What “CS:GO is back” actually means
The return is a separate Steam listing for the legacy game—not a confirmed relaunch of the full CS:GO service. PC Gamer described the listing as unlisted in its March 4, 2026 report. That report is the basis for the listing and matchmaking details here; it does not establish what Valve may do next.
Valve’s current Counter-Strike 2 Steam page identifies CS2 as the current Counter-Strike product, built on Source 2. It also notes that reviews written before September 27, 2023 were for CS:GO, the legacy version. The separate listing does not change that distinction.
Can you still play CS:GO online?
In its March 4, 2026 report, PC Gamer reported that official matchmaking remained unavailable for the legacy game. It described joining community servers by opening Steam’s server browser and finding a server there.

That is a dated account, not a guarantee that any particular server is available now. The reporting does not establish current server counts, stability, or coverage by region. Valve’s GSLT bans guidance explains rules and restrictions that can affect community-server operators, but it is not evidence that official CS:GO matchmaking has returned.
What is still missing—or not confirmed
The reported absence of official matchmaking is a clear limitation. Beyond that, the available sources do not provide a current, complete feature-by-feature status for the standalone legacy app. They do not verify whether achievements, inventory access, or every other former service is available, so it would be misleading to claim that all those features are either restored or absent.

Valve has not, in the sources cited here, explained why the separate listing returned or committed to restoring matchmaking or other legacy features. A Steam page is not a promise of future support.

What to expect if you are looking for CS:GO
If your goal is to play the old game as it used to work, the key distinction is between finding its listing and having access to its former services. The listing’s return is real, and community-server access was reported, but official matchmaking was still unavailable in the March 2026 coverage. Check the current Steam listing and server browser for present availability rather than treating that dated report as a live status guarantee.
