If Dark and Darker crashes after an update, start with IRONMACE’s two general checks: update your graphics driver and look for conflicts with certain background programs. The title “Playtest #4” does not identify a confirmed crash-causing update, so these are diagnostic steps—not a guaranteed fix. First work out whether the failure happens during an update, at launch, in a match, or when returning to the lobby.
First, identify which update and failure you mean
“Playtest #4” is ambiguous. IRONMACE published an announcement titled Early Access Wipe #4 on June 7, 2024, describing season changes; it does not identify a crash-specific defect or remedy. That announcement alone does not establish that it is the update behind your crash.
Before attributing the problem to an update, record the exact update or build, any error message or code, whether you use Blacksmith or Steam, your Windows version and hardware, and when the failure occurs. These details help distinguish a game crash from a launcher or update error.
If the game crashes at launch or during play
IRONMACE’s support article, “Crash occurs while launching or playing the game,” updated August 20, 2024, identifies graphics-driver compatibility and conflicts with certain programs as common crash checks. It does not confirm that any one of these caused your issue.

Update your graphics driver
Check for an up-to-date driver for your graphics hardware. IRONMACE names driver compatibility as a common crash cause but does not endorse a particular GPU or driver utility in this guidance.
Check for conflicts with background software
Temporarily close or disable the programs IRONMACE names, then test whether the crash still occurs. Change one thing at a time where practical so you can identify whether a change affects the issue.

For OBS Studio, the support guidance also calls out the obs-studio-hook graphics-hook file path. Treat this as a troubleshooting lead, not evidence that OBS—or another named program—is responsible for your crash. See IRONMACE’s crash troubleshooting guidance for the details.
If you see “One or more game files are abnormal!”
This specific IRONSHIELD message is an integrity error. IRONMACE’s July 9, 2025 instructions recommend repairing or verifying files through the launcher you use:

- Steam: open the game’s Properties, go to Installed Files, and select the game-file integrity verification option.
These steps address the abnormal-files message; they are not presented as a universal remedy for every crash. Follow IRONMACE’s instructions for the integrity error if the message appears.
If the launcher fails while updating
An update that will not download, install, or finish is different from the game closing after it has launched. IRONMACE’s installation and update guide, dated September 12, 2024, lists several possible explanations for update errors. Check these only when the launcher is reporting an update problem, and use the exact error code to narrow down the cause.

- An unstable network connection
- A connection blocked by antivirus software or an internet service provider
- Game files being used by another program
- Insufficient disk space
The guide does not establish which explanation applies without the error details. Consult IRONMACE’s install, uninstall, and update guide for its update troubleshooting steps.

If the supported checks do not resolve the issue, send support a concise description that separates observed facts from theories. Include the exact build or update, launcher, Windows version, hardware, crash message or code, and whether the failure happens at startup, in a match, or when returning to the lobby. If the launcher itself fails, include its update error code. This gives support a clearer starting point than saying only that the game crashes after “Playtest #4.”

A Reddit report about startup crashes after Hotfix 108-1 says support identified HWiNFO64 as a possible anti-cheat conflict. That is one community anecdote, not general IRONMACE guidance or confirmation that HWiNFO64 explains other crashes. Keep it secondary to the official driver and software-conflict checks.
