1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYes, a DualShock 4 can be upgraded from Micro USB to USB-C—but this is a third-party internal hardware modification, not an official Sony upgrade. The conversion replaces the controller’s small charging/data daughterboard with a compatible USB-C board. It can make charging more convenient and may support USB-C-to-USB-C cables, but it does not add faster charging, longer battery life, better wireless performance, or USB 3.x speeds.
What the USB-C upgrade changes
The original DualShock 4 uses a separate Micro USB charging board rather than having the connector permanently integrated into the main controller PCB. That modular design makes a port conversion practical: the original board is removed and replaced with a thin PCB carrying a USB-C receptacle and the necessary charging and USB data connections.

Depending on the design, the replacement board may also handle the light-bar LED arrangement and use different flexible ribbon cables. Some kits include 12-pin and 14-pin cables, while other designs group controllers by board revision. The earliest documented conversion relied on a PCB approximately 0.8 mm thick to preserve internal clearance. Hackaday’s original report describes the board swap and the case filing that may be required.

A commercial kit, for example, states that it supports USB-A-to-USB-C charging, USB-C-to-USB-C charging, and USB data, while USB-C PD chargers still operate at normal rather than fast charging speed. Check the specific kit’s documentation rather than assuming every USB-C board has the same capabilities.
Check the DualShock 4 revision first
Do not order solely from a listing titled “PS4 controller USB-C board.” DualShock 4 controllers use multiple internal charging-board layouts, and the exterior model number may not be the identifier used by replacement-board sellers.
Commonly referenced internal revisions include:
- JDS-001
- JDS-011
- JDS-030
- JDS-040
- JDS-050
- JDS-055
Some projects group these as JDS-001/JDS-011, JDS-030, and JDS-040/JDS-05x. Another project advertises support for all six revisions, but that claim applies to that particular design and should not be generalized to every seller. See the project’s supported-revision information before purchasing.
The relevant identifier may be printed on the internal charging board or mainboard. If you cannot confirm it without opening the controller, choose a seller that provides clear revision-identification instructions or use a repair service.

Choosing the right conversion
Preassembled, revision-compatible kit
This is the most practical option for most owners. The board is already populated and may include the required flexible cables and installation instructions. “No soldering” usually means no soldering is needed during installation; it does not mean the job is tool-free. You still need to open the controller, handle ribbon cables, and possibly file the plastic shell.
One kit documented by Lectronz includes the USB-C board, 12-pin and 14-pin flexible cables, and documentation. Product availability, regional shipping, and revision coverage can change, so confirm those details at checkout.
Open-source or bare PCB
Open-source designs can be attractive to experienced electronics builders, but a bare PCB is not equivalent to a ready-to-install module. You may need to source the USB-C receptacle, resistors, LEDs, and other components, then assemble and test the board with fine-pitch soldering equipment.

Professional installation
A repair technician is sensible if the controller is valuable, you lack precision tools, or you are not comfortable modifying the shell. Ask whether the service preserves wired data, light-bar operation, and USB-C-to-USB-C charging before authorizing the work.
Keep Micro USB
If the original port still works and you only want to charge from a USB-C power source, a USB-C-to-Micro USB cable is the lowest-risk solution. It does not repair a loose connector or provide the mechanical convenience of a USB-C receptacle, but it avoids opening the controller.
Tools and parts
For a preassembled kit, expect to need:
- A Phillips screwdriver suitable for DualShock 4 screws
- A plastic opening tool or spudger
- A small precision diamond file
- A cutter or craft knife for minor plastic cleanup
- The revision-compatible replacement board
- Any supplied flexible flat cables
- A known-good USB-C data cable for testing
A self-built board additionally requires a USB-C receptacle, the correct resistors and LEDs, fine-tip soldering equipment, flux, magnification, and a multimeter or continuity tester. The main physical challenge for a preassembled kit is usually controlled shell filing and ribbon-cable handling, not soldering.
Installation overview
Exact steps vary by revision and board design. Use a revision-specific guide rather than treating this as a universal teardown. iFixit’s charging-port replacement guide is useful background for the original board and controller disassembly.

- Identify the internal revision. Confirm the JDS number and match it to the replacement board’s documentation.
- Power down and open the controller. Remove the external screws and separate the shell carefully. The halves remain connected by internal ribbon cables, so do not pull them apart abruptly.
- Disconnect the original charging board. Remove the relevant ribbon cable or cables and the screws holding the Micro USB daughterboard.
- Compare the boards before installing. Check connector orientation, ribbon-cable count, LED position, PCB thickness, screw holes, and mounting geometry.
- Modify the shell opening if required. USB-C is wider and shaped differently from Micro USB. File or cut small amounts of plastic at a time. Do not force the shell closed around the connector.
- Install the replacement board. Seat the board securely and reconnect every ribbon cable with the contacts correctly aligned. Avoid sharp creases.
- Test before final tightening. Check charging, wired USB data, pairing, the light bar, buttons, sticks, and normal controller operation.
- Test multiple cable types. Use a known data-capable USB-A-to-USB-C cable and, if the board claims support, a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. A charge-only cable can make working data hardware appear faulty.
Important risks and limitations
USB-C does not guarantee USB-C-to-USB-C support
A properly designed board needs the appropriate USB-C configuration resistors so a USB-C power source can recognize the controller correctly. Some inexpensive or incomplete boards may work only with USB-A-to-USB-C cables, or may charge without providing reliable data. Confirm explicit USB-C-to-USB-C and data support for the exact board.
Charging and data are separate tests
A controller can charge while failing to communicate with a PS4 or computer. That may indicate a charge-only cable, a poorly seated ribbon, an incompatible board, damaged USB-C hardware, incorrect wiring, or missing components on a self-built PCB.
The light bar may differ
The replacement board may reproduce, relocate, or redesign parts of the original LED arrangement. Do not promise identical light-bar behavior unless the specific kit documents it. Compare the replacement board with the original before closing the shell.

Even a compatible board may sit slightly recessed or protrude depending on the connector height and shell modification. One user report described a connector that was not perfectly flush on a JDS-055 installation despite functioning. Treat this as an installation-specific warning, not a universal defect.

Keep the original board
Retain the original Micro USB board until the modified controller has passed charging, wired data, light-bar, and pairing tests. It provides a useful way to isolate whether a problem comes from the new board or from the controller itself.
Troubleshooting
The controller will not charge
- Reconnect the battery and charging-board ribbons.
- Try a known-good cable and power source.
- Test USB-A-to-USB-C and, if supported, USB-C-to-USB-C.
- Inspect the USB-C receptacle for contamination or bent contacts.
- Reinstall the original board to determine whether the fault follows the modification.
It charges but is not detected over USB
- Use a confirmed data-capable cable.
- Reseat every ribbon cable.
- Verify the JDS revision and board compatibility.
- Confirm that the replacement board supports data rather than charging only.
- Test on both the PS4 and a computer where appropriate.
The light bar does not work
- Confirm that the replacement board includes the required LED hardware.
- Check ribbon orientation and seating.
- Compare the replacement LED arrangement with the original board.
- Reinstall the original board to isolate a board fault.
The connector does not fit cleanly
- Do not force the shell closed.
- Remove only a small amount of plastic at a time.
- Check the specified PCB thickness and connector height.
- Verify the board’s orientation and screw-hole alignment.
- Smooth sharp plastic edges that could damage the cable or connector.
Pairing fails after installation
- Try wired pairing with a known data cable.
- Try the controller’s normal wireless pairing procedure.
- Check the board’s data wiring and ribbon connections.
- Use the original board as a comparison if possible.
Is the USB-C conversion worth it?
It is a reasonable repair for an otherwise healthy DualShock 4 with a worn Micro USB port or an owner who wants to consolidate cables. The strongest case is a controller with good sticks, buttons, battery, and shell that would otherwise remain useful.
It is a poor investment if the controller also has severe stick drift, a failing battery, damaged buttons, or major shell damage. It is also a poor fit for a collectible controller that should remain original, or for anyone unable to identify the internal revision and unwilling to accept cosmetic filing.

Before buying, verify four things in the exact listing:
- Support for your JDS revision
- USB data support
- USB-C-to-USB-C support, if you need it
- Documented light-bar behavior and included cables
Bottom line
A USB-C DualShock 4 is real, useful, and achievable—but it is a third-party board replacement, not a Sony upgrade. Choose a preassembled board matched to the exact JDS revision if you want the most practical route. Choose an open-source PCB only if you are comfortable with electronics assembly. If you simply want to charge from a USB-C power source, use a USB-C-to-Micro USB cable; if the controller has several other faults, replacement or professional repair is likely the better decision.
