Crysis Next was reported as a cancelled multiplayer project, and leaked footage surfaced online in August 2024. Reports described an early third-person game with three classes. Some coverage said fans seemed glad it was cancelled, but that was an impression drawn from online comments—not evidence of what Crysis fans generally thought.

What was Crysis Next?

Crysis Next was reported as a multiplayer-focused game set in the Crysis universe, described in coverage as a battle royale. Crytek did not formally acknowledge the project in the cited reporting, so details about its development and status come from media reports rather than an official announcement.

Gamereactor reported on August 27, 2024 that footage from several years earlier had leaked online. Insider Gaming also reported on the leak and takedown notices. Neither report establishes that a playable public release ever existed.

What does the leaked gameplay show?

Gamereactor described 13 minutes of third-person multiplayer footage and named three classes: Frontliner, Technician, and Flanker. Insider Gaming’s report instead called the second class Tactician. The available reports therefore disagree on that class name.

The footage was characterized as early or rudimentary. It is not a reliable basis for judging what a finished game would have looked or played like, or what content and mechanics it might ultimately have included.

Was Crysis Next cancelled?

Coverage describes Crysis Next as cancelled, but the cancellation was not formally confirmed by Crytek in the cited reporting. Insider Gaming said the studio had never publicly acknowledged the project and that the cancellation date was unknown. The date and circumstances of the cancellation should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.

Why was Crysis Next cancelled?

There is no confirmed explanation in the cited sources. Push Square described the idea that the project was dropped so Crytek could focus on Crysis 4 as a rumor, not an established reason.

Crytek did announce a new Crysis game on January 26, 2022. CEO Avni Yerli wrote: “Right now the game is in the early stages of development so it will be a while yet, but we wanted to bring you the news at this time.” That announcement did not name Crysis Next or say that the new game replaced it. Crytek’s announcement is about the separately announced new Crysis game.

Are Crysis fans happy it was cancelled?

Gamereactor said the online sentiment “seems to be” that fans were glad the project was cancelled. That is an editorial impression based on visible reactions, not a representative survey. Push Square’s comments include readers who preferred a strong single-player Crysis game to another battle royale, but comments are anecdotes and do not establish a wider consensus.

Push Square also displayed a poll with 251 votes, but it asked whether readers remembered the Crysis 4 announcement—not whether they supported cancelling Crysis Next. Its result cannot be used to measure approval of the cancellation.
