What this file actually does
cryptsvc.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system component. Its internal description is Cryptographic Services, and it works with the Windows Cryptographic Services, or CryptSvc, service.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Cryptographic Services helps Windows validate catalog signatures, manage trusted root certificates, perform automatic root-certificate updates, and support certificate-related operations. Windows Update, installers, browsers, security software, games with certificate checks, and other applications may depend on those functions.

The file normally belongs in:
%WinDir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs use Windows file-system redirection and may access architecture-specific files through:

%WinDir%SysWOW64
That naming can be confusing. System32 is commonly associated with 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Do not copy a file between these folders manually.
The exact file version and size depend on the Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and language resources. Older version information found online is not a universal specification for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
cryptsvc.dll is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Reinstalling those packages is therefore not the normal fix unless the affected application’s own vendor specifically identifies one of them as a separate missing dependency.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | What it usually indicates | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because cryptsvc.dll is missing from your computer” | Windows component corruption, deletion, quarantine, or an application installation problem | Run DISM, then SFC |
| “cryptsvc.dll was not found” | The loader cannot find the file or a required dependency | Check the Windows folders and repair Windows |
| “Error loading cryptsvc.dll. The specified module could not be found” | The named file may exist, but another dependent DLL may be missing | Repair Windows and the affected application |
| “cryptsvc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | Wrong architecture, damaged file, incompatible replacement, or corruption | Remove unofficial replacements and run DISM and SFC |
| The error started after Windows Update failed | Damaged servicing state or component store | Troubleshoot Windows Update, then repair Windows |
| Only one game or program fails | Broken application files or a bad application-specific dependency | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Defender reports or quarantines the file | Possible false positive, tampering, or malware | Inspect Protection History before restoring anything |
| The file exists outside the Windows folders | Possible application copy, wrong replacement, or DLL-preloading risk | Check its signature and path, then repair Windows |
The wording varies between Windows versions and programs. A “module could not be found” message does not always mean that cryptsvc.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by the DLL or application could not load.
Fix 1: Restart, then install pending Windows updates
A restart is worth doing before deeper repairs, especially after an interrupted update or installer. It does not repair a corrupted DLL, but it can complete pending servicing operations and release files that are locked by another process.
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Select Power.
- Choose Restart.
- After Windows starts, open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
- Launch the program that displayed the error.
If the error returns, continue with the system-file repair below. Do not repeatedly restart instead of repairing Windows.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary fix for a missing or damaged cryptsvc.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files used by System File Checker. SFC then checks protected Windows files and replaces missing or damaged copies.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
When successful, DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully or that corruption was repaired. If DISM says no corruption was found, continue with SFC anyway.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and let the scan reach 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue to the recovery steps later in this guide.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: restart Windows and run the command again from an administrator account.
Restart after SFC completes, even if it reports that no integrity violations were found.

The manual process is effective but can be tedious when you are repeatedly hunting through repair logs and trying to determine what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; repairing the issue requires the full version, and it is optional rather than a replacement for Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf DISM cannot find repair files
DISM may fail when the component store is damaged and Windows cannot obtain a suitable repair source. Read the exact error, make sure Windows Update is working, and run the command again after restarting.
If it still fails, use a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source and /LimitAccess options, or move to Windows recovery and repair-reinstall options. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture closely enough to provide compatible repair files. Do not guess at a source path or use a random ISO.
Fix 3: Check the Cryptographic Services service
cryptsvc.dll is associated with the CryptSvc service. Microsoft documents Cryptographic Services as an always-installed Windows service with automatic startup behavior. A disabled service can cause certificate and servicing failures, but changing the service configuration will not repair a damaged DLL.
Check the service in the graphical interface
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Cryptographic Services.
- Double-click it.
- Check Service status.
- Check Startup type.
If the service is stopped and the Start button is available, select Start. If its startup type is disabled, change it to Automatic, select Apply, and then select Start.
Recommended Free Tools
If the service is already running with automatic startup, leave it alone and return to DISM and SFC rather than repeatedly restarting it.
Check the service from Command Prompt
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
sc query CryptSvc
This displays the service state. If it is disabled or will not start, the following commands can restore the normal startup configuration:
sc config CryptSvc start= auto
net start CryptSvc
There must be a space after start=. If net start CryptSvc reports that the service is already running, that is not an error. If it fails, record the complete message and continue with system repair rather than forcing permissions or replacing the DLL.
Fix 4: Repair the affected application
If Windows itself works normally and only one application reports cryptsvc.dll, the application may have damaged files or may be reporting a missing dependency inaccurately.

If the program was recently moved between drives, modified with an unofficial patch, or updated incompletely, reinstalling that program may be the definitive fix. It will not repair a damaged Windows copy of cryptsvc.dll, so run DISM and SFC when more than one application is affected.
Fix 5: Review antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Security software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false positive. Malware can also modify, replace, or delete system components. Do not immediately restore a quarantined file.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with
cryptsvc.dll. - Inspect the full file path, detection name, publisher, and available signature information.
- Run a Full scan.
- If Windows remains suspicious or malware is possible, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the scan options.
Restore or allow the file only when you have confirmed that it is an authentic Microsoft-signed file in the expected Windows location and that the detection is a false positive. If the file is in a temporary folder, a writable application folder, or an unexpected user directory, do not restore it merely because its name is cryptsvc.dll.
After a confirmed malware incident, repairing one DLL may not be enough. Back up personal files, follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance, and consider reinstalling Windows from official installation media if the system remains compromised.
Fix 6: Verify the path, signature, and architecture
A legitimate Windows copy normally belongs under %WinDir%System32, with 32-bit redirection on 64-bit Windows involving %WinDir%SysWOW64. A copy in an application’s folder is not automatically malicious, but it deserves closer inspection.
To inspect the file:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%WinDir%System32in the address bar. - Find
cryptsvc.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab for the description and publisher information.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
Repeat the check in %WinDir%SysWOW64 only when you are diagnosing a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows.
Do not manually overwrite either file. A copied DLL may have the wrong architecture, Windows build, servicing level, signature, or dependencies. A 32-bit file substituted for a 64-bit file can produce a misleading loader error, and a file from another Windows release can create additional system corruption.
If the file exists but the error remains, the problem may be a missing dependency rather than a missing cryptsvc.dll. DISM and SFC are safer than trying to identify and copy individual DLLs.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the timing points to a driver change
Drivers are not the normal cause of a missing cryptsvc.dll, but a recent storage, chipset, security, or system-device change can contribute to broader Windows instability. Do not use Device Manager as a substitute for DISM and SFC.
Use Device Manager when the issue began after a driver installation or a device shows an error:

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Storage controllers, System devices, or Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver date and provider.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.
Avoid installing a driver merely because a DLL utility claims it is old. The correct driver depends on the exact hardware and Windows version.
Driver hunting is especially time-consuming when several devices have different vendors and architectures. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies what it finds; installing drivers requires the full version, and the affected hardware manufacturer remains the authoritative source for driver compatibility.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose a DllRegisterServer entry point. cryptsvc.dll is a Windows system component, not a normal self-registering application control. Running the command can produce an entry-point error and does not repair missing, damaged, or mismatched system files.
Use DISM and SFC instead. If a specific application vendor documents a registration step for its own component, follow that vendor’s instructions for that component, not for cryptsvc.dll.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading a DLL by filename is not a reliable repair. A file can have the correct name but the wrong:
- Windows version
- Architecture
- Servicing level
- Digital signature
- Dependent libraries
- File contents
It may also contain malware. Manually copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can hide the original problem and cause a different application or Windows update to fail later.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery tools, and the affected application’s official installer instead. Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ packages repair C and C++ runtime libraries, not the Windows Cryptographic Services component.
Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent system change
If the problem began after a driver, update, application, or configuration change and an appropriate restore point exists, System Restore can roll back system files and settings without normally removing personal files.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace malware removal or repair every component-store problem. Run DISM and SFC after Windows starts again.
Fix 9: Repair Windows when SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC repeatedly reports that it could not repair files:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again from an administrator Command Prompt.
- Run SFC again.
- Test from Safe Mode if normal startup software is interfering.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Use System Restore if the timing fits.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Look for Fix problems using Windows Update and Reinstall now, where available.
- Follow the prompts to reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
If Windows will not boot, enter the Windows Recovery Environment. From the recovery menus, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options and consider:

What to collect before asking for help
Record these details before making more changes:
- The complete error message
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 version and build
- The application or game that fails
- Whether all applications fail or only one
- The exact time the issue began
- Recent updates, driver changes, installs, or security detections
- The path shown for
cryptsvc.dll - Whether the file has a valid Microsoft digital signature
- The output from DISM and SFC
- The result of
sc query CryptSvc
This information separates a damaged Windows component from an application-specific failure, missing dependency, quarantine event, or architecture mismatch.
FAQ
Is cryptsvc.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Cryptographic Services service. Its normal location is under the Windows system directories.
Should I download cryptsvc.dll from a DLL website?
No. Unverified downloads can contain malware or have the wrong version, architecture, signature, or dependencies. Repair Windows through DISM and SFC instead.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix cryptsvc.dll?
Usually not. cryptsvc.dll is part of Windows, not the Visual C++ runtime. Repair the affected application if only one program fails, and repair Windows if multiple components are affected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does the file exist but Windows still say it cannot be found?
The error may refer to a dependency, not the named file. The file may also have the wrong architecture, be damaged, lack a valid signature, or be in an unexpected location.
Should I register cryptsvc.dll with regsvr32?
No. It is not a normal self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Use DISM and SFC.
What if SFC says it repaired the file but the application still fails?
Restart Windows, install pending updates, and repair or reinstall the affected application. If only that application fails, its own files or dependencies are more likely to be responsible.
What if Windows Defender quarantined it?
Inspect Protection History, verify the path and Microsoft signature, and scan the system. Restore it only after confirming that the detection is a false positive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is cryptsvc.dll the same on every Windows installation?
No. File versions vary by Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and language resources. Do not compare a file only by filename or copy one from another computer.
