The 60-second answer

d3dx9d_24.dll is a DirectX 9 D3DX debug-runtime library used by some older games, development builds, mods and software based on older Direct3D 9 engines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most important detail is the final d:

  • d3dx9_24.dll is the retail DirectX 9 utility library. The official Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime usually addresses this case.
  • d3dx9d_24.dll is the debug version. It is normally supplied by the application, a developer package or the legacy DirectX SDK.

If the error names d3dx9d_24.dll exactly, repair or reinstall the game or application first. Do not replace it with d3dx9_24.dll, rename another D3DX file, or download a random copy from a DLL website.

  • 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.

If the error actually names d3dx9_24.dll without the d, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010), then run DXSETUP.exe after extracting the package.

What d3dx9d_24.dll does

D3DX was an optional set of Direct3D 9 utility components. It provided functionality used for tasks such as mesh handling, texture processing, mathematical operations and effects.

The Direct3D core components are part of Windows, but D3DX was distributed separately and installed side by side. It is not an essential Windows system file, and Windows 10 or Windows 11 does not necessarily include every old D3DX library that a game may request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents D3DX and its legacy deployment model in its D3DX documentation and DirectX installation guidance for game developers.

The _24 portion identifies one side-by-side D3DX release. It should not be treated as a generic version number that can be replaced with _25, _43 or another suffix. Those files can expose different exports and behavior.

The final d indicates a debug build. It does not refer to Windows 10, Windows 11 or a different Windows edition.

A debug request is unusual for a normal consumer application. It can occur with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Older Direct3D 9 games.
  • Development or test builds.
  • Modded games.
  • Software derived from older game engines.
  • An application that was packaged with a private debug runtime.

Older Battlefield 2-derived software and Project Reality have produced errors that explicitly request D3DX9d_24.dll to work around a DirectX SDK issue. That type of message means the application deliberately wants the debug build. It is not the same situation as a standard game missing the retail d3dx9_24.dll.

First, confirm which file the program wants

Before installing anything, read the filename carefully. These are different requests:

d3dx9_24.dll
d3dx9d_24.dll

The extra d before _24 changes the repair path.

Also identify the program that shows the error. Look at the window title, desktop shortcut, launcher or executable path. If the message appears immediately after launching a game, that game is normally the correct repair target.

Do not assume that every D3DX error requires the same DirectX package. Match the remedy to the exact filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected game or application

This is the safest and most likely fix for a literal d3dx9d_24.dll error.

The application may have been shipped with its own copy of the debug library. That copy could have been deleted, damaged or quarantined even though Windows itself is healthy.

Verify files in Steam

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Select Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for Steam to complete the check.
  8. Start the game again.

If Steam reports that files were reacquired, test the game after the download finishes. If the same error remains, restart Windows and test once more.

If verification completes without finding anything, the game may not include the debug DLL in its current package. Continue with a full reinstall or check whether the game has a separate legacy DirectX or runtime installer in its installation folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify files in Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Find the affected game.
  4. Select the three dots beside the game.
  5. Select Manage.
  6. Select Verify.
  7. Wait for the process to finish.
  8. Launch the game again.

Repair a game in the EA app

  1. Open the EA app.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Find the affected game.
  4. Select the three-dot menu on the game.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Allow the repair to finish.
  7. Start the game again.

Other launchers use similar file-repair functions. Look for commands named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair or Validate files.

Reinstall the application

If verification does not restore the file:

  1. Back up saved games and any custom configuration files.
  2. Uninstall the affected application from Settings.
  3. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  4. Select Apps.
  5. Select Installed apps.
  6. Find the game or application.
  7. Select its three-dot menu.
  8. Select Uninstall.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Download or reinstall the application from its legitimate launcher or vendor installer.
  11. Launch it once before restoring modifications or third-party files.

A clean reinstall is particularly important when the application was moved between drives, partially updated, modified with a mod pack or installed from old media.

If the application was built by a developer or supplied as a test build, obtain the matching runtime from the software vendor. The vendor may need to rebuild the program against the retail D3DX library instead of requiring a debug library.

Fix 2: Install the official DirectX runtime for the retail DLL

Use this fix when the error says d3dx9_24.dll without the final d.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include modern DirectX components, but that does not mean they contain every legacy side-by-side D3DX file used by older games. Microsoft’s legacy DirectX package is designed to install these older components without replacing the main DirectX version built into Windows.

Install the June 2010 offline package

  1. Download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010).
  2. Run directx_Jun2010_redist.exe.
  3. When asked for an extraction location, choose a temporary folder such as:
C:\Temp\DirectXJune2010
  1. Open the extraction folder.
  2. Double-click DXSETUP.exe.
  3. Accept the license terms.
  4. Allow the installer to complete.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the affected application.

Extracting directx_Jun2010_redist.exe is not the same as installing DirectX. You must open the extracted folder and run DXSETUP.exe.

The June 2010 package contains legacy side-by-side DirectX components, including retail D3DX libraries, XInput and XAudio components. It does not upgrade Windows to a new core DirectX version.

Use the web installer

Microsoft also provides the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use it:

  1. Download dxwebsetup.exe from Microsoft.
  2. Right-click the downloaded file.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Follow the setup prompts.
  5. Decline any optional software that you do not need.
  6. Allow the installer to complete.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Test the application.

The web installer needs an internet connection and downloads the required legacy components during setup. The offline package is more useful when repairing multiple computers or working on a machine with limited connectivity.

If the exact debug DLL is still missing

That result is expected if the program specifically asks for d3dx9d_24.dll. The consumer DirectX End-User Runtime is not established as a guaranteed installer for that exact debug library.

Return to application repair or reinstall the affected application. Developers who need debug runtime files should use the matching legacy DirectX SDK or obtain the runtime from the software vendor. Microsoft’s DirectX SDK download and debug-runtime deployment guidance describe that developer scenario.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software or Windows Security may have removed a file from the application folder. That does not prove the file was safe or malicious, so inspect the detection before restoring anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Protection History

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Select Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Look for an entry that names the affected application or d3dx9d_24.dll.
  7. Open the entry and review its details.

Microsoft explains this process in its Protection History guidance.

If the application came from a trusted official installer and the detection clearly concerns the application’s own file, repair or reinstall the application first. That restores the vendor-provided copy and lets the security software scan it again.

Do not download a replacement DLL from an unknown site and then create an antivirus exclusion just to make the error disappear. If Windows Security continues to detect the file, investigate the detection and reinstall the application from a trusted source.

Fix 4: Check the application folder and load location

A valid copy of d3dx9d_24.dll normally belongs beside the executable that needs it when the vendor distributes it privately.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect the location:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Select Open File Location.
  4. Look for the application executable and its runtime files.
  5. Check whether d3dx9d_24.dll is present in that folder.

You can also search the application’s installation directory in File Explorer.

Do not scatter a downloaded copy through both System32 and SysWOW64. That makes troubleshooting harder and can cause the wrong application to load the wrong file.

If the application installer originally placed the DLL beside the executable, restore it through the installer’s repair or verification process. Manual copying is appropriate only when the source is a verified file from the application’s official package or a documented developer deployment.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The name System32 is confusing on 64-bit Windows:

  • System32 contains 64-bit system binaries.
  • SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries.

A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL. Copying a 32-bit file into System32 does not convert it into a 64-bit file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Many older Direct3D 9 games are 32-bit applications. Their runtime files should normally be installed by the game or its setup program in the game’s own folder.

To check the Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Look at System type.

To identify an application’s architecture, check the vendor’s documentation or use a trusted executable inspection tool. Avoid guessing based only on the folder name.

If a program reports that a DLL is invalid, not designed to run on Windows or has a bad image, suspect an architecture mismatch or corrupted file. Repair the application rather than moving the file between Windows system folders.

Fix 6: Investigate a missing dependency

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that d3dx9d_24.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load one of that DLL’s dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft discusses this distinction in its DLL troubleshooting guidance.

A dependency problem is more likely when:

  • The file exists beside the application executable.
  • The error says the DLL is not designed to run on Windows.
  • The file was recently replaced.
  • The application was copied from another computer.
  • The error changes after installing a runtime package.
  • Several related DLLs are missing.

The safe response is to repair the application and install only the official runtime package named by the application or vendor. Avoid downloading individual dependency files from random websites.

Visual C++ Redistributable packages normally do not fix D3DX errors. They provide C and C++ runtime libraries. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable when the error names a file such as msvcp*.dll, msvcr*.dll or vcruntime*.dll, not merely because a DirectX DLL is missing.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They are not the normal source for an optional application-specific D3DX debug DLL, but they are useful when the computer has broader corruption symptoms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM before SFC.

Run DISM

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.
  3. Restart Windows.

The process can pause at a percentage for a while. Do not close the window unless it reports an error.

Run System File Checker

After restarting:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test the affected application.

Possible results include:

  • No integrity violations were found.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but could not repair some of them.

If DISM or SFC reports repaired files, test the program again. If both commands complete successfully but d3dx9d_24.dll remains missing, repair the application. These commands do not normally install a private debug DLL that belongs to a game.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying what changed rarely solves an application-specific missing file.

When manually working through DISM, SFC and Windows component repair feels too uncertain, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention before its full version performs repairs. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Check Windows Update and optional Windows features

Windows Update usually does not install a missing legacy D3DX debug library. It services Windows itself, while old D3DX components are installed through DirectX setup or the application installer.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.

Some older games also rely on legacy Windows features such as DirectPlay. Enabling DirectPlay can help when the game fails with a separate legacy compatibility error, but it does not manufacture d3dx9d_24.dll.

To check optional features:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Open it.
  4. Expand Legacy Components.
  5. Select DirectPlay if the affected game’s documentation requires it.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Test the game again.

Do not enable unrelated Windows features merely because a D3DX error appears. Match the feature to the application’s documented requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 9: Update or reinstall the graphics driver

A graphics-driver update is not the primary fix for a missing d3dx9d_24.dll. Consider it when the DLL is present but the application crashes with Direct3D errors, reports device initialization failures or shows graphics corruption.

Check the graphics adapter

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Note the graphics adapter name.
  5. Right-click the adapter.
  6. Select Properties.
  7. Select the Driver tab.
  8. Review the provider, date and version.

For a normal update:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the graphics adapter.
  2. Select Update driver.
  3. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  4. Install a driver if Windows finds one.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application.

For a clean vendor installation, obtain the driver from the graphics manufacturer’s official support page. Select the correct Windows version and architecture, then follow that installer’s clean-install option if provided.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the adapter.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Open the Driver tab.
  6. Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
  7. Restart Windows.

Do not remove the display adapter unless you have a replacement driver ready and understand how Windows will reinstall it.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually comparing graphics-driver versions across hardware vendors can be tedious, especially when several driver packages appear current. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the system and identify outdated drivers, while the full version handles installation; it is optional, and a graphics-driver change will not replace a debug DLL that belongs to a specific application.

Fix 10: Locate existing copies with PowerShell

If you need to determine whether Windows already has a copy of the file, open PowerShell and run:

Get-ChildItem "$env:windir\System32","$env:windir\SysWOW64" `
  -Filter d3dx9d_24.dll -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
  Select-Object FullName,Length,LastWriteTime

This command checks the two standard Windows folders. It does not search every application folder.

To search the affected application directory, replace the path with the folder containing the game:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Get-ChildItem "C:\Path\To\Game" `
-Filter d3dx9d_24.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
  Select-Object FullName,Length,LastWriteTime

If a copy exists in the application folder, do not assume it is valid. A file can exist and still fail because it is corrupt, incompatible or missing a dependency.

To inspect a known file:

Get-FileHash "C:\Path\To\d3dx9d_24.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:\Path\To\d3dx9d_24.dll"

Use the results for comparison with a trusted vendor-provided copy. There is no universal hash that should be invented or assumed for every copy of this legacy file.

Why regsvr32 does not fix this error

Do not run:

regsvr32 d3dx9d_24.dll

D3DX runtime libraries are loaded by the application. They are not normally COM or ActiveX components that need registration.

Microsoft documents that regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. See Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation and DllRegisterServer documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A failed regsvr32 command can produce an additional error without repairing the original problem.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Avoid websites that offer individual copies of d3dx9d_24.dll.

Those downloads can contain:

  • Malware or tampered code.
  • The wrong D3DX release.
  • The wrong architecture.
  • A retail DLL renamed as a debug DLL.
  • A file with incompatible dependencies.
  • A copy intended for a different application.

Renaming d3dx9_24.dll to d3dx9d_24.dll does not turn a retail library into a debug library. Renaming d3dx9d_43.dll or another D3DX release does not make it compatible either.

Use these sources instead:

Common causes and the correct fix

Cause What to do
The application never installed its private debug DLL Verify, repair or reinstall the application
Antivirus or cleanup software removed the file Check Protection History, then repair from the trusted installer
The program requests debug D3DX but only retail DirectX was installed Obtain the matching application or developer runtime
The error actually names d3dx9_24.dll Install the official June 2010 DirectX runtime
The DLL has the wrong architecture Use the architecture required by the executable and keep the file in the application-managed location
A dependency of the DLL is missing Use dependency analysis and repair the application or required official runtime
Windows has broader corruption Run DISM, then SFC
The program has graphics-device errors after the DLL issue is resolved Update or reinstall the graphics driver
The user profile or game configuration is damaged Back up and reset the application profile
The file may have been tampered with Run a full security scan and reinstall from a trusted source

What “module not found” really means

Windows loader messages are not always precise. “The specified module could not be found” can mean:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The named DLL is absent.
  2. The DLL exists but is in the wrong folder.
  3. The application cannot load one of its dependencies.
  4. The DLL has the wrong architecture.
  5. The file is damaged.
  6. A required runtime is missing.
  7. Security software blocked or removed the file.

That is why copying a file into a system folder is a poor first response. Start with the application installer, exact filename and file location.

Should you copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64

Usually, no.

If a game or application ships a private D3DX runtime, the preferred location is generally the application’s own installation folder. The installer or launcher should manage it there.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 do not mean what their names suggest. System32 contains 64-bit system binaries, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. A 32-bit game generally needs a 32-bit DLL, but placing that DLL in a system folder does not guarantee that the game will load it.

Avoid copying an unverified DLL into both folders. It can create conflicts and affect applications other than the one showing the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you install Visual C++ Redistributable

Not for this error alone.

Visual C++ Redistributable packages provide Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. They do not provide D3DX9 debug libraries.

Install Visual C++ only if the error names a Visual C++ runtime file such as:

msvcp140.dll
msvcr100.dll
vcruntime140.dll

Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads and choose the architecture required by the application.

Should you update Windows

Install pending updates when Windows has other problems, but do not expect Windows Update to supply this optional legacy debug component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Windows update can improve system compatibility or repair protected components, but an application-specific d3dx9d_24.dll request normally requires the application’s own package or a matching developer runtime.

Should you use System Restore

System Restore is a late fallback, not the normal fix.

Use it only if:

  • The file worked before.
  • You know approximately when the problem began.
  • A suitable restore point exists.
  • You understand that later applications, drivers and settings may be affected.

To open System Restore:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs.
  7. Start the restore if the consequences are acceptable.
  8. Test the application after Windows restarts.

Microsoft provides additional System Restore guidance.

If the application itself was installed after the restore point, reinstall it afterward. System Restore is not a substitute for repairing the program that owns the missing DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When malware should be considered

A missing DLL does not automatically indicate malware. Antivirus quarantine, cleanup utilities, failed updates and incomplete installations can all remove or damage application files.

Consider a security investigation when:

  • The file appeared in an unexpected folder.
  • The application was downloaded from an untrusted source.
  • Windows Security reports a detection.
  • The file has suspicious metadata or a failed signature.
  • Several unrelated programs suddenly lose DLLs.
  • The computer shows other signs of tampering.

Run a full scan in Windows Security and reinstall the affected application from its legitimate source. Do not add a broad antivirus exclusion merely to permit an unknown DLL.

What information to collect if the problem remains

If you need help from the software vendor or an administrator, collect:

  • The exact error text.
  • The exact filename, including whether it contains the final d.
  • The name and installation path of the application.
  • Whether the application came from Steam, Epic, EA, another launcher or standalone media.
  • Whether file verification completed successfully.
  • Whether d3dx9d_24.dll exists beside the executable.
  • The Windows edition and system type.
  • The graphics adapter name.
  • Any Windows Security Protection History entry.
  • The result of DISM and SFC.
  • Whether the error changes after reinstalling the application.

This information separates a missing retail DirectX component from an application that was deliberately built against the debug runtime.

FAQ

Is d3dx9d_24.dll a Windows system file

No. It is an optional legacy DirectX 9 D3DX debug-runtime component, not a core Windows Direct3D file.

What does the final d mean

The final d identifies a debug build. It is not a Windows version indicator.

Can I replace d3dx9d_24.dll with d3dx9_24.dll

No. The retail and debug libraries are different builds. Installing or renaming the retail file does not make it a debug runtime.

Does the June 2010 DirectX package install d3dx9d_24.dll

Do not assume that it does. The package is the correct path for retail D3DX files such as d3dx9_24.dll. A literal d3dx9d_24.dll request normally requires the application’s matching debug runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I rename another D3DX file

No. The suffix identifies a side-by-side release, and renaming does not change the file’s exports or behavior.

Will Windows Update fix the error

Usually not. Windows Update services Windows, while legacy D3DX components are installed by DirectX setup, application installers or developer packages.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it

Normally no. Visual C++ packages provide C and C++ runtime libraries, not D3DX9 debug libraries.

Should I run regsvr32

No. D3DX runtime files are normally loaded by the application and do not need COM registration.

Where should a valid copy reside

Prefer the application’s own installation folder when the vendor ships the DLL privately. Let the official installer or launcher place and repair it.

Why does the message say the module is missing when the file exists

The named file may have a missing dependency, wrong architecture or corruption. The message does not always identify the exact missing binary.

Can a graphics-driver update fix it

Only conditionally. Driver updates can help with later graphics-device errors, but they do not normally restore a missing application-specific debug DLL.

What is the safest first action

If the filename is exactly d3dx9d_24.dll, verify or repair the affected application. If the filename is d3dx9_24.dll, install Microsoft’s official legacy DirectX runtime.
