“The program can’t start because iprop.dll is missing from your computer.” The iprop.dll error may also say that the file was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. iprop.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component named OLE PropertySet Implementation, and it is associated with the Visual Basic 6.0 runtime and legacy OLE compatibility support. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or universal game component.

The correct repair depends on where the failure occurs:
- Only one program fails: repair or reinstall that program first.
- Several older programs fail: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- The file was detected or removed: check Windows Security quarantine before restoring anything.
- The message says “bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows”: suspect a damaged, mismatched, or wrong-architecture copy.
- The application is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: check the 32-bit Windows component location and do not copy a 64-bit replacement.
- The error started after an update or system change: consider Windows Update repair, System Restore, or update recovery.
What iprop.dll does
The file description, OLE PropertySet Implementation, refers to Windows support for OLE property sets. These structures store and retrieve properties associated with compound documents and other Windows-compatible data. The component also handles related property-storage and PROPVARIANT operations.

Microsoft lists iprop.dll among the Visual Basic 6.0 runtime files that ship with Windows and are supported for the lifetime of supported Windows versions. Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6.0 support policy identifies the runtime files and explains their Windows support status.
This does not mean that every application showing the message was written in Visual Basic 6. An older application may use OLE functionality directly, or it may rely on another legacy component that loads the file indirectly.
Public file metadata identifies iprop.dll as a 32-bit component. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system files normally reside in locations such as:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The directory name is confusing: SysWOW64 generally contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows. Do not infer that a file is 64-bit merely because it is under a Windows system directory. The exact location can vary with Windows architecture and component layout.
Microsoft does not provide a current, general-purpose standalone iprop.dll download page. The official Visual Basic 6 Service Pack 6 package is intended for the VB6 development environment and older supported systems, not as a general replacement for a missing Windows system copy.
What the error message actually means
A Windows DLL message identifies a loading failure, not necessarily the precise cause.
“iprop.dll is missing” or “was not found”
The application could not locate the file in the directories Windows searched. The file may genuinely be absent, or the application may be looking in a different location than expected.
Windows uses a defined DLL search process that can include the application directory and Windows system directories. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order guidance.
“iprop.dll could not be loaded”
The file may exist but fail during loading because it is damaged, has the wrong architecture, or depends on another missing component.
“The specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean that iprop.dll itself is missing. Windows can show it when a dependency required by iprop.dll cannot be found.
“iprop.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This usually points to a corrupt file, an incompatible build, a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, or a file that was modified or replaced. A random download can make this situation worse.

First check: determine the scope of the problem
Before changing Windows files, test the pattern.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application again.
- If possible, start another older application that uses similar legacy components.
- Note whether the error appears before the application opens or only when a particular feature is used.
- Check whether the problem began after an application reinstall, Windows update, disk cleanup, antivirus action, or malware detection.
The distinction matters:
- If one application fails and everything else works, the application’s installation is the leading suspect.
- If several unrelated older applications fail, Windows component corruption or quarantine becomes more likely.
- If the file exists but one program still fails, that program may have a damaged private dependency, manifest, or DLL search path.
Do not assume a particular modern game or application requires iprop.dll unless its publisher confirms it. The filename alone is not enough to identify the owning program.
Fix 1: repair the affected application
Use this fix first when only one program reports the error.
Repair an installed Windows application
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application’s data while replacing damaged program files. If the Repair button is unavailable or does not help, use Reset where appropriate. Reset can remove application data, so check the program’s documentation first.
Repair a desktop program
Some traditional desktop programs do not appear with a Windows Repair button. In that case:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Start and search for Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer’s repair wizard.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If the installer offers no repair option, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original publisher, Microsoft Store, or trusted launcher. Save application data and license information first.
For games, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files command. The exact name depends on the launcher. This is safer than copying iprop.dll into the game directory because the launcher can restore the complete, matching installation.
If reinstalling the application fixes the error, the problem was probably its own installation rather than the Windows copy of iprop.dll.
Fix 2: repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this path when:
- Several programs fail.
iprop.dllis missing from its expected Windows location.- Windows recently experienced corruption or an interrupted update.
- The application repair did not help.
- Windows Security removed a protected component and no trusted restoration is available.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source.

- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when DISM completes.
Run SFC
After the restart:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions explain the result messages and the correct DISM-before-SFC sequence.
A message stating that SFC found and repaired corrupt files supports the Windows-corruption theory. A message stating that no integrity violations were found does not prove that the application is healthy. It means SFC did not find a protected Windows-file problem, so return to application repair, dependency tracing, or compatibility checks.
Running these commands manually can involve repeated scans and uncertainty about which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what it identifies; any repair action is handled by the full version, but it is not required, and DISM/SFC remain the supported Microsoft path.
Fix 3: check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate file, or it can identify an untrusted copy that an application placed in its own folder. Do not assume either explanation without checking the file’s path and signature.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections involving
iprop.dll. - Expand a detection to see its original path, detection name, and action.
- Do not restore the file merely because an application needs it.
A legitimate Windows copy should be in a normal Windows system location and should have Microsoft provenance. A copy in a temporary folder, downloads folder, or an unexpected application directory deserves more suspicion.
Before allowing or restoring anything, confirm:
- The original file path.
- The publisher or digital signature.
- Whether the detection came from a trusted Windows component.
- Whether the application itself is trusted.
- Whether the same file is detected again after restoration.
Microsoft explains how to use Protection History in Windows Security. Its antivirus and antimalware FAQ also covers exclusions and detection handling.
If the file is outside a normal Windows location, lacks a valid Microsoft signature, or is repeatedly detected, do not create an antivirus exclusion. Run a full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline and repair Windows from trusted sources.
Fix 4: verify architecture and file location
iprop.dll is primarily a 32-bit legacy compatibility component. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may depend on the 32-bit Windows copy, commonly associated with SysWOW64.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The following mistakes are common:
- Copying a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder.
- Copying a file from another computer running a different Windows build.
- Placing a system DLL beside an application to bypass the normal Windows component.
- Assuming that a file in
SysWOW64is 64-bit. - Replacing a damaged file with one from an unknown source.
Use File Explorer to inspect the likely Windows location, but do not delete or replace the file manually. If it is absent, use DISM and SFC rather than copying it from another PC.
If the application is 64-bit and expects a 64-bit dependency, iprop.dll may not be the only problem. The application may be loading a private component or reporting a generic failure from a different dependency. Check the publisher’s system requirements and support diagnostics.
Fix 5: update Windows and use Windows repair reinstall
Install pending Windows updates before attempting more invasive recovery.

If the error began after system corruption or a recent update, Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Where available, this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. Microsoft describes the feature in its guide to reinstalling the current version of Windows.
The option may not appear on every Windows installation. If it is unavailable, continue with application repair, DISM/SFC, or the recovery options below.
Fix 6: use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the error started immediately after a driver installation, software installation, or update and a restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Recovery.
- Open Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain when to use it.
Fix 7: update a driver only when the evidence points there
A driver is not the normal owner of iprop.dll. Do not install a graphics, chipset, storage, or audio driver merely because a DLL error appeared.
Consider a driver update only if:
- The application error began immediately after a hardware or driver change.
- Device Manager shows a warning icon.
- The application also reports graphics, audio, display, or hardware initialization errors.
- The application publisher specifically identifies a driver compatibility issue.
To check Device Manager:
- Open Start.
- Search for Device Manager.
- Open it.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or System devices.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
For a rollback, open the same Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if the button is available. For a clean reinstall, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer or computer manufacturer, not from a DLL download page.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware identifiers, Windows compatibility, and several manufacturer packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues and identify available driver updates; its full version performs the installation, but driver repair is not a substitute for repairing the application or Windows component.
Why regsvr32 iprop.dll is usually wrong
Do not treat regsvr32 as a universal DLL repair command.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry points. It does not:
- Download a missing file.
- Restore a Windows component.
- Repair the component store.
- Fix a wrong-architecture DLL.
- Restore an application’s private dependencies.
- Make a damaged file valid.
Running:
regsvr32 iprop.dll
may produce an entry-point error or another message because iprop.dll is not being repaired through that process. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains what the command is designed to do.
Use DISM, SFC, or the application’s installer instead.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites offering individual iprop.dll downloads. A downloaded file may have:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The wrong Windows build.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Missing dependencies.
- A modified export table.
- Malware or an invalid signature.
- A version that conflicts with Windows servicing.
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder can also create DLL search-order problems. It may suppress one message while leaving the underlying installation damaged.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update.
- DISM and SFC.
- The original application installer or launcher.
- Microsoft’s supported Windows recovery tools.
- The application or hardware publisher’s official installer.
Microsoft’s VB6 Service Pack 6 download is not a general modern replacement for a missing Windows system copy of iprop.dll.
If the error remains after repair
Use the message and scope to narrow the next step.
Only one application still fails
Reinstall that application from its original source. Check whether it supports the current Windows version and whether it has its own compatibility mode or legacy runtime requirements.
If the application was copied rather than installed, obtain the complete installer. A copied program directory may omit manifests, side-by-side files, registry configuration, or private dependencies.

Run DISM and SFC again only if the first run reported that it could not complete or repaired files. If SFC reports no violations, use Windows repair reinstall or System Restore rather than repeatedly running the same command.
The file exists but Windows still cannot load it
The missing item may be a dependency. Use the application vendor’s diagnostic tools or contact its support team with:
- The exact error text.
- Windows edition and architecture.
- The application name and version.
- When the problem began.
- Whether application repair and reinstall were attempted.
- DISM and SFC result messages.
- The path and signature of the file involved.
Microsoft’s DLL troubleshooting overview explains why a load error can identify a dependency rather than the named DLL.
The file is repeatedly quarantined
Do not keep restoring it. Run a full scan and Microsoft Defender Offline, then repair Windows from trusted sources. A file outside normal Windows locations or without a valid Microsoft signature should be treated as potentially unsafe.
FAQ
Is iprop.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. iprop.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component named OLE PropertySet Implementation. A legitimate file can still be damaged, missing, quarantined, or replaced by an untrusted copy, so verify its path and signature.
Is iprop.dll part of Visual C++?
No evidence supports treating it as a Visual C++ Redistributable file. It belongs to the Windows-shipped Visual Basic 6.0 and OLE compatibility set.
Is iprop.dll part of DirectX or .NET?
No. Do not install DirectX or a .NET runtime solely because this filename appears in the error.
Should I download iprop.dll?
No. Use application repair, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or a supported Windows recovery method. Standalone DLL downloads are version-sensitive and may be unsafe.
Should I copy iprop.dll from another computer?
That is not a reliable repair. Windows component versions must match the operating-system build and servicing state. Restore the file through Windows servicing instead.
Should I run regsvr32 iprop.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 registers DLLs that support the required registration entry points; it does not repair or replace this Windows component.
Why does the message mention a missing module when iprop.dll exists?
A dependency of iprop.dll may be missing, or the file may have the wrong architecture or be damaged. The named DLL is not always the missing item.
What is the most likely fix?
Repair the affected application if only one program fails. If multiple programs fail or Windows itself has corruption, run DISM followed by SFC and check Windows Security quarantine.
