nlsdata000c.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Its embedded description is “Microsoft French Natural Language Server Data and Code.” It belongs to Windows language and natural-language resources, particularly French support, rather than Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a graphics driver, or a particular game. Microsoft file metadata identifies Microsoft Corporation and Microsoft Windows Operating System.
The safest repair is to restore Windows components through DISM and System File Checker, not to download an isolated DLL. Follow the fixes below in order.

What the nlsdata000c.dll error means
Windows or an application may show one of these messages:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- “The program can’t start because nlsdata000c.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because nlsdata000c.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading nlsdata000c.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “nlsdata000c.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
A missing-file message usually means Windows cannot find the required language component in the expected component store or search path. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. It does not always prove that the named file itself has disappeared.

The file has appeared in Windows Vista and Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and related servicing packages. Both 32-bit and 64-bit variants exist. Version and size depend on the Windows build, architecture, servicing level, and installed language resources, so a single file size is not a reliable identification test.
Fix 1: Repair Windows automatically with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair when several applications are affected, the error appeared after an update, or the file is missing from a Windows component location.
Open an elevated Terminal
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin). On some installations, this is Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run these commands one at a time:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Then:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Then start the repair:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Finally, check protected Windows files:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window while either scan is running. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft documents this DISM repair process and the role of System File Checker.
Recommended Free Tools
Restart Windows after SFC completes, then open the affected program. If it starts normally, install any pending Windows updates and restart again.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows detected issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first steps.
If DISM says source files cannot be found
A damaged component store may prevent DISM from obtaining replacement files through Windows Update.
- Finish any pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install what is offered, and restart.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthagain.
If it still cannot find repair files, use Windows installation media or a mounted Windows image matching the installed edition, language, architecture, and build. An unrelated ISO can introduce another version mismatch. Microsoft explains the repair-source requirement in its Windows image repair guidance.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run SFC once more after DISM succeeds. If the result is unchanged, review the SFC details in C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log, then consider an in-place repair installation or System Restore.
Fix 2: Reinstall the French language feature
If the error started after removing French, changing display languages, or installing a language pack, repair the relevant Windows language resources.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, select Add a language.
- Search for French, choose the required regional variant, and select Next.
- Leave the available language features selected, then choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again using the commands in Fix 1.
If French is already listed, select its three-dot menu and review Language options. Remove and reinstall the language only if Windows allows it and you do not need the current language configuration immediately.
Windows 10 uses a slightly different path:
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select Language.
- Choose Add a preferred language.
- Add French and install its available features.
- Restart, then run DISM followed by SFC.
Language features vary by Windows edition and release. Reinstalling French may not reproduce every historical Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 file on a newer system. Windows language-pack information is available from Microsoft Support.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one older application reports nlsdata000c.dll, the application may be exposing a Windows component problem, or its installation may be incomplete.
First use the application’s own repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
If there is no Repair option, uninstall and reinstall the program from its original developer-provided installer. Restart after uninstalling before reinstalling. Do not assume that the application owns nlsdata000c.dll; the file’s Microsoft identity indicates that it is normally supplied through Windows components and language resources.
If the program is very old, confirm whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit program can require a 32-bit component even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit copy is not interchangeable with a 32-bit copy.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Windows file, especially after a damaged update or an unusual application launch.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
nlsdata000c.dll. - Check the reported original path and detection details.
- Do not restore it solely because the filename matches.
- Restore it only when the path, Microsoft digital signature, and Windows context are verified.
- Run a full scan.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward.
If the file repeatedly disappears, investigate antivirus logs, cleanup utilities, disk errors, and possible malware. A restored file should still be validated and repaired through Windows servicing.
Fix 5: Install pending Windows updates
An interrupted update or servicing failure can leave a language component incomplete.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms are broader
Driver updates are not the normal fix for nlsdata000c.dll. This is a Windows language component, not a graphics, audio, chipset, or DirectX library. Consider driver repair only if the same incident also caused device failures, crashes, or a recent rollback.
Use Windows’ built-in path:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the other symptom.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if prompted.
For a recently broken device, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify which of dozens of installed drivers is stale instead of making you compare versions manually; its free scan reports findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required for this DLL, and language-component repair remains the correct path for this error.
Why copying the DLL or using regsvr32 can make things worse
Do not download nlsdata000c.dll from a random DLL repository. An isolated download may contain malware, the wrong bitness, the wrong language build, an incompatible servicing level, or a file that does not match your Windows installation. It often fails because the real problem is a damaged dependency or component store.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDo not blindly copy a file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, WinSxS, or an application directory. The correct location varies by Windows release and component packaging. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is generally associated with 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 with 32-bit system files, so the names are not interchangeable storage targets.
A DLL beside an executable can also be loaded before the protected Windows copy, creating a version or security problem.
regsvr32 is normally irrelevant here. It is intended for self-registering COM libraries, not for general DLL repair. There is no evidence that this language data component should be registered with it. Running a command such as regsvr32 nlsdata000c.dll may produce an entry-point or registration error and will not restore a missing Windows component. Microsoft documents the scope of regsvr32.
Verify the remaining file safely
If the file exists, verify its location and signature rather than relying on its filename.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the file location reported by the error or application.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
- On the Details tab, review the description and product information.
A Microsoft signature does not make an arbitrary copy safe if it is in an unexpected application directory. Conversely, the absence of a signature can reflect an older file format, so use the path, Windows version, component context, and repair results together.
If the error appears during boot instead of application launch, use Windows Recovery Environment. Prioritize Startup Repair, System Restore to a point before the failure, and offline DISM rather than copying files manually. If disk corruption is suspected, check the drive and back up important data before attempting major repairs.
FAQ
Is nlsdata000c.dll malware?
The filename identifies a real Microsoft Windows component, and its recorded description is “Microsoft French Natural Language Server Data and Code.” That does not prove every file with this name is legitimate. Verify its path and Microsoft signature, especially if it appears in a temporary folder or an unrelated application directory.
Is it a Windows file or an application file?
It is a Windows language and natural-language resource. An application may report the error because it depends on Windows resources, but that does not mean the application originally supplied the DLL.
Do I need the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
Use the version supplied for your Windows build and component package. A 32-bit application may need a 32-bit resource even on 64-bit Windows. Do not copy both arbitrary variants into System32 and SysWOW64.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no authoritative reason to treat those runtimes as the normal repair for this file. Repair Windows components and language features first, then repair the affected application if only one program is involved.
What if “the specified module could not be found” remains?
The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Run DISM and SFC, check the application installation, and avoid adding unrelated DLLs to its folder.
When should I use System Restore or a repair installation?
Use System Restore when an available restore point predates the failure. If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows and a matching installation source is unavailable, an in-place repair installation is a safer recovery path than replacing system files manually.
