For a broad PvE playthrough of the original Dark Souls ruleset, Ring of Favor and Protection and Havel’s Ring are the strongest all-around choices—but neither is automatically right for every character. Favor and Protection boosts three core limits but breaks if removed; Havel’s Ring is valuable when its extra equipment burden changes your movement or roll class. This is an editorial ranking, not an official tier list, and specialized builds can produce a different order.
How this ranking works
The ranking is aimed at a normal PvE playthrough, not optimized PvP or a single build. It weighs usefulness across builds, effect size, ring-slot opportunity cost, when and how reliably a ring can be acquired, any drawback or irreversibility, and specialized value. The game allows two rings at a time, so an excellent effect still has to compete with the alternative for that slot.

The 15 best rings, ranked
1. Ring of Favor and Protection
Why it ranks first: The Dark Souls Wiki says it raises maximum HP, stamina, and equipment burden by 20% each. Those benefits can matter to characters of many builds, making this one of the most impactful general-purpose choices. Dark Souls Wiki: Ring of Favor and Protection.

The trade-off: Unequipping it destroys the ring and removes it from inventory. Treat wearing it as a permanent decision, not a flexible swap. That cost keeps it from being an unquestioned pick for every run.
2. Havel’s Ring
Why it ranks this high: It raises maximum equipment burden by 50%, according to the Dark Souls Wiki. That can let you carry heavier armor or weapons while staying in a movement and roll class you prefer. Dark Souls Wiki: Havel’s Ring.
Load is not just a carrying-capacity convenience: the equipped-weight ratio determines movement and roll class. The cited thresholds are light at or below 25%, medium above 25% through 50%, and heavy above 50% through 100%. Havel’s Ring is most valuable when the added burden actually crosses a useful equipment threshold; if your current load already suits you, another effect may be better. Dark Souls Wiki: Equipment Load.
3. Cloranthy Ring
Faster stamina regeneration is useful to a wide range of characters because stamina supports actions such as attacking, blocking, and evading. It is a strong alternative when you do not need more equipment burden or prefer not to commit to Ring of Favor and Protection.

The Dark Souls Wiki ring index lists the Wolf Ring as providing +40 poise. Poise can help a character withstand interruptions from enemy attacks, so it is especially relevant to builds that want to keep acting under pressure. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.
5. Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring
This is a damage pick for spellcasters, not a universal ring. The Dark Souls Wiki reports a 20–24% increase to sorcery and pyromancy damage depending on the spell. A sorcerer or pyromancer who relies on eligible spells may value it more highly than the general-purpose rings above; a character who does not use those spells gets no corresponding benefit. Dark Souls Wiki: Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring.
6. Covetous Silver Serpent Ring
The ring index lists a 20% increase to souls gained. That makes it useful when deliberately farming or when extra souls are the immediate goal, but its value depends on what you are doing: it does not improve your ability to fight or survive directly. Consider swapping it in for a farming session rather than assuming it belongs in both slots throughout the game. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.

7. Lingering Dragoncrest Ring
Rather than raising spell damage, this ring extends eligible sorcery and pyromancy effects cast while it is equipped. The Dark Souls Wiki gives the extension as 50%. That can be useful when a spell’s duration is central to your approach, but it is a build-dependent utility choice rather than a general damage upgrade. Dark Souls Wiki: Lingering Dragoncrest Ring.

8. Red Tearstone Ring
The ring index includes a low-health damage effect among the available options. A conditional damage boost can suit a player who deliberately fights near death, but the condition adds risk and makes it a less dependable recommendation for a general run. Check the ring’s exact activation condition before building around it. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.
9. Blue Tearstone Ring
The ring index also lists a low-health defensive effect. It is a situational safety net rather than a steady defense choice: its value depends on reaching the relevant health condition and on whether that protection changes the outcome of a hit. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.
10. Hornet Ring
The index lists a critical-damage effect. That can reward a playstyle built around critical attacks, but it is less broadly useful than a ring that improves everyday stamina, capacity, or survivability. Treat it as a deliberate offensive swap when critical hits are part of your plan. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.
11. Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring
Stealth is valuable when avoiding detection is more useful than directly improving combat. The ring index identifies stealth among ring effects, making this a route- or approach-specific option rather than a consistent pick for every encounter. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.
12. Ring of Steel Protection
Physical defense can be useful when incoming physical damage is the problem you need to solve. Its relative value depends on the encounter and your other equipment, so it is better treated as a defensive swap than as a default recommendation for every area. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.
13. Spell Stoneplate Ring
Elemental protection can earn a slot when an encounter’s damage type is a particular threat. The ring index lists elemental protection effects, but the benefit is inherently matchup-dependent; choose a relevant defense rather than expecting one ring to cover every kind of danger. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.

- Atmospheric Visuals: Dynamic lighting and particle effects immerse players into a dark fantasy world of ruin.

- Sword Action: Diversifies combat action allowing players to craft their own unique play style.
- Unique Online System: Evolution of trademark online multiplayer functionality that seamlessly integrates online interactions into single-player story.
14. Covetous Gold Serpent Ring
Item discovery makes this a farming tool rather than a general combat ring. It can be worth equipping when seeking drops, but the slot is usually better spent on a combat or survival effect when progressing through unfamiliar areas. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.
15. Covenant- and encounter-specific rings
Some rings serve a particular covenant, status resistance need, or boss encounter. Their practical value can be decisive in the right situation, but they are poor universal picks because their benefit is tied to that context. The ring index is the appropriate starting point for checking a candidate’s stated effect; verify its exact condition before relying on it. Dark Souls Wiki: Rings.

Which rings should you use?
For a general PvE character
Start by asking whether you are willing to make Ring of Favor and Protection’s irreversible commitment. If so, pair it with the ring that addresses your current constraint: Havel’s Ring if equipment burden affects your roll class, Cloranthy Ring if stamina recovery better supports your play, or a defensive option if a particular threat is causing trouble.
For a sorcerer or pyromancer
Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring is the damage-oriented choice described here; Lingering Dragoncrest Ring instead benefits eligible spell effects by extending their duration. Which one earns a slot depends on whether the spell you use benefits more from damage or from lasting longer. Neither is a universal upgrade for characters who do not depend on those spells.
For farming or a specific encounter
Use Covetous Silver Serpent Ring when the goal is souls and Covetous Gold Serpent Ring when seeking item drops. For a particular boss, damage type, status threat, or covenant activity, select the matching specialized ring if its effect addresses the problem. These swaps compete with your usual combat rings, so equip them for the task rather than by habit.
How to choose between your two ring slots
- Identify the bottleneck. Decide whether you need more capacity, stamina support, spell damage or duration, defense, or a farming effect.
- Check the actual effect and condition. Some rings help only at low health, against a particular damage type, while using eligible spells, or during a specific activity.
- Account for the cost of swapping. Ring of Favor and Protection breaks when removed, so do not treat it like a temporary slot-filler.
- Test the equipment-load consequence. If Havel’s Ring does not change the equipment you can carry or the movement and roll class you want, its slot may be better used elsewhere.
- Reassess for the next task. A farming ring or encounter defense may be useful temporarily without being the best choice for ordinary exploration.
