The CS:GO update most closely associated with Christmas is Valve’s Winter Offensive Update, released on December 18, 2013. It added in-match gift-giving and holiday cheer, alongside new cases, maps and gameplay changes. Valve did not name it a “Christmas update”; Winter Offensive was the official name.
What was the CS:GO Winter Offensive Update?
Valve announced the Winter Offensive on December 18, 2013. Its event announcement summarized the release this way: “The Winter Offensive Update introduces gift-giving, the first ever Community Case, and a new eSports case!” The full release notes show that the update went beyond those headline features, covering maps, gameplay and quality-of-life fixes as well. What holiday content did it add?
Three ways to give in-match gifts
The update introduced three purchasable in-game gift options. Each distributed random items to players or viewers:
- Gift Package: a random item for a random player in the match.
- Pallet of Presents: random items for up to nine people in the match.
- Audience Participation Parcel: random items for up to 25 viewers watching the match.
Valve’s release notes also included the MISC line, “Added holiday cheer.” These were in-game features of the 2013 update, not physical gifts.

Which cases and maps were included?
Cases
Winter Offensive introduced the Winter Offensive Case, which Valve described as the first-ever community-made case. The existing eSports case was replaced by the eSports Winter Case.
Cobblestone and Overpass
The update added Cobblestone and Overpass for community servers and offline play. At launch, official matchmaking access was limited to Operation Bravo while Valve gathered map-balance data before a wider release. That launch restriction is part of the historical release notes, not a statement about present-day map availability.

Was this a Christmas update?
“CS:GO Christmas update” is a reasonable informal description because the Winter Offensive arrived in December and included gifts and holiday cheer. For accuracy, call it the Winter Offensive Update, Valve’s official event name. It was a 2013 historical release, not a current CS:GO update.
