What this file actually does
dae.dll is associated with the Digidesign Audio Engine, or DAE. DAE is the real-time audio engine used by Pro Tools for recording, playback, processing, and automation.

What the error usually means
The most direct message is:
This application has failed to start because DAE.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
Pro Tools may also display:
DAE could not be found
That message can indicate a missing DAE folder, missing DAE application, or incorrectly named DAE component.

Fix 1: Identify the exact Pro Tools installation
Before replacing anything, determine which installation owns the missing file. This matters if more than one Pro Tools generation is installed.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the Pro Tools shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the installation folder shown in Start in, if present.
- On the Details tab, check whether Windows displays product or file information.
- Write down the Pro Tools release shown by the shortcut, installer, or application folder.
Do not mix files between separate Pro Tools installations. A newer or older dae.dll may not match the executable, plug-ins, drivers, or installation layout that is requesting it.
Also record:
- Your Windows edition and build
- Whether Windows is 64-bit
- Whether the affected Pro Tools application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The audio interface or hardware in use
- The full error wording
- Any change immediately before the failure
A 64-bit version of Windows can run some 32-bit applications, but that does not make 64-bit and 32-bit Pro Tools components interchangeable.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall Pro Tools from Avid
This is the primary fix when the error names dae.dll itself.
Avid distributes current and legacy Pro Tools installers through the Avid account, Avid Link, and the Avid Download Center, subject to the products available in the account. Use the installer for the same Pro Tools release whenever possible.
Preserve your work first
Before uninstalling:
- Back up Pro Tools sessions and audio files.
- Save installers and license information.
- Back up custom presets and plug-in installers.
- Note the current installation path.
- Close Pro Tools and any Avid background application.
Remove the damaged installation
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for Pro Tools.
- Select the matching entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the installer’s removal instructions.
- Restart Windows.
If the Pro Tools installer includes a repair option, use Repair first. If it does not, uninstalling and reinstalling the same release is the more reliable route.
Install the matching release
- Sign in to your Avid account.
- Open Avid Link or the Avid Download Center.
- Locate the exact Pro Tools version associated with the failed installation.
- Download the Windows installer supplied for that release.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch Pro Tools before restoring third-party plug-ins.
Do not copy a loose dae.dll into the old folder unless Avid support specifically provides a file that matches your release and architecture. The installer restores the DAE component together with the files, permissions, registry entries, drivers, and dependencies that Pro Tools expects.

How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if Pro Tools opens without the DAE message and reaches its normal session or startup screen. If the same message returns immediately, check whether you installed the same release that created the original shortcut. Installing a different generation may leave the application looking for a different DAE layout.
If reinstalling does not help, continue with the checks below rather than trying another downloaded DLL.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file. This is especially relevant if the problem began after a security scan, Windows update, cleanup operation, or restore from backup.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the Pro Tools failure began.
- Expand any detection that refers to Pro Tools, DAE, or the installation directory.
Do not restore an unknown DLL simply because its filename is dae.dll. A file obtained from an unverified source may be malicious or mismatched.
If the quarantined file came directly from a legitimate Avid installer, confirm its provenance and detection details first. Reinstalling Pro Tools from Avid is preferable to restoring a single file. If a verified installation is repeatedly quarantined, submit the file or detection to the security vendor for review instead of broadly disabling protection.
After resolving the detection, reinstall Pro Tools and test it before adding exclusions. If you do create an exclusion, limit it to the verified Pro Tools folder and follow your organization’s security policy.
Fix 4: Determine whether a dependency is missing
Sometimes Windows reports that dae.dll cannot load even though the file is present. The actual failure may involve a dependent runtime, driver, or plug-in.
Read the complete error carefully. If it names one of these, follow the corresponding branch:

- A specific plug-in: plug-in compatibility or corruption
DAE.dllalone: damaged or incomplete Pro Tools installation remains the leading possibility
Microsoft provides current Visual C++ Redistributable packages, including x86 and x64 installers, on its Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
Install a redistributable only when the error identifies a Microsoft runtime or when the Pro Tools release documentation requires it. Choose the architecture appropriate for the application. Installing every available package is not a universal fix for dae.dll.
After installing the runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Pro Tools.
- If the same DAE message remains, repair the Pro Tools installation.
- If a different DLL is now named, troubleshoot that dependency rather than replacing
dae.dll.
Fix 5: Isolate third-party plug-ins
A plug-in can prevent Pro Tools from completing startup and may make the failure look like a DAE problem.

- ADC with 97dB(a) dynamic range, DAC with 107dB(a) dynamic range
- zero latency hardware direct input monitoring activated by switch, master output volume control,
Back up the plug-in folder before changing it. Then:
- Close Pro Tools.
- Locate the Pro Tools plug-in directory used by your release.
- Create a temporary folder outside that directory.
- Move recently installed or updated third-party plug-ins into the temporary folder.
- Start Pro Tools.
- Add plug-ins back in small groups until the failure returns.
If Pro Tools starts with third-party plug-ins removed, the DAE component may be intact. Update, reinstall, or remove the plug-in that causes the failure using the plug-in developer’s supported installer.
Do not mix plug-ins from one Pro Tools generation into another installation. A plug-in compiled for a different application architecture or release can fail during startup.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the audio driver
DAE depends on the surrounding Pro Tools and audio-hardware environment. An incompatible interface driver can prevent the engine from starting even when dae.dll is present.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Locate the audio interface.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver if a compatible driver is available.
- If the problem began after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows.
For a full reinstall, download the driver intended for the exact audio interface and Windows version from its manufacturer. Disconnect the interface if the manufacturer’s instructions require it, uninstall the old package, restart, and install the replacement as administrator.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many hardware-driver versions: its free scan shows what it identifies, while the full version performs the driver installation. Pro Tools and the audio interface manufacturer’s driver remain the authoritative sources for compatibility.
Test Pro Tools with the interface connected and powered on. If it launches only after the interface is disconnected, the driver, firmware, hardware mode, or Pro Tools compatibility is more likely than a missing dae.dll.
Fix 7: Check Pro Tools and Windows compatibility
Legacy Pro Tools releases may depend on older Windows versions, hardware drivers, or installation layouts. A current Windows installation does not prove that an old dae.dll or its parent Pro Tools release is compatible with it.
Check the Pro Tools release against Avid’s compatibility information and the audio interface manufacturer’s requirements. Pay attention to:
- Supported Windows versions and builds
- 32-bit versus 64-bit application support
- Supported interface drivers
- Required firmware
- Plug-in format and architecture
- Whether multiple Pro Tools generations are installed
If the installation was moved manually to another drive or restored from a backup, reinstall it using the original installer instead. Moving only the application folder can omit services, drivers, licensing files, registry data, or dependent components.
Windows compatibility mode may help some older applications open, but it does not rebuild missing DAE files or make incompatible drivers work. Use it only as a controlled test after confirming the release’s requirements.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is a secondary step because dae.dll is not a Windows system file. Use these commands when other Windows applications also fail, Windows reports broader corruption, or the problem followed damage to system components.

Recommended Free Tools
A successful result means Windows found and repaired system files, but it does not prove that dae.dll was repaired. If Pro Tools still reports that DAE is missing, reinstall Pro Tools from Avid.
Repeating SFC and DISM without identifying what changed is unlikely to restore a Pro Tools-specific component. Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process easier by showing what it finds, while its repair functions require the full version; reinstalling Pro Tools remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Pro Tools.

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began directly after a driver installation, Windows change, application update, or other system modification.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
- Select a restore point from before the Pro Tools failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally affects system files, registry settings, and installed programs, not personal documents. It may remove a recently installed driver or application, so reinstall the correct Pro Tools and interface software afterward if necessary.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix dae.dll
Do not run:
regsvr32 dae.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command for application runtime libraries.
Running it against dae.dll may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the file needs a different regsvr32 command. It means registration is not the repair mechanism for this component.
Similarly, do not copy dae.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another Pro Tools version’s directory
- A random folder listed in the system
PATH
Windows DLL search behavior can load an untrusted or incompatible copy from a searched location. Keep application DLLs with the application that owns them.
Do not download dae.dll from DLL websites
Random DLL download sites cannot reliably establish:
- Which Pro Tools release the file came from
- Whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether it matches your executable
- Whether it includes malware or tampering
- Whether it has the correct dependencies
- Whether it came from Digidesign or Avid
Even a genuine-looking replacement may leave the installation broken because the missing component is only one part of the DAE system.
Use the official Avid account, Avid Link, or Avid Download Center to obtain the matching Pro Tools installer. Use Microsoft’s official pages only for Windows components such as Visual C++ packages, DISM, and SFC.

FAQ
Is dae.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the Digidesign Audio Engine installed with Pro Tools and related Digidesign audio products.
Where should dae.dll be located?
The exact path varies by Pro Tools generation. It normally belongs in the Pro Tools installation or its associated DAE directory. There is no single path that applies to every release.
Can I download a replacement dae.dll?
Do not use random DLL download websites. Reinstall the matching Pro Tools release from Avid so the DAE component and its related files are restored together.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Application DLLs should normally remain with their owning application. Copying the file to a Windows system directory can create loading and security problems.
Will regsvr32 repair it?
Usually no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that support COM registration, not ordinary Pro Tools runtime components.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributables?
Only when the error names a Visual C++ dependency such as MSVCP*.dll or MSVCR*.dll, or when the matching Pro Tools documentation requires one. A redistributable is not a universal dae.dll repair.
Why does Pro Tools still fail after I restore the file from quarantine?
The file may be the wrong version, the installation may be incomplete, or a dependency, driver, or plug-in may also be missing. Reinstall the matching Pro Tools release from Avid rather than relying on a single restored DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a 32-bit dae.dll work with 64-bit Pro Tools?
Do not assume so. The application and its components must use compatible architectures. A 64-bit Windows installation can host some 32-bit software, but it does not make 32-bit and 64-bit Pro Tools files interchangeable.
What is the most likely permanent fix?
For an error that names dae.dll at Pro Tools startup, repair or reinstall the exact Pro Tools release that originally installed it, then verify the compatible audio driver and plug-ins.
