“Available today” meant June 7, 2024—not a new launch announcement. Dark and Darker is back on Steam and is currently listed as a free-to-play Early Access game, with an optional paid Legendary Status DLC.
When did Dark and Darker return to Steam?
IRONMACE’s dungeon-crawling action RPG returned to Steam on June 7, 2024. That is the release date shown on the Steam listing, which names IRONMACE as both developer and publisher. The headline “available today” referred to that 2024 return.

In a June 9, 2024 announcement, IRONMACE said, “Our launch on Epic Games and Steam marks a major milestone in the availability of Dark and Darker.” The studio also addressed confusion about the Free to Play label, saying it was trying to honor promises to earlier supporters while retaining a paid full experience. That explains the studio’s position at the time; it should not be read as a complete guide to every current feature or entitlement.

Is Dark and Darker free to play?
Yes. Steam currently lists the game as free to play and Early Access, while also noting in-app purchases. IRONMACE offers access through Steam and its own Blacksmith launcher, and identifies Legendary Status as paid DLC on its play page. The sources do not establish the DLC’s current price or specific benefits, so check the live listing before buying.

What the free Steam version includes
Steam’s free-version description says players can create up to two characters, play Normal mode on all maps, complete quests, and build a stash. Because Dark and Darker is actively developed, verify the live store page for the current terms before installing or making a purchase.
What kind of game is it?
Steam describes Dark and Darker as an “unforgiving hardcore fantasy FPS dungeon PvPvE adventure.” Its listing identifies online PvP and online co-op, so expect dungeon exploration that combines encounters with other players and the game’s environment. It is an Early Access game, not a finished release.

- Age rating: Steam lists ESRB Mature 17+ for blood and violence.
