problems in Device Manager.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing application.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the Device status message on the General tab.
  7. Open the Driver tab to view the provider and date.
  8. Use Update Driver only when an appropriate package is available from the device or computer manufacturer.
  9. If the problem began immediately after an update, consider Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not remove a working driver as a substitute for repairing the application. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through device categories and comparing driver versions; its free scan identifies outdated drivers, while driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional and does not replace restoring the application’s correct cryptopp.dll.

Do not run regsvr32 for cryptopp.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components.

Crypto++’s runtime DLL is not documented as a COM or ActiveX component that requires registration. Running:

regsvr32 cryptopp.dll

will generally produce an entry-point error or accomplish nothing useful. It cannot reconstruct a missing application dependency.

Use the application’s repair or reinstall process instead.

Do not copy cryptopp.dll into System32 or SysWOW64

Do not place a downloaded or copied DLL in:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • C:Windows
  • The system PATH

This can cause Windows to load the wrong version for another application, create architecture conflicts, or hide the actual installation problem. It also leaves an untracked binary in a location used by many programs.

The correct destination is normally the directory belonging to the application that requested the file, and the correct source is that application’s official installer or repair mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid random DLL downloads

Downloading cryptopp.dll from an unverified DLL site is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to the wrong application build, use the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the program’s expected exports. Even a clean file with the right name often does not fix a missing dependency or damaged installation.

There is no universal Crypto++ runtime installer equivalent to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Restore the file through the official application publisher, launcher, or installer. If the software is an internally deployed business application, obtain the approved package from your IT administrator.

If reinstalling does not fix the error

Work through these checks:

  1. Confirm that you reinstalled the same application that produced the message.
  2. Start it from its official shortcut or launcher.
  3. Check the application directory for cryptopp.dll.
  4. Confirm that antivirus did not remove the newly installed copy.
  5. Remove unofficial mods, plug-ins, overlays, or loaders temporarily.
  6. Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit and whether its installer matches Windows and the program.
  7. Install only runtimes explicitly required by the application publisher.
  8. Use a dependency-inspection tool approved by your organization to identify a missing secondary dependency.
  9. Contact the application vendor with the exact error text, application version, Windows version, executable path, and installation log if available.

If the error occurs only with one program, keep investigating that program. If multiple unrelated programs fail, return to Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and System Restore.

FAQ

Is cryptopp.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a third-party Crypto++ library DLL normally distributed with an application that uses it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Only if the affected application separately requires it or its official documentation specifies it. Visual C++ Redistributable does not install Crypto++ and is not a guaranteed fix.

Should I download the newest Crypto++ DLL?

No. An old application may require a particular build, architecture, export set, or legacy FIPS variant. Restore the copy supplied by the application.

Should I copy the file to System32?

No. Keep the application’s compatible copy in the application directory. Copying it into a Windows directory can create conflicts and does not repair the parent installation.

Can I register cryptopp.dll with regsvr32?

No useful repair is expected. Crypto++ is not documented as a registration-based COM or ActiveX DLL.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does SFC repair cryptopp.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while cryptopp.dll is normally owned by an application. Repair or reinstall that application first.

Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file is present?

The named DLL may have a missing dependency, be damaged, or be the wrong architecture. Application repair is the safest first response.

What if the file was quarantined?

Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore it only when the application and installer are legitimate and the detection is known to be a false positive. Otherwise reinstall from the official source.

Is every cryptopp.dll file safe?

No. The name alone does not prove origin or integrity. Treat files from unofficial software or unverified download sources as unsafe and reinstall the parent application from a legitimate source.
