Dark Shores is a young adult fantasy novel about a forbidden voyage that draws a pirate’s daughter into an empire’s invasion plans. It is the first book in Danielle L. Jensen’s Dark Shores series, though the publisher says readers can start with either Dark Shores or its companion novel, Dark Skies.
What is Dark Shores about?
For generations, the Endless Seas have separated two continents. The Celendor Empire rules the eastern lands, while the Maarin are the only people who know how to cross to the west. Teriana, a seventeen-year-old Maarin and daughter of a pirate, breaks the prohibition against connecting the continents. When her crew is imprisoned, she is compelled to guide Marcus, a young imperial commander, and his legions across the sea.

The voyage serves Celendor’s invasion, but the lands beyond the sea are not simply waiting to be conquered: they have their own powers, including a warlord who wields forbidden magic. Teriana’s decision puts her people in danger and strains her uneasy alliance with Marcus. Macmillan’s description emphasizes the book’s high-seas adventure, pirates, blackmail, assassination attempts, gods, slow-burning romance, and struggle for the crown. Macmillan’s Dark Shores listing identifies it as a Tor Teen young adult fantasy for ages 13–18; Publishers Weekly describes it as a blend of romance, epic fantasy, and military strategy, and recommends it for ages 13 and up. That age recommendation is the reviewer’s, not a formal content rating. Publishers Weekly review.

The story brings together seafaring adventure, imperial conflict, romantic tension, and magic. The ocean crossing is central to the plot: Teriana’s knowledge is what enables Marcus’s forces to reach the west, making the voyage both an adventure and a political choice with consequences for her people.

Macmillan reproduces a School Library Journal comparison to Tricia Levenseller’s Daughter of the Pirate King, Alexandra Christo’s To Kill a Kingdom, and Natalie C. Parker’s Seafire. What is the Dark Shores series reading order?
Macmillan explicitly allows either of the first two novels to come first. Its suggested sequence is:
Rank #2
- Dark Shores or Dark Skies (either order)
- Gilded Serpent
- Scorched Earth
Dark Shores follows Teriana and Marcus; Dark Skies follows Lydia and Killian. The first two books tell connected parts of a larger story, rather than forming a strict one-before-the-other sequence. Macmillan’s book listing includes its suggested order.

Yes. The publisher says either novel may be read first. The author explains that she originally conceived Dark Shores and Dark Skies as one novel with four points of view, then split it into two books: one centered on Marcus and Teriana, the other on Lydia and Killian. Gilded Serpent brings all four viewpoints together.
Readers who want the two opening stories to unfold together can use Jensen’s tandem reading guide, which combines them into a multi-viewpoint experience. It is an optional approach, not required to follow the publisher’s suggested series order. Jensen’s series page and tandem reading guide.
