USB is the easiest way to connect an Xbox controller to a PC. Use a USB data cable for an immediate, reliable connection. For wireless play, use Bluetooth if both the controller and PC support it. Xbox Wireless is a separate connection method that requires a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter.
Before troubleshooting, identify your controller generation: Bluetooth is available on current Xbox Wireless Controllers and some Xbox One revisions, but not every Xbox controller supports it.

Before you start
- An Xbox controller with working batteries or sufficient charge
- A Windows PC—these instructions prioritize Windows 11
- A compatible data-capable USB cable
- Bluetooth hardware in the PC if you want wireless Bluetooth play
- A compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter if you want Xbox Wireless
Current Xbox Wireless Controllers, including Xbox Series X|S controllers, support Windows through USB-C and Bluetooth. The current model was released on November 10, 2020. Check the controller’s model or physical connector rather than assuming that every Xbox controller has Bluetooth. Microsoft’s controller specifications list Windows compatibility and connection details.
Xbox One controllers vary by revision. Some older models do not include Bluetooth and must use USB or Xbox Wireless. Xbox Elite Wireless Controller models can connect through supported wired or wireless methods, while Xbox 360 controllers have different requirements: a wired Xbox 360 controller can use its USB connection, but a wireless Xbox 360 controller requires a compatible wireless receiver. It cannot pair through ordinary Bluetooth.

Method 1: Connect the controller with USB
USB is the best first choice if you simply want the controller to work. It avoids pairing, has no Bluetooth interference, and is the safest connection for firmware updates and controller configuration.
- Turn on the PC.
- Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible USB data cable. Current Xbox controllers use USB-C; older controllers may use a different connector.
- Press the Xbox button if the controller does not turn on automatically.
- Wait while Windows recognizes the device and installs any required driver.
- Open a controller-compatible game or test the controller using
joy.cpl.
The Xbox button should remain lit, and compatible games will generally identify the controller as an Xbox or XInput controller without additional mapping software.
Important: a charge-only cable can power the controller without transmitting data. If Windows does not recognize it, try another cable known to support data transfer and another USB port. On a desktop, test both a rear motherboard port and a front-panel port.

USB is also the preferred fallback when Xbox Accessories cannot find the controller or when a wireless connection is unstable. See the official controller specifications for Microsoft’s USB-C and Windows compatibility information.
Method 2: Connect over Bluetooth in Windows 11
Bluetooth is convenient for laptops and desktops that have built-in Bluetooth. It requires both a Bluetooth-capable controller and Bluetooth hardware in the PC.
- Press the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
- Press and hold the controller’s Pair button for about three seconds.
- Release it when the Xbox button begins flashing.
- On the PC, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose Xbox Wireless Controller when it appears.
- Wait for Windows to report that the controller is connected.
These are Microsoft’s current Windows pairing steps. The Microsoft Windows guide also explains the controller pairing process.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the controller does not appear
- Turn Bluetooth off and on again, then repeat pairing mode.
- Make sure Airplane mode is off.
- Remove an old Xbox controller entry from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, then pair again.
- Keep the controller close to the PC while pairing.
- Move it away from poorly shielded USB 3.0 devices, which can interfere with Bluetooth.
- In Windows 11, try Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Bluetooth devices discovery > Advanced.
If Bluetooth is missing entirely, the PC may not have Bluetooth hardware, or its adapter may be disabled or missing a driver. Check the PC specifications and Device Manager. In Device Manager > Bluetooth, right-click the adapter and choose Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software. You can also use Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Bluetooth > Run. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide covers these steps.

For a desktop without Bluetooth, use a Windows-compatible USB Bluetooth adapter, a USB cable, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter.
Method 3: Connect with Xbox Wireless
Xbox Wireless is not the same as Bluetooth. It uses Microsoft’s dedicated wireless protocol and requires a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter connected to the PC. Do not assume that a PC’s Bluetooth hardware can use Xbox Wireless.
- Connect the compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter to the PC.
- Allow Windows to install or recognize its driver.
- Turn on the controller.
- Press the controller’s Pair button.
- Press the Pair button on the adapter.
- Wait until the Xbox button remains lit.
Microsoft’s older adapter documentation describes a typical range of approximately six meters, but real-world performance depends on the PC, obstacles, interference, and adapter placement. Adapter availability, pricing, and third-party compatibility can change, so verify those details before buying. Microsoft’s adapter documentation explains the intended receiver setup.
If Windows does not recognize the adapter, run Windows Update and check the PC or adapter manufacturer’s driver support. Avoid assuming that an inexpensive third-party device has the same firmware or compatibility as Microsoft’s hardware.

Confirm that Windows sees the controller
Pairing or plugging in the controller is not the same as confirming that games can use it.
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the Xbox controller.
- Choose Properties.
- Test the buttons, triggers, sticks, and vibration where available.
The exact test interface can vary by Windows build. You can also launch a game known to support Xbox controllers. If input works in joy.cpl but not in one game, the connection is probably working and the problem is more likely the game’s controller support or configuration.
Update controller firmware
Firmware updates can improve compatibility and resolve some pairing problems, although they will not fix every Bluetooth or game-specific issue.

- Connect the controller to the PC with a compatible USB data cable, or use a compatible Xbox Wireless connection.
- Install or open the official Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store.
- Select the controller.
- Choose the available firmware-update option, if shown.
- Keep the cable connected and do not turn off the PC during the update.
- Restart or reconnect the controller afterward.
Bluetooth may be sufficient for ordinary play, but USB is the safest way to make the controller appear in Xbox Accessories and to complete configuration tasks such as button mapping. Do not rely on a charge-only cable.

Fix common connection problems
The controller connects to the console instead
Turn off the console or move away from it, then put the controller into pairing mode by holding its Pair button until the Xbox button flashes. Select it from the PC’s Bluetooth device list. A controller can remember multiple devices, so starting the pairing process deliberately helps prevent it from reconnecting to the wrong one.
Bluetooth pairing fails or keeps disconnecting
- Connect the controller by USB and update its firmware through Xbox Accessories.
- Update the PC’s Bluetooth driver from Device Manager or the PC manufacturer’s support page.
- Remove the old Bluetooth entry and pair again.
- Reduce distance and possible USB 3.0 interference.
- Test with USB. If USB works consistently, the problem is wireless rather than the controller’s basic input hardware.
Xbox Accessories cannot find the controller
Use a known-good USB data cable, not a charging-only cable. Try another USB port, close and reopen Xbox Accessories, and reconnect the controller. If necessary, update Windows and restart the PC before trying again.
Windows sees the controller, but the game does not
- Verify the buttons and sticks in
joy.cpl. - Close and relaunch the game.
- Connect the controller before starting the game.
- Check the game’s controller settings and whether it supports Xbox or XInput controllers.
- If you use Steam, test with Steam Input enabled and disabled; different games can behave better with different settings.
- Disconnect other controllers and close remapping utilities that may create duplicate devices.
- Update the controller firmware.
- Try USB to separate a game configuration problem from a wireless problem.
Do not install generic controller-emulation software as the first solution. It can create duplicate devices, input conflicts, anti-cheat problems, or incorrect button prompts. If a game shows PlayStation-style prompts while the Xbox controller works, that is usually a game configuration or prompt issue rather than a failed connection.

I have an Xbox 360 controller
A wired Xbox 360 controller can connect through its USB cable. A wireless Xbox 360 controller does not use ordinary Bluetooth; it needs a compatible Xbox 360 wireless receiver. Identify the exact controller and receiver before buying hardware.
Headset features do not work
Do not assume that headset behavior is identical over Bluetooth, USB, and Xbox Wireless. Accessory support can depend on both the controller model and the connection method. Check the documentation for the specific controller if audio is important.
Quick Recap
Which connection method should you use?
| Method | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| USB | Immediate setup, troubleshooting, firmware updates | The cable limits movement; charge-only cables do not work for data |
| Bluetooth | Cable-free laptop or desktop play | Requires Bluetooth support and can be affected by drivers or interference |
| Xbox Wireless | A dedicated wireless setup or unreliable Bluetooth | Requires a compatible receiver whose current availability should be checked |
- Just want to play: use USB.
