d3dcsx_42.dll Missing: Diagnose the Right DirectX Fix

By VGSources Team 18 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

d3dcsx_42.dll is a Microsoft DirectX legacy runtime library used by some older games and graphics applications. If Windows says the file is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, install the official DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package before downloading individual DLL files or changing system folders.

The most reliable repair path is:

  1. Download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010).
  2. Extract the package to a temporary folder.
  3. Run DXSETUP.exe as administrator.
  4. Restart the affected game or application.
  5. If only one game fails, verify or repair that game’s files as well.

What d3dcsx_42.dll is

d3dcsx_42.dll belongs to Microsoft DirectX for Windows. Microsoft describes D3DCSX as the DirectCompute utility library and lists d3dcsx_42.dll among the legacy DirectX side-by-side components. It is commonly identified as part of the Direct3D 10.1 Extensions component. Microsoft’s DirectX SDK documentation and Microsoft’s framework package file list document the component family and filename.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This is not:

  • A Visual C++ Redistributable file.
  • A .NET Framework file.
  • A graphics-card driver.
  • The main Direct3D system library.
  • A file that is guaranteed to exist on every Windows installation.
  • A replacement for d3dcsx_43.dll, D3DX9_42.dll, or other numbered DirectX files.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include the modern DirectX runtime used by current applications. That does not mean every optional legacy DirectX side-by-side library is installed. Older games may still require files from the June 2010 runtime package.

Version and identification clues

Item Identification
Filename d3dcsx_42.dll
Product family Microsoft DirectX for Windows
Component D3DCSX DirectCompute utility library
Common description Direct3D 10.1 Extensions
Runtime type Optional legacy DirectX side-by-side component
Common reported 64-bit build 9.27.952.3022, approximately 5.3 MB
Official package DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
Common architecture issue A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL

The version and size are useful identification clues, not a replacement for validating the file’s source and signature. Microsoft’s download page does not publish a current per-file hash or complete manifest for this particular DLL.

  • Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
  • Memory Interface: 64-bit
  • Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1

The _42 suffix matters. DirectX keeps many optional components side by side because applications can depend on the specific version against which they were built. Installing a different numbered file is not a dependable substitute. Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance explains why these legacy components are installed side by side.

Fix 1: Install the official June 2010 DirectX runtime

This is the best first repair when an older game or graphics application reports that d3dcsx_42.dll is missing.

The package is separate from the modern DirectX components maintained through Windows. Microsoft describes it as installing legacy D3DX, HLSL compiler, XInput, XAudio, XACT, and related DirectX components. Installing it does not downgrade the core DirectX runtime already used by Windows. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes download page

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download and run the package

  1. Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) page.
  2. Download directx_Jun2010_redist.exe.
  3. Open your Downloads folder.
  4. Right-click the downloaded file and select Run as administrator.
  5. Accept the license terms.
  6. When the package asks where to extract its files, choose a temporary folder that is easy to find, such as a new folder on the desktop.
  7. Open the extraction folder.
  8. Find DXSETUP.exe.
  9. Right-click DXSETUP.exe and select Run as administrator.
  10. Follow the DirectX Setup prompts.
  11. Restart Windows after setup completes.
  12. Launch the affected application again.

The downloaded .exe is an extraction package. The actual installation is performed by DXSETUP.exe inside the extracted folder. Running only the outer package and leaving the extracted files unused does not complete the setup.

What success looks like

The repair worked if:

  • The game or application starts normally.
  • The original missing-file message no longer appears.
  • Other legacy DirectX errors disappear at the same time.
  • DirectX Setup completes without reporting a setup failure.

dxdiag can confirm the general DirectX environment:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type dxdiag.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Save All Information if you need a text report for support.

dxdiag reports the installed core DirectX environment. It does not prove that every optional legacy DLL, including d3dcsx_42.dll, is installed.

If the web installer fails

Microsoft also provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, commonly downloaded as dxwebsetup.exe. It is a small downloader that obtains the required files during setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the web installer fails, hangs, or reports that setup cannot continue:

  1. Close the web installer.
  2. Download the offline directx_Jun2010_redist.exe package instead.
  3. Extract it to a temporary folder.
  4. Run the extracted DXSETUP.exe as administrator.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application again.

The offline package is the better choice when the target computer has restricted internet access, when the web installer cannot complete, or when the game’s installer expects the older full redistributable package. Microsoft’s repair guidance also recommends using the offline package and running DXSETUP.exe when the web installer fails. Microsoft Q&A guidance

Fix 2: Repair the game or application that reports the error

If only one program fails while other DirectX applications work, the program’s own installation is a strong suspect. An interrupted update, damaged game file, cleanup utility, mod, or failed patch may have removed a local runtime file or left the installation incomplete.

The file may be supplied by the application’s installer or deployed through a framework package. That means reinstalling the complete application can be more effective than replacing one DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the launcher’s verification option

For a Steam, Epic, GOG, or similar installation, open the launcher and look for a command named Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair.

The usual process is:

  1. Open the game launcher.
  2. Open your library.
  3. Select the affected game.
  4. Open its menu, often represented by three dots or a gear icon.
  5. Select Manage, Properties, or Settings.
  6. Choose Verify, Verify integrity of game files, or Repair.
  7. Wait for the scan to finish.
  8. Allow the launcher to download or restore damaged files.
  9. Restart the launcher.
  10. Test the game again.

A verification scan may restore files that belong beside the game executable. It may also restore the game’s bundled DirectX installer.

Run the game’s own DirectX installer

Many older games include a redistributable folder. Check the game’s installation directory for folders named:

  • Redist
  • _CommonRedist
  • DirectX
  • Support
  • Installers

Look for DXSETUP.exe inside those folders.

If you find it:

  1. Right-click DXSETUP.exe.
  2. Select Run as administrator.
  3. Complete the setup.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Launch the game.

The bundled installer is useful because it was selected by the application publisher for that release. If the game’s files are damaged, verify the installation first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair or reinstall the application

If verification does not help:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Open its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Test the application.

If no repair option exists or repair fails, uninstall and reinstall the program from its official installer or launcher. Back up saved games and configuration files first if the application stores them outside cloud synchronization.

A complete reinstall is the definitive repair when the file belongs to one application and that application’s installation is incomplete. Reinstalling DirectX alone cannot repair an executable, a damaged game archive, or a missing application-specific dependency.

Fix 3: Check the 32-bit and 64-bit architecture

Architecture mismatches can produce the same symptoms as a missing DLL.

On 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 is normally used for 64-bit system binaries.
  • SysWOW64 is normally used for 32-bit system binaries.
  • A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL.
  • A 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

This naming is confusing, but it is normal Windows behavior. Microsoft documents the directory redirection rules in its File System Redirector documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not decide which file to copy based only on the folder name. Let DirectX Setup or the application installer deploy the correct architecture.

Determine the application architecture

Windows does not always show the bitness clearly in a normal shortcut. You can use these clues:

  • Older games are often 32-bit even when installed on 64-bit Windows.
  • A program installed under C:\Program Files (x86) is commonly 32-bit.
  • A program installed under C:\Program Files may be 64-bit, but the folder alone is not absolute proof.
  • The application vendor’s documentation may identify the executable architecture.
  • A diagnostic tool such as Task Manager may display a 32-bit marker for a running process.

If the application is 32-bit, it needs the 32-bit DirectX component. If it is 64-bit, it needs the 64-bit component. Installing only one architecture may leave the application unable to load its dependency.

Locate existing copies safely

To search the Windows directory for the file:

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Run:
where /r "%windir%" d3dcsx_42.dll

If the command returns a path, inspect the location rather than assuming the copy is valid. A copy in a temporary folder or an unknown download directory should not be trusted merely because its name is correct.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also search the application folder and its parent directories in File Explorer. A package-managed application may deploy the DLL through its own framework rather than placing it directly in System32 or SysWOW64.

A file existing somewhere on the disk does not prove that the failing process can load it. The application may need a different architecture, a different side-by-side version, or another dependency that is missing.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

If the error appeared immediately after an antivirus scan, game update, or security cleanup, Windows Security may have quarantined the file.

Review Protection History

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Expand the event associated with the game or application.
  7. Review the detected file path, detection name, and action taken.

Do not restore the file just because it is named d3dcsx_42.dll. A Microsoft-style filename can be copied onto a system by malware, and a file in an unexpected user folder deserves additional scrutiny.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft explains that quarantined items can be restored, but also warns that allowing an unsafe file can put the device and data at risk. Microsoft Protection History guidance

Safer restoration process

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

  • It came from the official DirectX installer or the application’s legitimate installer.
  • The original path was a normal Windows or application directory.
  • The security detection is confirmed to be a false positive.
  • The file has a valid digital signature where one is expected.
  • A current security scan does not identify broader malware activity.

If the file came from a random download folder, do not restore it. Remove the unknown copy, run a full scan, and reinstall DirectX or repair the application from its official source.

If Windows Security quarantined a file from a legitimate installation, reinstalling the official package is usually preferable to restoring a damaged or partially modified copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other problems exist

SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself has broader corruption. They are not the first-line repair for an optional legacy DirectX DLL, but they are appropriate when you also see:

  • Several unrelated DLL failures.
  • Broken Windows features.
  • Repeated update failures.
  • Damaged system applications.
  • System-file warnings.
  • Unusual crashes outside the affected game.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows if DISM requests it.

Do not close the window while DISM is working. The progress display may pause for a while.

Run SFC

After DISM completes:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the application again.

SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. If it repaired files, restart before testing. If it could not repair files, review the CBS log or continue with application repair rather than repeatedly running the same command without addressing the underlying issue.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through Windows repair results and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair actions are completed by the full version. It is optional, and when the file belongs to one game or application, repairing or reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix.

Fix 6: Install pending Windows updates

Windows Update is useful for general compatibility, security, and driver maintenance, but it is not normally the installer for this optional legacy DirectX DLL.

To check for updates:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Choose Download & install for available updates.
  6. Restart Windows if requested.
  7. Test the application.

Microsoft’s update procedure is documented in Install Windows updates.

If Windows Update reports an error, resolve that error separately. Do not assume that installing every available update will add d3dcsx_42.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Update or reinstall the graphics driver only when symptoms match

A graphics driver does not normally replace d3dcsx_42.dll. Driver repair is appropriate when the missing-file message appears together with:

  • Display-driver crashes.
  • Black screens.
  • Direct3D initialization failures.
  • Device Manager warning icons.
  • Screen corruption.
  • A recent GPU driver installation that coincided with the failure.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Check the Device status field.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Review the driver provider, date, and version.

If the device has a warning icon, follow the driver repair path before blaming the DirectX DLL.

Reinstall through Device Manager

Microsoft’s basic procedure is:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the GPU.
  5. Select Uninstall device.
  6. Confirm the uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.

Windows will attempt to reinstall the device driver after the restart. Microsoft documents this process in Update drivers through Device Manager.

Outbyte Driver Updater can remove the guesswork of checking which drivers are stale across the system; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and a game that specifically lacks d3dcsx_42.dll still needs DirectX or application repair.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After reinstalling the driver, test the game. If the same DLL message remains but the display driver is stable, return to the DirectX and application repair steps.

Fix 8: Use System Restore when a recent change caused the failure

System Restore fits a narrow situation: the application worked before a driver installation, cleanup operation, Windows change, security action, or program installation, and a suitable restore point exists.

To open System Restore:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the failure began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next.
  7. Select Finish.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal files. Microsoft System Restore guidance

Do not use an arbitrary restore point just because it is available. Choose one tied to the event that preceded the error. If no suitable restore point exists, use the official DirectX installer and application repair instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL by itself

Random DLL download sites can provide:

  • The wrong numbered DirectX version.
  • The wrong x86 or x64 architecture.
  • Modified or unsigned binaries.
  • A file with malware.
  • A DLL missing its own dependencies.
  • A copy that works temporarily while leaving the actual installation damaged.

A standalone replacement also does not repair the application’s installer, registry state, side-by-side runtime setup, or other missing DirectX files.

Use Microsoft’s DirectX package, the game’s bundled installer, launcher verification, or a complete application reinstall.

Do not copy blindly into System32 or SysWOW64

Copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit location does not convert it into a 64-bit file. Copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory creates the opposite mismatch.

It can also create permission, servicing, and update problems. If manual application-local deployment is required for software development, use the exact signed runtime supplied by the application vendor and match the executable architecture. Ordinary users should use an installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rename another DirectX file

These files are not interchangeable:

  • d3dcsx_42.dll
  • d3dcsx_43.dll
  • D3DX9_42.dll
  • D3DX11_*.dll

The filename suffix and component family identify different runtime dependencies. Renaming a different file does not make it compatible.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents it as a registration utility, not as a generic DLL installer. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation

d3dcsx_42.dll is a runtime library loaded by DirectX applications, not a documented self-registering COM component. Running:

regsvr32 d3dcsx_42.dll

may produce an error about a missing DllRegisterServer entry point. It does not install the DirectX runtime and will not repair a missing dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not install Visual C++ or .NET for this specific message

Visual C++ and .NET are separate dependency families. Install them only when the application reports a Visual C++ or .NET requirement.

Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable documentation covers packages such as vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe. Those packages do not install d3dcsx_42.dll.

Do not treat “Windows is up to date” as proof that DirectX is complete

Windows Update maintains Windows components and drivers. It does not guarantee that every optional legacy DirectX SDK library is present.

Likewise, dxdiag can report a healthy modern DirectX environment while an older game still lacks a legacy side-by-side component.

When the file exists but Windows still reports an error

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named file is absent. It can also mean:

  • A dependency of the DLL is missing.
  • The application loaded the wrong architecture.
  • The file is in a directory the process does not search.
  • The file is damaged.
  • The application requires a different numbered side-by-side version.
  • Antivirus software removed another required file.

Use this order:

  1. Run the official June 2010 DirectX installer again.
  2. Repair or verify the affected application.
  3. Check the application’s bundled DXSETUP.exe.
  4. Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  5. Check Windows Security Protection History.
  6. Avoid copying individual files from an unknown source.
  7. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC only if broader Windows corruption is present.

If the file is present in System32 but the failing game is 32-bit, that location may not satisfy the game. If the file is present beside the game executable but still fails, another dependency or architecture mismatch may be responsible.

When several DirectX files are missing

Do not repair a long list of filenames one at a time. Install the complete June 2010 runtime from Microsoft.

A group of missing files such as D3DX, XInput, XAudio, XACT, and D3DCSX components usually indicates that the legacy DirectX package was never installed, was damaged, or was removed during application maintenance.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the offline package, execute DXSETUP.exe from the extracted folder, restart Windows, and then verify the game files. If the application still fails, reinstall the application itself.

If Visual C++ or .NET also appears in the error

Treat each dependency separately.

  • A VCRUNTIME or MSVCP message points toward Visual C++.
  • A .NET Framework message points toward the relevant .NET component.
  • A d3dcsx_42.dll message points toward the legacy DirectX component.
  • A graphics-driver initialization error points toward the GPU driver.

Installing unrelated runtimes can add clutter without fixing the reported dependency. Read the complete error text and repair the named component.

If the error began after disk cleanup or a mod

A cleanup utility may have removed application files that it incorrectly classified as temporary. A mod or unofficial patch may also have replaced or deleted a runtime component.

Use the launcher’s verification or repair function first. If the cleanup damaged several files, reinstall the game. If the issue began after a mod, remove the mod using its documented uninstall process and then verify the original files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not restore a DLL from an arbitrary cache folder simply because its filename matches.

If a game shows the error only on one computer

Compare the working and failing systems carefully:

  • Windows architecture.
  • Game executable architecture.
  • Game version and installed updates.
  • Whether the June 2010 runtime has been installed.
  • Whether the game’s bundled DirectX installer was run.
  • Antivirus quarantine history.
  • GPU driver status.
  • Whether the game files were verified.

Do not assume the game universally requires this exact file merely because one user report mentions it. Public reports have associated the filename with individual games, but those reports do not establish that every installation of a particular game uses the same dependency.

If every repair fails

Collect the following before contacting the application vendor:

  • The complete error text.
  • The name and version of the affected program.
  • Windows version and system architecture.
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether d3dcsx_42.dll is absent, misplaced, quarantined, or present but unsigned.
  • Whether other DirectX files are also missing.
  • Whether the June 2010 offline package completed successfully.
  • Whether the game launcher repaired any files.
  • Whether the failure began after an update, cleanup, mod, driver change, or antivirus event.
  • Whether other Direct3D applications show similar failures.

At that stage, investigate the application vendor’s support channel, storage errors, malware, or broader Windows damage. Replacing individual DLLs repeatedly makes diagnosis harder and can introduce incompatible files.

Frequently asked questions

Is d3dcsx_42.dll a Windows system file?

It is a genuine Microsoft DirectX component, but it is not guaranteed to be part of every Windows installation. It belongs to the optional legacy DirectX side-by-side runtime used by some older applications.

Does it belong to DirectX 9, DirectX 10, or DirectX 11?

It is associated with the legacy D3DCSX and Direct3D 10.1 Extensions component family. For repair purposes, install the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package rather than trying to select a modern DirectX version manually.

Is d3dcsx_42.dll the same as d3dcsx_43.dll?

No. The numbered files are different side-by-side versions. An application built for one version may not accept another.

Does installing the latest DirectX fix it?

Not necessarily. Modern Windows already includes current DirectX components, while older applications may need the separate legacy June 2010 runtime. Install the official offline package and run DXSETUP.exe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install both x86 and x64 versions?

Use the architecture required by the application. Many older games are 32-bit even on 64-bit Windows. The DirectX installer and the application’s installer are safer than manually choosing and copying one DLL.

Should the file be in System32 or SysWOW64?

The correct location depends on the process architecture and the deployment method. Classic DirectX setup may place files in Windows system directories, while packaged applications can deploy them through an application framework. Do not move files manually just to force a particular folder.

Can I use regsvr32?

No. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points. It is not a general-purpose repair tool for DirectX runtime libraries.

Should I install Visual C++ or .NET?

Is it safe to restore the DLL from antivirus quarantine?

Only after confirming that the file came from a legitimate signed installer and that the security detection is a false positive. Reinstalling DirectX or repairing the application is safer than restoring an unknown standalone copy.

Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file is present?

The named file may have a missing dependency, the wrong architecture, a damaged binary, or an incorrect search location. Reinstall the complete runtime and repair the application instead of replacing only the visible filename.

Will SFC repair this DLL?

SFC repairs protected Windows system files. d3dcsx_42.dll is an optional legacy DirectX component, so SFC is not the primary repair. Use DISM and SFC when broader Windows corruption is also present.

Is a graphics-driver reinstall required?

Only when there are matching driver symptoms such as display crashes, black screens, Direct3D initialization failures, or Device Manager errors. A graphics driver does not normally install this missing legacy DirectX DLL.

What is the safest fix?

Download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010), extract the package, run DXSETUP.exe as administrator, and then verify or repair the affected application. This addresses the correct runtime family without trusting an unverified standalone DLL.
