autoupdate.dll Errors on Windows: Find the Owner, Then Repair

autoupdate.dll is not a standard Windows DLL with one universal version or publisher. Its correct repair depends on the program that installed it, the folder where Windows expected to find it, and the exact error message.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before downloading anything or copying files, record:

  • Which application or game displays the error
  • Whether the error appears at startup, during an update, or when opening a particular feature
  • The full message, including whether it says “missing,” “specified module could not be found,” “bad image,” or “not designed to run on Windows”
  • The expected file path, if the dialog, shortcut, Event Viewer, or application log shows one
  • Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, antivirus detection, disk cleanup, Windows upgrade, failed uninstall, or manually moving the application folder

Do not assume that a file named autoupdate.dll belongs to Microsoft. The same filename has been associated with unrelated software, including media players, EaseUS-related applications, games, and older enterprise programs. Their files are not interchangeable.

Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error

This is the safest and most likely fix because autoupdate.dll normally belongs to the application that installed it.

Repair a Microsoft Store or modern Windows application

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the application named in the error.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Repair should replace damaged application files without removing normal application data. If it does not work, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you accept that the application may lose local settings or data.

Repair a classic desktop program

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Choose Repair, Change, or Uninstall/Change, depending on what the installer provides.
  5. Follow the repair wizard.
  6. Restart Windows and test the program.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or the official launcher for that game. Avoid restoring only the missing DLL. A partial replacement can leave the rest of the application at a different version.

Check the application folder

Open the program’s installation folder and look for the expected location. A legitimate application-owned DLL is usually beside the program’s executable or inside a vendor-specific subfolder, not automatically in C:WindowsSystem32.

If the application is installed through a launcher, use its built-in repair function before reinstalling. For Steam games:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the game and choose Properties.
  4. Select Installed Files.
  5. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  6. Wait for Steam to replace missing or damaged files.
  7. Start the game again.

If verification reports files that cannot be restored, reinstall the game from the launcher.

Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file

Antivirus software may remove a damaged or suspicious DLL. A quarantine event can also happen after an application update changes the file.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Expand recent detections.
  5. Check whether the affected application folder or autoupdate.dll appears.
  6. Note the detected path, threat name, and action taken.

Do not restore the file merely because the application requests it. First confirm that:

  • The path belongs to the application you installed.
  • The file is digitally signed by the expected publisher, if a signature is provided.
  • The application itself came from a trusted official source.
  • A fresh security scan does not identify the replacement.

If the file appears legitimate and Windows Security identifies a false positive, restoring it may be appropriate. If the path is temporary, unfamiliar, inside a suspicious startup folder, or pretending to be a Microsoft directory, leave it quarantined and scan the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a legitimate quarantine, reinstalling the parent application from its official source is usually safer than restoring the old file. Microsoft explains how to review detections in Protection History.

Fix 3: Install the correct application prerequisites

A message saying “the specified module could not be found” does not always mean that autoupdate.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Look for additional names in the error, application log, or Event Viewer, such as:

  • VCRUNTIME140.dll
  • MSVCP140.dll
  • A side-by-side configuration error
  • A missing .NET or DirectX component

Only install a runtime when the error or the application’s documentation identifies it as a requirement.

Visual C++ Redistributable

Microsoft provides separate packages named vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe. A 32-bit program generally needs the x86 package, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Installing only the x64 package will not normally satisfy a 32-bit application.

Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Older software may require an older Visual C++ generation, and multiple generations can coexist. Do not remove older redistributables simply because a newer one is installed.

.NET and Windows Features

If the program reports a .NET error:

  1. Open Start and search for Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Enable the .NET feature specifically named by the application.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.

Do not enable random features as a guess. If Windows cannot add the feature, install pending Windows updates and follow the application vendor’s documented prerequisite instructions.

Fix 4: Repair damaged Windows components

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a third-party application’s autoupdate.dll, so use them when several Windows features are failing, Windows itself is unstable, or system corruption is suspected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First install pending updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.

Then run DISM before SFC:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test the application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the affected program. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again after completing Windows Update, then repeat SFC. Microsoft documents this process in its SFC and DISM instructions.

Manually repeating these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected system issues, while its repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns autoupdate.dll.

Fix 5: Check architecture and compatibility

A replacement must match the application’s architecture and build. A 32-bit application running under WOW64 does not use the same DLL arrangement as a native 64-bit application.

Check the program’s executable:

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Right-click its main .exe file.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Details tab and note the product information.
  5. Open the Compatibility tab and check whether compatibility mode is enabled.

Do not infer architecture from your Windows edition. A 64-bit edition of Windows can run 32-bit applications, and those applications require their own 32-bit dependencies.

If the problem began after installing a different edition or unofficial repack of the software, remove it and install the correct build from the publisher or official game launcher.

Fix 6: Update a related driver only when evidence points there

Driver repair is relevant when the failing program is a hardware utility, capture package, printer package, game component tied to a device, or software that failed immediately after a driver update. The filename alone does not indicate a driver problem.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Choose Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for an error code.
  7. Review the Driver tab for the provider and date.
  8. Use Update Driver or install the current package from the hardware manufacturer.
  9. Restart Windows.

You can also check Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates for available driver updates. Install only a driver that matches the device and Windows installation.

Manually hunting through hardware pages and guessing which of many drivers is stale can take longer than the DLL repair itself. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing detected driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns the DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change

If the error appeared immediately after an update, uninstall, driver change, or security-software action, System Restore may undo the change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs.
  6. Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
  7. Select Next, then Finish.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore changes system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before continuing. Microsoft provides additional System Restore guidance.

Do not download or register a random DLL

Random DLL download sites cannot tell which application, version, architecture, or publisher your copy requires. The file may be incompatible, modified, infected, or missing dependencies, and copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder can create DLL search-order and security problems.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. Most application runtime DLLs do not need registration. Use it only when the software vendor specifically instructs you to register that exact DLL.

If the error remains

Collect these details before contacting the software publisher:

  • Exact error text
  • Application and version
  • Full path shown for autoupdate.dll
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Date the error began
  • Recent update, reinstall, cleanup, or antivirus event
  • Windows Security Protection History result
  • Event Viewer entry
  • Any dependency name mentioned in the error
  • Whether the failure affects one program or several

Open Event Viewer by pressing Windows + R, entering eventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs > Application for an error at the time the program failed.

Best Value

If several unrelated programs begin reporting DLL errors, stop replacing files individually. Investigate disk health, malware, security software, permissions, and Windows corruption. If only one obsolete application fails, it may no longer support the current Windows environment and may need a vendor update or replacement.

FAQ

Is autoupdate.dll part of Windows?

No canonical Windows copy is established for this filename. It is used by unrelated third-party applications, so do not treat it like a Microsoft system DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program installed my copy?

The error dialog, installation path, application shortcut, Event Viewer, file properties, and digital signature can identify the owner. The filename alone cannot.

Should I copy it into System32?

No. Copying an arbitrary DLL into a Windows system directory can introduce the wrong architecture, a mismatched version, or a security risk.

Will Visual C++ fix the error?

Only when the error also identifies a Visual C++ runtime or side-by-side dependency. It is not a universal repair for an application-owned autoupdate.dll.

Should I run regsvr32 autoupdate.dll?

Usually not. Registration applies only when the DLL is documented as a COM or ActiveX server and supports the required registration entry point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the file malware?

The filename does not prove that it is safe or malicious. Verify the path, publisher, signature, application source, and Windows Security result. An unusual location is suspicious but not conclusive.

What is the safest final fix?

Identify the parent application, use its launcher or repair option, and reinstall that exact program from its official source if repair fails.
