Modrinth uses automated malware scanning, file validation, and human moderation, yet its files are still third-party software. A compromised creator account, malicious update, hidden dependency, or carefully disguised payload can evade detection.
The practical rule is simple: use the official modrinth.com website or official Modrinth App, verify what you download, keep antivirus protection enabled, and treat any unrelated executable or urgent “verification” request as suspicious.

The short answer
Modrinth is reputable and usually safe, but no user-upload platform can promise that every file is harmless. Mods run as software through Minecraft’s Java environment. Depending on the mod, loader, Java runtime, operating system, permissions, and vulnerabilities involved, a malicious mod could access files, make network connections, download additional payloads, or steal credentials and session data.

That is a legal limitation of warranty—not an admission that Modrinth routinely distributes malware. It reflects the unavoidable limitation of screening user-uploaded software.

Modrinth is also not an official Mojang or Microsoft service. It is a platform for Minecraft Java Edition content, including mods, plugins, data packs, shaders, resource packs, and modpacks. Its desktop app is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
What Modrinth does to reduce the risk
Modrinth reports several layers of review and moderation:
- an in-house malware-scanning tool;
- manual escalation to technical moderators when suspicious traces are detected;
- validation that uploaded files are the expected Minecraft project types;
- rules prohibiting malicious or harmful content;
- user reporting for projects, versions, and accounts; and
- a security-reporting process for vulnerabilities.
Its project-review guidance says that mods, plugins, and especially modpacks can require more difficult assessment. The API documentation also describes file-type validation. Validation confirms that a file resembles the expected Minecraft content; it does not certify that the code is benign.

These safeguards reduce risk, but they cannot prove that every newly uploaded, modified, obfuscated, or compromised file is safe.
Why even a reputable platform can have a malicious file
There are several different threat models, and they should not be confused:

- Malicious project: the creator intentionally uploads harmful code.
- Compromised creator account: an attacker takes over a legitimate author’s account and publishes a harmful update.
- Malicious dependency: a trusted mod pulls in another project that has been compromised.
- Impostor download: a fake project, mirror, advertisement, or lookalike domain tricks users into downloading the wrong file.
- Social engineering: a server, video, or Discord message persuades users to run an “installer,” “verification tool,” or “anti-cheat” program.
- Server-side delivery: a server supplies a resource-pack URL or exploits a flaw in Minecraft, Java, a loader, or a client mod.
Malware may be obfuscated, disguised as ordinary mod code, or too new for security tools to recognize. A clean antivirus result can therefore be a false negative, just as an alert can occasionally be a false positive.
The Windows Borderless incident
Modrinth’s documented Windows Borderless malware disclosure shows why “reputable” does not mean “immune.” Modrinth said that specific affected files were downloaded between May 4 and May 6, 2024, and that users who ran the affected mod could be compromised.
Modrinth responded with a detection tool and described plans for a shared known-malware quarantine and checking system. The incident does not prove that Modrinth is broadly unsafe today, nor does it show that every version of the project was malicious. It does prove that malicious content can reach a trusted platform and that users should not treat a project page as an absolute security guarantee.
Are modpacks more dangerous than individual mods?
Not automatically, but they have a larger attack surface. A modpack may contain dozens or hundreds of mods, libraries, resource packs, shaders, configuration files, loader components, and dependencies. Some packs also reference files hosted outside Modrinth.
A modpack installed through the official Modrinth App is preferable to a random archive received through Discord. However, a .mrpack file is not automatically safe merely because of its extension. Modrinth’s changelog records warnings for unknown modpack files and fixes for security vulnerabilities involving .mrpack importing.

Do not casually bypass an “unknown modpack file” warning. Confirm where the file came from, who created it, which project it belongs to, and whether the app is importing it from a trusted source.
Can resource packs and Minecraft servers be dangerous?
Yes. The risk is not limited to a downloaded JAR file. An unfamiliar server may send a resource-pack URL, redirect you to an external download, probe local-network services, or exploit a vulnerability in Minecraft, Java, a loader, or a client-side mod.
The OpSec mod page describes threat classes involving server-provided resource-pack URLs and local or private addresses. This is an example of a possible threat model, not evidence that every server or resource pack is malicious.
Never run an executable supplied by a server. Be especially wary of “required anti-cheat,” “voice chat,” or “verification” programs, and test unfamiliar servers in a separate Minecraft instance.
How to download safely from Modrinth
- Use the real domain. Navigate directly to modrinth.com or modrinth.com/app. Avoid lookalike domains, sponsored search-result advertisements, cracked-launcher sites, shortened links, and unofficial mirrors.
- Verify the project. Check the author, project history, changelogs, source links, issue discussions, supported Minecraft version, mod loader, and dependencies.
- Choose the correct release. Prefer a stable, clearly explained version that matches your Minecraft version and loader. Do not blindly install an unexplained experimental build or urgent update.
- Expect a mod to be a mod—not a random installer. A normal mod generally belongs in the appropriate
modsdirectory. Be suspicious if you are told to run an.exe,.bat,.cmd, or PowerShell script. - Do not disable security tools. A request to turn off antivirus, grant administrator access, install a browser extension, or enter your Microsoft password on a third-party page is a major warning sign.
- Scan the download and the instance. Keep real-time protection enabled and scan the archive, JAR, installer, and complete instance where appropriate.
- Use a separate test instance. Test unfamiliar mods and modpacks without personal worlds, saved credentials, or unrelated mods.
- Back up worlds separately. Store backups outside the Minecraft instance directory so a damaged or malicious installation cannot destroy the only copy.
- Update the complete stack. Keep Minecraft, Java, the loader, Modrinth App, and installed mods updated from official sources.
Linux users should note that the official Modrinth app page recommends Flathub as the official route in its current guidance and points to Prism Launcher as an alternative if the Modrinth App is unstable on a particular system.

How to judge an unfamiliar project
Download counts and open-source links are useful signals, not proof. A popular account can be compromised, a safe project can receive a malicious update, and a public repository does not guarantee that the published JAR matches the visible source or that all dependencies are safe.

| Unexpected executable or script | A strong warning sign for ordinary mod installation. |
| Sudden ownership or branding change | Reason to pause and verify the project independently. |
Modrinth has also disclosed historical problems involving inflated download counts caused by a rate-limiting issue. Popularity should therefore be only one part of your assessment.
What an antivirus warning means
Do not automatically ignore an alert, but do not automatically conclude that every alert proves malware either. Mod loaders, launchers, updaters, packed files, obfuscated code, and software that modifies Minecraft files can trigger heuristic or machine-learning detections.
Pay attention to the exact classification:
- Specific malware-family detection: more concerning than a vague generic warning.
- Generic Trojan detection: requires investigation of the exact file and its source.
- Potentially unwanted application: may indicate bundled or undesirable behavior rather than confirmed malware.
- Heuristic or machine-learning detection: can be a false positive, but should not be dismissed.
- Multiple detections from reputable engines: generally more concerning than one isolated outlier.
A service such as VirusTotal can provide additional file and URL signals. It is not a certification service: zero detections means only that participating engines did not identify the submitted sample at that time. Do not upload private files, confidential modpacks, credentials, or sensitive data.

- Stop launching the Minecraft instance and disconnect it from the network if active compromise seems likely.
- Record the project URL, exact version, filename, download source, and time of download.
- Quarantine the file through your antivirus product. Do not keep launching it to reproduce the problem.
- Scan the complete instance and check recently modified files, startup entries, browser extensions, and other relevant locations.
- From a clean device, change important passwords, beginning with email, Microsoft, Discord, password manager, and financial accounts.
- Revoke active sessions and tokens wherever the service supports it.
- Preserve the suspicious file only if doing so is safe and permitted. Do not upload potentially private data to a public scanner.
- Report the project or version to Modrinth with the evidence you collected.
- If compromise is credible, use a trusted recovery process or reinstall the operating system instead of assuming that deleting one JAR removed every payload.
Malware can target browser cookies, Discord sessions, email access, Microsoft credentials, and other local secrets—not just Minecraft worlds.

How to report suspicious Modrinth content
Modrinth’s Content Rules provide reporting through project, version, or user pages. Its security notice directs vulnerability reports to its support process rather than public disclosure in a GitHub issue. Modrinth lists [email protected] for support contact.
Include:
- the project URL and exact version;
- the filename and SHA-256 hash, if available;
- the antivirus detection name;
- where and when the file was downloaded;
- whether it was executed;
- relevant logs or screenshots; and
- non-destructive reproduction details.
Modrinth versus random download sites

The official Modrinth App can make instance management more convenient, while alternatives such as Prism Launcher may suit advanced users who want more control over Java versions, loaders, and instances. Neither a launcher nor a paid subscription makes third-party mods risk-free. Likewise, Microsoft Defender or a second-opinion scanner such as Malwarebytes can improve detection, but no security product guarantees that a new Minecraft payload will be identified.
Final verdict
Modrinth is a sensible place to get Minecraft Java content and is generally safer than random mod websites, cracked launchers, file-hosting pages, or links from strangers. Its scanning, moderation, validation, reporting, and disclosure processes meaningfully reduce risk.

But Modrinth is not “safe from viruses” in an absolute sense. Treat it like a software repository, not a guarantee: use the official domain, inspect the project and dependencies, keep security tools active, avoid unrelated executables and urgent verification requests, test unfamiliar content separately, and respond seriously to antivirus warnings.
