Before changing anything, note three details:
- Which program or game shows the error.
- Whether it appears when launching, installing, updating, or using a specific feature.
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
The fastest safe repair is usually the official Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable. The correct package depends on the application, not only on whether Windows itself is 64-bit.
What mfc110.dll is
mfc110.dll is part of the Microsoft Foundation Class, or MFC, runtime supplied with Microsoft Visual Studio 2012. It belongs to the Visual C++ 11.0 runtime family, also identified as VC110.

Microsoft lists mfc110.dll among the files in the Microsoft.VC110.MFC runtime. The Visual C++ 2012 redistributable installs these MFC components for applications built with Visual Studio 2012. See Microsoft’s Visual Studio 2012 redistribution list and the Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable download page.

Microsoft’s current legacy package listing identifies Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 as version 11.0.61030.0. Visual Studio 2012 reached the end of extended support on January 10, 2023, but the redistributable remains available because older applications still depend on it.
What the related files mean
An application may mention one of several similarly named Visual C++ 2012 files:
| File | Role |
|---|---|
mfc110.dll |
An MFC runtime library for Visual C++ 2012 applications |
mfc110u.dll |
A related MFC runtime library in the same VC110 family |
mfcm110.dll |
Another MFC runtime component |
msvcr110.dll |
The Visual C++ 2012 C runtime library |
msvcp110.dll |
The Visual C++ 2012 C++ standard library |
These files are separate, but they are normally repaired together. If the error names mfc110u.dll, msvcr110.dll, or msvcp110.dll, do not download that individual file. Repair or reinstall the complete Visual C++ 2012 redistributable instead.

The official repair to try first
Install or repair the official Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 package before copying files, changing Windows folders, or running registration commands.
Use Microsoft’s Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 download page. The direct installers are also available here:
Choose x86 or x64 correctly
The runtime must match the application architecture.
- A 32-bit application needs the x86 redistributable.
- A 64-bit application needs the x64 redistributable.
- A 64-bit Windows computer running older or mixed software may need both.
- A 32-bit Windows installation uses x86 software and needs the x86 package.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the 32-bit Visual C++ runtime. Installing only x64 does not satisfy that dependency.
To check the Windows architecture:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
If the computer runs 64-bit Windows and you do not know whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit, installing both official Visual C++ 2012 packages is reasonable. The older Visual C++ runtime families can coexist. Do not remove unrelated Visual C++ redistributables just to install this one.
Install or repair the package
- Close the affected application.
- Download the appropriate installer from Microsoft.
- Right-click the downloaded file.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms if prompted.
- Choose Repair if that option appears.
- If Repair is not offered, continue with the normal installation.
- Repeat with the other architecture if you are using both x86 and x64 on 64-bit Windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
A successful repair normally means the program starts without the mfc110.dll message. If the same error returns, continue with the application repair and dependency checks below.
Where Windows may place the file
On 64-bit Windows, Microsoft’s conventional directory mapping is:
- 64-bit runtime files:
C:\Windows\System32 - 32-bit runtime files:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64
The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.

That arrangement is called application-local deployment. It can be legitimate when supplied by the application vendor, but manually copying a downloaded DLL into one of these folders is not a safe repair method.
To search for copies from an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
where /r "%windir%" mfc110.dll
This only finds files. It does not prove that a copy is authentic, compatible, undamaged, or the correct architecture. A file can exist while the program still fails because a dependency is missing or the wrong runtime was installed.
What the error messages mean
You may see several versions of the same loader problem:

The code execution cannot proceed because mfc110.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.

Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
You may also see:
Error loading mfc110.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The last message can be misleading. It may mean that Windows cannot find mfc110.dll, but it can also mean that a dependency required by mfc110.dll is missing.
A damaged or incompatible file can produce a bad-image message similar to:
GalaxyClient.exe - Bad Image
C:\Windows\System32\mfc110.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.
These messages do not all identify the same underlying cause. The problem may be:
- The Visual C++ 2012 runtime is not installed.
- The installed runtime is damaged or incomplete.
- The x86 or x64 package does not match the application.
- The application installation is missing other files.
- Antivirus software quarantined a runtime file.
- A dependency such as
msvcr110.dllormsvcp110.dllis missing. - An unofficial DLL replaced a legitimate file.
- Windows has broader component corruption.
Repair the affected application
If reinstalling or repairing Visual C++ 2012 does not help, repair the program that reports the error. An application may require a particular set of MFC files, an application-local runtime, or other files that the redistributable alone cannot restore.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Windows app repair
For a modern Windows application:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not exist or does not work, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings or stored data.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the repair.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the application has no repair option, uninstall it and reinstall it using the original vendor installer or the application’s official launcher. For a game, use the launcher’s file-verification feature before performing a full reinstall.
A program-specific reinstall is especially important when the error began after an interrupted update, a system migration, a failed installer, or antivirus activity.
Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate runtime file, especially after an incomplete application installation or an update.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an event that refers to the affected application or runtime.
- Check the path and source of the file.
Restore and allow a file only when you have confirmed that it came from Microsoft or a trusted, digitally signed application installer. Do not restore an unknown file simply because its name is mfc110.dll.
If the file was quarantined during installation, the safer sequence is usually:
- Remove the incomplete application installation if necessary.
- Download a fresh installer from Microsoft or the application vendor.
- Temporarily pause third-party antivirus only during the trusted installation, if your security policy allows it.
- Install the Visual C++ runtime or application again.
- Re-enable antivirus immediately.
- Run a security scan.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file may cause Defender to detect it again. A repeated detection requires investigation rather than repeated restoration.
Check for a missing dependency
The named DLL may be present while another required file is absent. This is one reason that manually replacing only mfc110.dll often fails.

Repair both the matching Visual C++ 2012 redistributable and the affected application. If the error began after an application update, the application’s installer may have removed or failed to deploy another dependency.
Do not treat the presence of mfc110.dll as proof that the runtime is usable. The file may be the wrong architecture, damaged, incompatible with the application, or accompanied by a missing dependency.
Why Visual C++ 2015–2022 may not fix this
Installing the newest Visual C++ package does not necessarily replace Visual C++ 2012.
Microsoft provides binary-compatibility guarantees for some later Visual C++ runtime releases, but Visual Studio 2013 and earlier runtimes do not automatically gain that compatibility. A program built for VC++ 11.0 can still require the VC++ 2012 runtime even when a newer redistributable is installed.
That is why the relevant repair is the Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 package, not merely the latest package shown in a generic software checklist. Microsoft documents the distinction in its C++ binary compatibility guidance.
Do not register mfc110.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a routine repair tool for every DLL. It is intended for libraries that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
Running a command such as this for the MFC runtime is not an appropriate fix:
Rank #2
- STREAMLINED & INTUITIVE UI, DVD FORMAT | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC with no prior version of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
- PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.
- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
regsvr32 mfc110.dll
A typical result is:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That means the file does not expose the registration entry point expected by regsvr32. It does not mean that the Visual C++ runtime needs registration.

Only use regsvr32 when the software vendor specifically documents registration for a particular DLL and confirms that the DLL supports it. Microsoft explains this distinction in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Do not download an isolated DLL
Avoid websites that offer individual copies of mfc110.dll. A downloaded DLL can have:
- The wrong architecture.
- The wrong Visual C++ build.
- Missing companion files.
- Malware or tampering.
- An invalid or altered signature.
- A version that conflicts with the application.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory can also hide the real cause and make later servicing harder.
The safe sources are:
- Microsoft’s Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 download page.
- The affected application’s official installer.
- A trusted vendor installer that includes the required Microsoft prerequisite.
An application vendor may legitimately deploy a matching private runtime beside its executable. That is different from downloading a file manually and guessing where it belongs.
If the Visual C++ installer fails
A failed redistributable installation can result from locked files, insufficient permissions, antivirus interference, damaged installer packages, or problems removing an older package.
Try these steps in order:
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Close all applications.
- Temporarily pause third-party antivirus during the trusted Microsoft installation, if permitted.
- Right-click the Microsoft installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the installer again.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- Restart Windows after the installer completes.
Microsoft documents common installer errors including 1603, 5, 32, 1620, and 1714 in its Visual C++ redistributable installation troubleshooting guide.
To inspect temporary installer information:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
%TEMP%
- Press Enter.
- Sort the folder by Date modified.
- Look for files created when the installation failed.
- Keep the error code and the relevant log details if you need vendor or Microsoft support.
Do not delete every Visual C++ package while troubleshooting. Different applications can require different legacy runtime families installed side by side.
When DISM and SFC are appropriate
mfc110.dll is normally an application runtime file, not a protected Windows component. Therefore, System File Checker should not be the first response to a simple missing-runtime message.
Recommended Free Tools
Use DISM and SFC when:
- Several Windows components are also failing.
- Windows Update is damaged.
- The redistributable installer repeatedly fails for unexplained reasons.
- System files were damaged after a crash, disk problem, or failed update.
- Windows reports broader component-store corruption.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the Visual C++ 2012 package again.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed usually does not resolve an application-specific runtime problem.
When the manual DISM and SFC process becomes difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that program’s own files are damaged.

- Close the dialog without changing anything unless the affected application’s documentation specifically requires a feature.
mfc110.dll is not a .NET component, DirectX component, or standard Optional Feature. Enabling random features will not replace the missing Visual C++ runtime and can create unrelated configuration changes.
If the program separately reports a missing .NET or legacy Windows component, handle that message as a separate issue. Continue using the official VC++ 2012 installer for the mfc110.dll dependency.
When Device Manager is relevant
mfc110.dll itself is not a driver. If the error appears while opening a printer utility, scanner application, graphics control panel, device-management program, or hardware configuration tool, the user interface may depend on MFC even though the underlying driver is separate.
Repair the Visual C++ runtime first. Then update or reinstall the associated device software if the error remains.
To check the device driver:
- Open Start.
- Type Device Manager.
- Open it.
- Expand the category for the relevant device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver update is installed.
- Reinstall the complete vendor utility if its interface still reports the DLL error.
When manually hunting through multiple hardware vendors and versions becomes impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing the VC++ runtime or reinstalling the affected vendor utility remains necessary when the application itself is damaged.
Do not uninstall a working display, printer, scanner, or chipset driver solely because an application reports mfc110.dll. The driver may be functioning while its separate control utility is missing the runtime.
Use System Restore only for a recent regression
System Restore is appropriate when the application worked previously and the problem began after a known update, installer, registry change, or system modification.
It requires a suitable restore point. It is not a replacement for installing the correct redistributable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo start System Restore:

- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the programs and updates that may be removed.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back system files, registry settings, installed programs, and updates. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.
If there is no suitable restore point, return to the Visual C++ repair, application reinstall, and antivirus checks instead.
A practical troubleshooting order
Use this order when you want the shortest path through the likely causes:
- Identify the affected application and exact error text.
- Determine whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Install or repair the matching Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 package.
- Install both x86 and x64 on 64-bit Windows if the application architecture is unknown.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair the affected application.
- Verify or reinstall the game or application files.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Investigate missing companion files and dependencies.
- Troubleshoot the Microsoft installer if it fails.
- Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is suspected.
- Use System Restore only when a suitable restore point predates the failure.
- Scan for malware if the file came from an unofficial installer, crack, mod, or suspicious utility.
Common questions about mfc110.dll
Is mfc110.dll part of Windows
It is not a core Windows component. It is a Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 application runtime file. Some computers have it because an installed application or redistributable package placed it there, while others do not need it.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhich package installs mfc110.dll
The relevant package is Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable, preferably the Update 4 package. Choose x86 for a 32-bit application and x64 for a 64-bit application.
Why does a 32-bit program need x86 on 64-bit Windows
The program’s architecture determines which runtime it can load. A 32-bit program cannot use the 64-bit MFC runtime simply because Windows itself is 64-bit.
Should I install both x86 and x64
On 64-bit Windows, installing both is reasonable when you use older programs with unknown or mixed architectures. On 32-bit Windows, use x86 only.
Will Visual C++ 2015–2022 fix it
Not necessarily. VC++ 2012 is a separate legacy runtime family, and a newer package is not a guaranteed replacement for every earlier dependency.
Is the file safe because it is named mfc110.dll
No. The filename alone does not prove that a file is authentic or compatible. Check its source, prefer the Microsoft redistributable, and investigate antivirus detections rather than restoring unknown copies.
Can I copy mfc110.dll into System32
Do not use manual copying as the normal repair. The correct package also supplies related runtime files and installs the architecture-specific components together.
Should I run regsvr32
No, not as a repair for this MFC runtime. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points, and mfc110.dll can produce a DllRegisterServer entry-point error when used with it.
Why does the message say the specified module could not be found when the file exists
Windows may be unable to load a dependency of mfc110.dll, such as another VC++ runtime file. Repair the complete redistributable and the application rather than replacing only the named file.
Does SFC restore mfc110.dll
Not normally. mfc110.dll is an application runtime file rather than a standard protected Windows component. Use SFC when there is evidence of broader Windows corruption or when the redistributable installer repeatedly fails.
If the error still persists
Collect the following information before asking the application vendor or a technician for help:
- The exact application or game name.
- The application version, if shown.
- The complete error message.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit, if known.
- Whether x86, x64, or both VC++ 2012 packages are installed.
- Whether Repair completed successfully.
- Whether the application was repaired or reinstalled.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a related file.
- Any Visual C++ installer error code.
- Whether the problem began after an update, migration, or antivirus event.
- Whether
mfc110.dllexists and where it was found.
The most important distinction is whether the failure belongs to the shared Visual C++ runtime or to the application’s own installation. Repairing the official VC++ 2012 package addresses the first case. Repairing or reinstalling the affected program addresses the second.
