When Windows says it is missing or cannot load it, repair or remove the NVIDIA nView component that requested it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
nvwrsel.dll belongs to NVIDIA nView Desktop and Window Manager, an older NVIDIA desktop-management product. nView provided features for managing windows, workspaces, and multiple monitors on systems using NVIDIA graphics hardware.

This is not a Microsoft file. It does not belong to Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Installing a Visual C++ Redistributable or a DirectX package is therefore not the normal repair for this error.
NVIDIA’s newer desktop-management product is RTX Desktop Manager. Legacy nView remains available through the previous-generation software area referenced by NVIDIA, but compatibility depends on the NVIDIA hardware and software release.
Causes of the error by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| “nvwrsel.dll is missing from your computer” immediately after startup | Incomplete nView removal, driver change, or quarantine | Identify the startup caller, then repair or uninstall nView |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The file or one of its dependencies is missing | Reinstall the matching NVIDIA component rather than copying one DLL |
| Error after an NVIDIA driver update or rollback | The old nView component was removed or mismatched | Install the appropriate NVIDIA package or remove the obsolete reference |
| Error after antivirus activity | The file was quarantined or flagged | Check quarantine and verify the original NVIDIA location and signature |
| Error from only one old program | That program or its NVIDIA integration is calling nView | Repair or uninstall the related software |
| Error continues after reinstalling the file | Wrong architecture, mixed versions, missing dependency, or stale startup entry | Find the exact executable loading the file |
| Error follows a cleanup utility | An old shortcut, service, registry entry, or startup item remains | Remove the obsolete reference instead of restoring the DLL |
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is authentic. A file claiming to be NVIDIA should be checked by its location, digital signature, and antivirus results.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 1: Identify what is requesting nvwrsel.dll
Before changing Windows files, find the program that is producing the message. The executable named in the dialog is often more useful than the DLL name.
- Write down the complete error message.
- Note whether it appears during startup, when opening a particular application, or after launching a game.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Note whether the computer uses NVIDIA graphics hardware.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for entries containing:
- NVIDIA nView
- NVIDIA Desktop Manager
- NVIDIA RTX Desktop Manager
- NVIDIA graphics software
- Also check the NVIDIA installation folders under:
text
C:Program FilesNVIDIA Corporation - Look for old nView-related files or folders, including
nvwiz.exeandnViewSetup.exe.
To check startup entries:
- Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for NVIDIA, nView, desktop manager, or an entry whose Startup impact and publisher information indicate an old NVIDIA component.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Properties.
- Inspect the file path before disabling it.
If the error names a particular executable, search for that program in Settings → Apps → Installed apps. If the executable belongs to a game or launcher, use that program’s own repair or verify-files feature before repairing Windows.
A message stating that the “specified module could not be found” does not always mean nvwrsel.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to find a dependency that the DLL needs. Reinstalling the owning NVIDIA component restores the correct group of files and dependencies together.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have quarantined the file, especially if an old driver package was partially updated or the file was found outside its expected directory.
Windows Security
- Open Start and type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with the NVIDIA nView folder.
- Do not restore it solely because the filename is
nvwrsel.dll. - First verify that:
- the original path was an NVIDIA installation directory;
- the file has a valid NVIDIA digital signature;
- the detection is identified as a false positive by your security provider.
If the file is confirmed as an authentic NVIDIA component, restore it only through the security product’s normal recovery process. If its origin is unclear, leave it quarantined and reinstall the software from NVIDIA’s official driver or desktop-management source.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to run an unknown DLL. If a suspicious copy exists in a temporary folder, a download folder, or a random application directory, treat it as untrusted and run a security scan.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the NVIDIA component
This is the most likely working fix when nvwrsel.dll was removed, corrupted, or mismatched.
Repair through Installed apps
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for nView, NVIDIA Desktop Manager, or the relevant NVIDIA desktop-management entry.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application that produced the error.
If a Repair option is available, use it first. If there is no repair option, uninstall the obsolete nView component and install the correct package again from NVIDIA’s official software source.
Reinstall from NVIDIA
Use NVIDIA’s official driver or software download page. Select the correct graphics hardware and Windows version rather than downloading an individual DLL.
During installation:
- Start the NVIDIA installer.
- Choose Custom installation if the option appears.
- Review the available components.
- Select the nView or desktop-management component when it is offered and appropriate for the hardware.
- Use a clean-install option only when the installer presents it and you have already noted your current NVIDIA settings.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart the computer.
Do not assume that every current NVIDIA driver package contains legacy nView. The exact component depends on the hardware generation and package. For supported current professional NVIDIA systems, RTX Desktop Manager may be the appropriate successor. For an older system that specifically needs nView, use NVIDIA’s legacy software path rather than a third-party DLL site.
If the installer does not offer nView, that may mean the component is not supported by that package. In that case, remove the stale nView startup item or application reference rather than forcing an old DLL into a new driver installation.
When a driver package is involved, manually hunting through several hardware and Windows combinations can be error-prone. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated driver packages and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the issue, while the full version performs the driver installation.

Restoring an obsolete component is unnecessary if you do not use nView’s window-management features. Removing the component and its stale references is usually cleaner.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager or related NVIDIA desktop-management entries.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable any remaining nView or obsolete NVIDIA desktop-manager startup entry.
- Right-click the entry and select Open file location if available.
- Remove the shortcut only if it clearly belongs to the uninstalled component.
Do not delete random NVIDIA folders manually. NVIDIA graphics drivers and control-panel components may share directories. Use the original uninstaller or the Installed apps entry whenever possible.
If the error appears only because of an old shortcut, scheduled task, or application that you no longer use, uninstalling that application may be the correct fix. If the caller remains, identify it through the error dialog or Event Viewer before deleting anything else.
Fix 5: Check for a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch
Public file inventories report different nvwrsel.dll sizes, versions, and architectures. Those listings are not an authoritative NVIDIA compatibility matrix, so do not use a reported file size or version as a universal target.

Architecture still matters:
- A 32-bit application requires the compatible 32-bit component.
- A 64-bit application requires the compatible 64-bit component.
- A 64-bit replacement is not automatically interchangeable with a 32-bit file.
- Copying the file between
System32,SysWOW64, and an application folder can create additional conflicts.
The safest way to resolve an architecture mismatch is to reinstall the NVIDIA package that matches the calling application, graphics hardware, and Windows installation. Do not solve it by placing copies in multiple folders.
If the program is very old, check whether it has a current update or a supported replacement. An old application may still reference an nView component that a newer NVIDIA package no longer includes.
Fix 6: Repair the application or game that calls the DLL
There is no reliable list of specific games or applications that use nvwrsel.dll. The trigger is more likely to be an NVIDIA nView executable, shell extension, control-panel component, or startup entry.
If one application consistently produces the message:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Locate the application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If the error remains, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official source.
For a game launcher, use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function before reinstalling Windows components. If the game installed its own old NVIDIA integration, reinstalling that game remains the definitive repair for that installation.
Fix 7: Remove a stale startup or registry reference
A missing-file message can persist after software has already been removed. Windows may still be trying to start an old executable.
First check Task Manager → Startup apps and Settings → Apps → Installed apps. Also inspect Task Scheduler:
- Open Start and type Task Scheduler.
- Open the application.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for clearly labelled NVIDIA nView or desktop-manager tasks.
- Open a task’s Actions tab before changing it.
- Disable or remove a task only when its path clearly points to software you intentionally uninstalled.
Avoid deleting registry keys as a first step. An incorrect registry change can disable unrelated NVIDIA software. If a leftover reference cannot be identified safely, reinstall the owning application, remove it through its uninstaller, or use the application vendor’s support procedure.
Fix 8: Use DISM and SFC only for wider Windows corruption
nvwrsel.dll is a third-party NVIDIA file, so System File Checker normally is not the primary repair. Use Windows repair commands when other protected Windows files are also failing, Windows features are damaged, or several unrelated system errors appeared together.

Microsoft’s recommended order is DISM first, followed by SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling an NVIDIA-owned DLL.
If you repeatedly run these commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version.
If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, run Windows Update, restart, and repeat the Microsoft-recommended sequence once. If the only remaining error names nvwrsel.dll, return to the NVIDIA repair or removal steps.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 nvwrsel.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no NVIDIA documentation establishing that nvwrsel.dll should be registered this way. A registration attempt may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer in nvwrsel.dll failed” and will not restore a missing dependency or repair a damaged nView installation.
This is a component-repair problem, not automatically a COM-registration problem.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading nvwrsel.dll from a random DLL website is the wrong repair for several reasons:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The file may contain malware or tampered code.
- Its version may not match the installed NVIDIA component.
- Its architecture may be wrong for the calling program.
- It may lack the expected NVIDIA signature.
- It may be placed in a directory where it creates a DLL-hijacking risk.
- The real problem may be a missing dependency or stale startup reference.
- Copying it into
System32,SysWOW64, a game folder, or an application directory can create version conflicts.
Use NVIDIA’s official driver and desktop-management software sources instead. Restore a quarantined file only after verifying its provenance, or reinstall the complete component so its related files and dependencies match.
When to use System Restore or a security scan
System Restore is a later option if the error began immediately after a driver rollback, cleanup operation, or software change and no safer repair is available. Create or confirm a restore point before making major changes when possible.
Run Microsoft Defender Offline or another reputable security scan if:

FAQ
Is nvwrsel.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with NVIDIA nView Desktop and Window Manager and is not a normal Windows system DLL.
Is nvwrsel.dll safe?
A genuine copy from an NVIDIA installation can be legitimate, but the filename alone proves nothing. Check its original path, digital signature, and antivirus status.
Can I download nvwrsel.dll separately?
No. Reinstall the matching NVIDIA nView, RTX Desktop Manager, or graphics-driver component instead.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no substantiated reason to install those runtimes specifically for this NVIDIA file. Repair the NVIDIA component first.
Is nView still required?
Only if you use software that depends on it or need its desktop and window-management features. If it is obsolete, uninstall it and remove its stale startup reference.
Will SFC repair nvwrsel.dll?
Usually not. SFC targets protected Windows files, while nvwrsel.dll belongs to NVIDIA software. Use SFC when broader Windows corruption is present.
Is nvwrsel.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public inventories report differing architectures and metadata, but NVIDIA does not provide a definitive public architecture matrix for every release. Install the component matching the calling application and NVIDIA package instead of relying on a download listing.
What if the error remains after reinstalling NVIDIA software?
Check the exact executable shown in the error, inspect Event Viewer under Windows Logs → Application, and determine whether the caller is an old application, shortcut, scheduled task, or remaining startup entry. The caller determines the next repair.
