Steam Input FAQ: Controller Support, Layouts, and Troubleshooting

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Steam Input is Valve’s controller-configuration system. Connect a gamepad, enable the matching controller support option in Steam when needed, then open the game’s controller configuration from your Library. Steam can expose a game’s own actions through a native layout, or translate controller input into keyboard, mouse, or XInput-style gamepad signals through legacy mode.

The exact controls shown depend on both the controller and the game. Valve’s documentation lists the major device families and the setup flow, but Steam’s menu labels and screenshots can change as the client is updated. Use the current labels in your client while following the routes below.

What Steam Input does

Steam Input is the layer between a physical controller and a game launched through Steam. It lets you select or create per-game bindings instead of relying only on a game’s own controller menu. The system can pass through a game’s defined actions when the game has native Steam Input integration, or emulate other input devices when it does not.

Valve distinguishes the player-facing configuration system from the Steam Input API used by developers. A native game can define named actions and organize them into action sets for contexts such as menus and gameplay. A game without that integration can still use Steam Input’s legacy mode, where each controller control is bound to a keyboard key, mouse function, or XInput-style gamepad signal. Valve says “‘Legacy mode’ bindings are always available for any game.” (Valve’s legacy-mode documentation).

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

That distinction explains why two games can show very different editors. One may offer actions such as Jump, Inventory, or Confirm; another may show keyboard keys, mouse regions, and generic gamepad buttons. Neither editor is necessarily broken: it reflects the game’s implementation.

For an overview of the system, see Valve’s Steam Input overview.

Which controllers Steam Input supports

Valve writes that Steam Input supports all the major controllers used with Steam, then qualifies that statement with a documented device list. The list describes protocols and families, not a guarantee that every model, driver, wireless adapter, or game combination will behave identically.

Device family listed by Valve What that means in practice
Steam Controller Valve’s own controller protocol is supported.
PlayStation 4 PS4 controllers are a documented supported family.
Xbox 360 Xbox 360 controllers are listed as supported.
Xbox One Xbox One controllers are listed as supported.
Nintendo Switch Pro Switch Pro controllers are listed as supported.
Steam Link App Mobile Touch Controller The mobile touch controller exposed by the Steam Link app is included.
PlayStation 3 PS3 controllers are listed, subject to the operating system and driver path used.
Any DirectInput gamepad DirectInput is a broad protocol category; individual hardware, drivers, connection methods, and games can still differ.

See the complete, current list at Valve’s Steam Input Devices page. Valve notes that some names represent variants using the same input protocol. If a generic pad is not detected, first verify that the operating system sees it and that its driver or wireless receiver is working; “DirectInput” support does not promise universal compatibility.

How to connect a controller and enable Steam Input

Steam must see the controller before it can offer the game-specific configuration entry. Connect or pair the device, charge it if necessary, and then check Steam’s controller settings.

  1. Connect the controller. Use USB, Bluetooth, or the adapter required by that controller. Confirm that the device is powered on and paired at the operating-system level.
  2. Open Steam’s controller settings. In the desktop client, open Steam’s Settings and select the Controller section. In Big Picture mode, open Settings and then Controller. The wording and placement can change, so follow the current equivalent labels.
  3. Enable the relevant support option. Where Steam presents family-specific options, enable the one matching your controller, such as PlayStation, Xbox, Switch Pro, or generic gamepad support. Some devices are detected without an additional checkbox; the important test is whether Steam lists the controller.
  4. Check the controller test or calibration view, if available. Move sticks and press buttons to verify that Steam receives input. A device that fails here needs an operating-system, cable, pairing, battery, or driver check before game-level troubleshooting.
  5. Open your Library. Select the game you want to configure. Valve’s player guide says the per-game controller-configuration option appears only when a controller is connected.

Valve’s player workflow is documented in the Steam Input player setup guide. Its screenshots may not match your client exactly, but the sequence—connect, verify controller settings, then configure the game—remains the useful pattern.

How to find and edit a game’s layout

With the controller connected, open the game’s Library page and choose its controller configuration or controller-layout entry. Depending on the Steam client view, this may be a controller icon near the Play button, an entry in the game’s management menu, or a similarly named command. If the entry is missing, return to the detection checks in the troubleshooting section below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an existing layout

  1. Open the game’s controller-configuration screen from the Library.
  2. Review the layout currently assigned to the game.
  3. Browse Steam’s recommended, community, or previously saved layouts when those categories are offered.
  4. Preview the bindings before applying one. Check movement, camera, menu navigation, confirm/cancel, and any game-specific controls you use often.
  5. Apply the layout and launch the game to test it in an actual menu and gameplay session.

Availability of community or recommended layouts varies by game and controller. Do not assume that every title has a professionally authored profile or that a popular profile matches your preferred button labels.

Create or change bindings

Select the control you want to edit—such as a face button, trigger, stick, gyro, pad, or back input when your hardware exposes one—and assign the action presented by the editor. In a native game, the assignment may be a named action supplied by the developer. In legacy mode, you choose a keyboard key, mouse command, or gamepad button instead.

Save the layout to the appropriate scope shown by Steam. A personal layout can be used only by you; a shared layout, if the client offers that option, can be published for other players. Test after saving because a binding can be correct in Steam’s preview yet conflict with the game’s own input handling.

Native actions versus legacy mode

Aspect Native Steam Input Legacy mode
What Steam sends Actions defined by the game, often with action sets for contexts such as menus and gameplay. Emulated keyboard, mouse, or XInput-style gamepad input.
How the editor looks Named in-game actions and game-specific categories. Keys, mouse regions or clicks, and generic controller buttons.
Game requirement The developer must implement Steam Input actions or API support. Available for any game, including titles that know nothing about Steam Input.
Main advantage Bindings can follow the game’s semantic actions and switch cleanly between contexts. Can make an otherwise keyboard-and-mouse game usable with a controller.
Main risk The available actions are limited to what the game exposes. Keyboard-layout differences and mixed-input behavior can cause unexpected results.

Native action sets are useful when a game changes controls between gameplay, menus, vehicles, or other contexts. The game can expose those contexts to Steam Input, allowing a layout to present different bindings at the appropriate time. The exact action names and sets are game-specific; Steam cannot invent a missing action.

Legacy mode is more universal but less semantic. Binding a controller button to the letter shown on your keyboard does not mean Steam is sending a game-specific “interact” action—it is sending that keyboard input. This distinction matters when a title changes its keyboard bindings or when multiple devices are active.

Troubleshooting controller detection and layouts

The controller is not listed in Steam

  • Reconnect the USB cable, re-pair Bluetooth, or reseat the wireless receiver. Check battery level and confirm that the operating system detects the device.
  • Open Steam’s Settings > Controller page and look for the matching support option or device entry. Enable the relevant option when Steam provides one.
  • Close and reopen Steam after pairing a device that was connected while the client was running.
  • Return to the game’s Library page only after Steam lists the controller. Valve’s guide explicitly notes that a connected controller is required for the per-game configuration option to appear.
  • If a generic DirectInput pad remains absent, investigate its driver and connection mode. Valve’s list is a protocol-level description, not a guarantee for every unbranded model.

The game has no controller-configuration option

First confirm that Steam sees the controller; the configuration command can be hidden when no controller is connected. Then check the game’s Library page and its management or controller menu. Client redesigns can move the command, so look for “Controller,” “Controller Configuration,” or an equivalent current label rather than relying on an old screenshot.

A PlayStation controller appears as an Xbox controller

External remapping software can create an emulated Xbox 360 device. Valve specifically names DS4Windows and InputMapper as examples. Steam may then communicate with the emulated Xbox device instead of the original PlayStation controller, so the layout displays Xbox-style buttons or the wrong controller family.

Close or disable the external remapper temporarily, disconnect duplicate virtual devices, and reconnect the physical controller. If you intentionally use the remapper for another application, choose one input path at a time to avoid duplicate or competing devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The layout opens, but the game ignores input

Separate Steam recognition from game-level handling. Steam can show a working preview while the game filters or conflicts with the resulting inputs. Valve’s developer guidance identifies simultaneous gamepad and mouse input as a common compatibility issue.

  • Check whether the layout sends keyboard or mouse signals while the game is also receiving a physical gamepad.
  • Try one input style at a time: a native gamepad layout, a keyboard-and-mouse legacy layout, or a direct physical-gamepad path.
  • Look at the game’s own control settings for duplicate bindings or a setting that switches input prompts when mouse movement is detected.
  • If the title still behaves incorrectly, consult its support information. Valve’s documentation does not establish one universal end-user fix for every game that mixes input types.

Keyboard bindings produce the wrong characters

Legacy keyboard bindings are sent as scancodes. The resulting character depends on the operating system’s keyboard layout, so a key that works as expected on a standard US layout can produce a different result on Dvorak, Colemak, or another layout.

Check the game’s current keyboard bindings and revise the Steam mapping to match the physical keys the game expects. If possible, test the binding in a text field and in the game’s own controls screen; the visible character is not always the same as the scancode Steam sends.

Buttons work in menus but not during play

This often indicates a context or action-set difference rather than a dead button. Native games may switch from a menu action set to a gameplay set. Review both sets in the layout editor and verify that the game is changing contexts as intended. In legacy mode, inspect whether a mode shift, radial menu, or long-press behavior changes the binding after launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose the right mapping approach

  • Use native actions when available. They are the clearest match for the game’s intended controls and can support context-specific action sets.
  • Use legacy gamepad emulation when the game understands an XInput-style controller but does not expose native Steam Input actions.
  • Use legacy keyboard or mouse emulation for games that only accept keyboard-and-mouse controls, while checking scancode and keyboard-layout implications.
  • Avoid unnecessary remapping layers. Every additional virtual device can change what Steam detects and can create duplicate input.

Make one change at a time and test it in the game’s title screen, a menu, and a representative gameplay moment. That sequence distinguishes a connection problem from a layout problem and a layout problem from the game’s own input handling.

What Steam Input does not guarantee

Valve’s supported-device page documents major controller families and DirectInput gamepads, but it does not promise that every exact model, driver, wireless method, operating system, or game will behave identically. A controller can be electrically functional yet expose an unexpected protocol, appear twice because of a virtual driver, or be accepted by Steam but mishandled by a particular game.

Likewise, a native Steam Input layout is not available simply because a game runs through Steam. The developer must define the actions. When those actions are absent, legacy mode remains the broad fallback, with the keyboard-layout and mixed-input limitations described above.

Valve’s player and developer pages are undated and may change as Steam evolves. Use the current client labels and the latest versions of the linked documentation when a menu path differs from the one described here.
