Cult of the Lamb is both a run-based action game and a settlement-management game: you leave camp to fight through randomized dungeons, then return to care for followers and expand your cult. That two-part structure is the game’s defining appeal—and its central caveat. It is not a pure action roguelite or a town builder, so players looking for only one half should know that both are integral.
This review covers the game as it stands across its post-launch updates, not a hands-on test of a specific current platform build. Woolhaven is a separate paid expansion; it is not required to understand or begin the base game.

What kind of game is Cult of the Lamb?
The game alternates between two connected activities. On expeditions, you fight through randomized, combat-focused dungeons and take on rival leaders. Back at camp, you recruit and look after woodland followers, build facilities, perform rituals, and develop the settlement. Progress in the cult persists between expeditions, while progress within a dungeon run is at risk when you die, as PC Gamer describes the structure.
The loop makes the two sides matter to one another: expeditions provide the action and forward momentum, while camp gives you ongoing responsibilities and a place to expand. The right fit depends on whether switching between those modes sounds engaging. A player who wants uninterrupted dungeon combat may find the management layer a distraction; someone seeking a quiet, purely decorative settlement game will still have to fight regularly.

How do the combat and management halves hold up?
Combat is built around repeated runs through randomized dungeons, while camp management asks you to maintain and grow the cult. Those are the systems that should guide a review or purchase decision: how enjoyable the fights remain after the first few expeditions, whether follower needs and buildings lead to satisfying choices rather than routine upkeep, and whether moving between camp and combat feels like a good rhythm.
Those are hands-on judgments, not conclusions that can be established from feature descriptions alone. No current, platform-specific playtest results are available here, so this review does not claim a particular frame rate, control quality, bug status, or comparative performance across PC, PlayStation, and Switch.

What did the post-launch updates add?
Cult of the Lamb has received substantial free updates since its August 2022 launch. The Steam listing describes additions across cult management and combat, including follower traits and progression, buildings, automation systems, combat options, and content in updates such as Sins of the Flesh and Relics of the Old Faith. These are meaningful systems, not just cosmetic additions, though the exact feature set can depend on the platform and version.
Local co-op
Unholy Alliance added local co-op, with one player as the Lamb and the other as the Goat. Devolver Digital’s announcement describes the Goat as the hero’s co-op partner. Nintendo lists the Switch version for one or two players on one system; that listing establishes local single-system support, not online multiplayer.

Which edition should you consider?

The expansion’s art director, James Pearmain, said the goal was a substantial experience players could “really sink your teeth into.” That is a description of the intended scope, not a substitute for a separate review of the DLC. If you are deciding between the base game and bundle, first decide whether you want the additional story content; the Switch bundle’s stated contents are the base game and Woolhaven.
What do the sales and review figures say?
Devolver Digital’s FY2025 investor presentation, published in 2026, reports more than 7 million copies sold since the game’s August 2022 launch. The presentation also reports 186,000 Apple Arcade downloads in the two weeks after its December 2025 release. These are publisher-reported figures.

The same presentation reports a 96% “Overwhelmingly Positive” Steam review snapshot. Steam’s live rating and review count can change, so that number should be read as the publisher’s reported snapshot rather than a current live total. Devolver also characterized January 2026, when Woolhaven arrived, as the game’s biggest sales month since launch; the presentation excerpt provides no unit count for that characterization.

Choose based on the platform you already use and whether local co-op matters to you. Nintendo’s US Switch listing supports one or two players on one system and says the game is compatible with Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. That compatibility statement does not establish native Switch 2 enhancements.

The available platform information does not support a reliable performance ranking among Switch, PlayStation, and PC. Check the current listing for your region and platform for the edition, player support, and features you need; claims about frame rate, bugs, or controls should be based on testing of that platform’s current build.
Verdict: who should play Cult of the Lamb?
Cult of the Lamb is most compelling for players who want action runs with a persistent settlement to build and maintain between them. Its free updates have broadened the feature set, including local co-op, and the Switch Woolhaven Edition packages the base game with the paid expansion. The trade-off is inherent to the design: you have to enjoy both dungeon combat and cult upkeep, and platform-specific technical quality cannot be inferred from the available feature listings.
