For the post-2.0 game, the best starting point is simple: choose the playstyle that sounds fun, then spend perks and cyberware to make it work. You do not need to follow a single “best” build. This guide covers the base-game overhaul and distinguishes it from Phantom Liberty where the expansion matters.
Know which version and platform guidance applies
Update 2.0 overhauled core systems, including perks and police behavior, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. CD PROJEKT RED recommended starting a new playthrough to experience the changes fully, though existing saves could continue. The publisher also warned that older PC mods could cause disruptions or critical errors until updated. Read the Update 2.0 announcement.

The latest official update material identified here is Update 2.3, dated July 2025. Its FAQ lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Mac, and says the update is free for base-game owners, including those without Phantom Liberty or the Ultimate Edition. It also says a new game is not required. Those statements describe the Update 2.3 page, not necessarily the newest update available today. See CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.3 FAQ.
Choose a playstyle before choosing perks
Think about how you want to handle encounters: hack enemies and systems, move quietly, fight at range, or close the distance. Then select perks and attributes that enable that approach. Update 2.0 replaced the previous perk trees with fewer, more impactful perks that unlock distinct abilities, so your choices shape how V plays rather than simply adding small bonuses.

You can experiment: CD PROJEKT RED says perk points can be redistributed at any point outside combat. Returning players continuing a save after Update 2.0 also received a one-time opportunity to redistribute attribute points. Attribute redistribution should not be confused with the ability to reassign perk points. The Update 2.0 announcement and the publisher’s Build Planner announcement explain the changes.
Use a build example as a route, not a rule
CD PROJEKT RED’s Hack-&-Slash Netrunner example begins with Intelligence and RAM regeneration, unlocks Overclock, then adds Body perks to sustain health and support close-range fighting. It illustrates how a build can combine hacking with another combat style; it is not a universal recommendation. The official Build Planner covers the base game and, separately, Phantom Liberty’s Relic tree.

Make cyberware your main equipment-planning concern
Cyberware is central to both build synergy and armor. CD PROJEKT RED moved nearly all armor statistics from clothing to cyberware, so do not assume an outfit is protective just because it looks like heavy armor. Ripperdocs install new cyberware and upgrades, while your cyberware capacity limits how much you can equip. Capacity rises with level; the Edgerunner perk can let you exceed the limit, at a health cost. The Update 2.0 overview describes the system changes.

Prioritize implants that support your chosen approach rather than equipping whatever has the highest tier. A netrunner may value hacking support and RAM recovery, while a close-combat character may prefer implants that reinforce survival or aggressive fighting. Check capacity and the effect of each implant together before spending on an upgrade.

Let level thresholds guide expectations, not dictate every drop
Higher-tier weapons and cyberware become widely available at level thresholds, but CD PROJEKT RED Support cautions that these thresholds do not rule out finding items of other tiers. Its page, updated about eight months before access in 2026, gives the following broad availability points:

These are the support page’s broad thresholds for when tiers become widely available, not hard item-level caps. In particular, Tier 5++ weapons at level 51 are tied to Phantom Liberty. Consult CD PROJEKT RED Support’s tier guidance for the publisher’s wording.

Expect police pursuits and vehicle combat to affect the streets
Update 2.0 changed police responses: crimes can lead to pursuit according to your Wanted Level. It also added vehicle combat. Weapons and health items can be used from vehicles, and some vehicles have mounted weapons. That means a fight or escape can continue on the road rather than ending when you get behind the wheel. The Update 2.0 announcement outlines these changes.

Check PC requirements against your own hardware
For PC, use CD PROJEKT RED’s current requirements page rather than relying on an old spec list. It separates non-ray-tracing and ray-tracing configurations, and the minimum Update 2.0-era non-ray-tracing requirements list an SSD.
