The 60-second answer

d3dx9d_39.dll is a legacy DirectX 9 D3DX debug-runtime DLL. It is not a Visual C++ file, a .NET file, a graphics-driver file, or normally a Windows system component.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For the exact filename, start here:

  1. Open the affected game or application launcher.
  2. Use Repair, Verify, Validate, or Scan.
  3. If the launcher has no repair option, reinstall the application from its original publisher or store.
  4. Check Windows Security Protection history in case antivirus quarantined the file.
  5. Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website.
  6. Do not rename d3dx9_39.dll to d3dx9d_39.dll.
  7. Do not copy an untrusted file into System32 or SysWOW64.

There is an important spelling difference:

  • d3dx9d_39.dll is the debug variant.
  • d3dx9_39.dll without the d is the retail D3DX9 runtime variant.

Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime packages are appropriate for missing retail D3DX components, but Microsoft does not state on those download pages that they install this exact debug DLL. The DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer and DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 package add optional legacy DirectX components alongside the version already built into Windows.

What d3dx9d_39.dll actually is

The file belongs to the older D3DX9 portion of the DirectX SDK. Microsoft describes D3DX as an optional, side-by-side component rather than part of the core Direct3D runtime. Microsoft also documents separate debug-runtime files that developers can deploy from the DirectX SDK’s Developer Runtime\<architecture> directory.

msi Gaming GeForce GT 1030 4GB DDR4 64-bit HDCP Support DirectX 12 DP/HDMI Single Fan OC Graphics Card (GT 1030 4GD4 LP OC)
  • Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
  • Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
  • Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
  • Memory Interface: 64-bit
  • Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1

The d in the filename is consistent with a debug runtime. Public file inventories commonly label this file as Debug, but Microsoft does not provide an official per-file manifest confirming a universal version, size, hash, or architecture for every copy. Those details should not be used to select a replacement.

A consumer game may install the DLL next to its own executable. That is often the correct location because Windows searches the application directory before normal system locations under its DLL search order.

This is why the file often does not belong in:

  • C:\Windows\System32
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64
  • a global Windows folder chosen by trial and error

The application that installed the file normally owns the correct copy, architecture, and version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify the exact problem

Before installing anything, answer these questions:

  • Does the message say d3dx9d_39.dll, or does it say d3dx9_39.dll without the d?
  • Does only one game or application fail?
  • Did the problem begin after an update, repair, move, uninstall, or file verification?
  • Is the program an old consumer game, a developer build, or an internal test tool?
  • Does the error say missing, not found, could not be loaded, procedure entry point, or not designed to run on Windows?
  • Is the file present in the application folder?
  • Did Microsoft Defender or another antivirus program quarantine it?
  • Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit?

Do not skip the spelling check. Installing the retail DirectX package will not necessarily restore a debug DLL, and a retail file cannot safely be renamed to impersonate the debug file.

Fix 1: Verify or repair the affected application

This is the most likely fix when the exact filename is d3dx9d_39.dll.

A damaged extraction, incomplete update, disk error, manual deletion, or failed patch can remove an application-local DLL. Repairing the application restores the copy selected by its publisher.

Steam

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Select Installed Files.
  6. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for the process to finish.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Launch the game from Steam.

If Steam reports that files were reacquired, test the game again. If the file disappears immediately after verification, check antivirus quarantine before repeating the process.

Other launchers

Look for an option named:

  • Repair
  • Verify
  • Verify files
  • Validate
  • Scan and repair
  • Manage installation

The exact menu differs between launchers. The usual pattern is:

  1. Open the launcher.
  2. Open your library.
  3. Select the game’s menu button.
  4. Open Manage, Properties, or Settings.
  5. Choose Repair, Verify, or Scan.
  6. Wait for the launcher to replace damaged files.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Start the application normally.

Applications without a repair option

If the original program has no verification tool:

  1. Open Settings with Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Uninstall, if a clean reinstall is required.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Reinstall using the original installer, publisher, or store.
  9. Start the program from its normal shortcut or launcher.

If you can repair the installation without uninstalling it, prefer that option first. If reinstalling produces the same missing file, the package itself may be defective, antivirus may be removing the file, or the application may have been built against a debug runtime that its vendor failed to include.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

A missing debug DLL can be unusual because it is old and may be bundled with a game. That does not prove that an antivirus detection is incorrect. Review the individual detection before restoring anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the application.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Find the event involving the game or d3dx9d_39.dll.
  7. Expand the event.
  8. Check the original file path and detection details.
  9. Restore the file only if the application came from a trusted publisher and you have established that the detection is false.

Microsoft explains the available actions in Protection History.

After restoring the file, verify the application again through its launcher. This gives you a clean copy from the publisher instead of relying on a manually restored file.

Do not disable antivirus protection simply to download a DLL. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, contact the application vendor and provide the detection name, original path, and application version.

Fix 3: If the filename is actually d3dx9_39.dll

If the error names d3dx9_39.dll without the d, the retail DirectX End-User Runtime is the appropriate Microsoft package to try.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Microsoft web installer

  1. Open the official DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer.
  2. Download dxwebsetup.exe.
  3. Open your Downloads folder.
  4. Right-click the installer.
  5. Select Run as administrator.
  6. Follow the setup screens.
  7. Allow the installer to complete.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Launch the affected application.

This package adds legacy side-by-side components. It does not upgrade DirectX 12 or replace the core DirectX version built into Windows.

Use the offline June 2010 package

Use the offline package when the web installer cannot download files or fails during setup.

  1. Open the official DirectX End-User Runtimes June 2010 download.
  2. Download directx_Jun2010_redist.exe.
  3. Create a temporary folder such as C:\DirectXTemp.
  4. Run the downloaded package.
  5. When prompted for an extraction location, select C:\DirectXTemp.
  6. Open that folder.
  7. Right-click DXSETUP.exe.
  8. Select Run as administrator.
  9. Complete the installation.
  10. Restart Windows.
  11. Test the application again.

The offline package contains the legacy runtime files needed by many older games, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed installer for the exact debug filename d3dx9d_39.dll.

If DirectX setup reports an internal error

Check these files after the failure:

%WINDIR%\DXError.log
%WINDIR%\DirectX.log

In File Explorer, paste each path into the address bar and press Enter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s legacy DirectX installation notes identify possible causes including antivirus interference, disabled Cryptographic Services, damaged cabinet files, and temporary-file problems. Try the offline package, confirm that the system drive has free space, and ensure that Cryptographic Services is running:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Cryptographic Services.
  5. Confirm that its status is Running.
  6. If it is stopped, right-click it and select Start.
  7. Try DXSETUP.exe again.

Do not delete the DirectX logs before recording the error. They can help the application vendor or Microsoft support identify the failure.

Fix 4: Check the application folder and architecture

A 32-bit program needs a 32-bit DLL, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A native 64-bit program needs the appropriate 64-bit component. Microsoft’s file system redirector documentation explains why System32 and SysWOW64 do not mean what their names appear to suggest:

  • System32 is the native 64-bit system directory on 64-bit Windows.
  • SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows.

Do not copy files between those directories just because the application error names a DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect the application location:

  1. Right-click the game or application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Select the Shortcut tab.
  4. Note the path in Target.
  5. Select Open File Location, if available.
  6. Look beside the application executable for the DLL.

A 32-bit application is often installed under C:\Program Files (x86), while a 64-bit application is often under C:\Program Files. This is only a clue, not proof.

Use the copy supplied by the application or its matching developer package. Prefer application-local deployment when the program was designed to use a private DLL. Do not replace an existing file merely because the filename matches.

Fix 5: Diagnose a file that exists but will not load

A present DLL can still be unusable. Different messages point to different problems.

“The specified module could not be found”

This can mean either the named DLL is missing or one of its dependencies is missing. Windows loads the named file and then resolves its dependency chain using its DLL search rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try this order:

  1. Verify the application installation.
  2. Check whether another DLL error appears after repair.
  3. Install prerequisites supplied by the application vendor.
  4. Confirm the program’s architecture.
  5. Remove manually copied DLLs that came from untrusted sources.
  6. Reinstall the application from the original source.

Installing only d3dx9d_39.dll may not fix a missing Visual C++ runtime, another DirectX component, or a game-specific dependency.

“The procedure entry point could not be located”

This usually indicates a version mismatch. The program found a DLL with the expected name, but the file does not export the function that the application expects.

Use the application’s repair or verification function. Do not overwrite it with a file from a different game or rename another D3DX file.

“Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error”

Treat this as a bad-image, corruption, architecture, or version problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the application.
  2. Verify or repair it.
  3. Check antivirus history.
  4. Remove any manually downloaded replacement.
  5. Reinstall from the original source if verification does not help.
  6. Contact the vendor if the same defective file is restored.

Fix 6: Enable Legacy Components only when the game requires them

Some older programs require the Windows Legacy Components feature, particularly DirectPlay. Enabling DirectPlay does not install d3dx9d_39.dll, but it can resolve a separate startup failure in an old game.

Only enable it when the application documentation or error clearly indicates that it needs the feature.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand Legacy Components.
  5. Select DirectPlay.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Allow Windows to apply the change.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Test the game again.

If Legacy Components or DirectPlay is not listed, do not download replacement feature files. Continue with application repair or contact the vendor.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are useful when multiple Windows features are malfunctioning, but they are not normal installers for an application-local d3dx9d_39.dll.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Terminal.
  3. Right-click Windows Terminal.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the application.

Possible SFC results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files were not found to be damaged.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the result, restart, and consider System Restore or Windows repair options.

Do not expect SFC to restore a game-local debug DLL. If the only failing program is one old game, return to application verification.

If repeatedly hunting through Windows repair commands is the problem, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that program.

Fix 8: Update or reinstall the graphics driver only for broader graphics problems

A graphics driver can cause Direct3D initialization failures, rendering problems, crashes, or black screens. It does not normally create a missing application-local debug DLL.

Use this fix when the application also shows symptoms such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Multiple games failing to initialize graphics
  • Recent driver-related crashes
  • Display corruption
  • Device Manager reporting a graphics-device error
  • A problem beginning immediately after a driver update

  7. Check Device status.
  8. Open the Driver tab.
  9. Note the provider, date, and version.

To update through Windows:

  1. Right-click the graphics adapter.
  2. Select Update driver.
  3. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  4. Install a driver if Windows finds one.
  5. Restart the computer.

To reinstall the current driver:

  1. Right-click the adapter in Device Manager.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Do not select an option to remove driver software unless the manufacturer or support instructions specifically require it.
  4. Select Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Open Device Manager again.
  7. Select Action.
  8. Select Scan for hardware changes.

For a clean vendor driver, use the graphics manufacturer’s official support process. Avoid driver download archives.

Driver version hunting can be tedious when several devices have stale or mismatched packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan the system and show which drivers need attention; its free scan identifies the issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version. This remains a secondary step when the specific missing file belongs to one game.

Fix 9: Scan for malware when the file disappeared unexpectedly

The filename alone is not evidence of malware. Scan when the file vanished unexpectedly, appears outside the expected application folder, or other suspicious behavior is present.

For a Microsoft Defender scan:

  1. Open Windows Security from Start.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.
  6. Allow the scan to complete.

Microsoft also documents Defender Offline scanning in Virus and threat protection. Use it when malware may be active during normal Windows operation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If malware is found, do not restore the DLL until the system and application source have been checked.

Fix 10: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can reverse recent software, driver, or configuration changes without normally affecting personal files.

Use it when the application worked recently and the problem began after a driver, security product, system configuration, or software change.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Recovery.
  3. Open Recovery.
  4. Select Open System Restore.
  5. Select Next.
  6. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  7. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  8. Review the affected software and drivers.
  9. Select Close.
  10. Select Next.
  11. Select Finish.
  12. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore will not correct a defective game package. If the same application installation restores the same missing debug dependency, contact the vendor.

Why regsvr32 is usually wrong here

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. Microsoft documents it for registering DLLs that expose registration entry points, typically certain COM or ActiveX components.

A DirectX runtime DLL is not repaired by registering it. Running a command such as this is not a valid routine fix:

regsvr32 d3dx9d_39.dll

It may produce an error because the file does not expose the registration function that regsvr32 expects. Do not use it for this missing-file problem unless the application vendor specifically identifies a separate registration issue and supplies the correct file and command.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Generic DLL download pages are a poor repair source because they may provide:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The wrong architecture
  • An incompatible version
  • A modified or malicious file
  • A file copied from a different application
  • A replacement that hides the real dependency problem

The safer sources are:

  • The affected application’s repair or verification feature
  • The original publisher or store installer
  • Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime for the retail d3dx9_39.dll
  • The legacy DirectX SDK for developers who genuinely need debug-runtime files

Never rename d3dx9_39.dll to d3dx9d_39.dll. The names refer to different runtime components.

Developer and internal-test applications

If the failing program is a developer build, debug build, or internal test tool, the vendor may intentionally require the DirectX SDK debug runtime.

Microsoft’s DirectX SDK download describes the SDK as legacy and end-of-life. A developer should use the matching SDK and architecture, then deploy the required files according to Microsoft’s DirectX installation guidance for game developers.

For a developer-owned application:

  1. Identify whether the executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Install the matching legacy SDK in a controlled development environment.
  3. Locate the appropriate Developer Runtime\<architecture> files.
  4. Deploy them beside the executable only when the build requires them.
  5. Prefer rebuilding against a release runtime before distributing the application.
  6. Test the package on a clean Windows installation.

Do not casually copy debug files into a final consumer product. If a commercial game requires d3dx9d_39.dll, its publisher should provide the correct application-local file or a corrected build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Special case: a RUNDLL error after uninstalling software

A RUNDLL message can appear after software removal when a startup entry, scheduled task, or uninstall reference still points to a deleted DLL.

This is different from a game startup error.

Do not restore d3dx9d_39.dll blindly. Instead:

  1. Note the full path and command shown in the message.
  2. Check which application previously owned that path.
  3. Review Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  4. Check Task Manager → Startup apps.
  5. Check Task Scheduler for an entry belonging to the removed software.
  6. Reinstall and uninstall the owning application cleanly if necessary.

Restoring an orphaned DLL can revive unwanted software rather than repair Windows.

When to contact the application vendor

Contact the vendor after recording:

  • The exact error text
  • The application name and edition
  • The full executable path
  • The launcher used
  • Whether the executable is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition
  • Whether verification restored the file
  • Whether antivirus quarantined it
  • Whether the file is present in the application folder
  • Any DXError.log or DirectX.log result
  • Whether another dependency fails afterward

Escalate when:

  • Reinstalling restores the same missing file
  • Antivirus removes the file every time
  • The file is present but produces a bad-image error
  • The application depends on a debug runtime that was not packaged
  • The launcher repairs a different executable than the one you are starting
  • Every other program works and only this application fails

That pattern usually indicates an incorrectly packaged application rather than a missing Windows feature.

Frequently asked questions

Is d3dx9d_39.dll a Windows system file?

Not normally. It is a legacy DirectX 9 D3DX debug-runtime component. A game or application may install it beside its executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will DirectX 12 fix this error?

Not necessarily. Modern DirectX is built into Windows, while legacy D3DX components are installed side by side. DirectX 12 does not automatically supply every older D3DX debug file.

Should I install Visual C++?

Not for this filename alone. Visual C++ runtimes may be required by the application for another dependency, but d3dx9d_39.dll belongs to the legacy DirectX D3DX family.

Should I copy the file into System32?

Usually no. The application directory is often the correct location, and copying an untrusted DLL globally can create architecture and version conflicts.

What if I have 64-bit Windows?

A 32-bit game still needs a 32-bit DLL. Windows architecture and application architecture are separate. Use the copy supplied by the application or matching runtime package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use d3dx9_39.dll instead?

No. The retail file without the d and the debug file with the d are different components. Do not rename one to create the other.

Why did reinstalling DirectX not help?

You may have installed the retail package for a debug filename, or the missing copy may belong in the game folder. Recheck the spelling and verify the application.

Why did reinstalling the game not help?

Antivirus may remove the file after installation, the launcher may restore a defective package, or the application may depend on a debug runtime that its publisher failed to ship.

Will sfc /scannow restore this DLL?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. It is not a normal installer for an application-local DirectX debug binary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I update my graphics driver?

Only when the symptoms also indicate a graphics or Direct3D driver problem. A driver update does not normally create a missing application-local DLL.

Is the file malware?

The filename alone does not establish that. Check its location, publisher, application source, antivirus detection, and the application’s installation history.

What is the safest fix?

For the exact d3dx9d_39.dll filename, verify or repair the affected application, then reinstall it from the original source if necessary. For d3dx9_39.dll without the d, use Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime package.
