Cyberpunk 2 is still in preproduction, and CD PROJEKT RED is deliberately reshaping it rather than treating its first concept as fixed. Formerly known as Project Orion, the sequel completed its conceptual phase and entered preproduction on 28 May 2025. The studio’s latest statements describe a larger, Boston-led team testing ideas, reassessing Cyberpunk 2077, and deciding collaboratively what should survive.
Cyberpunk 2’s current development status
CD PROJEKT announced on 28 May 2025 that the project then called Project Orion had completed its conceptual phase and moved into preproduction. The company’s 2025 annual report records Cyberpunk 2 as still in development on 31 December 2025. Those milestones mean the sequel is being actively built, but it is not a finished or locked design.

The public name has also changed: CD PROJEKT now refers to Project Orion as Cyberpunk 2. No authoritative announcement has provided a launch date, finalized platform list, plot synopsis or complete feature list.

Gabe Amatangelo: game direction
Gabe Amatangelo is the project’s vice president and game director. He previously led Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion, and his role places him at the center of the sequel’s overall game-making and production decisions.

Igor Sarzyński: creative direction
Igor Sarzyński is creative director, responsible for narrative, world-building and lore. The North American team also includes Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty veterans, including Paweł Sasko and other senior developers.
This is not a project being shaped by one person working in isolation. The leadership structure combines game direction, creative and narrative ownership, design, production and the experience of developers who shipped the previous game.

What “evolving beyond the original vision” means
Sarzyński describes an explicit review of Cyberpunk 2077 rather than a simple continuation of its design. “We’re evaluating the previous game, kind of talking about what we liked, what had potential, but we could push it further, what elements maybe are not necessary going forward because I don’t know, they didn’t pan out, or we feel it would be better to put our work into something else that would be more valuable for the game,” he said.

- Keep it because it worked and remains valuable.
- Expand it because the sequel could realize more of its potential.
- Remove or replace it when the result did not justify the development effort.
Amatangelo describes the same culture as an ongoing challenge to assumptions and repeated iteration until the team believes the result is right. “This is part of CD PROJEKT RED culture,” he said. “We’re always wanting to do more.” The quote signals ambition, not a promise that every requested feature will appear.
How the larger team is making decisions
CD PROJEKT RED said in an October 2026 feature that more than 180 developers were working on Cyberpunk 2. That is a studio-provided figure, not an independently audited headcount, but it indicates a substantially staffed production spread across the company’s established teams and its Boston-led North American operation.

The practical consequence is that the sequel’s identity can change during preproduction. A concept that sounds central today may be reduced, redesigned or dropped if testing shows that another investment would create more value.

The staffing figure does not prove that Cyberpunk 2 will be larger in map size, story length or feature count than Cyberpunk 2077. It shows the scale of the current development effort, while the final product remains undecided.
Is Cyberpunk 2 still in preproduction?
Yes, based on the latest confirmed company information. The conceptual phase was completed before the 28 May 2025 preproduction announcement, and the 2025 annual report still listed the game as in development at the end of that year.
