Dark Souls: Remastered has online co-op, invasions and asynchronous player messages; it is designed to be challenging, though difficulty varies by player. A secondary report puts a main-story run at about 26.5 hours. Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III belong to the same series and lore world, but the publisher’s series page does not spell out exactly how directly their plots continue the first game.

Does Dark Souls have multiplayer?

Yes. Dark Souls: Remastered supports online multiplayer, but it is not simply a standard lobby-based co-op game. Its online systems include cooperative summoning, hostile invasions and asynchronous features. The publisher’s Remastered page describes single-player and online multiplayer with dedicated servers; the game manual explains how its network features work.

Co-op summoning

Players can use a summon sign to invite another player into a world for cooperative play. Summoning depends on in-game conditions and the host’s state, so help is not available as unrestricted drop-in co-op at any moment.

Invasions and other online features

Players can also enter another player’s world as a hostile invader. Messages left by players and traces of other players provide asynchronous online interactions; they do not require both players to be present together.

How difficult is Dark Souls?

It is an intentionally challenging action RPG, but there is no universal difficulty score that captures every player’s experience. The game asks players to learn enemy patterns, approach combat deliberately and explore carefully. Familiarity with that style can affect how demanding it feels.

Bandai Namco’s official Dark Souls page uses promotional language describing “days of game play and an even more punishing difficulty level.” That is the publisher’s characterization, not an independent measurement. In a 2011 PlayStation Blog interview, director Hidetaka Miyazaki discussed the challenge of making difficulty demanding without turning it into punishing frustration that drives players away.

Is Dark Souls connected to Dark Souls II and III?

Yes in the broad sense that all three games belong to the Dark Souls series and share its lore world. Bandai Namco’s Dark Souls Trilogy page presents Dark Souls: Remastered, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin and Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades as one series journey, describing a universe with deeply rooted lore and calling Dark Souls III the series’ final journey.

That official overview does not explain precisely how directly either sequel’s main plot follows the first game. It supports the series and lore-world connection, but not a detailed account of plot continuity or chronology.

Do you need to play Dark Souls before Dark Souls III?

The official trilogy page establishes that the games are part of the same series, but it does not state a required play order or explain how much plot knowledge Dark Souls III assumes. If understanding the series’ broad lore connections matters to you, playing in release order is a straightforward choice; the available publisher overview does not establish that it is mandatory.

Is Dark Souls a sequel to Demon’s Souls?

No. Bandai Namco describes Dark Souls as a “spiritual successor” to Demon’s Souls, rather than a sequel, and identifies Lordran as the setting of Dark Souls. The publisher’s framing appears on its official Dark Souls page.

Which edition includes the original game and its expansion?

For this game, the directly relevant release is Dark Souls: Remastered. Bandai Namco says it includes the main game and the Artorias of the Abyss DLC. The publisher announced the Remastered release for PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Windows in January 2018; check the platform and edition listing for your region before purchasing.

The Dark Souls Trilogy collection is another option if you want all three games. Its official listing identifies PS4 and Xbox One; confirm current availability and compatibility with your particular platform and region.
