“cygsqlite3-0.dll was not found” — what the error means
The cygsqlite3-0.dll error means a Cygwin-based program cannot load its SQLite runtime library. You may see messages such as:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cygsqlite3-0.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find cygsqlite3-0.dll.”
- “cygsqlite3-0.dll could not be located.”
- “cygsqlite3-0.dll error loading.”
- “The program can’t start because cygsqlite3-0.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
The 60-second answer
cygsqlite3-0.dll is the Cygwin build of SQLite 3. It is not a Windows system file, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component or .NET file.

The safest fix is to identify the Cygwin installation or application that is requesting it, then rerun that installation’s official repair or package setup. For a normal Cygwin installation:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Close the affected program and all Cygwin terminals.
- Rerun the official Cygwin installer.
- Select the existing Cygwin root, such as
C:cygwin64. - Search for
libsqlite3_0. - Mark it for installation or reinstallation.
- Allow Setup to resolve dependencies.
- Finish the installation and restart the program.
Do not download this DLL from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The wrong architecture, a damaged binary or an incomplete dependency chain can leave the program broken, while an untrusted file creates an unnecessary security risk.

What cygsqlite3-0.dll is
SQLite is an embedded C database engine. Cygwin compiles SQLite for the Cygwin environment and supplies it as a shared library named cygsqlite3-0.dll.
The cyg prefix identifies a Cygwin-built DLL. In a typical 64-bit installation, the file belongs here:
C:cygwin64bincygsqlite3-0.dll
Older or 32-bit installations commonly use:
C:cygwinbincygsqlite3-0.dll
Cygwin’s runtime package is named libsqlite3_0. The separate sqlite3 package depends on it. Packages and applications that use SQLite can therefore fail when this runtime is absent, damaged or incompatible. Examples include Cygwin versions of OpenSSH, Python, Subversion, database utilities and other software linked against SQLite.
The filename alone does not identify the exact program that failed. The caller may be a normal Cygwin command, a Windows shortcut that launches Cygwin software or a third-party application containing a private Cygwin runtime.
Why similar SQLite DLLs are not substitutes
Do not rename another SQLite library to make the error disappear. These files belong to different environments:
| File name | Typical environment |
|---|---|
cygsqlite3-0.dll |
Cygwin |
msys-sqlite3-0.dll |
MSYS2 |
libsqlite3-0.dll |
Native Windows or MinGW builds |
sqlite3.dll |
Product-specific or application-specific builds |
The names may refer to the same underlying database technology, but the binaries are not interchangeable. A Cygwin program needs the Cygwin runtime that matches its installation and architecture.
Fix 1: Repair the existing Cygwin installation
This is the most likely fix when the error appears in a Cygwin terminal or when the affected program was installed directly through Cygwin.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Step 1: Close programs using Cygwin
Save your work, then close:
- Cygwin terminals
- Cygwin services
- OpenSSH sessions
- Editors or scripts launched from Cygwin
- The application showing the error
Files in use can prevent Setup from replacing them.
Step 2: Run Cygwin Setup again
Start the Cygwin installer you originally used. Choose the existing root rather than creating a second installation. Common roots include:
C:cygwin64
C:cygwin
Continue through the mirror and installation screens until the package-selection page appears.
Step 3: Select the SQLite runtime
Use the package search box and enter:
libsqlite3_0
Select the package so its action changes to installation or reinstallation. Allow Setup to select dependencies and related package updates.
Cygwin currently lists libsqlite3_0 as the SQLite runtime package. Package versions can change, so do not attempt to force a particular file version manually.
Step 4: Complete Setup
Allow the installer to finish. If Setup reports that files are in use, close more Cygwin programs and run it again.
Afterward, check whether the file exists under the relevant bin directory:
C:cygwin64bincygsqlite3-0.dll
Then start the affected program. Success means the original loader error is gone. If a new missing-DLL message appears, the SQLite library was only one item in a damaged dependency chain. Continue updating the required Cygwin packages instead of downloading individual files.

setup-x86_64.exe -q -P libsqlite3_0
The installer still requires a valid mirror and an existing Cygwin installation context.
Fix 2: Repair an application that bundles Cygwin
Some Windows applications ship a private or bundled Cygwin environment. In that situation, copying a DLL from C:cygwin64bin into the application directory can make the installation less reliable or introduce an architecture mismatch.
Use the application’s own repair path first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not resolve the error, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- Start the application again.
If those options do not exist, download the installer from the application developer’s official website and reinstall the program. If the launcher provides Verify files, Repair installation or a similar option, use that before manually changing DLLs.

A bundled application may require its own copy of cygsqlite3-0.dll, even when a separate Cygwin installation on the same computer is healthy.
Fix 3: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
Both Cygwin architectures can use the filename cygsqlite3-0.dll, but their binaries are not interchangeable.

A 64-bit caller generally needs the 64-bit Cygwin runtime, while a 32-bit caller needs the matching 32-bit environment. Do not replace a missing file in a 64-bit installation with a file taken from a 32-bit installation.
To identify the affected executable:
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note whether it points into
C:cygwin64,C:cygwin, or an application-specific directory. - Repair that installation rather than another Cygwin copy.
If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” the binary may be for the wrong architecture, truncated or damaged. Reinstall the complete owning package instead of trying different downloaded DLLs.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine or remove a valid Cygwin library after an update or scan.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the Cygwin installation or the affected application.
- Do not restore the file blindly. Confirm that the original path and application are trusted.
- If the installation is trusted, restore the item according to your security software’s instructions.
- Rerun Cygwin Setup or the application’s official installer to verify the package.
If the file keeps disappearing, scan the installation and check the security product’s exclusion policy with your administrator. Reinstalling the package is preferable to retaining an isolated DLL restored from quarantine.

When the error appears outside a Cygwin terminal, find out which executable is requesting the DLL.
Check the shortcut’s Target field, Task Manager, the application’s installation directory and any launcher logs. Pay attention to whether the path points to:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →C:cygwin64binC:cygwinbin- A private application directory
- A temporary extraction directory
- A service or scheduled task
Within Cygwin, these commands can help:
cygcheck -f /usr/bin/cygsqlite3-0.dll
cygcheck -p cygsqlite3-0.dll
The first checks package ownership for a local file. The second searches Cygwin package contents. If the executable itself is damaged or several dependencies are absent, repair the owning package or application rather than replacing SQLite alone.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader damage
cygsqlite3-0.dll is not a protected Windows component, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. Use Windows repair commands only when you also have wider symptoms such as damaged built-in apps, failed Windows components or unexplained system corruption.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application.
These commands are not a substitute for reinstalling libsqlite3_0 or repairing a bundled Cygwin application.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling the program that owns cygsqlite3-0.dll remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 7: Do not use Device Manager or regsvr32
Device Manager repairs hardware drivers, not Cygwin runtime libraries. Updating a display, chipset or storage driver will not normally restore cygsqlite3-0.dll.
If you are also troubleshooting unrelated hardware failures, open Device Manager by right-clicking Start, select Device Manager, expand the relevant device category, right-click the device and choose Update driver. That is separate from this DLL problem.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware entries and comparing driver versions; its free scan identifies reported issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional and unrelated to the definitive Cygwin package repair.
Do not run:
regsvr32 cygsqlite3-0.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, usually ActiveX or COM components. This Cygwin SQLite runtime is a library, not a registration server. The command may report that the entry point was not found, and it will not repair the missing dependency.
What not to do
- Do not copy the file into
System32. - Do not copy it into
SysWOW64merely because Windows is 64-bit. - Do not place one DLL in every application folder.
- Do not rename
sqlite3.dll,libsqlite3-0.dllormsys-sqlite3-0.dll. - Do not install a second Cygwin copy just to obtain one file unless you are deliberately replacing the original.
- Do not rely on a file’s Windows Explorer version metadata to determine package authenticity.
- Do not use Windows System Restore as the first repair method.
FAQ
Is cygsqlite3-0.dll a Windows file?
No. It belongs to Cygwin or to a Windows application that bundles a private Cygwin runtime.
Where should the file be?
Usually in the bin directory of the relevant installation, such as:
C:cygwin64bin
A bundled application may use a different private directory.
Which package installs it?
Cygwin’s SQLite runtime package is libsqlite3_0. The sqlite3 package depends on that runtime.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I download the DLL separately?
That is unsafe and usually ineffective. A downloaded file may be malicious, damaged, built for the wrong architecture or missing the other Cygwin libraries the program requires.
Why did the error appear after an update?
Common causes include an interrupted Cygwin update, antivirus quarantine, a moved or deleted installation, an application uninstall, a restored disk image or mixed 32-bit and 64-bit files.
Will Visual C++, DirectX or .NET repair it?
Normally no. Those installers do not supply the Cygwin SQLite runtime.
What information should I collect if repair fails?
Record the complete error text, the full path of the requesting executable, the Cygwin root, whether the caller is 32-bit or 64-bit, the affected application version and any additional missing-DLL messages. This distinguishes a missing SQLite package from a damaged application or private runtime.
