No—the desktop GeForce RTX 5050 is not a worthwhile upgrade from the RTX 4060. In conventional gaming, the two cards are broadly tied, with independent testing often placing the RTX 4060 slightly ahead. The RTX 5050’s real advantages are newer Blackwell features, including DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation, PCIe 5.0, and a newer NVENC encoder—not substantially higher native gaming performance.

For a new build, the RTX 5050 can make sense if it is meaningfully cheaper than an RTX 4060 or if DLSS 4 is important to you. At similar prices, the RTX 4060 is usually the better choice for traditional FPS per dollar. Both cards have the same major weakness: 8GB of VRAM.

Nvidia’s official specifications list the RTX 5050 with 2,560 CUDA cores, 8GB of GDDR6, 320GB/s of bandwidth, PCIe 5.0, a 130W total graphics power rating, DLSS 4 support, and ninth-generation NVENC. The RTX 4060 launched as an Ada Lovelace card with DLSS 3 and eighth-generation NVENC. (Nvidia RTX 5050 specifications; Nvidia RTX 4060 launch details)

The specification sheet therefore looks favorable to the newer card in bandwidth, ray tracing, AI hardware, and media features. But the RTX 4060 has more CUDA cores, and specifications alone do not determine gaming performance. The 5050’s newer architecture does not automatically make it faster.

Gaming performance: neither card is a meaningful upgrade over the other

1080p rasterized gaming

In ordinary rasterized rendering—the conventional frames your GPU renders without ray tracing or generated frames—the RTX 5050 is generally an RTX 4060-class product. Tom’s Hardware found the cards essentially tied in its 1080p raster test suite, while other early testing summarized by the publication placed the 5050 about 7% behind the 4060. TechSpot similarly characterizes it as a slightly slower RTX 4060 rather than a genuine performance upgrade.

A sensible expectation is that the RTX 5050 will perform within the RTX 4060’s margin of error in many games, with the 4060 often a little faster. A particular game, driver version, CPU limitation, or factory-overclocked model can reverse that result, but a small game-specific win is not enough to establish a general advantage.

A 3–7% difference is also not a meaningful upgrade in practical play. Frame-rate variation between games, settings, and scenes is usually larger than that.

1440p gaming

Both cards are primarily 1080p GPUs. They can handle 1440p with sensible settings and upscaling, but neither is an ideal long-term 1440p purchase—especially in demanding games with ray tracing or high-resolution textures.

At 1440p, the shared 8GB framebuffer becomes more important. Average FPS may look acceptable while texture streaming, stutter, or 1% lows deteriorate. Reducing texture quality, ray-tracing settings, and output resolution can help, but the RTX 5050 does not solve the underlying memory limitation.

Ray-traced gaming

The RTX 5050 has fourth-generation ray-tracing cores compared with the RTX 4060’s third-generation hardware. That gives it a feature-generation advantage, but not necessarily a large aggregate performance lead. Tom’s Hardware’s combined raster and ray-tracing assessment still placed the 5050 only slightly behind the 4060 overall.

Ray tracing also increases VRAM use and reduces the base frame rate. On either card, DLSS and carefully selected RT settings are usually more important than the difference between the two GPUs.

Does DLSS 4 make the RTX 5050 faster?

It makes the RTX 5050 more capable in supported games, but it does not make its underlying GPU performance faster.

The RTX 4060 supports the Ada-era DLSS 3 feature set, including upscaling and regular Frame Generation. The RTX 5050 supports newer Blackwell features, including DLSS 4 and Multi-Frame Generation. The exact features available depend on the game, driver, and software configuration; “DLSS 4” should not be treated as a universal performance guarantee.

  • Raster performance: conventionally rendered frames. The 5050 is roughly tied with or slightly behind the 4060.
  • DLSS Super Resolution: the game renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image. It can improve performance on both cards.
  • Frame Generation: AI-generated frames are inserted between traditionally rendered frames. The displayed FPS can rise, but input response does not improve as much as it would with an equivalent increase in rendered frames.
  • Multi-Frame Generation: supported Blackwell cards can generate multiple frames between rendered frames in compatible games.

Generated frames do not fix low base FPS, CPU bottlenecks, stutter, or VRAM exhaustion. Tom’s Hardware found demanding cases where Multi-Frame Generation was unavailable or impractical because the 5050’s 8GB framebuffer was already heavily occupied. (Tom’s Hardware RTX 5050 conclusion and MFG testing)

Choose the RTX 5050 for DLSS 4 if you have specific games that support the feature and understand the trade-off. Do not use a high generated-frame counter as proof that the 5050 is a faster gaming GPU than the RTX 4060.

Is 8GB of VRAM enough?

It depends on the game, resolution, and settings:

  • 1080p esports and older games: generally adequate.
  • 1080p high or ultra in newer AAA games: often workable, but textures, ray tracing, or 1% lows may need adjustment.
  • 1440p: possible with upscaling and reduced settings, but neither card is a strong longevity choice.
  • Heavy ray tracing, high-resolution textures, mods, and simulation games: 8GB can become a serious constraint.

VRAM limitations do not always appear as a low average-FPS result. They can show up as texture pop-in, inconsistent frame pacing, hitching, poor 1% lows, or settings that cannot be enabled without stutter. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is one example cited by Tom’s Hardware where 16GB of VRAM is valuable even at 1080p. That does not mean every modern game fails on 8GB; it means the compromise is becoming more common in demanding titles.

The RTX 5050 is therefore not more future-proof simply because it is newer. Both cards have 8GB of VRAM and a 128-bit memory bus.

Power efficiency, thermals, and compatibility

The RTX 4060 generally wins efficiency. Nvidia lists the RTX 5050 at 130W total graphics power, while the RTX 4060 is commonly specified in the 115W class. Tom’s Hardware also found the 5050 slightly less efficient in testing. Newer architecture alone does not guarantee lower power consumption.

Both GPUs are suitable for mainstream gaming systems and are commonly paired with a quality 550W power supply. Check the exact manufacturer requirement for the specific card, especially with factory-overclocked models. Partner-card designs can differ in power limits, cooler size, noise, boost behavior, and connector placement.

The RTX 5050’s PCIe 5.0 x8 interface is newer than the RTX 4060’s PCIe 4.0 x8 interface, but it is not a meaningful speed advantage on a suitable modern platform. An older PCIe 3.0 system deserves more care because an x8 link can be more sensitive to platform bandwidth, although the practical impact depends on the game and system.

For a small-form-factor build, compare the exact card’s length, height, thickness, cooler, and power connector. The GPU name is not enough to determine case compatibility.

Price and value: the cheaper card wins only by enough

The RTX 5050 launched at a $249 starting price, while the RTX 4060 launched at $299. Those figures are useful context, not guaranteed current prices. New, used, clearance, regional, and partner-card pricing can vary substantially, so compare the exact model, warranty, shipping, tax, and return policy before buying.

Price situation Better choice Why
5050 and 4060 cost the same RTX 4060 Usually slightly better conventional gaming performance
5050 is $10–$20 cheaper Usually RTX 4060 The discount is rarely enough to offset the performance difference
5050 is $30–$50 cheaper RTX 5050 can be reasonable It becomes a viable new 1080p card, especially if DLSS 4 matters
Used 4060 is substantially cheaper RTX 4060 Potentially better value if condition, warranty, and returns are acceptable
5050 approaches RTX 5060 pricing RTX 5060 or another faster card The 5050’s raw performance becomes difficult to justify

Tom’s Hardware found the RTX 5060 meaningfully faster than the RTX 5050 for a relatively modest increase in its review pricing context. It also reported the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB as substantially faster at a nearby price. Both observations are market- and date-sensitive, so check prices when you purchase rather than relying on launch MSRP.

Who should buy each card?

Already own an RTX 4060

Keep the RTX 4060. Moving to the RTX 5050 is a sidegrade or slight downgrade in conventional gaming. DLSS 4 and newer encoding features may justify a change for a specific workflow, but not as a general gaming upgrade.

Replacing a GTX 10-series, GTX 16-series, or RTX 3050

The RTX 5050 can be a substantial upgrade from these older or slower cards, particularly for 1080p gaming. Compare it with the RTX 5060, RX 9060 XT, and Arc B580 before purchasing because a competing card may deliver more raster performance or VRAM for similar money.

Building a new 1080p PC with a strict $250 ceiling

The RTX 5050 is a sensible candidate if it is close to its $249 launch price, the card fits your case, and you want Nvidia features. It is not automatically the best value, however. A discounted RTX 4060 may be faster, while an AMD or Intel alternative may offer more conventional performance or VRAM.

Streaming or creating video

The RTX 5050’s ninth-generation NVENC and newer Blackwell media hardware may make it preferable for workflows that specifically benefit from those capabilities. Confirm support in the applications you use. If your software depends on CUDA, Nvidia Broadcast, or other Nvidia-specific features, an AMD or Intel alternative may be less suitable despite potentially stronger gaming value.

Buying for 1440p longevity

Neither the RTX 5050 nor RTX 4060 is an ideal long-term 1440p choice. Save for a faster card and, where possible, more than 8GB of VRAM. The extra money is more likely to improve smoothness and reduce future compromises than switching between these two GPUs.

Alternatives worth checking before you buy

  • GeForce RTX 5060: the more logical Nvidia step-up when the budget allows. Tom’s Hardware measured it around 27% faster than the RTX 5050 at 1080p in its review context, although pricing changes over time.
  • Radeon RX 9060 XT 8GB: an important comparison for buyers focused on rasterized FPS. Tom’s Hardware reported roughly 25% higher average frame rates than the RTX 5050 in its cited price context. It is less suitable if you specifically need DLSS, CUDA, Nvidia Broadcast, or Nvidia’s creator ecosystem.
  • Intel Arc B580: its 12GB of VRAM can be attractive for budget buyers. Independent comparisons have placed it ahead of or close to the RTX 5050 depending on the test suite. Game compatibility and driver behavior are more variable, and it is not the best fit for CUDA-dependent software.

These alternatives should be judged using the games and applications you actually use. Average FPS is only part of the decision; also consider 1% lows, frame pacing, VRAM allocation, upscaling quality, ray-tracing performance, input latency, driver maturity, power, noise, and warranty coverage.

Bottom line

Upgrade from RTX 4060: No. The RTX 5050 is not meaningfully faster and is often slightly slower in traditional gaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

New Nvidia budget purchase: Consider the RTX 5050 only when it is clearly cheaper than an RTX 4060 or when DLSS 4 Multi-Frame Generation and newer media hardware are specifically valuable to you.

Best long-term move: If your budget permits, step up to a faster GPU tier or compare cards with more than 8GB of VRAM. The RTX 5050 is a usable 1080p card, but its newer name does not make it more future-proof.
