The game’s official Switch patch history records a past fix for a crash after using a relic, but that does not prove every current crash has the same cause.
Why can a relic crash Cult of the Lamb on Switch?
The official Cult of the Lamb Nintendo Switch patch notes list a version 1.2.1 fix for an issue where the game could crash after using a relic. Later entries also mention relic-related fixes, including an occasional softlock when equipping a relic, as well as additional general crash fixes. This establishes that relic and crash bugs have been addressed over time; it does not establish that every present-day crash is the same bug or that all cases are fixed.

Check the game’s software version on your Switch and install any update available to you. The patch history may not reflect the latest version currently offered to your particular console, so use the console’s update check rather than assuming a specific version is current.
Fix the crash step by step
After each step, start the game and return to the part where it crashed. Nintendo Support gives this instruction in its guide to “Error Message: The Software Was Closed Because An Error Occurred”. Testing one change at a time helps show whether the crash is resolved before you move on to more disruptive steps.

- Restart the Switch. If the console is unresponsive, follow Nintendo’s forced-shutdown instructions, then power it on again.
- Check for a system update. Open System Settings → System → System Update and install an update if one is available.
- Update the game. On the HOME Menu, highlight Cult of the Lamb without opening it, press + or −, then choose Software Update → Via the Internet.
- Check for corrupt data. Go to System Settings → Data Management → Manage Software → Cult of the Lamb → Check for Corrupt Data. If the Switch reports a problem, follow its prompts.
- Delete and redownload the game if it still crashes. Nintendo recommends redownloading the software as a later step. For its error-message guidance, Nintendo advises removing the microSD card before redownloading. Save data is separate from the software download; follow Nintendo’s current instructions for your region and account.
- Consider console initialization only after the earlier steps fail. Nintendo’s later-stage option, Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data, is intended to preserve save data, screenshots, and user information. Software stored on a microSD card may need to be downloaded again. Follow Nintendo’s instructions for this process carefully.
- Contact support if the crash continues. Nintendo says to contact support if the issue persists. You can also report it to the game’s publisher; include your Switch model, game version, the relic involved, where you used it, whether you play from a game card or download, and whether the crash happens again under the same conditions.
What not to try first
Formatting a microSD card erases data stored on it, so it is not an appropriate early troubleshooting step. Nintendo’s general downloaded-software guidance instead starts with restarting, updating the system and game, checking for corrupt data, and redownloading if needed. The established steps here concern software and data integrity; there is no evidence that buying a controller, microSD card, or other accessory fixes a relic-triggered crash.

What to include in a support report
- Switch model and the game’s displayed software version.
- The relic you used and the location or activity underway when the crash occurred.
- Whether your copy is downloaded or on a game card.
- Whether it happens every time or only intermittently, and which troubleshooting steps you have already tried.
