Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →cximagecrtu.dll is an application DLL from CxImage, an image-processing library. If Windows says cximagecrtu.dll is missing, not found, damaged, or could not be loaded, repair the program that installed it instead of downloading a replacement into a Windows folder.
CxImage is used by more than one application, so the filename alone does not identify the correct installer. It has appeared with unrelated Windows programs, including image, calendar, conversion, and mapping software. The correct fix depends on which application shows the error.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the parent application
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
First, identify the program that Windows is trying to start.
- Read the full error message and note the application name.
- If the message appears after clicking a shortcut, right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, check the Target field. The executable named there is the parent application.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc if the error appears during startup. Check Startup apps for the program’s name.
- Search Settings for the application:
- Press Windows+I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the program.
Once you know the application, try its built-in repair option:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no repair option, use the original installer. Download the installer only from the application’s official publisher, or use the same launcher that originally installed it. Run the installer as administrator and choose Repair, Modify, or Install if offered.
If repair does not restore the file:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the application again from its original vendor or launcher.
- Start it before restoring old custom files or backups.
The installer should place the compatible DLL beside the application executable. That application-local location is safer than placing a copy in System32 or SysWOW64.
Check the application folder
Open the application’s installation folder and check whether cximagecrtu.dll is present beside the main .exe file.
- If it is missing, the installation is incomplete, quarantined, or damaged.
- If it is present but the program still fails, the DLL may be corrupted, incompatible, or missing one of its dependencies.
- Do not assume that a DLL with the same filename from another program is compatible.
A successful repair is confirmed when the original application opens without the missing-file message.

Fix 2: Verify files through the game or application launcher
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
If the error belongs to a game or launcher-managed application, use its file verification feature before downloading anything manually.
The wording varies, but the process is usually similar:
- Open the launcher.
- Find the affected game or application in your library.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Select Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Wait for the launcher to replace missing or damaged files.
- Restart the launcher and start the application again.
Close the game completely before verification. If the launcher reports that files cannot be repaired, uninstall and reinstall the game from that same launcher.
This is preferable to copying a DLL manually because the launcher can restore the file version intended for that exact application build.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update, reinstall, or scan.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cximagecrtu.dllor the affected application. - Open the entry and review its location and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The file was inside a known, trusted installation of the application.
- The application came from its official publisher or a trusted launcher.
- You recognize the program and expected it to be installed.
If the file came from an unknown installer, a pirated package, or an unexpected folder, do not restore it. Remove the suspicious application, run a full security scan, and reinstall the legitimate application from its official source.
If antivirus repeatedly quarantines the restored file, contact the security vendor about a possible false positive rather than disabling protection permanently.
Fix 4: Match the application architecture and runtime dependencies
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A 32-bit application needs its compatible 32-bit files. A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit files. Windows 64-bit can run 32-bit applications, but their DLL dependencies still need to match.
Check the application’s architecture from its documentation or installer. You can also inspect the executable with a reputable dependency-analysis utility. Do not replace the DLL merely because its filename matches.
A mismatch can produce errors such as:
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows”
- “Entry point not found”
- Error
0xc000007b
If the application requires Microsoft Visual C++ components, install or repair the package specified by the application vendor. Microsoft provides separate x86, x64, and ARM64 Visual C++ Redistributable packages through its official download guidance.
Use these rules:
- Install x86 for a 32-bit application.
- Install x64 for a 64-bit application.
- On 64-bit Windows, both packages may be needed for different programs.
- Restart Windows after repairing the runtime.
The Visual C++ Redistributable supplies Microsoft runtime files such as vcruntime140.dll and msvcp140.dll. It does not supply cximagecrtu.dll. If the CxImage DLL itself is missing, repair or reinstall the parent application.
Fix 5: Rebuild damaged Windows components
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader signs of corruption, such as damaged built-in applications, repeated system repair errors, or several unrelated system files failing. These tools repair protected Windows components. They are not a guaranteed source for a third-party CxImage DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected application again.
Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.

If SFC reports that it repaired files but the application still reports cximagecrtu.dll missing, reinstall the application. SFC normally does not restore third-party application files.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC/DISM can be difficult when you do not know what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its full-version repair is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.

Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A display, imaging, scanner, or media application may fail after a driver update or hardware change. A driver normally does not install cximagecrtu.dll, but an application can fail while processing images through a damaged graphics or capture stack.
Recommended Free Tools
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Imaging devices, Cameras, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not uninstall a device driver merely because cximagecrtu.dll is missing. If the application works in other areas and only reports this DLL error, repair the application first.
Finding the correct driver versions by hand can involve checking many device models and reversing a bad update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the available updates; the full-version installation is optional, and it does not replace the need to reinstall the application that owns cximagecrtu.dll.
Do not copy the DLL into System32
Avoid downloading cximagecrtu.dll from a random DLL catalogue and copying it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A folder listed in the global
PATH
That approach is risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different CxImage build, use the wrong architecture, or lack other dependencies. It can also create version conflicts for unrelated applications.
Windows normally searches the application’s directory early in the DLL loading process. Microsoft describes this behavior in its DLL search order documentation. Application-local placement prevents one program’s private library from replacing another program’s expected version.
Manual copying is reasonable only when the source is the original installer, the same application’s verified backup, or the application’s installation media. Copy it only into that application’s own directory.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not run:
regsvr32 cximagecrtu.dll
as a general repair step. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the registration functions used by COM or ActiveX components. A normal CxImage runtime DLL is not established as a self-registering component.
If you run the command, Windows may report that the entry point was not found. That does not mean the DLL needs a different registration command. Microsoft explains the limited purpose of Regsvr32.
Windows Features and Device Manager are usually unrelated
Turning Windows Features on or off does not normally install this application DLL. Do not enable random legacy components to fix the error.
Likewise, Device Manager cannot restore cximagecrtu.dll. Use it only when the application also reports a genuine graphics, camera, scanner, audio, or capture-device problem.
Likely causes
| Cause | Most useful fix |
|---|---|
| Incomplete installation or update | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| Launcher file corruption | Use file verification or repair |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review protection history and reinstall if necessary |
| Wrong application build or architecture | Install the exact vendor build |
| Missing Microsoft dependency | Install the required x86 or x64 Visual C++ package |
| Damaged application files or disk contents | Reinstall the application and investigate disk health |
| Malware or untrusted installer | Scan, remove the program, and reinstall from the official source |
Public DLL catalogues do not establish one universal current version, size, hash, or architecture for cximagecrtu.dll. The correct copy is the one delivered with the specific application that is failing.
If the error remains after reinstalling
- Confirm the exact executable that produces the message.
- Open its installation folder and check for related missing DLLs.
- Confirm that the application and all dependencies have the same architecture.
- Check the antivirus history again.
- Test the application with a clean reinstall rather than restoring an old backup.
- Contact the application publisher with the full error text, Windows version, application version, and installation path.
FAQ
Is cximagecrtu.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is third-party application code associated with CxImage. It should not normally be expected in System32 or SysWOW64.

Should I download the DLL separately?
No. Use the original application installer, its launcher verification feature, or a verified backup from that same application.
Why does the error appear after an update?
An update may have been incomplete, quarantined, or matched with the wrong application build. The error message alone does not identify which event occurred. Repair or reinstall the affected application first.
Will SFC fix the missing file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while cximagecrtu.dll belongs to a third-party application. Use SFC and DISM only when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
