Start with this quick check
Before changing Windows, write down:
- Which program or game shows the error?
- Does it happen when the program starts, updates, or performs a GPU task?
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Was the file recently quarantined, deleted, or removed during cleanup?
The exact application matters. cudart32_80.dll is a CUDA runtime library, not a general Windows component, and the filename alone cannot identify every program that may use it.
The safest repair is usually to repair or reinstall the application that displays the message. The file may have been installed privately beside that program’s executable rather than in a shared Windows folder.
What cudart32_80.dll means
cudart32_80.dll is a genuine NVIDIA CUDA Runtime library associated with CUDA Toolkit 8.0. The filename is associated with the CUDA 8.0.61 runtime.
cudartmeans CUDA Runtime.32identifies the 32-bit runtime.80identifies the CUDA 8.0 generation..dllmeans it is a Windows dynamic-link library.
It is not supplied by Windows and is not part of the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Installing Visual C++ may repair a different missing dependency, but it normally will not recreate this CUDA file.

A 32-bit application can need cudart32_80.dll even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit program normally needs the separate cudart64_80.dll instead. Substituting one for the other is not a valid fix.
CUDA 8.0 is an archived release. Installing a newer CUDA Toolkit is not guaranteed to install this older filename or preserve compatibility with software built for CUDA 8.0.
What the error message tells you
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because cudart32_80.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application has failed to start because cudart32_80.dll was not found.”
- “cudart32_80.dll could not be located.”
- “Error loading cudart32_80.dll.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in cudart32_80.dll.”
- “cudart32_80.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
A missing or not-found message usually means the application cannot locate the runtime it expects. However, “specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of the named DLL is missing.
An entry-point error usually points to the wrong CUDA version or a conflicting copy. The “not designed to run on Windows” wording can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible dependency. It does not prove that Windows itself is damaged.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This is the fastest and most likely fix.
If the program has a repair or verification option
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Open the launcher that starts the program.
- Select the affected game or application.
- Open its settings, properties, or management menu.
- Choose Repair, Verify, Verify integrity, or a similarly named option.
- Allow the check to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
The launcher should replace a missing or damaged private copy of the CUDA runtime. If it reports that files were repaired and the application starts normally, no system-wide DLL replacement is needed.
If no repair option exists
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, choose Installed apps. On Windows 10, choose Apps & features.
- Find the program that produces the error.
- Select the three-dot menu or the program entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available, and select Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the program entry and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or reinstall the program using its developer’s official installer or original launcher.
- Start the application before restoring optional custom files or modifications.
If reinstalling the application fixes the error, the original problem was probably an incomplete update, damaged application directory, or removed bundled runtime.
Do not assume that the first program you remember installing CUDA is the one producing the error. To identify the owner, right-click the application shortcut, choose Open file location, and inspect the folder containing the program’s .exe. A private cudart32_80.dll beside that executable belongs to that application’s installation.
Fix 2: Restore the matching CUDA 8.0 runtime
Use this step when the application documentation says it requires CUDA 8.0, or when repairing the application does not restore the file.

NVIDIA’s official CUDA Toolkit Archive contains the archived CUDA 8.0 installer. Use the NVIDIA archive rather than a DLL download sites page. Select the CUDA 8.0 runtime or toolkit component required by the application.
- Close CUDA applications.
- Open NVIDIA’s CUDA Toolkit Archive in your browser.
- Select the CUDA 8.0 release.
- Choose the Windows installer matching your operating system and application requirements.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Install the runtime or toolkit components required by the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected program again.
A normal toolkit installation may place Windows CUDA DLLs under:
C:Program FilesNVIDIA GPU Computing ToolkitCUDAv8.0bin
That does not mean you should copy the DLL manually from there into System32 or SysWOW64. Many applications are designed to use a private copy beside their own executable, and Windows searches the application directory early in the normal DLL search order.
If the application still fails after CUDA 8.0 is installed, verify its architecture. A 32-bit application needs the 32-bit runtime. A 64-bit application normally requires cudart64_80.dll, not cudart32_80.dll. Installing the wrong architecture can produce a load or entry-point error rather than a simple missing-file message.

You can check an installed CUDA Toolkit from Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
nvcc -V
This checks the toolkit version available to the command line. It does not prove that every application is using that installation, because an application may ship its own runtime.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a CUDA DLL if it was downloaded with an untrusted application, modified, or detected as suspicious. Do not restore it automatically.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cudart32_80.dllor the affected application. - Expand the event and inspect the file path.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from the application’s official installer or a verified NVIDIA installation.
- Run a full scan if the source is unclear.
- Repair or reinstall the application after making the decision.
A file in an unexpected temporary folder, a random download directory, or a system directory should not be trusted merely because its name looks correct. If Windows Security detects a restored file again, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from an official source.

Fix 4: Repair the application’s dependencies
If the error says that a module could not be found even though cudart32_80.dll is present, another required library may be missing.
First, remove unofficial DLL copies from the application folder if they came from a random download or an old manual repair. Then run the application’s official installer again.
Also check whether the application provides a Redist, Prerequisites, or Support folder. Its installer may include the specific Microsoft Visual C++ runtime it needs. Install the redistributable supplied by the application’s publisher, using the architecture required by that program.
Do not use registry cleaners or try to solve this by registering the CUDA DLL. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. CUDA runtime libraries are loaded by applications and are not normally self-registering COM components.
Do not run:
regsvr32 cudart32_80.dll
It will not normally repair a missing CUDA runtime dependency.
Fix 5: Check NVIDIA drivers only when GPU errors are also present
A display-driver reinstall is not the normal fix for a missing user-mode CUDA runtime DLL. Consider it when the same application also reports a CUDA-device, GPU initialization, display-driver, or graphics failure.
Update the driver through Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install an offered driver and restart Windows.
- Test the application.
For a clean, supported driver installation, use NVIDIA’s official driver source or the driver package recommended by the computer manufacturer. A current driver may support the GPU while still not supplying the old cudart32_80.dll filename.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers so you do not have to hunt through hardware entries and guess which package is stale; its free scan shows what needs attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the affected CUDA application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.

Fix 6: Check for Windows component corruption
Because this is a third-party CUDA file, Windows repair commands will not normally recreate it. They are useful only when other Windows components are failing too.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If DISM or SFC reports repairs, Windows system files were corrected. If the CUDA error remains, return to the affected application’s installer and CUDA runtime rather than repeating these commands indefinitely.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork of repeatedly running SFC and DISM by scanning for problems and showing what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the application that supplied cudart32_80.dll.
Fix 7: Use System Restore only after a recent change
System Restore is reasonable when the program worked until a recent driver, cleanup, or software installation changed the computer.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose Next.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling the owning application. If it does not resolve the problem, reinstall that application and its supported CUDA runtime.
Avoid unsafe DLL downloads and system-folder copying
Do not download cudart32_80.dll from random DLL websites. The file may contain malware, be the wrong CUDA generation, use the wrong architecture, or be incomplete because its dependent files are absent. A copied DLL can also conceal the real problem in the application installation.
Avoid placing it manually in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL and rename it to cudart32_80.dll. Do not overwrite an existing CUDA file simply because its name looks similar.

Does Visual C++ Redistributable install it?
No. Visual C++ supplies Microsoft runtime components, not NVIDIA CUDA runtime files.
Can I use cudart64_80.dll instead?
No. The 32 and 64 files serve different application architectures. A 32-bit application normally needs cudart32_80.dll.

Not necessarily. Newer CUDA releases may support the same GPU without providing this legacy CUDA 8.0 filename.
Should I register the file with regsvr32?
No. CUDA runtime libraries are not normally registered COM components. Repair the application or install the matching runtime instead.
Which application uses this file?
The filename alone cannot identify one universal application. Older CUDA applications, scientific software, media tools, GPU utilities, and other programs may distribute it privately.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
Check for the wrong architecture, wrong CUDA version, a conflicting copy, corruption, or a missing dependency. Remove unofficial copies and run the application’s official repair or installer.

Identify the exact executable producing the message:
- Note the program name and installation path.
- Open its installation folder.
- Check whether
cudart32_80.dllis beside the executable. - Review Windows Security’s Protection history.
- Check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application for an application error.
- Record whether the message says missing module, entry point, or invalid image.
- Contact the application publisher with that information.
The final repair should match the program that owns the dependency. Reinstalling Windows or replacing a CUDA DLL globally is rarely the correct first answer.
