“The program can’t start because dafupnp.dll is missing from your computer”
The dafupnp.dll error usually indicates a missing or damaged Windows component, not a missing Visual C++ or DirectX runtime. The safest repair path is Windows Update, followed by DISM and System File Checker.
You may also see:
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because dafupnp.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting dafupnp.dll.”
- “dafupnp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot find
C:WindowsSystem32dafupnp.dll.” - “The file dafupnp.dll is missing or corrupt.”
These messages can be reported by different Windows components or applications. The exact triggering program cannot be identified from the filename alone.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- The error appeared after an update, rollback, or interrupted shutdown: install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM and SFC.
- The file exists but Windows says it is damaged or not designed to run on Windows: check its path and Microsoft signature, then run DISM and SFC.
- Windows Security recently detected or removed a file: review Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error appears when using a printer, media device, network device, Bluetooth device, or Wi-Fi Direct feature: reinstall or update the related device driver after repairing Windows.
- Only one application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application if its installer specifically owns the failing component. Do not assume every program named in the error installed
dafupnp.dll. - The error continues after repair: use System Restore, a matching Windows installation source, or an in-place repair.
What is dafupnp.dll
dafupnp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL whose description is DAF UPnP Provider. DAF refers to the Device Association Framework, a Windows facility involved in discovering and associating network-connected devices.
UPnP means Universal Plug and Play. The Windows device-association stack can be involved when Windows discovers compatible devices on a network, including some printers, media devices, and other network hardware. Microsoft also documents DAF-related device scenarios involving Wi-Fi Direct printing.

That does not mean dafupnp.dll belongs to a particular game or commercial application. It is part of Microsoft Windows Operating System, rather than a separately installed Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET runtime.
A normal native copy is generally found at:
%WINDIR%System32dafupnp.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes normally use the redirected system-DLL view:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64dafupnp.dll
Microsoft explains this System32 and SysWOW64 behavior in its file-system redirector documentation. Do not copy a DLL between these folders manually.
Historical Windows releases contain different builds. A version number alone does not prove that a file is correct for every Windows installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A partially installed feature update or rollback can leave protected Windows files unavailable. Start with the normal servicing path.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately request a restart.
- Repeat the check until no further updates are offered.
- Retry the operation that produced the
dafupnp.dllmessage.
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance if updates fail to install. If the error began immediately after a specific update, note that timing and continue to the recovery options below rather than repeatedly reinstalling random DLL files.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when a valid repair source is available. Run them in this order.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for some time.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected operation.
Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions explain the results. If SFC says it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again and review the CBS log, or use a matching Windows installation source with the documented /Source and /LimitAccess options.
Repeating SFC without addressing the underlying component store does not usually add anything. If you want a guided way to identify damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly hunting through repair results, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues; its free scan shows what it found, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Check whether security software quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected system file. Do not restore a detection automatically.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection related to
dafupnp.dll. - Check the detection name, original path, action, and date.
- If the file was in an unexpected application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
- If the item is the expected Windows file and its authenticity is established, follow Microsoft’s guidance before choosing Restore or Allow on device.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward, then restart.
Microsoft’s Protection History documentation explains quarantine actions. If the file repeatedly disappears after repair, investigate Defender history, other security software, malware, unauthorized cleanup utilities, and disk errors.
Fix 4: Verify the path, signature, and architecture
Before deleting or replacing anything, inspect the file that Windows is trying to load.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Search for
dafupnp.dll. - If present, right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and check for DAF UPnP Provider, Microsoft Windows metadata.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present, and inspect the signer.
- Confirm that the path is a Windows system directory rather than a random download or temporary folder.
A Microsoft-signed file in the expected Windows directory is materially different from an unsigned DLL with the same name in an application folder. A signature check is useful evidence, but it does not replace DISM and SFC.
Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, have the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another Windows component is damaged. Microsoft does not provide a standalone “DAF UPnP Provider redistributable”; use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or Windows recovery instead.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally receives the appropriate system-DLL view through WOW64. Manually placing a 32-bit file in System32, or a 64-bit file in SysWOW64, can create a worse architecture mismatch.
Fix 5: Repair the related device or driver
If the error appears while using a printer, media device, network adapter, Bluetooth device, or Wi-Fi Direct function, the DLL may be exposed by a broader device-association failure. Repair Windows first, then check the device driver.

- Expand the category related to the failing hardware, such as Printers, Network adapters, Bluetooth, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the problem began after a driver update:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows.
For a persistent device-specific problem, right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and then install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update. Do not remove unrelated devices just because they appear under a similar category.

If manually identifying an outdated driver across several device categories is taking longer than the Windows repair itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation through the full version is optional. For a particular printer or device, the manufacturer’s official driver remains the definitive source.

Do not expect a generic “UPnP DLL” download or a random registry change to restore this component. You can confirm that ordinary Windows networking features are enabled, but this is not a substitute for DISM and SFC.
- Open Start and type Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the result.
- Review only features relevant to the symptom and Windows edition.
- If you change a feature, select OK and restart when prompted.
For network discovery symptoms:
- Open Settings.
- Select Network & internet.
- Open the active network connection.
- Set the network profile to Private only if it is your trusted home or work network.
- Open Advanced network settings and then Advanced sharing settings.
- Review Network discovery and related sharing settings.
These settings may affect whether devices are visible, but they do not prove that dafupnp.dll itself is the cause. If the file is missing from Windows, return to DISM and SFC.
Fix 7: Use System Restore or Windows recovery
Use recovery when the failure started after a known system change and normal servicing did not resolve it.
System Restore from Windows
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs without changing personal files. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
System Restore when Windows will not boot
Enter Windows Recovery Environment, then select:
Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore
Choose a suitable restore point and follow the prompts.
If no restore point works, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. An in-place repair installation can rebuild Windows while preserving personal files and, where supported, applications. Back up important data first and use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.

Why regsvr32 is not the fix
Do not run:
regsvr32 dafupnp.dll
regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. Known metadata for dafupnp.dll lists COM-related exports such as DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, not DllRegisterServer.
That means regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command and may return an entry-point error. A “not designed to run on Windows” message also points toward corruption, incompatibility, or an architecture problem, not a need to register the file.
If the error still appears
Record these details before asking for further diagnosis:
- The exact error text
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 and its build
- The program or Windows action that triggers it
- The complete path shown in the message
- Whether
dafupnp.dllexists in System32 or SysWOW64 - Its file properties and digital-signature result
- DISM and SFC result messages
- Recent updates, driver changes, cleanup tools, security detections, or hardware changes
If one application alone reports the error, repair or reinstall that application from its official publisher after Windows itself is healthy. If multiple Windows device features fail, prioritize Windows servicing, security checks, storage diagnostics, and recovery rather than reinstalling unrelated applications.

FAQ
Is dafupnp.dll a virus?
The filename is associated with a genuine Microsoft Windows component, but malware can use a copied or renamed DLL. Check the path, metadata, and digital signature, then review Windows Security.
Is dafupnp.dll part of Visual C++?
No. It is a Windows Device Association Framework and UPnP-related component, not a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET runtime.
Should I download dafupnp.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or Windows recovery. Random DLL downloads can be malicious, mismatched, or ineffective.
Can I delete the file?
Do not delete an existing copy before checking its path and signature. If it is a protected Windows file, deleting it can create additional system errors.
Recommended Free Tools
Will reinstalling my game fix it?
There is no reliable evidence that one particular game owns or triggers this DLL. Reinstall an application only when the exact error is application-specific and Windows repair has not resolved the problem.
Is dafupnp.dll required on every PC?
It is a Windows component, but not every program or device uses it directly. A missing-file error should be repaired because it indicates a problem with the Windows component or the operation that requested it.
