Your strongest choice changes with level, ammunition supply, target, map, server rates, and whether you are playing PvE, PvP, taming, cave exploration, or preparing for a boss. A practical progression starts with a spear and bow, moves to a crossbow and pike, then adds the Longneck Rifle, Pump-Action Shotgun, Assault Rifle, explosives, and finally role-specific Tek weapons.

This guide covers the weapon progression shared by ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended. Survival Ascended is the remastered edition released in 2023 for PC, Xbox Series S|X, and PlayStation 5. Mods, balance changes, unofficial rates, and map-specific engrams can change the ranking, so treat the recommendations as a decision framework rather than a universal damage chart.

What “best weapon” means in ARK
ARK’s roster runs from primitive melee tools and bows to crossbows, firearms, rocket-propelled weapons, mounted siege weapons, and end-game Tek equipment. The ARK Official Community Wiki describes that progression as a move from items such as the Wooden Club and bow-type hunting weapons to guns such as the Pump-Action Shotgun, projectile weapons such as the Rocket Launcher, and Tek weapons.
A weapon can be “best” in one job and a poor choice in another. A Longneck Rifle is excellent for a deliberate, high-value shot but is awkward when a pack is on top of you. A shotgun is superb in a cave and expensive to feed during routine hunting. A crossbow may be less convenient than a firearm for direct damage but remains one of the most useful taming tools in the game.
#1 Best Overall
- Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
- Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
- Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
- Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
Evaluate every weapon on these questions:
- Purpose: Is it for direct damage, taming, hunting, harvesting, mobility, or siege?
- Range and control: Can you keep the target at a safe distance, and can you place accurate shots?
- Ammunition: Can your tribe produce enough arrows, bolts, shells, bullets, rockets, or element?
- Handling: How long does it take to draw, fire, reload, or recover from a missed shot?
- Durability: Can the item survive a cave run, and can you afford the repairs?
- Quality: Is the item primitive, a higher-quality drop, or a blueprint that justifies extra resources?
- Ruleset: Are PvE restrictions, PvP armor, mods, map engrams, or server multipliers changing the result?
Most weapons deteriorate and require periodic repair. Ammunition is also a separate progression: the ammunition engrams for stones, arrows, bolts, advanced bullets, and Rocket Propelled Grenades are learned separately from the engrams for the weapons that fire them. Unlocking a gun without planning its ammunition leaves you with an expensive item you cannot use for long.
Stage-by-stage weapon progression
Stage 1: first spawn and primitive survival
Your first defensive weapon should be a spear or another primitive melee weapon. It is cheap, immediately available, and does not depend on a stockpile of ammunition. Keep one ready for small predators, gathering accidents, and targets that reach you before a ranged weapon is drawn.
Craft a bow as soon as you have the basic fiber, wood, and thatch needed for it. The bow gives you distance against small threats and makes basic hunting safer. Carry arrows before leaving shelter; a bow with no arrows is only a tool-shaped promise. Primitive ranged weapons are also valuable because their ammunition is easier to replace than firearm ammunition.
Use this first loadout as a survival kit rather than a damage build:
- One durable primitive melee weapon for emergencies.
- A bow with a reserve of arrows for hunting and controlled pulls.
- Enough spare materials to repair the melee weapon after repeated fights.
- A retreat route or nearby shelter, because primitive weapons are not designed for prolonged fights against large creatures.
Do not discard the melee weapon when the bow is crafted. Durability, ammunition scarcity, and close-range threats make a mixed loadout more reliable than carrying a ranged weapon alone.
Stage 2: metal tools, crossbow, and taming utility
Once you reach the Smithy tier, move from the bow to a crossbow for stronger ranged attacks and more dependable shots. The crossbow pairs naturally with tranquilizer bolts, making it a practical taming instrument as well as a combat weapon. Keep ordinary bolts for damage and tranquilizer bolts for creatures you intend to tame; the ammunition choice is part of the tool’s role.
A pike or sword gives you a stronger close-defense option when your resources allow it. The pike is particularly useful when a creature has already entered melee range, while the ranged weapon lets you control the opening distance. This is a utility and survival recommendation, not a claim that one weapon dominates every map or server.
At this stage, ammunition management becomes a real preparation task. Learn the relevant arrow and bolt engrams, make more than the exact number you expect to fire, and keep a separate stack of tranquilizer bolts so ordinary combat does not consume your taming supply.
Stage 3: the first firearms
The Simple Pistol unlocks at level 34 and uses Simple Bullets. The ARK Official Community Wiki lists six shots before a reload and describes it as useful against weak-to-mid-range opponents, particularly players without heavy armor.

Use the pistol as an optional bridge into firearms rather than as your main long-term investment. It gives you a familiar trigger-and-reload weapon and can be useful when a target is mobile or when you need several shots in succession. However, the Longneck Rifle unlocks at level 35, only one level later, and fills the more important deliberate single-shot role. If metal, gunpowder, and bullets are limited, saving resources for the Longneck is usually the more efficient progression.
Simple Bullets are a separate ammunition requirement. Crafting or unlocking the pistol alone does not provide ammunition, so check the bullet engram and your production capacity before spending scarce materials on the firearm.
Stage 4: the Longneck Rifle and tranquilizer work
The Longneck Rifle unlocks at level 35. The official entry identifies it as having the highest damage per shot of any non-Tek gun, which makes it the best general recommendation for deliberate single targets, hunting, and high-value shots.
The Longneck is strongest when you can choose the engagement: identify a target, establish distance, fire accurately, and reposition before it reaches you. It is a natural weapon for hunting dangerous creatures from a controlled position and for taking a valuable shot against a player or creature that cannot immediately close the gap.
It has two handling limitations that matter in real play:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Scope sway: The scope continues to sway. Crouching or going prone can reduce the movement, but it does not remove the underlying limitation.
- Tranquilizer compatibility: The scope cannot be used with tranquilizer darts. Attaching the scope changes the ammunition behavior, so a scoped Longneck is not the same taming setup as an unscoped rifle.
When taming is the priority, carry a crossbow with tranquilizer bolts or use an unscoped Longneck configuration that supports the required ammunition. When precision damage is the priority, use the rifle’s single-shot strength and accept that it is not a rapid-fire panic weapon.
Stage 5: fabricated close-range damage
The Pump-Action Shotgun unlocks at level 55 in the Fabricator. It is an upgraded shotgun that fires more shots between reloads, making it the close-range workhorse for caves, cramped terrain, and targets that must be burst down before they can surround you.
Its value comes from encounter geometry rather than a universal damage number. In a narrow cave, several pellets can connect while the target has little room to evade. In open terrain, the same spread can waste ammunition or force you into a dangerous distance. Treat shells as a production cost, not an unlimited resource, and account for reload timing before committing to a fight.
Before a cave run, check four things:
- That you have enough shells for the expected encounters plus a reserve for the exit.
- That the shotgun’s durability is high enough to avoid a mid-run repair problem.
- That a melee backup is available if the weapon must reload or breaks.
- That the cave’s spaces actually favor close-range fire rather than long sight lines.
The Pump-Action Shotgun complements the Longneck rather than replacing it. Carry the rifle for controlled distance and the shotgun for the moment a creature reaches the tight part of the route.

Stage 6: automatic fire and heavy options
The Assault Rifle unlocks at level 58 and uses Advanced Rifle Bullets. The official entry lists a 40-round magazine, a five-second full-magazine discharge, and a 2.5-second reload.
This is the sustained-fire choice once your tribe can produce advanced ammunition reliably. It is useful when a target must be kept under continuous pressure, when several opponents are moving through an open area, or when a missed single shot would give the enemy time to reach cover. The short magazine discharge and reload window also mean that you should reload before an engagement rather than after the magazine is empty.
Automatic fire has a heavier resource burden than the Longneck’s deliberate shots and can consume supplies faster than a Pump-Action Shotgun in short encounters. Build an ammunition buffer first, then use the Assault Rifle where sustained fire solves a real problem. If bullets are scarce, the Longneck remains the more economical high-value shot and the shotgun remains the better tool for a close burst.
The wider roster includes rocket-propelled weapons and mounted weapons such as ballista and catapult turrets. These are specialized siege or encounter tools, not sensible everyday carry weapons. A rocket launcher belongs in a planned assault or structure-breaking operation; a ballista or catapult belongs where its fixed position and ammunition logistics can be supported.
Stage 7: Tek and end-game specialization
Tek weapons require the relevant Tekgrams. Ordinary weapons do not have that Tekgram requirement, so access to a Tek item depends on boss progression, element access, map rules, and the specific role the weapon fills. Reaching the end game does not make every Tek weapon automatically superior for every task.
End-game equipment should be assembled around the planned encounter. A boss preparation may call for a reliable firearm, a close-range option, taming utility for preparation work, and a specialized explosive or Tek item. A PvP defense may prioritize sustained fire, armor considerations, and the ability to carry enough ammunition for repeated engagements. A resource run may need none of the expensive end-game weapons at all.
Rocket launchers and other explosive weapons are encounter-specific and resource-intensive. Their usefulness depends on what can be damaged, the distance at which the projectile can be used safely, and whether the cost of rockets is justified by the objective. Treat them as planned tools rather than default replacements for a rifle or shotgun.

Weapon progression and ammunition progression are separate. The ammunition page covers stones, arrows, bolts, advanced bullets, and Rocket Propelled Grenades, and the ammunition engrams must be learned independently from their weapon engrams.

Use this preparation sequence before upgrading:
- Identify the ammunition engram. Confirm that you can learn the projectile, bullet, shell, or rocket recipe rather than assuming the weapon unlock includes it.
- Calculate the encounter supply. Count expected shots, add a reserve for misses and unexpected enemies, and include ammunition for the retreat.
- Check production materials. A firearm that consumes more advanced components can be less useful than a lower-tier weapon when the tribe’s production chain is still small.
- Split utility ammunition. Keep damage arrows or bolts separate from tranquilizer ammunition so a hunting trip does not consume your taming supply.
- Carry a fallback. A pike, sword, bow, or crossbow can keep you alive if ammunition runs out or a firearm breaks.
This is why a primitive bow can remain useful after firearms are unlocked: it is cheap to feed, quiet in practical terms, and adequate for low-risk hunting. Conversely, an Assault Rifle becomes a sensible everyday weapon only after your tribe can make Advanced Rifle Bullets in volume.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Quality, blueprints, and loot
“Best weapon” should not mean “highest item on the engram list.” The item-quality system includes Primitive, Ramshackle, Apprentice, Journeyman, Mastercraft, and Ascendant tiers. A strong blueprint or loot drop can make a nominally lower-tier weapon outperform a newly crafted primitive item.
Higher quality has a cost. The official item-quality information warns that better weapons can require substantially more resources than primitive versions. Repair bills rise with the item’s cost, so a high-quality shotgun may be powerful but expensive to maintain after a long cave run.
Use a quality drop when its role justifies the added burden:
- Longneck: A quality improvement is valuable when each deliberate shot matters, especially for hunting or high-risk targets.
- Pump-Action Shotgun: Extra quality can make close-range cave work more reliable, but budget shells and repair materials at the same time.
- Assault Rifle: A high-quality rifle is most useful when the tribe can sustain its Advanced Rifle Bullet consumption.
- Blueprint: Compare the material cost and expected durability before crafting; a blueprint that is too expensive for routine use may be better reserved for a boss or PvP stockpile.
Do not throw away a reliable primitive weapon merely because a higher-tier item exists. Keep the cheaper option for ordinary travel and reserve costly gear for encounters that actually benefit from it.
Choosing for PvE, PvP, taming, and caves
PvE exploration
For ordinary PvE travel, use a mixed loadout: a dependable melee weapon, a bow or crossbow, and a firearm that matches the expected danger. The Longneck is appropriate when you can control distance; the Pump-Action Shotgun is appropriate when terrain forces close combat. Avoid carrying siege weapons or large explosive supplies unless the trip has a specific objective.
PvP engagements
PvP changes the value of reload time, magazine capacity, armor, cover, and ammunition reserves. The Simple Pistol can punish weak-to-mid-range opponents, but it is an interim option. The Assault Rifle’s 40-round magazine and rapid discharge favor sustained pressure, while the Longneck rewards a player who can create a safe angle for a decisive shot. Server rules and armor progression can change which weapon wins a particular duel.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Taming
The crossbow with tranquilizer bolts is the dependable early taming choice. The scoped Longneck cannot be used with tranquilizer darts, so remove the scope or switch back to a crossbow when tranquilization is the goal. Carry ordinary ammunition separately and avoid spending your entire tranquilizer supply on a target that is not secure.
Caves and confined areas
Caves favor weapons that can deliver reliable close-range damage before a creature surrounds you. The Pump-Action Shotgun is the natural fabricated-tier choice, backed by melee equipment for reloads and emergencies. A Longneck is valuable in a chamber with sight lines but can be awkward around corners and swarms. Durability and shell reserves matter as much as nominal damage.
Best Value
Siege and mounted defense
Rocket-propelled weapons, ballistae, and catapult turrets should be selected for a structure, defense line, or planned assault. Their fixed positions, ammunition requirements, and resource cost make them poor substitutes for a weapon you carry during routine exploration.
A practical loadout checklist
Use the following checklist when moving between progression stages:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- New survivor: Spear or primitive melee weapon, bow, and arrows.
- Smithy survivor: Crossbow, ordinary bolts, tranquilizer bolts, and pike or sword.
- Early firearm survivor: Simple Pistol only if its six-shot role justifies the Simple Bullet cost; otherwise save resources for the Longneck at level 35.
- Single-target specialist: Longneck Rifle, appropriate ammunition, and a crossbow or unscoped configuration for taming.
- Cave runner: Pump-Action Shotgun, shells, melee backup, and enough durability and repair materials for the route.
- Sustained-fire fighter: Assault Rifle, Advanced Rifle Bullets, a reload plan, and a reserve weapon.
- End-game specialist: Reliable firearm, close-range option, taming utility, and only the explosive or Tek equipment required by the planned encounter.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the next weapon before its ammunition
Unlocking a weapon does not unlock its ammunition. Learn and produce the required ammo first, or keep the previous weapon equipped until the new supply chain is ready.
Using the scoped Longneck for every taming job
The scope is incompatible with tranquilizer darts. Use a crossbow or an unscoped configuration when tranquilization is the priority.
Taking a shotgun into open terrain without a plan
The Pump-Action Shotgun is a close-range tool. In open areas, spread and distance can waste shells and expose you to attacks. Use the Longneck or crossbow when you can maintain separation.
Running an Assault Rifle with no bullet reserve
A 40-round magazine can be discharged in five seconds, followed by a 2.5-second reload. Reload before contact and carry enough Advanced Rifle Bullets to finish the encounter rather than assuming one magazine will be enough.
Ignoring repair costs on high-quality gear
Higher-quality weapons can cost substantially more than primitive versions, both to craft and to repair. Reserve expensive gear for encounters that justify it and keep a cheaper backup for travel.
Assuming one ranking works on every server
Mods, unofficial rates, map-specific engrams, PvE or PvP rules, and balance changes can all alter the practical ranking. Use the weapon’s role, ammunition economy, and the encounter’s geometry to make the final choice.
Final decision: what should you carry next?
If you are deciding right now, carry the strongest combination your resources can sustain rather than chasing the highest unlock. Start with melee plus bow, move to crossbow plus pike for survival and taming, choose the Longneck for controlled single targets, add the Pump-Action Shotgun for caves and close fights, and adopt the Assault Rifle when Advanced Rifle Bullet production can support sustained fire. Add rockets, mounted weapons, or Tek gear only when a specific siege, boss, PvP, or end-game objective requires them.
