Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutecudart64_101.dll is a 64-bit NVIDIA CUDA Runtime library for CUDA 10.1. If Windows says cudart64_101.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the application requesting it and repair that application or install the exact CUDA runtime it requires.
This is not a Windows system file, and it is not normally supplied by the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. NVIDIA identifies CUDA Toolkit 10.1 as release 10.1.243, with CUDA Runtime libraries included in the Toolkit.

The 101 suffix does not mean Windows 10 and does not identify an NVIDIA display-driver version. It specifically points to CUDA 10.1. A newer CUDA installation is not automatically a substitute for a program compiled to request this exact runtime name.
Understand the error before changing Windows
You may see one of these messages:
The program can't start because cudart64_101.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because cudart64_101.dll was not found.
There was a problem starting cudart64_101.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
TensorFlow and similar software may instead report:
Could not load dynamic library 'cudart64_101.dll';
dlerror: cudart64_101.dll not found
A normal Windows launch error usually prevents the application from starting. In some TensorFlow 2.1-era CPU-only installations, the CUDA message could be a warning followed by CPU-only operation. That warning is not necessarily a failure unless GPU acceleration is required or the process stops.
1. Identify the program that needs the DLL
Do this before downloading or installing anything.
Look at the error window’s title bar. It may identify a game, launcher, Python process, plugin, or executable. If the message appears in a terminal, note the command or script you just ran. For a background failure, check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time the message appeared.
- Open the entry and note the application name or faulting executable.
If the error appeared while starting a game through Steam, Epic, or another launcher, the launcher-managed game is the first repair target. If it appeared while running Python, identify the active environment and package. If it came from a vendor application, use that vendor’s installer or repair feature.
The requesting program determines whether you need an application repair, a private bundled runtime, or the complete CUDA Toolkit.
2. Repair or reinstall the parent application first
This is the most likely solution when the error appeared after installing, updating, moving, or cleaning up a program.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a desktop application
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair button, open the application’s own installer from its official publisher and choose Repair, if offered.
For a game or launcher-managed program
Use the launcher’s file verification feature rather than copying a replacement DLL:

- Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface

- Open the launcher.
- Find the affected game or application.
- Open its settings or properties.
- Choose Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for missing or damaged files to be reacquired.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
If verification does not help, uninstall and reinstall the parent application from its official publisher or launcher. This restores the DLL together with its other dependencies and preserves the runtime version expected by that application.
For a Python or Conda environment
Activate the same environment used to start the failing script. Then repair or reinstall the package according to its package manager and documented GPU requirements. Do not install a system-wide CUDA version merely because Python is installed.

A package may expect CUDA files inside its own environment. Adding a different Toolkit directory to the global PATH can make the environment select incompatible libraries.
Run the program again after repair. If it starts, the parent application’s files were incomplete or corrupted. If the same error remains, continue by checking which CUDA release the program actually requires.
3. Install CUDA 10.1 only when the application requires it
If the application’s documentation explicitly requires CUDA 10.1, use NVIDIA’s archived Windows installer rather than a standalone DLL. The official CUDA 10.1 archive is the appropriate source for the legacy Toolkit.
Before installing:
- Close the affected application and its launcher.
- Confirm whether the application is 64-bit.
- Check its documentation for the required CUDA and cuDNN versions.
- Avoid removing another Toolkit version unless the application’s documentation tells you to.
Then:
- Open the NVIDIA CUDA 10.1 archive.
- Select the Windows installer matching your system.
- Download and run the installer.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the original application again.
CUDA Toolkit versions can coexist, but the application must find the intended runtime. Installing CUDA 10.2, 11.x, or 12.x does not guarantee that cudart64_101.dll will be installed or selected.
The current NVIDIA display driver is also not interchangeable with the CUDA Runtime. A recent driver does not prove that the CUDA 10.1 Toolkit files exist.
4. Check whether the file exists but is hidden from the application
A missing-file message can mean that Windows cannot locate the DLL, even when the file is already installed.
Open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem "C:Program FilesNVIDIA GPU Computing ToolkitCUDA" -Filter cudart64_101.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
If the command finds the file under the CUDA 10.1 bin directory, test that directory temporarily from Command Prompt:

set PATH=C:Program FilesNVIDIA GPU Computing ToolkitCUDAv10.1bin;%PATH%
Start the affected program from that same Command Prompt. If it now works, the application was not receiving the correct CUDA directory through PATH.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a permanent PATH change:
- Press Windows key and search for environment variables.
- Select Edit the system environment variables.
- Choose Environment Variables.
- Under User variables or System variables, select Path.
- Choose Edit, then New.
- Add the CUDA 10.1
bindirectory. - Select OK on every open dialog.
- Completely close and relaunch the application.
Use the directory supported by the application. A launcher, service, Conda environment, or packaged runtime may use its own search path and ignore a global PATH change. Services may require a service restart, while some GUI applications need Windows restarted before they see changed environment variables.
If the file exists and the error persists, the message may identify a missing dependency of cudart64_101.dll, not the CUDA DLL itself. Check the full dependency chain with a reputable dependency-analysis tool and verify that the executable architecture matches the installed runtime.
5. Check antivirus quarantine and security software
Antivirus or cleanup software may have removed a CUDA file, especially after an update or incomplete installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the problem began.
- If the file was quarantined, do not restore an unexplained standalone DLL.
- Reinstall the affected application or CUDA Toolkit from its official source.
- Run a security scan before testing again.
If a trusted installer repeatedly loses the file, check the security product’s quarantine and exclusions according to its documentation. Do not disable security software just to copy a DLL from an unknown source.

6. Confirm 64-bit and 32-bit compatibility
The 64 in cudart64_101.dll identifies a 64-bit runtime. A 64-bit DLL cannot be loaded by a 32-bit application.
Check the failing program’s documentation or executable properties. If it is a 32-bit application, it needs the corresponding 32-bit CUDA runtime where that runtime is available and supported. Installing only the 64-bit Toolkit will not make a 32-bit program compatible.
Do not solve an architecture mismatch by renaming files or copying a 32-bit DLL over a 64-bit one. Install the package built for the application’s architecture, or use a compatible version of the application.
7. Treat TensorFlow warnings separately
If TensorFlow reports that it cannot load cudart64_101.dll but continues running, determine whether the installation is intended to use the GPU.
Rank #4
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Powered by GeForce RTX 5060
- Integrated with 8GB GDDR7 128bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
For CPU-only work, the warning may be harmless. For GPU workloads, it means the CUDA stack is not configured correctly or the installed TensorFlow version expects a different CUDA and cuDNN combination.
Check the TensorFlow version’s installation requirements before changing CUDA. Historical TensorFlow releases used specific CUDA combinations, and current packaging and support have changed. Reinstall the TensorFlow environment according to the requirements for that exact release rather than guessing from the DLL filename.
8. Update the graphics driver when the application also reports driver errors
A driver update can help when the application reports a separate NVIDIA driver or GPU initialization problem. It does not, by itself, guarantee installation of cudart64_101.dll.
To check the driver manually:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the NVIDIA adapter.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver details.
- Obtain the appropriate driver from NVIDIA’s official support channel.
- Install it, restart Windows, and test the application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware entries and guessing which drivers are stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while the full version performs the driver installation. Reinstalling the CUDA-dependent application remains the definitive fix when that application’s own files are missing.
9. Use Windows repair commands only for broader system corruption
Microsoft’s System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management tools repair Windows components. They normally do not restore a third-party NVIDIA CUDA DLL.
Use them when several unrelated Windows applications are failing or Windows component corruption is suspected:
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process easier when you are repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows the reported issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It does not replace reinstalling the specific CUDA-dependent application.

Do not download the DLL from a random website
Standalone DLL download pages can provide the wrong CUDA release, wrong architecture, a modified file, or a file missing its dependencies. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the application that requested it.
Use the application’s official installer, its package manager, or NVIDIA’s CUDA Toolkit archive.
Do not copy it into System32
Copying cudart64_101.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 can create version conflicts and bypass the application’s intended runtime configuration. Keep the file in the application’s supported directory or the matching CUDA bin directory.
Do not use regsvr32 routinely
CUDA Runtime DLLs are not normally self-registering Windows components. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point, commonly certain COM or ActiveX components. Running:

FAQ
Is cudart64_101.dll a Windows 10 file?
No. It is an NVIDIA CUDA Runtime DLL. The 101 suffix means CUDA 10.1, not Windows 10.
Will installing the latest NVIDIA driver fix it?
Not necessarily. The display driver and CUDA Runtime are separate components. Install the CUDA release required by the application.
Can CUDA 11 or CUDA 12 replace CUDA 10.1?
Do not assume so. A program compiled against CUDA 10.1 may specifically request cudart64_101.dll. Follow the program’s documented compatibility requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does the message say the module is missing when the DLL is present?
Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the CUDA DLL, or the application may be using a different PATH, launcher environment, or architecture. Check PATH and the complete dependency chain.
Should I reinstall Microsoft Visual C++?
Only if the application separately reports a missing Microsoft runtime. Visual C++ Redistributable does not normally supply cudart64_101.dll.
When is System Restore appropriate?
Use it only as a fallback when the problem began immediately after a known system change and a clean repair or reinstall is unavailable. Restore the application and matching CUDA runtime first.
