This comparison uses CD PROJEKT RED’s published PC targets from 2023 and its next-generation console specification from 2022. Those figures are useful buying guidance, not fresh independent benchmark results. Current update information comes from the publisher’s July 2025 Update 2.3 materials.

The short answer: match the version to your hardware and expansion plans
Choose the PC version when you already have a computer that meets the game’s requirements and you value graphics controls, display-resolution choices, mod flexibility, or the possibility of upgrading hardware later. Choose PS5 or Xbox Series X when you want a straightforward living-room installation and the option of the performance and ray-tracing modes described by CD PROJEKT RED. Choose Xbox Series S when that is the Xbox hardware you own, while recognising that the publisher’s cited specification did not list a graphics-mode selector for Series S.
The best value depends on your local storefront. There are no universal current prices or stock conditions to quote here, so compare the exact platform listing in your region. If you want Phantom Liberty, check whether buying the base game and expansion separately costs more or less than Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.

What each edition contains
Base game
The base game is required before you can play Phantom Liberty. CD PROJEKT RED’s purchase page states: “Cyberpunk 2077 is required to play Phantom Liberty.” The base game continues to receive the publisher’s free base-game updates on the currently supported PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S versions.
Phantom Liberty
Phantom Liberty is a separate paid expansion rather than a replacement for the base game. It adds the expansion content to an existing copy, but it cannot be played without Cyberpunk 2077.
Ultimate Edition
The publisher describes Ultimate Edition as a bundle containing the base game, the free DLC released at the time of its announcement, the updates released by that point, and Phantom Liberty. It was announced for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with digital availability worldwide and physical editions in selected markets. A physical box or digital store page can differ by country, so verify the platform, region, and listed contents before paying.

Which platforms are currently supported?
CD PROJEKT RED’s July 2025 Update 2.3 page lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S among the platforms receiving the update and says it is free to owners of the base game. The same page also lists Nintendo Switch 2 and Mac, but those are outside this PC-versus-PlayStation-versus-Xbox buying decision.
Do not automatically assume that an old PlayStation 4 or Xbox One edition receives the same current updates. The cited Update 2.3 page does not list those older consoles. If you own an older copy, check the current platform listing and support information before treating it as equivalent to the current-generation versions.

When the PC version is the better buy
You want control over image quality and frame rate
PC lets you select resolution, quality presets, upscaling options, and ray-tracing features rather than accepting a console’s predefined modes. That flexibility is useful if your monitor is 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, or if you prefer a steadier frame rate over maximum visual detail.
Your computer already meets the target for your display
Do not judge suitability from a single component. Compare the processor, graphics card, memory, SSD, target resolution, desired frame rate, and whether ray tracing is enabled. CD PROJEKT RED cautions that results vary with hardware and software, graphics settings, and output resolution. Its figures below are publisher targets published in 2023, not guarantees for every system.

A desktop PC can be upgraded component by component. That can make the PC version attractive if you are willing to tune settings now and improve the graphics card or processor later. The trade-off is that setup, driver maintenance, and troubleshooting are your responsibility.

CD PROJEKT RED said the newer requirements did not mean the game would stop working on the previous minimum requirements. It also said it would discontinue active support and stop testing those earlier configurations after the next base-game update. Treat that as a support-policy qualification, not a promise of a particular frame rate.
Why an SSD matters on PC
With Update 2.0, CD PROJEKT RED made an SSD a requirement and advised against installing the game on an HDD because the game’s streaming bandwidth needs can exceed what a hard drive reliably provides. The published targets list a 70 GB SSD for the lower and mid-level configurations and 70 GB of NVMe storage for the 4K Ultra target.

- Check that the drive has more free space than the listed 70 GB so the installer and future patches have room to work.
- Install the game and its updates on the SSD rather than leaving the game files on an HDD.
- If you experience texture pop-in, long streaming pauses, or stutter, verify the installation drive before lowering every graphics setting.
How the PS5 and Xbox versions differ
PlayStation 5
PS5 has a dedicated current-generation version. CD PROJEKT RED’s next-generation specification described both a Performance mode and a Ray Tracing mode for PS5. The cited document is from 2022, so use it to understand the publisher’s intended mode structure rather than as a current independent measurement.

Xbox Series X also has a dedicated current-generation version, and the same 2022 specification described Performance and Ray Tracing modes for it. If you already own Series X, it offers the simplest route to the current Xbox experience without buying a PC or changing ecosystems.
Xbox Series S
Series S is supported as part of the Xbox Series X|S platform family. However, the publisher’s cited 2022 specification did not list a graphics-mode selection for Series S. Do not infer that Series S has the same resolution, frame-rate, or ray-tracing choices as Series X; the documented mode information distinguishes them.
No independent, up-to-date performance test is established here. Console results can also change with later patches, displays, and game settings, so treat the 2022 mode description as dated product guidance.
Expansion value: compare the actual local listings
There is no single worldwide price that answers whether Ultimate Edition is the better deal. Store prices, taxes, discounts, physical availability, and platform editions vary by region. Use this sequence:

- Record the current price of the base game.
- Record the current price of Phantom Liberty for that same platform, if you are buying separately.
- Record the price and contents of Ultimate Edition.
- Choose the cheaper complete route, provided both listings contain the same platform entitlement and the expansion is included.
If you already own the base game, buying the expansion alone may avoid paying for a duplicate license. If you own nothing and want the full story package, the bundle is easier to verify because the publisher explicitly defines it as containing both products.
Cross progression and moving between devices
CD PROJEKT RED’s Patch 2.13 notes say cross progression continues to function even when PC and console versions have different version numbers. That means a version-number mismatch alone should not be treated as proof that your save cannot continue elsewhere.
The cited notes do not detail every supported platform pairing, account-linking step, or regional restriction. Before switching devices, follow the current support instructions for the account system used by your copy, enable any required cross-progression feature, and confirm that the save has synchronised before launching on the second device. Do not erase the original save until you have verified the transferred progress.

- List the hardware you already own. If you have a PS5, Series X, or Series S and do not want a PC upgrade, that console is normally the lowest-friction choice.
- Set your display goal. On PC, decide whether you are targeting 1080p/30, 1080p/60, or 2160p/60 before comparing components. On console, expect the choices documented for that model rather than assuming every system offers the same modes.
- Check the PC target table if applicable. Compare CPU, GPU model and video memory, RAM, and SSD capacity against the 2023 publisher figures.
- Decide whether ray tracing is essential. Ray-tracing targets require substantially different hardware from the non-ray-tracing presets; the cited Overdrive target lists an RTX 4080 and used DLSS Frame Generation.
- Choose the edition. Compare separate base-game-plus-expansion pricing with Ultimate Edition on the same platform and in your region.
- Confirm current support. The current update information cited here covers PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, not PS4 or Xbox One.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying the expansion without the base game
Phantom Liberty cannot run by itself. Buy the base game first, or select a bundle that explicitly includes it.

Assuming an old console edition is identical
The current Update 2.3 platform list does not include PS4 or Xbox One. Check the exact edition and update policy instead of relying on a previous-generation disc or store listing.

Using the wrong PC comparison
A graphics card alone does not establish performance. Match the complete CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD, resolution, preset, and frame-rate target. The publisher’s figures are dated targets and can vary in practice.
Installing to an HDD
Move the installation to an SSD. Update 2.0 made SSD use a requirement because streaming demands can exceed dependable HDD bandwidth.
Assuming Series S has Series X modes
The publisher’s 2022 specification listed modes for PS5 and Series X but did not list a graphics-mode selector for Series S. Treat the models as different hardware choices.

Expecting cross progression to explain itself
Cross progression is confirmed to work despite version-number differences, but the cited notes do not provide every setup condition. Follow current account and synchronisation instructions before changing devices.
Bottom line
Buy the PC version if your computer meets the target for the resolution and frame rate you actually want, and you value adjustable settings enough to manage hardware and storage requirements. Buy the PS5 or Xbox Series X version if you prefer a simpler current-generation console experience with the publisher-documented Performance and Ray Tracing modes. Buy on Xbox Series S when that is your available console, but do not assume it has Series X’s mode choices. For any platform, compare the local cost of the base game plus Phantom Liberty with Ultimate Edition, and verify the exact regional listing before checkout.
