What d3dcompiler_46.dll does
d3dcompiler_46.dll is part of the Direct3D HLSL compiler family. HLSL is Microsoft’s High-Level Shader Language, used by graphics applications to describe shaders for lighting, materials, effects, and other GPU operations.
#1 Best Overall
- Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.

- Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
- Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
The DLL provides the D3DCompile family of APIs, which compile HLSL source code into shader bytecode that a Direct3D application can use. Microsoft documents the main API in its D3DCompile reference.
This makes the file different from several components that are often confused with it:
- It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file.
- It is not a .NET Framework file.
- It is not a graphics-card driver.
- It is not normally a Windows-protected system DLL.
- It is not automatically installed into every application by having DirectX 12 available.
- It is not interchangeable with
d3dcompiler_43.dllord3dcompiler_47.dll.
Older games and Direct3D desktop applications commonly ship a compiler DLL beside their own executable. The application may need a particular filename and build because its launcher or executable was designed around that copy.
Where does it come from
Microsoft associates d3dcompiler_46.dll with the Windows SDK and application-local Direct3D redistribution. The SDK documentation lists copies under paths such as:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Kits\8.0\Redist\D3D\x86
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Kits\8.0\Redist\D3D\x64
Those paths are mainly relevant to developers packaging applications. They are not a recommendation for ordinary users to install the Windows SDK to repair a game.
Microsoft specifically describes the SDK copies of D3DCOMPILER_46.DLL and D3DCOMPILER_47.DLL as application-local files rather than Windows system components. The DirectX SDK deployment documentation also warns against copying them into System32 or SysWOW64.
Games and applications can bundle different Microsoft builds. Examples recorded in Microsoft file inventories include:
| Architecture | Example version | Approximate size |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit | 9.30.9200.20789 |
3.08 MB |
| 64-bit | 9.30.9200.20546 |
3.69 MB |
| 32-bit | 9.30.960.9200 |
3.08 MB |
| 32-bit | 9.30.960.8512 |
3.08 MB |
These are examples, not universal requirements. There is no single version, size, or hash that is correct for every program. Some vendors also duplicate or rename related files.
Where the DLL should be located
For a normal desktop application, the correct copy is generally beside the executable that loads it, or in another application-controlled deployment directory. Windows searches the application directory before standard system locations for ordinary desktop applications. Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation on DLL search order.
Do not copy this file into:
C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
Those folders are not interchangeable storage locations for every DirectX DLL. System32 on 64-bit Windows is associated with native 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit compatibility components. Putting a game DLL into either folder can create confusion and can allow the wrong program to load the wrong copy.
The application’s architecture matters more than the architecture of Windows:
- A 32-bit game needs the x86 DLL, even when Windows is 64-bit.
- A native 64-bit game needs the x64 DLL.
- A file named
d3dcompiler_46_64.dllmay be a vendor-specific copy or alias. It is not automatically equivalent to the exact filenamed3dcompiler_46.dll. - Renaming a 32-bit file to look like a 64-bit file does not change its architecture.
- Renaming
_46to_47does not make the file compatible with an application requesting_46.
A folder named Program Files (x86) can suggest that an application is 32-bit, but it is not a perfect architecture test. Use the game’s documentation, launcher package, or the original installer when determining which copy belongs there.
Fix 1: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a game’s DLL after an update, mod installation, or false-positive detection. This is especially worth checking when the file was present previously and disappeared without you manually deleting it.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries involving the affected game or application.
- Open the relevant entry and read the detected path and action.
If the file came from the official application installer and you can verify that source, use the available action to restore it. Windows Security may then require a separate Allow on device action if you are confident the detection is incorrect. Microsoft explains the behavior in its Protection History guidance.
Do not disable antivirus globally just to install a DLL from a download site. If the application is legitimate, repair or verify its files after handling the quarantine entry. That lets the official launcher restore the correct copy and gives antivirus another opportunity to inspect it.

Fix 2: Verify the affected game or application
When only one game fails, repairing that game is the highest-priority fix. The launcher can compare installed files with the files expected for that release and download the correct architecture and version.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Steam may replace missing or damaged files, including an application-local Direct3D compiler DLL. It may also report that some files were reacquired or restored.
If verification completes but the error remains, restart Windows and run verification again. Then inspect the game’s Redist or _CommonRedist folder for official prerequisite installers supplied with that game.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the verification process to complete.
- Launch the game again.
Rockstar Games Launcher
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Open Settings.
- Select the affected game.
- Select Verify Integrity.
- Wait for the launcher to finish.
- Start the game again.
GOG Galaxy and other launchers
Open the game’s management menu and use the launcher’s built-in Verify, Repair, or Check files function if available. The exact wording can vary between launcher versions.
For an independently installed desktop application, use its official installer or repair option. On Windows 11, some applications expose repair controls under:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Open its menu.
- Select Advanced options if present.
- Select Repair.
This option is not available for every traditional desktop program. If it is missing, use the application’s official installer and choose Repair when offered.
How to tell whether verification worked
The repair worked if:
- The launcher reports that verification completed successfully.
- The missing DLL reappears in the application’s installation folder.
- The original error no longer appears.
- The game reaches its menu or begins loading normally.
If the DLL returns and then disappears again, check antivirus protection history. If it never returns, the launcher may be using a different executable, the installation may be incomplete, or the application package itself may not contain the required file.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 3: Run the application’s bundled prerequisite installers
Some games include secondary installers in a folder named Redist, _CommonRedist, Support, or something similar. These packages may install legacy DirectX components, Visual C++ runtimes, or other dependencies.
After verifying the game files:
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Look for
Redist,_CommonRedist,Support, orInstallers. - Open the DirectX or Visual C++ subfolder.
- Run the installer supplied with that specific game.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the game again.
This is useful when a launcher update or canceled prerequisite installer left the game incomplete. It does not mean every installer in the folder should be run repeatedly. Use the package that matches the error or the game’s documented requirements.
A bundled installer remains preferable to copying a DLL from another game. It is more likely to provide the correct architecture, supporting files, and release-specific version.
Fix 4: Install legacy DirectX components when the error names them
Windows 10 and Windows 11 include modern DirectX components, but many older games still depend on optional side-by-side files from the legacy DirectX runtime.
Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 package is named:
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe
Microsoft also provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, whose installer is commonly named:
dxwebsetup.exe
These packages can install legacy components such as D3DX, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and related DirectX files. They do not replace the DirectX version built into Windows.
Use this path when the error also mentions files such as:

- Choose a temporary extraction folder when prompted.
- Open that folder.
- Run
DXSETUP.exe. - Approve the administrator prompt.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected game.
The June 2010 package should not be described as a guaranteed installer for the application-local d3dcompiler_46.dll. Microsoft’s deployment documentation places the _46 compiler in the application-local redistribution model, so repairing the game remains the primary fix when that exact filename is missing.
Do not install the old Windows SDK merely because its documentation lists the DLL. The SDK is a developer resource, and archived SDK installers may be unserviced.
Fix 5: Repair Visual C++ only when its runtime is also involved
A game can require both d3dcompiler_46.dll and a Visual C++ runtime. Repairing Visual C++ can solve a launch failure caused by a separate missing runtime, but Visual C++ is not the source package for this DLL.
Start with the installer supplied by the game:
- Open the game’s installation directory.
- Look for a Visual C++ installer under
Redistor_CommonRedist. - Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if the option appears.
- Repeat for the architecture required by the game.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the game does not include the required package, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Recommended Free Tools
On 64-bit Windows, both x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages may be needed for different applications. Install the architecture that matches the application, not only the architecture of Windows.
Visual C++ repair is more relevant when the error names a VCRUNTIME, MSVCP, or similar file. It should not replace game verification for a missing d3dcompiler_46.dll.
Fix 6: Repair .NET only when the application identifies .NET
.NET is another separate dependency. A .NET repair cannot restore an application-local Direct3D compiler DLL, but it may resolve a launch failure when the error specifically names a .NET Framework component.
To inspect optional Windows features:
- Press
Win + R. - Type:
optionalfeatures.exe
- Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features dialog.
- If the application specifically requires .NET Framework 3.5, enable .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download or install the required components.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
Do not toggle random DirectX-related settings in Windows Features. There is no general Windows Feature that replaces every application-local Direct3D compiler DLL.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
System File Checker and DISM are useful when Windows itself appears damaged, but they are lower-priority fixes for this particular DLL because Microsoft documents d3dcompiler_46.dll as application-local.
Use them when:
- Several unrelated applications fail.
- Windows reports other missing or corrupted system files.
- Windows updates or repairs are failing.
- The problem affects files inside Windows system directories.
- The failure began after a broader system corruption event.
First open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends using DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
A successful repair may report that the restore operation completed or that Windows Resource Protection repaired corrupted files. Restart Windows and test the application.
If DISM and SFC complete successfully but one game still reports d3dcompiler_46.dll, that result points back toward the game installation, antivirus quarantine, architecture, or a missing dependency. SFC is not guaranteed to restore an application-local DLL.
Running DISM and SFC manually is useful, but repeating them while hunting through logs can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing file.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall the graphics driver for graphics-specific failures
A graphics driver is not the normal source of a missing d3dcompiler_46.dll, but driver work is appropriate when the actual symptoms involve graphics initialization rather than a missing application file.
Look for errors or behavior such as:
ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT- Device removed or device hung errors.
- A black screen during graphics initialization.
- Crashes immediately after a GPU driver update.
- Multiple Direct3D applications failing at the same time.
To check the driver through Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Follow any installation prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the same device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that option available.
Recommended Free Tools
For a clean reinstall:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the GPU.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to reinstall a driver or install the package supplied by the computer or graphics-card manufacturer.
Microsoft provides additional Device Manager driver guidance.
Manually checking hardware models, driver branches, and release pages can take time when several devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can provide a free scan showing which drivers are stale, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and a driver update will not replace the affected application’s own DLL.

Windows Update can help with system corruption, compatibility fixes, or driver problems. It should not be treated as the normal delivery mechanism for an application-local d3dcompiler_46.dll.
To check for updates:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
If the problem began immediately after a driver, application, or system change, System Restore may be appropriate.

What common error messages mean
“The program can’t start because d3dcompiler_46.dll is missing”
The file is absent from the application’s search path, or the application cannot access a required dependency. Verify the program files first.
“The code execution cannot proceed because d3dcompiler_46.dll was not found”
This usually means the requested filename was not found where the application expected it. A missing file is the obvious possibility, but the application may also be launching from a different directory than expected.
“There was a problem starting d3dcompiler_46.dll. The specified module could not be found”
The named DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Verify the application, run its bundled prerequisite installers, and check whether the file matches the application’s architecture.
“d3dcompiler_46.dll is either not designed to run on Windows” or error status 0xc000012f
This commonly indicates an invalid or corrupted image. Restore the application’s original copy through verification or reinstall rather than replacing it with a random download.
“The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)”
0xc000007b commonly points to an invalid image format, often involving an x86 and x64 mismatch. It is not exclusive to d3dcompiler_46.dll.
For example, a 32-bit application encountering an x64 copy can produce this type of failure. Other Visual C++, DirectX, or application files can also cause the same code, so do not assume that replacing one DLL will solve every 0xc000007b error.
Why regsvr32 does not apply
Do not run regsvr32 for this file.
regsvr32.exe is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The Direct3D compiler library exposes compiler functionality such as D3DCompile; it is not a COM or ActiveX registration DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The correct repair is to restore the application-local file through the application’s installer or launcher.
Do not download an isolated DLL from a random website
Downloading a single DLL from an unverified repository creates several risks:
The Tool Desk

- It may be corrupted or modified.
- It may have the right filename but still lack a required dependency.
- It may conceal a separate problem with the application installation.
- It may be copied into the wrong folder and create additional load-order problems.
Safe sources are:
- The affected game’s official launcher.
- The application’s official installer or repair package.
- A verified backup of that same application’s original file.
- Microsoft’s official DirectX runtime packages when the application also needs legacy DirectX components.
- Microsoft developer documentation and SDK redistribution files when you are deploying your own application.
Do not rename d3dcompiler_46.dll to d3dcompiler_47.dll, do not copy it from another game without verification, and do not add the game directory to the global PATH as a workaround.
Advanced cases
The file exists but Windows still says it is missing
Check these possibilities:
- A dependency of the DLL is missing.
- The DLL is the wrong architecture.
- The file is corrupted.
- The launcher starts a different executable than expected.
- Antivirus removes the file immediately after restoration.
- A mod or overlay replaced related graphics files.
- The application is installed in a different folder than the one you checked.
- The displayed error actually concerns another DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET dependency.
Start with file verification and antivirus history. If the file exists, avoid replacing it blindly. The next useful evidence is the exact executable path, launcher log, and complete error message.
The issue began after installing a mod or shader injector
Shader injectors and graphics mods can replace, intercept, or add Direct3D-related files. Restore a clean application directory:
- Disable or remove the mod according to its creator’s instructions.
- Remove only files identified by the mod’s documentation.
- Run the launcher’s verification process.
- Start the unmodified application.
- Reinstall the mod only after the original game works.
Do not try to repair a modded installation by mixing DLLs from other games.
Only one game fails
Prioritize:
- Launcher verification.
- Windows Security protection history.
- The game’s bundled prerequisite installers.
- A clean reinstall from the official source.
- The game publisher’s support channel.
Do not begin with registry cleaners, GPU driver replacement, or SFC unless other evidence points to a broader problem.
Several games fail
Prioritize:
- Check whether the games share a launcher or mod framework.
- Review antivirus history.
- Repair Visual C++ or .NET if those runtimes are also named.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver if graphics initialization is failing.
- Use System Restore if the failures began after a recent system change.
Several failures may indicate shared antivirus behavior, a common runtime, a driver, or system corruption. They do not automatically mean that every game needs the same DLL copied into its folder.
The error returns after every reinstall
Investigate:
- Antivirus quarantining the replacement.
- An installer being blocked or interrupted.
- Disk or file-system errors.
- An unofficial or modified application build.
- A launcher starting the wrong executable.
- A vendor installer that does not actually bundle the required DLL.
- Compatibility problems between the application and the current Windows installation.
If the official installer never supplies the file, contact the application vendor. Installing the Windows SDK as an end-user workaround is not a normal solution.
Frequently asked questions
Is d3dcompiler_46.dll a legitimate Microsoft file
Yes. Microsoft documents it as a Direct3D HLSL compiler DLL and provides application-local redistribution guidance. However, the filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Source and location still matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs it part of Windows
Not in the sense relevant to this repair. Windows includes core Direct3D components, but Microsoft documents the HLSL compiler DLL as an application-local redistributable rather than a normal system component.
Do I need DirectX 12
Having modern DirectX available does not prove that an older game has every optional legacy DirectX side-by-side file it needs. If the game also reports missing d3dx, xinput, or xapofx files, use Microsoft’s June 2010 DirectX runtime package or web installer. For the exact _46 file, repair the application first.
Should I place the DLL in System32
No. Restore it beside the executable that needs it. Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Should I use the 64-bit file because Windows is 64-bit
No. Match the DLL to the application. A 32-bit game needs the x86 version even on 64-bit Windows.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I use d3dcompiler_47.dll instead
Not automatically. The application may request the exact filename _46, and renaming another compiler DLL does not make it an equivalent dependency.
Is there one correct version or file size
No. Different applications may ship different Microsoft builds and architectures. Treat version and size information as a way to compare a known application copy, not as a universal download target.
Will repairing Visual C++ fix it
Only if Visual C++ is also damaged or missing and is contributing to the launch failure. Visual C++ is not the package that supplies d3dcompiler_46.dll.
Will SFC restore the file
Usually not when the missing file belongs to one game or desktop application. SFC and DISM repair Windows components. Use them when several applications or Windows system files are affected.
Will updating the graphics driver fix it
A driver update can help with device initialization, black screens, or device-removed errors. It is not the normal fix for a missing application-local compiler DLL.
What is the safest final step
Use the affected program’s official launcher to verify or repair its files. If that does not restore the correct copy, uninstall and reinstall the program from its official source, then check antivirus history before launching it again.
