Before replacing anything, identify what is actually calling wmpui.dll.
- Which program fails: Windows Media Player Legacy, an older game, a multimedia utility, an installer, codec pack, or visualization package?
- When does it fail: At Windows startup, when launching the program, while opening a file, or after an update or cleanup?
- What is the exact message: Missing file, not found, bad image, entry-point error, or a crash naming
wmpui.dll? - Which Windows edition is installed: Windows 10 or 11, and is it an N edition?
- Is the program 32-bit: An older 32-bit application can expect a legacy 32-bit Windows Media Player component even on 64-bit Windows.
- Is the filename exact: Confirm that the message says
wmpui.dll, not the newer-lookingwmpdui.dll.
wmpui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Media Player component, but it mainly belongs to older Windows Media Player releases. The safest fix is to restore Windows Media Player Legacy through Windows or repair the original application that supplied the dependency, not to download a replacement DLL.

What is wmpui.dll?
wmpui.dll is associated with Microsoft Windows Media Player. It was used by older Windows Media Player installations, including Windows Media Player 7 and 8-era releases and Windows 2000 and Windows XP updates.

The documented Windows 2000 and Windows Media Player 7.1 build is 7.10.0.3078. The documented Windows XP and Windows Media Player for XP build is 8.0.0.4496. Earlier updates included other builds, so there is no single universal version that belongs on every Windows computer. See Microsoft’s MS06-024 file information and MS06-005 file tables.
That history matters on a current PC. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not universally need or contain wmpui.dll. Their media stack uses newer components, and Microsoft’s modern Windows media package documentation lists wmpdui.dll, not wmpui.dll, for the newer Windows Media Streaming package. Do not substitute one filename for the other.
The file is also unrelated to:
- Visual C++ Redistributables
- DirectX
- .NET
- Graphics drivers
- General Windows gaming runtimes
Those packages may be relevant to other errors, but reinstalling them is usually not a meaningful response to a wmpui.dll message.
Why the error appears
The cause usually falls into one of these groups:

A missing-file dialog does not prove that Windows itself should provide the file. Some old applications privately expect a Windows Media Player component, and repairing Windows may not restore a dependency that belongs to that application’s installer.
Fix 1: Enable Windows Media Player Legacy
This is the fastest and most likely fix when the error comes from Windows Media Player itself or a program that uses the Windows Media Player feature supplied by Windows.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Beside Add an optional feature, select View features.
- Search for Windows Media Player.
- Select it, choose Next, then select Install.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose Manage optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Select Windows Media Player.
- Choose Install, then restart the computer.

After the restart, launch the affected program again. If Windows Media Player opens normally but the older application still reports wmpui.dll, the application may be using a private or incompatible dependency. Continue with the application repair steps below.
If Windows cannot find Windows Media Player in Optional Features, check the Windows edition before assuming that the component is corrupted.
Fix 2: Install Media Feature Pack on Windows 10 or 11 N
Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. If the computer uses Windows 10 N or Windows 11 N, Windows Media Player Legacy and related components may not be present until Media Feature Pack is installed.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next or Install.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.

After restarting, return to Optional Features and confirm that Windows Media Player is available. Install it if it is listed separately. Then test the program that produced the error.

Fix 3: Repair damaged Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use this path when Windows Media Player Legacy is installed but behaves as though its files are damaged, or when several Windows components have started failing after an update, interrupted installation, disk problem, or cleanup operation.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source. Run them in this order.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and let the scan finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that repairs were completed.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the affected program.

- SFC found no integrity violations.
- SFC found corrupted files and repaired them.
- The original Windows Media Player error no longer appears.
If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the problem remains, Windows may need a valid installation source or an in-place repair installation. DISM and SFC repair Windows components; they do not guarantee restoration of an old application’s private copy of wmpui.dll. Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions explain the supported sequence.
Repeatedly running repair commands without checking what changed can make troubleshooting slow and uncertain. Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If the error appears when launching an old game, media editor, codec package, visualization, or installer, treat that program as the primary suspect.
Use the Windows repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu or select Advanced options, depending on the program.
- Choose Repair if the option is available.
- Launch the program again.
Not every desktop application exposes a Windows repair button. The application’s own uninstaller may offer Repair, Modify, or Verify instead.

Use a game launcher repair function
If the file is requested by a game:
- Open the launcher that installed the game.
- Open the game’s properties or management menu.
- Select Verify files, Scan and repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the launcher to compare and restore its installation.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
Do not assume that every game legitimately needs wmpui.dll. An old multimedia feature may be part of the game’s original installer, but a current title reporting this historical filename can also indicate an obsolete launcher, compatibility layer, damaged installation, or incorrectly bundled dependency.
Reinstall from the original source
If repair and verification fail:
- Back up saved games, profiles, presets, and license information.
- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it using the original installer or the publisher’s legitimate distribution channel.
- Apply the application’s own updates.
- Test it before restoring optional plugins or codec packs.
This is the definitive repair when the program carries a private copy of an old Windows Media Player component. Windows servicing cannot reliably reconstruct files that were supposed to be installed by a third-party application.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a real file if it is altered, bundled with an untrusted installer, or detected because of its surrounding package. A missing file alone does not prove that Windows Security made a mistake.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to
wmpui.dllor the affected application’s installation directory. - Expand an entry to see its detected path and action.
Only consider restoring or allowing a file when all of these are true:

- The original path belongs to a trusted Windows component or known application.
- The installer came from a legitimate source.
- The file’s Microsoft digital signature is valid where a signature is expected.
- The detection is understood rather than merely dismissed.
Restoring an unexplained DLL from quarantine is not a complete repair. Reinstalling the legitimate Windows feature or original application is safer. Microsoft describes the available Protection History actions in its Windows Security Protection History guide.
If the file repeatedly returns to quarantine, stop restoring it. Investigate the installer, run a complete security scan, and check whether the application package has been tampered with.
Fix 6: Check architecture and the calling program
A 32-bit application can request a 32-bit legacy DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a random 64-bit replacement will not satisfy that request, and copying files between System32 and SysWOW64 can create more confusion.
The useful questions are:
- Is the failing application marked as 32-bit by its vendor?
- Was it designed for Windows XP or an older Windows Media Player release?
- Does the error show the full path of the requested file?
- Is the application loading a private DLL from its own folder?
- Does the program fail only when a media, visualization, or codec feature is used?
Do not substitute:
wmpdui.dll
wmp.dll
for:
wmpui.dll
Similar names do not mean interchangeable exports or compatible interfaces. The documented historical builds also differ between Windows releases, so copying a file from another computer can result in a bad-image error, missing entry point, or immediate crash.

Fix 7: Update Windows and investigate driver involvement only when indicated
Run Windows Update when the problem began after an interrupted update or when optional Windows components cannot install.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Optional Features and try Windows Media Player Legacy again.
A graphics or audio driver is not the usual cause of a wmpui.dll missing-file message. Consider a driver investigation only if the application also crashes during video output, audio initialization, hardware acceleration, or visualization rendering.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and relevant capture-device categories.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart and test the application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and a driver update will not repair a missing legacy media DLL by itself.
The historical regsvr32 exception
regsvr32 is not a universal missing-DLL repair command. Most runtime DLLs do not self-register, and registration cannot recreate a file that is absent or damaged.

There is one narrow historical exception. Microsoft documented a Windows XP and older Windows Media Player registration conflict in archived KB 330332. In that situation, the correct wmpui.dll already existed and an incorrectly registered version caused Windows Media Player to crash.
Only on a relevant legacy installation, and only after confirming that the file already exists, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
regsvr32 %SystemRoot%system32wmpui.dll
A successful registration message means Windows accepted the registration request. It does not prove that the file is the correct build or that a modern program will work.
Do not use this command when:
- The file is missing.
- Windows 10 or 11 merely reports a missing file.
- You downloaded the DLL from an unknown source.
- The application is 64-bit and the command targets an unrelated 32-bit component.
- The error is a bad image or missing entry point.
- You are trying to repair Windows Media Player Legacy through a general-purpose command.
For current Windows, re-enable or reinstall the optional feature instead.
Do not download wmpui.dll from a DLL repository
Generic DLL download pages are a poor repair source for this file. The historical version tables show that wmpui.dll existed in multiple Windows and Windows Media Player builds. A copied file can have the wrong version, architecture, exports, or surrounding dependencies.
It can also introduce malware or a tampered binary into:
C:WindowsSystem32
or an application’s installation directory. Copying a file into one of those folders may silence the first dialog while leaving the actual broken installation untouched.

- The original application’s installer or repair function
- The application’s official compatibility update
Do not use a DLL from another Windows computer unless the application vendor specifically documents that procedure and the operating system, release, architecture, and component version all match.
If the error still remains
Collect the details that identify the real caller:
- Record the complete error text.
- Note the executable that was starting when the error appeared.
- Check whether the dialog displays a full file path.
- Open Event Viewer and review Windows Logs → Application for the matching crash time.
- Check the application’s own crash log or launcher log.
- Determine whether the application is loading a private copy.
- Temporarily remove recently installed codec packs, visualizations, or shell extensions.
- Use System Restore only if the problem began recently and a suitable restore point exists.
A crash mentioning wmpui.dll does not necessarily mean the file itself is missing. It can indicate an incompatible build, an incorrect registration, a private application dependency, or confusion with wmpdui.dll.

If the file reappears in quarantine, investigate the installer instead of repeatedly restoring it. If Windows cannot repair its components, use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation. If only one old application fails after Windows Media Player Legacy is restored, reinstall or update that application rather than changing system DLLs.
FAQ
Is wmpui.dll safe?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows Media Player component associated mainly with older releases. Safety depends on the file’s origin, path, signature, and build. A file with the right name from an unknown download site is not automatically trustworthy.
Does Windows 11 normally contain wmpui.dll?
Not necessarily. Windows 11 uses newer media components and does not universally include this historical DLL. Windows Media Player Legacy is an optional feature.
Is wmpui.dll the same as wmpdui.dll?
No. They are different filenames associated with different generations of Windows media components. Do not rename or substitute one for the other.
Should I reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?
Usually not for this filename. wmpui.dll belongs to Windows Media Player, not to those runtime packages. Repair Windows Media Player Legacy or the application that reports the error first.
Will SFC restore wmpui.dll?
SFC can repair protected Windows files when the correct component is part of the current Windows installation. It may not restore a file belonging to an old third-party application or an obsolete private dependency.
Can I copy wmpui.dll into System32?
Do not do that. The correct build depends on the Windows and Windows Media Player release, and copying an arbitrary DLL can create crashes or security problems.
When should I use regsvr32?
Only for the narrow historical registration problem documented for older Windows Media Player installations, when the correct file already exists. It is not a general solution for a missing file on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Why does an old game need this file?
The game may use an older Windows Media Player interface for video playback, menus, music, or visualization features. Repair the game’s original installation and enable the required Windows media feature rather than downloading the DLL separately.
