What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Counter-Strike 2 runs its official servers at 64 snapshots per second. Its subtick system records the precise time an input occurs between those snapshots, so shots, movement starts and grenade throws are timestamped instead of being rounded to the next fixed tick. Changing client rate commands to 128 cannot turn Valve matchmaking into a 128-tick service; the server controls the simulation cadence and the snapshots it can send.

CS2 tickrate at a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What tickrate does CS2 use? | Official CS2 servers send 64 game-state snapshots per second, according to Steam Support’s Source2 Telemetry HUD documentation. |
| How long is one 64-Hz tick? | 15.625 milliseconds (1,000 divided by 64). This is a calculation from the documented rate. |
| What does subtick add? | It timestamps input events at their precise occurrence within the 64-snapshot cadence. |
| Can a client command create 128 tick in matchmaking? | No. Client settings can request or buffer updates, but they cannot raise the server’s simulation rate. |
| What should you watch when play feels inconsistent? | Source2 telemetry for upstream and downstream tick misses, packet loss and jitter, while separately checking local frame-time performance. |
That distinction resolves most arguments about “64 tick versus 128 tick” in CS2: the server still advances and publishes the game at 64 Hz, while subtick supplies finer timing for events recorded between those advances.

What tickrate actually measures
Tickrate is the number of simulation updates a game server performs each second. During an update, the server processes the authoritative game state—player movement, weapon actions, physics and other rules—and prepares a snapshot for clients. At 64 Hz, the nominal interval between snapshots is 15.625 ms.
Your monitor’s frame rate is a different clock. FPS describes how often your own machine renders frames. A system producing 240 FPS can display more local frames between server snapshots, but it does not make the remote server simulate at 240 Hz. Conversely, a 64-Hz server can still feel uneven on a machine with poor frame times, because rendering and simulation are separate parts of the experience.

Why the distinction matters
- A higher FPS counter cannot increase the number of authoritative updates the server computes.
- A network setting cannot make a server send snapshots that its simulation does not produce.
- When diagnosing a missed shot or a stutter, first identify whether the symptom is local rendering, network delivery or server timing; changing one category does not repair another.
How subtick works in CS2
Valve describes “Sub-tick updates” as “the heart of Counter-Strike 2.” In the older fixed-tick model, the server evaluated actions at discrete boundaries. An input arriving just after a boundary could wait for the next simulation step, even if the player pressed the button only a fraction of a millisecond later.
CS2 keeps the 64-snapshot cadence but records when an input happened inside that interval. Valve’s explanation specifically identifies the start of movement, a fired shot and a thrown grenade as events whose exact instant the server can know. The server can therefore apply the event’s timestamp when resolving the simulation instead of treating every input as if it occurred at the same point in the tick.
Subtick is not 128-Hz simulation
Subtick does not create twice as many complete world updates, nor does it make the server run at an unlimited frequency. State snapshots still arrive on the 64-Hz schedule. Subtick is finer event timing layered onto that schedule. It addresses when an action occurred; it does not change how often the server publishes the whole game state.

What you should expect in play
Two shots or movement inputs that occur at different points within one 15.625-ms interval are not automatically assigned the same effective time. That can make input ordering and hit resolution more precise than a model that only knows the surrounding tick boundaries. It cannot compensate for a dropped packet, a late packet, a saturated server or a frame-time spike on your computer.
Why cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate cannot force 128 tick
Client rate commands are often misunderstood because their names sound like server controls. They are not. The server owns its simulation loop and its snapshot cadence. Valve’s networking guidance states that a server cannot send more than one snapshot per tick; a client value above the server’s supported rate therefore cannot manufacture additional snapshots.
cl_cmdrate concerns how frequently the client asks to send commands, while cl_updaterate concerns the update rate the client requests or is prepared to receive. Their useful ceiling is set by the server and by the connection’s available bandwidth and processing capacity. In official matchmaking, changing either value to 128 does not convert the service to 128 tick.

What happens when values are too ambitious
- If the server remains at 64 Hz, the extra request has no authoritative updates to receive.
- If your connection or hardware cannot sustain the traffic and processing load, experiments can show as choke, packet loss or unstable delivery rather than better registration.
- A community server configured for a different cadence can only deliver that cadence if its own simulation, network capacity and administration support it.
For ordinary matchmaking, leave these commands at the game’s current defaults while troubleshooting. A higher number is not a quality setting by itself; it is only useful when the server supports the requested rate and the connection has headroom.
A safe settings workflow
1. Establish a clean baseline
Start with the current CS2 defaults for client networking values. Record what you see in a normal match—latency, packet loss, choke, jitter and any telemetry tick misses—before changing commands. This gives you a comparison point and prevents a configuration experiment from being mistaken for a server improvement.
2. Test one variable at a time
If you administer or join a community server that documents a non-default rate, change only the relevant client request and observe the server’s telemetry. Do not assume that a command accepted by the console means the server adopted it. The server’s actual snapshots and the network metrics are the meaningful result.

3. Revert when delivery worsens
Return to defaults if packet loss, choke, missed ticks or jitter increase. A setting that looks numerically higher but delivers updates late is worse for a real-time shooter than a lower request that arrives consistently.

CS:GO-era guides often present fixed interpolation and rate combinations as universal fixes. CS2’s subtick architecture changes how event timing is handled, and Steam’s current support material directs players toward Source2 telemetry rather than a single magic rate value. An old recipe may be irrelevant to the current client or server and can obscure the actual network problem.

“Bad hit registration” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The useful question is whether the server missed a simulation update, your packet arrived late, your client dropped data, or your local frame time made the result look delayed.

Enable the Source2 telemetry HUD
Use CS2’s Source2 Telemetry HUD, documented by Steam Support, and observe it during the moment the problem occurs rather than only after a match. The relevant indicators include upstream and downstream tick-miss rates, packet loss and jitter.

Read the indicators separately
- Upstream or downstream tick misses: show that updates are not arriving or being processed on time in that direction.
- Packet loss: indicates data was not delivered at all.
- Jitter: indicates variation in arrival time. Steam notes that real-time communication depends on timely delivery, so a packet that arrives late can be nearly as disruptive as one that is dropped.
- Local FPS or frame-time spikes: point to rendering or CPU/GPU scheduling, not automatically to the server or internet path.
Use a branching diagnosis
- If frame time spikes while network telemetry stays clean, investigate local performance first: background tasks, graphics load and thermal or power limits are more relevant than tickrate commands.
- If loss, choke or jitter rises at the same moment as the symptom, investigate the network path—wireless interference, congestion, routing or an overloaded connection—before changing server-rate requests.
- If telemetry shows tick misses without an obvious home-network problem, compare another server or match. Server load and hardware capacity are part of the ceiling, and a client cannot repair an overloaded server.
- If none of those indicators move, keep the default rate settings and capture the exact time and context. A single visual outcome is not proof that the server was running at the wrong tickrate.
Comparing official, third-party and community servers
“128 tick” is only one comparison axis, and it is not established for every service. Before treating a server as faster or more consistent, verify four separate properties.
| Comparison axis | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Snapshot cadence | How many authoritative snapshots the server actually simulates and sends per second. | This is the server’s tickrate; client commands cannot raise it. |
| Subtick implementation | Whether subtick is enabled and implemented consistently on that server. | A nominal rate does not describe how event timestamps are handled. |
| Network quality | Latency, jitter, packet loss and choke on the route you use. | A nominally faster server can feel worse when packets arrive late or are discarded. |
| Capacity and administration | Server CPU headroom, bandwidth and configuration practices. | Overload can produce missed updates regardless of the advertised rate. |
Official matchmaking is documented at 64 snapshots per second. For a third-party competitive service or community server, use its current technical documentation and your telemetry rather than assuming a particular rate. A provider’s label is not a substitute for observed delivery quality.
If you run a community server
Administrators need to separate two jobs: selecting a supported server cadence and keeping that cadence stable under real player load. The machine must have enough CPU capacity to advance the simulation and enough bandwidth to send snapshots; client-side rate commands cannot cover a shortage in either resource.
Document the server’s actual configuration for players, monitor packet loss, choke and jitter, and test after engine updates. If you advertise a rate, state whether it describes snapshots per second, whether subtick is enabled and what conditions apply. Do not present a client console value as evidence that the server is running at that rate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The practical verdict
CS2 is a 64-snapshot-per-second game with subtick event timestamps. Subtick improves the precision of when actions are recorded, but it does not turn official matchmaking into a 128-tick simulation. Keep client rate commands at sensible defaults, use the Source2 telemetry HUD to identify missed updates, loss and jitter, and distinguish network or frame-time faults from the server’s fixed cadence.
