d3d10level9.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, not an arbitrary game DLL. If Windows or an application says d3d10level9.dll is missing, damaged, or could not be loaded, repair the Windows component or the affected application instead of downloading a replacement from an untrusted DLL site.
The file is part of the Windows Direct3D runtime. Its embedded description is “Direct3D 10 to Direct3D9 Translation Runtime,” and it helps software use Direct3D 10-style functionality through lower Direct3D feature-level paths. Microsoft describes these 10Level9 paths as Direct3D 10-style functionality running on hardware that supports lower feature levels, including 9.1, 9.2, and 9.3. Microsoft’s Direct3D feature-level documentation explains the relationship.

The correct repair depends on three details:
- The exact error message.
- The path shown in the message.
- Whether every program fails or only one game or application.
If the error points to a Windows folder and affects multiple programs, start with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. If it points to a game or application folder and only that program fails, repair or verify the application first.

The file is a Windows graphics-runtime component. It provides a compatibility path between Direct3D 10-style application behavior and lower Direct3D feature levels. Older or compatibility-focused programs may use that path when they initialize graphics.
That explains why the file can appear in errors from games, legacy Microsoft software, media applications, or programs built with older graphics frameworks. It may also appear as the faulting module in a crash report even when the actual cause is a graphics driver, overlay, hardware problem, or application bug.
The file is not normally installed by:
- Visual C++ Redistributable.
- .NET Framework.
- The DirectX June 2010 redistributable.
- A game launcher.
- A graphics-card driver package.
Windows owns and services the core Direct3D runtime. Microsoft states that the core DirectX runtime is part of Windows. The legacy DirectX packages install optional side-by-side components such as D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX, but they do not replace the DirectX runtime already installed in Windows. See Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer and DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 documentation.
Check the error before changing anything
Before running repairs, record what Windows actually says. The wording often identifies the correct branch.
Common messages include:
The program can't start because d3d10level9.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
Older software may show:
This application has failed to start because d3d10level9.dll was not found.
A bad-image message may look like this:
C:\Windows\System32\D3D10Level9.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
You may also see:
The procedure entry point ... could not be located in d3d10level9.dll.
A message stating that the specified module could not be found does not always mean that d3d10level9.dll itself is absent. A dependency required by the DLL may be missing or incompatible.
Also note the path:
C:\Windows\System32\d3d10level9.dllC:\Windows\SysWOW64\d3d10level9.dll- A game or application folder
- A temporary folder or another unexpected location
On 64-bit Windows, the names are counterintuitive:
%windir%\System32normally contains 64-bit system files.%windir%\SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.
Microsoft documents this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation means every program should use the 64-bit copy. A 32-bit application normally needs the 32-bit runtime path.

Microsoft’s Windows Update installation guidance covers the normal update process.
How to tell whether this worked
The fix worked if the application starts normally and no longer reports d3d10level9.dll. It is also a good sign if other programs that previously failed now launch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows Update reports that the system is current but the DLL error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not move directly to a downloaded DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, followed by a restart.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC uses that repaired source to check protected system files and replace damaged copies. Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC when Windows system files or components are missing or corrupted. See Microsoft’s System File Checker repair procedure.
Run DISM from an elevated Terminal
- Open Start.
- Type
Terminal. - Right-click Windows Terminal.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish.
The process can remain at one percentage for a while. Do not close the window simply because progress appears to pause.

If repeated DISM and SFC runs leave you guessing which component is still damaged, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it finds; the repair is performed by the full version, and it is optional.
Check one specific copy with SFC
If you need to inspect one known Windows path, Microsoft supports the /scanfile option.
For the 64-bit system copy on 64-bit Windows:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%\System32\d3d10level9.dll
For the 32-bit system copy on 64-bit Windows:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%\SysWOW64\d3d10level9.dll
Run the command only for a path that exists on the computer. A missing path can produce an error that does not diagnose the wider Windows installation.
After a targeted repair, restart Windows and launch the program again.
If DISM says the source files cannot be found
DISM may be unable to repair Windows if the component store is damaged and Windows cannot obtain the required source files.
At that point:
- Note the exact DISM error.
- Confirm that Windows Update is working.
- Make sure the repair source matches the installed Windows edition, architecture, and release.
- Use matching Windows installation media or another documented repair source.
- Run DISM with the appropriate
/Sourceand/LimitAccessparameters. - Run
sfc /scannowagain after DISM completes. - Restart and retest.
Do not guess at a source path or point DISM to an unrelated Windows installation. A mismatched source can fail to repair the component.

If the component store remains damaged, use System Restore, an in-place Windows repair, or another recovery option after backing up important data. Microsoft outlines the choices in its Windows recovery options.
Fix 3: Repair or verify the affected application
Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes.
Use this fix when:
- Only one game or application fails.
- The error points to the program’s own folder.
- The Windows copies are present and healthy.
- The problem began after an application update, interrupted installation, restore from backup, or move to another drive.
An application can ship with its own DLL beside the executable. Because Windows searches the application directory before the standard system directories in the normal DLL search order, that local file can override the Windows copy. Microsoft documents the behavior in its DLL search-order documentation.
Repair a Windows application
For many Windows 11 applications:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not solve the problem, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
For traditional desktop software:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Choose Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the application.
Verify a Steam game
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch the game again.
Verification replaces missing or altered files belonging to that game. It does not repair a damaged Windows copy in System32 or SysWOW64.
Verify an Epic Games game
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game.
- Click the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Start the game again.
If the launcher reports that files were repaired but the error remains, continue with Windows servicing and graphics-driver checks.
Inspect the application folder
If the error is a bad-image error or includes 0xc000007b, inspect the folder containing the program executable.
Look for a local copy named:
d3d10level9.dll
Do not delete it immediately. If it is untrusted or clearly associated with the failed update, rename it to something like:
d3d10level9.dll.old
Renaming preserves the file for diagnosis and allows the application repair process to restore the correct version. If the application vendor explicitly requires a private local copy, follow that vendor’s documented instructions instead.
A 32-bit application must not receive a 64-bit DLL copied beside it, and a 64-bit application must not receive a 32-bit replacement. A matching filename alone does not make a DLL compatible.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Use this branch if the problem began after Microsoft Defender or another security product scanned the computer.
Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection involving d3d10level9.dll or the affected application.
- Check the path, detection details, and source.
- Run a full scan if the detection is unclear.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again unless the item is explicitly allowed. Allow a file only when its location, publisher, signature, and origin are trusted. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
For a copy that belongs in a Windows system directory, repairing it with DISM and SFC is safer than restoring an uncertain file manually.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Protection History retains events for a limited period. If the event is older and no longer appears, check the security product’s own logs and continue with Windows servicing.
When quarantine is probably not the whole explanation
If the file exists in the correct Windows directory, has a valid Microsoft signature, and several applications crash, the issue may be component corruption or a driver problem rather than quarantine.
If a newly restored application-local file immediately triggers another detection, stop launching the program and investigate the application installation before adding an exclusion.
Fix 5: Check the display driver
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A crash report naming d3d10level9.dll does not prove that the DLL is broken. The file may simply be the graphics module active when an application encountered a driver, GPU, overlay, or initialization failure.

Look at this branch when:
- The file exists and SFC reports no corruption.
- The program crashes while opening a 3D scene.
- Event Viewer names a display driver,
d3d11.dll, ordxgi.dll. - The issue began after a graphics-driver update.
- Only one GPU or hardware configuration has the problem.
- The message refers to minimum graphics requirements rather than a missing file.
Update the driver through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install the offered driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Microsoft documents this process in its driver update and reinstall guidance.
Reinstall the display device
If the issue started after a driver update or the driver appears corrupted:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver supplied for the computer or graphics device.
- Restart again.
- Test the affected program.
A driver reinstall addresses the graphics stack around the Windows Direct3D runtime. It does not normally replace d3d10level9.dll.
Manually hunting through several driver versions can be time-consuming when the wrong component is causing the failure. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the system and identify driver problems; driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is optional.
Check overlays and graphics utilities
If the program crashes only during graphics initialization, temporarily disable overlays and capture utilities supplied by launchers, recording software, or GPU utilities. Also test without overclocking or custom GPU profiles.
This step is diagnostic. If disabling an overlay stops the crash, update or remove that overlay rather than replacing a Windows DLL.
Fix 6: Confirm the file architecture and location
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
On 64-bit Windows, check both expected locations:
%windir%\System32\d3d10level9.dll
%windir%\SysWOW64\d3d10level9.dll
Open File Explorer, click the address bar, enter each path, and press Enter.
Do not infer architecture from the folder name alone. System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit compatibility.
The affected program’s architecture matters:
- A 32-bit program generally uses the 32-bit Windows runtime path.
- A 64-bit program generally uses the 64-bit Windows runtime path.
- A 32-bit program cannot use a 64-bit DLL simply because the operating system is 64-bit.
If you need to inspect file properties:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Review the file description, product name, version, and other metadata.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Inspect the signer details.
The description should identify the Direct3D 10 to Direct3D9 Translation Runtime, and the product should identify Microsoft Windows. Version and size vary by Windows release, architecture, and servicing level, so do not treat one file size or version as universal.
Examples documented across Windows generations include different 32-bit and 64-bit builds. A Windows 8.1 update table lists an x86 build with version 6.3.9600.16421 and a size of 578,952 bytes, while other Windows generations have different builds. Microsoft update documentation also lists separate architecture-specific files for older Windows releases.
Fix 7: Use the legacy DirectX package only for the right errors
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes.
The DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer and the June 2010 redistributable are useful for older side-by-side DirectX components. They are not the normal repair for a missing Windows copy of d3d10level9.dll.
Use the official DirectX Web Installer when the error names legacy files such as:
d3dx9_*.dlld3dx10_*.dlld3dx11_*.dllxinput1_3.dllxaudio2_7.dll- Other optional DirectX SDK components
The DirectX June 2010 redistributable installs optional side-by-side components. It does not modify the Windows Direct3D runtime already installed in Windows.
If you install it for a separate missing dependency:
- Download it only from Microsoft.
- Run the installer.
- Follow the setup instructions.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application again.
If the only error is d3d10level9.dll in System32 or SysWOW64, return to DISM and SFC. Reinstalling legacy DirectX repeatedly is unlikely to repair that Windows component.
Fix 8: Repair Visual C++ or .NET only when the error names them
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes.
Visual C++ Redistributable and .NET are common troubleshooting suggestions, but neither is a general repair for d3d10level9.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Visual C++ Redistributable
Use Visual C++ repair if the same error also names files such as:
MSVCP*.dll
VCRUNTIME*.dll
Download the supported packages from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
The architecture must match the application:
- A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows.
- A 64-bit application generally needs the x64 package.
- ARM64 software may require the ARM64 package.
To repair an installed package:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Open the menu beside the relevant package.
- Choose Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Do not expect Visual C++ repair to replace d3d10level9.dll.
.NET Framework
Use Microsoft’s .NET Framework repair guidance when the application reports a .NET installation problem, a managed-runtime exception, or a missing .NET component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A .NET repair does not normally restore the Windows Direct3D runtime. If the error names only d3d10level9.dll, use Windows servicing instead.
Fix 9: Check Windows Features only for a related component
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Windows Features are not a normal way to install d3d10level9.dll. Do not enable random features hoping that one will recreate the file.

Windows Features can matter if the application also reports a separate optional Windows component. To inspect them:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the listed components.
- Enable only the feature required by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
For example, an older application may separately require a .NET Framework feature. That is a different dependency from d3d10level9.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
If enabling a feature does not change the DLL error, do not keep toggling features. Use the path and scope of the original error to choose between Windows repair, application repair, or driver diagnosis.
Fix 10: Address older Windows compatibility cases
Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours.
Older software can fail after an operating-system update even when the Windows DLL is intact. The issue may involve an outdated graphics path, older hardware, or assumptions made by the application.
Examples documented in Microsoft discussions include:
- Windows Live Messenger producing a bad-image error involving
System32\D3D10Level9.dllon Windows Vista. - Windows Live Mail displaying problems after a Windows 10 feature update, particularly on older Intel graphics hardware.
- Windows Live Movie Maker encountering a related Direct3D compatibility problem on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 with DirectX 9-only graphics hardware.
These examples do not prove that every failure involving those programs is a missing-DLL problem.

Time needed: None.
Do not try to register d3d10level9.dll with regsvr32.
regsvr32.exe is used for DLLs or ActiveX controls that implement registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft explains that Regsvr32 reports an error when the requested entry point is absent. See Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.

regsvr32 d3d10level9.dll
commonly produces an error similar to:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean the DLL needs registration. It means the command is the wrong repair mechanism.
Do not use:
regsvr32 /u d3d10level9.dll
Unregistering the file does not repair it and may create additional confusion. Use DISM, SFC, application repair, driver repair, or Windows recovery instead.
Do not download a replacement DLL
Downloading d3d10level9.dll from a random DLL website is risky and often fails to fix the real cause.
A downloaded file may have:
- The wrong architecture.
- The wrong Windows build.
- Incompatible dependencies.
- A missing or invalid digital signature.
- Tampered contents.
- Malware.
- A version that conflicts with Windows servicing.
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create a mismatch that later interferes with SFC, DISM, or Windows Update.
Use these safer sources instead:
- Windows Update.
- DISM and SFC.
- The application’s official repair or reinstall process.
- Steam or Epic file verification.
- The computer or GPU manufacturer’s official driver package.
- Microsoft’s official DirectX packages only when the error names an optional legacy component.
The fact that a file has the correct name does not make it trustworthy or compatible.
When an application-local copy can be acceptable
An application-local copy can be valid in a narrow situation, but it is not the normal fix for a Windows system DLL.
Consider it only when all of these conditions apply:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- The application vendor explicitly requires the private copy.
- The file comes from the vendor or a trusted official installer.
- The architecture matches the application.
- The Windows build and application compatibility requirements are known.
- The file’s provenance and digital signature can be verified.
- The copy is placed beside the application, not blindly in a Windows system directory.
Preserve any existing file before replacing it. Rename it rather than deleting it, and repair or reinstall the application so its installer can supply the intended version.
An application-local copy can override the Windows copy because the application directory is searched early in the normal DLL search order. That can solve a narrowly documented compatibility issue, but it can also create a bad-image or entry-point error when the wrong build is used.
What to do when the file exists but Windows still reports an error
A file can exist and still fail to load.
Work through these checks:
- Read the complete error, including its path.
- Check whether the error names another DLL.
- Inspect both Windows paths on 64-bit Windows.
- Check for an application-local duplicate.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Confirm the file’s digital signature.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Review Event Viewer for display-driver or dependency errors.
- Verify the application files.
- Update or reinstall the display driver.
“Specified module could not be found” can indicate a missing dependency. Replacing d3d10level9.dll alone will not repair the dependency chain.

An entry-point error usually indicates an incompatible DLL or dependency. It does not normally indicate that the file needs COM registration.

It should prompt checks of architecture, signature, application-local duplicates, SFC results, and related files. It should not automatically be treated as malware, but an unknown replacement should not be trusted without investigation.
When the DLL appears as the faulting module
Crash logs identify where an exception surfaced, not necessarily what caused it.
If d3d10level9.dll appears as the faulting module and the file is present and healthy, investigate:
- Display-driver updates or rollbacks.
- GPU hardware instability.
- Graphics overlays.
- Application patches.
- Direct3D initialization.
- Other modules named in the crash report.
- Whether the crash occurs only on one graphics device.
A crash involving the DLL is different from a loader message saying the file is missing. Do not replace a healthy Windows file solely because its name appears in a crash log.

If DISM cannot find repair files and SFC continues to report corruption:
- Back up important files.
- Record the exact DISM and SFC messages.
- Confirm that the repair source matches the installed Windows release and architecture.
- Retry with documented
/Sourceand/LimitAccessparameters. - Use System Restore if the issue follows a recent change.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair.
- Use Reset or reinstall only after reviewing the recovery consequences.
Microsoft’s Windows recovery options distinguish between System Restore, Reset, and reinstalling Windows.
If corruption returns after every restart, investigate malware, disk errors, and storage hardware. Back up data before performing deeper repairs.
Likely causes and the correct repair
| Clue | Most likely area | Correct next step |
|---|---|---|
Multiple applications fail and the path is in Windows\System32 |
Windows component damage | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
A 32-bit program fails and the path is SysWOW64 |
32-bit runtime copy or application dependency | Check the 32-bit path, then repair Windows or the application |
| Only one game fails and the path is its folder | Incomplete or incompatible game files | Verify or reinstall the game |
| Error begins after antivirus quarantine | File removed or blocked | Review Protection History and repair the trusted source |
| Crash occurs during graphics startup | Driver, overlay, GPU, or application fault | Update or reinstall the display driver and test without overlays |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” appears | Bad image, wrong architecture, or incompatible local copy | Check signature, architecture, local duplicates, DISM, and SFC |
| DirectX installer changes nothing | Wrong package for the missing file | Use Windows servicing for d3d10level9.dll |
| Visual C++ files are also missing | C/C++ runtime dependency | Repair the matching Visual C++ Redistributable |
| The program is very old and fails after an update | Compatibility regression | Update, repair, use System Restore, or follow vendor guidance |
Frequently asked questions
Is d3d10level9.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component named “Direct3D 10 to Direct3D9 Translation Runtime.” A file with that name in an unexpected application folder is not automatically genuine. Check its location, metadata, digital signature, and source.
Is d3d10level9.dll part of DirectX?
It belongs to the Windows Direct3D runtime, which is part of Windows. The legacy DirectX redistributables install optional side-by-side components and do not normally replace this Windows file.
Should I install DirectX to fix it?
Not as the first response to a d3d10level9.dll error. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC when the error points to a Windows directory. Install the legacy DirectX package when the error separately names optional files such as d3dx9_*.dll, xinput1_3.dll, or xaudio2_7.dll.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the error also names Visual C++ runtime files such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. Visual C++ does not normally repair d3d10level9.dll.
Should I install .NET?
Only for a .NET-specific error. .NET repair is not a normal solution for a missing Windows Direct3D runtime file.
Recommended Free Tools
Is d3d10level9.dll a graphics-driver file?
It is a Windows graphics-runtime component, not normally a vendor-specific driver file. A driver can still cause an application to crash while using it.
Where should the file be on 64-bit Windows?
The normal locations are:
%windir%\System32\d3d10level9.dll
%windir%\SysWOW64\d3d10level9.dll
System32 normally contains the 64-bit copy, while SysWOW64 normally contains the 32-bit copy.
Can I copy the file from another computer?
Do not do this as a general repair. Windows builds, architectures, servicing branches, signatures, and dependencies can differ. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
No. d3d10level9.dll is not normally a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Regsvr32 does not repair the Direct3D runtime.

What if only one game reports the error?
Verify the game files, use its Repair option if available, and reinstall it from the official launcher or publisher. If the Windows copies are healthy, an application repair is more likely to help than Windows component repair.
What if the file is listed as the faulting module in a crash?
Treat that as a crash diagnosis, not proof that the file is missing. Check graphics drivers, overlays, GPU stability, application updates, and related event-log entries.
What if Windows Live Mail or another old program is affected?
Older software may have compatibility problems after Windows updates or graphics-driver changes. Repair the application, update the driver, and check the publisher’s compatibility guidance. Do not copy a random DLL into the application folder unless the vendor explicitly documents that procedure.
What is the safest overall repair order?
Use this order:
- Record the exact error and path.
- Install Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM.
- Run SFC.
- Repair or verify the affected application.
- Check antivirus quarantine.
- Update or reinstall the display driver.
- Use legacy DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET only when the error names a component they actually provide.
- Use System Restore or Windows recovery if servicing cannot repair the component.
For a Windows-directory copy, the normal destination is Windows servicing, not a standalone downloaded DLL.
