If Windows says d3dx9_25.dll is missing, the safest fix is to install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtime rather than downloading an individual DLL. Install the June 2010 DirectX package, repair the affected game, and then check architecture, antivirus quarantine, and Windows component health if the error remains.
What this file actually does
d3dx9_25.dll is a D3DX9 utility library used by older Direct3D 9 games and graphics applications. It provides helper functionality that a game can call while rendering graphics, loading assets, or preparing Direct3D features.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It is not a graphics-card driver, a Visual C++ runtime, a .NET component, or a normal protected Windows system file. It is an optional, side-by-side DirectX component that can be installed by a game’s prerequisite installer or by Microsoft’s DirectX redistributable.
Microsoft documents the exact error “The file d3dx9_25.dll was not found” for games including Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Age of Empires III and its expansions, Zoo Tycoon 2 products, and Fable III. The same missing dependency can affect other older Direct3D applications. Microsoft’s file-specific support article

The important distinction is that modern Windows can have DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 while still not having every optional D3DX9 library. DirectX’s core version number does not represent every legacy side-by-side component installed on the computer. Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance
DirectX 9.0c and D3DX9 are related but not identical terms. DirectX 9.0c refers broadly to a generation of DirectX runtime components, while D3DX9 refers to optional utility libraries used by applications built with the DirectX 9 SDK. Installing a current DirectX core runtime does not automatically guarantee that d3dx9_25.dll is present.
Causes and symptoms
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The file d3dx9_25.dll was not found” | The legacy D3DX9 component was never installed | Install the June 2010 DirectX End-User Runtime |
| The error appeared after installing or updating a game | The game installation is incomplete or damaged | Use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or file-integrity function |
| The file exists but the program will not start | Wrong architecture, corruption, or an invalid replacement | Reinstall the official runtime and verify the game |
| Several numbered D3DX files are missing | The complete legacy DirectX package is absent | Install the full June 2010 redistributable |
| The error started after an antivirus scan | A game-local DLL may have been quarantined | Check Windows Security Protection history |
DXSETUP.exe reports an internal error |
The package, extraction folder, permissions, or installer environment may be damaged | Download a fresh package, extract it again, and check DirectX logs |
| The game also reports Direct3D initialization or device errors | A graphics driver or compatibility issue may be involved | Update or reinstall the graphics driver after repairing DirectX |
| The problem began after a Windows or software change | A recent system change may have affected the installation | Consider System Restore after the normal repairs |
The exact wording can vary by game and Windows version. Phrases such as “could not be loaded” or “is either not designed to run on Windows” describe broader Windows loader failures, so the complete error message matters.
Fix 1: Install the official June 2010 DirectX runtime
This is the most likely solution when an older game is being run on a clean Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010). The download is named directx_Jun2010_redist.exe and contains the legacy DirectX payloads, including the files identified by Microsoft as Apr2005_d3dx9_25_x86.cab and Apr2005_d3dx9_25_x64.cab.
Install the package step by step
-
Close the game and its launcher.
-
Open Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes download page.
-
Download
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe. -
Open File Explorer and create a temporary folder, such as

When it asks where to extract the files, select the temporary folder you created.
-
Open that folder after extraction finishes.
-
Find
DXSETUP.exe. -
Right-click
DXSETUP.exeand select Run as administrator. -
Accept the license terms and allow DirectSetup to install the components.
-
Restart Windows.
-
Launch the affected game again.
The game should now start without the missing d3dx9_25.dll message. The version shown by dxdiag is not a reliable test for this particular file because dxdiag reports core DirectX information, not every optional side-by-side D3DX library.
Check the game’s own prerequisite folder first
Many older games include the most compatible DirectX installer in their own installation directory. Look for folders named:
Redist_CommonRedistDirectXJun2010PrerequisitesSupport
For Steam, open the game’s library entry, right-click the game, choose Manage, and select Browse local files. Search the resulting folder for DXSETUP.exe.
If the game includes its own DirectX redistributable, run that installer before experimenting with individual files. The game publisher may have bundled the exact prerequisites expected by that release. Steam also notes that games can include secondary installers for DirectX and other required components. Microsoft also provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, named dxwebsetup.exe.

It is useful when the computer has a reliable internet connection and the installer can reach Microsoft’s servers.
For a specific missing file such as d3dx9_25.dll, the full June 2010 redistributable is usually the better troubleshooting package. It extracts the legacy payloads locally, avoids depending on the installer’s network download process, and makes it easier to retry DXSETUP.exe.
If the web installer says that everything is already installed but the game still reports the missing DLL, use the full June 2010 package. Do not keep repeating the web installer and assume that the DirectX version displayed by Windows proves the optional D3DX9 component is installed.
Fix 2: Verify or repair the game installation
If the game was installed through a launcher, the missing file may belong in the game’s own folder rather than in a Windows system directory. A failed update, interrupted download, damaged installation, or antivirus quarantine can remove it.

Fix 3: Check the application architecture
A 32-bit program cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a native 64-bit program cannot load a 32-bit DLL.
The relevant architecture is the game’s executable, not simply whether Windows is 64-bit.
- A 32-bit game on 64-bit Windows needs the x86 DirectX component.
- A native 64-bit game needs the x64 component.
- 32-bit Windows needs the x86 component.
Most older games are 32-bit, even when they run on 64-bit Windows. The official DirectX installer is designed to install the required legacy components, so you normally should not have to choose a CAB file manually.
To check the Windows architecture:
-
Right-click Start.
-
Select Settings.
-
Open System.
-
Select About.
-
Look at System type.
This tells you the Windows architecture, not necessarily the game’s architecture. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit game through its compatibility subsystem.
Do not assume that copying both versions of d3dx9_25.dll will solve the problem. A loader may find the wrong file first, and replacing a valid file with an incompatible one can change a simple missing-file error into a bad-image or load failure.
Fix 4: Do not copy the DLL into random system folders
On 64-bit Windows, the names are counterintuitive:
System32is associated with 64-bit system components.SysWOW64is associated with 32-bit components.
That does not mean you should copy d3dx9_25.dll into both locations. Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation explains the architecture behavior of these folders. Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The normal repair is to run DirectSetup so Windows and the application receive the correct component through the intended installation process. A game may also be designed to load a game-local copy from the folder containing its executable.
If the game’s official installer or Microsoft’s older support instructions specifically require a local copy, place the correctly sourced file in that game’s own folder. Do not use that as a general excuse to populate System32 and SysWOW64.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software can quarantine a game-local DLL after an update or scan. This is especially plausible when the game worked previously and the error appeared immediately after a security scan.
Check the quarantine history:
-
Open the Start menu.
-
Search for Windows Security.
-
Open Windows Security.
-
Select Virus & threat protection.
-
Choose Protection history.
-
Look for an event involving the game folder, DirectX installer, or
d3dx9_25.dll.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- The game came from a trusted publisher or store.
- The file is located in the expected game folder.
- The game installation has not been modified by an unknown program.
- The detection corresponds to the file you expect to restore.
Microsoft notes that restoring a file can cause Defender to detect it again, requiring an explicit decision about whether to allow it. Microsoft’s Protection History documentation
If you cannot establish the file’s provenance, do not restore it. Remove the damaged or suspicious installation and reinstall the game or DirectX runtime from the official source. Avoid broadly disabling antivirus protection just to force a DLL into place.
After restoring a trusted game file, run the launcher’s Verify or Repair command. That confirms the installation rather than relying on a quarantined copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 6: Repair the game before blaming the graphics driver
A missing d3dx9_25.dll is normally a runtime installation problem, not a graphics-driver problem. Reinstalling a driver will not normally create this optional D3DX9 library.
Driver work becomes relevant when the game also reports problems such as:
- Direct3D initialization failure
- Unsupported feature levels
- Device creation errors
- Black screens after launch
- Display-driver crashes
- Rendering corruption
Update the driver through Device Manager
-
Right-click Start.
-
Select Device Manager.
-
Expand Display adapters.
-
Right-click your graphics adapter.
-
Select Update driver.
-
Choose Search automatically for drivers.
-
Follow the prompts.
-
Restart Windows.
Device Manager may not offer the newest driver available for your hardware. For a complete reinstall, download the driver package from the GPU or computer manufacturer’s official support page, close running games, install the package, and restart Windows.
Manually checking display, chipset, and related driver versions can mean hunting through hardware IDs and repeating installs without knowing what changed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional.

If the only error is that d3dx9_25.dll is missing, return to the DirectX installer and launcher repair steps instead of treating the driver as the primary cause.
Fix 7: Repair Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are useful when Windows servicing is damaged, Windows Update is failing, or several unrelated programs report missing or corrupt system components.
They are not guaranteed to restore d3dx9_25.dll, because this file is an optional DirectX runtime component rather than a normal protected Windows file. Use the official DirectX package first when only this DLL is missing.
Run DISM
-
Open the Start menu.
-
Type Terminal.
-
Right-click Windows Terminal.
-
Select Run as administrator.
-
Approve the User Account Control prompt.
-
Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
-
Press Enter.
-
Wait for the operation to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while.

A successful result indicates that the restore operation completed successfully. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, restart Windows, install available Windows updates, and run the command again.
Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair.
Restart Windows after the scan and try the game again. If the DLL error remains but other Windows programs work normally, install the official June 2010 DirectX runtime and repair the game instead of repeatedly running SFC.
If you find yourself repeatedly comparing SFC and DISM results, Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows what it detects; repairs are handled by the full version and remain optional, while reinstalling the affected game is still the definitive fix when its own files are damaged.

Fix 8: Use Windows Features only for separate legacy requirements
Windows Features does not install d3dx9_25.dll. Enabling .NET Framework or DirectPlay may help a different compatibility problem, but neither is a replacement for the legacy DirectX redistributable.
If the game specifically requires DirectPlay:
-
Open Control Panel.
-
Select Programs.
-
Choose Turn Windows features on or off.
-
Expand Legacy Components.
-
Enable DirectPlay.
-
Select OK.
-
Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable random Windows Features simply because the game displays a DirectX-related error. d3dx9_25.dll belongs to the D3DX9 runtime family, so use DXSETUP.exe for that dependency.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is reasonable when the game worked immediately before a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup operation, or other major software change.
It is not the first choice for a missing optional DirectX file because reinstalling the official runtime and repairing the game are more targeted.
To open System Restore:
-
Press Windows key + R.
-
Enter:

-
Press Enter.

Does regsvr32 fix d3dx9_25.dll
No. Do not run:
regsvr32 d3dx9_25.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A runtime library such as d3dx9_25.dll is loaded by the game and is not normally registered as a COM or ActiveX component.
If you try to register it, Windows may report that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not mean the DirectX installation needs another registration command. Microsoft explains this distinction in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
The correct installation mechanism is DirectSetup through DXSETUP.exe.
When manually copying the file is legitimate
Manual copying is acceptable only when the file comes from a trusted original or official installation source and the game’s documentation supports a game-local copy.
Microsoft’s file-specific support article describes extracting the file from the relevant CAB payload on original game media. The relevant payload names are:
Apr2005_d3dx9_25_x86.cabApr2005_d3dx9_25_x64.cab
Use the CAB that matches the application architecture. For a 32-bit game, use the x86 payload even when Windows itself is 64-bit. For a native 64-bit game, use the x64 payload.
A safe manual process is:
-
Open the original game disc or official DirectX package.

Locate the appropriate CAB file.
-
Extract
d3dx9_25.dllfrom that CAB. -
Open the folder containing the game’s executable.
-
Copy the file into that game folder.
-
Run the launcher’s Verify or Repair function.
-

Do not copy an unknown DLL into both system directories. Do not delete an existing DLL to force an installer to replace it. Do not use a random DLL repository as the source.

What to do with “bad image” and “could not be loaded” errors
If the file exists but Windows says it is not designed to run on Windows, or the application reports that it could not be loaded, the file may be:
- The wrong architecture
- Corrupted
- Incomplete
- Replaced by an invalid download
- Incompatible with the game’s expected runtime
Do not assume that the mere presence of the file means the correct component is installed.
Follow this order:
-
Stop using any manually downloaded replacement.
-
Run the launcher’s Verify or Repair function.
-
Install the official June 2010 DirectX runtime.
-
Confirm that the game executable and runtime architecture match.
-
Restart Windows.
-
Launch the game again.
Do not use regsvr32, and do not replace files in both System32 and SysWOW64.
What if several DirectX DLLs are missing
Install the complete legacy DirectX runtime rather than replacing individual files.
D3DX libraries are side-by-side, and an older game may require a specific numbered file. d3dx9_43.dll is not a substitute for d3dx9_25.dll, even though both belong to the D3DX9 family.
The same principle applies to other legacy DirectX components such as XInput or XAudio files. Use Microsoft’s full redistributable or the game’s bundled prerequisite installer so the related dependencies are installed together.
What evidence to collect before contacting support
If the normal repair path fails, collect enough information for the game publisher or launcher support team to reproduce the problem.
Record:
- The complete error message
- The game or application name
- The launcher used
- Whether the installation came from Steam, Epic, EA, GOG, original media, or another trusted source
- Your Windows version
- The Windows system architecture
- The game executable architecture, if known
- Whether the error began after an update, driver installation, or antivirus scan
- Whether Verify, Repair, and the June 2010 DirectX installer completed successfully
- Any Windows Security quarantine entry
- The contents of
C:\Windows\DXError.log - The contents of
C:\Windows\DirectX.log
To record the Windows version, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and press Enter.
You can also run dxdiag, select Save All Information, and provide the resulting report to trusted support. Remember that the report can confirm general DirectX and driver information, but it does not by itself prove that the optional d3dx9_25.dll component is installed.
FAQ
Does DirectX 12 include d3dx9_25.dll
Not necessarily. DirectX 12 being installed does not guarantee that optional, legacy D3DX9 side-by-side libraries are present. Install the June 2010 DirectX runtime for older games that require this file.
Is d3dx9_25.dll part of Windows
It is not a core Windows DLL. It is an optional legacy DirectX utility component that may be installed by a game prerequisite package or Microsoft’s DirectX redistributable.
Should I install DirectX 9.0c
Use the official legacy DirectX package rather than relying on a generic DirectX version label. The June 2010 redistributable is the relevant Microsoft package for legacy D3DX components.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should the file go in System32 or SysWOW64
Normally, neither. Run DXSETUP.exe and let the official installer handle the component. If a trusted game-specific instruction requires a local copy, place the correctly sourced file in that game’s executable folder.
Can Visual C++ or .NET install this file
No. Visual C++ and .NET are separate runtimes. Repairing them may fix a different dependency error, but they do not install d3dx9_25.dll.
Can Windows Update install it
Windows Update can repair Windows servicing problems, but it does not normally provide every optional legacy D3DX9 component. Use the official DirectX redistributable.
Do I need to register the DLL
No. d3dx9_25.dll is not normally a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. regsvr32 is not the correct repair method.
Why does the game’s launcher still report the file as missing after DirectX installation
The game installation may be incomplete, the launcher may have quarantined or removed a game-local copy, or the application may require a particular architecture. Run Verify or Repair, check Protection history, and reinstall the full DirectX package if the web installer was used first.
Is it safe to download only d3dx9_25.dll
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, corrupted files, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the game’s expected runtime. Use Microsoft’s DirectX pages, the game’s own prerequisite folder, or trusted original installation media instead.
