dataview.dll errors usually appear as: “The program can’t start because dataview.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “dataview.dll was not found” or “dataview.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The important point is ownership: dataview.dll is normally the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Data View component, not a standard Windows DLL and not the main VB6 runtime. The safest repair is usually to identify the program requesting it and repair or reinstall the licensed Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 6 installation that supplied the file.

Which fix applies to you
Use the row that best matches what you see:
| What you observe | Most appropriate action |
|---|---|
VB6.EXE or a Visual Studio 6 tool reports the error |
Repair or reinstall the Visual Basic 6 IDE |
| The file is absent from the VB6 installation directory | Restore the parent VB6 installation, not a random DLL |
| The file disappeared after antivirus activity | Check quarantine and protection history |
| The file exists but still will not load | Check dependencies, architecture, and the complete VB6 installation |
| Several unrelated Windows components are failing | Run DISM, then SFC |
| A compiled VB6 application reports the error | Identify whether it privately bundled this file; most applications need the VB6 runtime instead |
| The error started after a graphics, storage, or chipset change | Check the relevant driver, but do not assume a driver supplies dataview.dll |
Do not begin by copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32, installing Visual C++ Redistributables, or running regsvr32 repeatedly. Those actions do not normally restore the VB6 Data View component.

The file is identified as:
- Description: Visual Basic DataView Window
- Product: Visual Basic DataView
- Publisher: Microsoft Corp
- Architecture: 32-bit Win32
- Usual owner: Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 6
- Typical directory:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98DATAVIEW.DLL
The exact location can differ between installations, editions, and installation media. The known file information commonly associated with this component is 32-bit version 6.0.0.8169, approximately 0.52 MB, but file builds can vary. Do not use a file version alone to decide whether an unfamiliar copy is safe.

dataview.dll belongs to the VB6 IDE’s Data View feature. It is not normally required by an ordinary compiled Visual Basic 6 application while that application is running.
It is not the VB6 runtime
Do not confuse dataview.dll with msvbvm60.dll.
dataview.dllis an IDE component associated with Data View.msvbvm60.dllis principally part of the Visual Basic 6 execution runtime.- Installing the VB6 runtime does not normally restore the IDE’s Data View file.
Microsoft distinguishes the unsupported VB6 development environment from the supported VB6 runtime files in its Visual Basic 6 support policy. The IDE is 32-bit and runs under WOW64 on 64-bit Windows, while the runtime has separate support guidance.
Fix 1: Confirm which program is requesting the file
Before repairing anything, establish whether the message comes from VB6 or another application.
- Read the title bar and the first line of the error.
- Select Start, type Task Manager, and open it.
- Select Details.
- Look for the program that was launching when the error appeared.
- Right-click the process, if it is visible, and choose Open file location.
- Note the parent program’s folder and executable name.
If the requesting program is VB6.EXE, or another Visual Studio 6 development tool, repair the VB6 installation. If a game, business program, or installer reports the error, do not assume it uses Microsoft’s copy. That application may have shipped a private file with the same name, although the known Microsoft file is primarily associated with Visual Basic Data View.
Also check whether the error occurs only when opening the Data View window. If VB6 otherwise starts and the failure is limited to that feature, the problem is likely isolated to the IDE component rather than the entire Windows installation.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the licensed VB6 IDE
This is the most likely solution when the file is missing from the VB98 directory or VB6.EXE displays the message.
Check the expected directory
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98
- Look for
DATAVIEW.DLL. - If File Explorer hides extensions, select View, Show, and enable File name extensions.
- Right-click the file, if present, select Properties, and inspect the Details tab.
A present file that still fails to load is not necessarily healthy. It may be damaged, incompatible with a dependency, or from a different installation than the one launching VB6.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reinstall from authorized media
Use the original licensed Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 6 installation media, or an authorized subscriber source.
- Close VB6 and every Visual Studio 6 process.
- Back up your VB6 projects and custom templates.
- Insert the original installation media or open the authorized installer.
- Start
SETUP.EXE. - Choose the maintenance, repair, or reinstall option if the installer provides one.
- Keep the original installation directory unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Allow the installer to restore the IDE files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch VB6 and open the Data View feature.
If the installer offers only removal and installation, uninstalling the IDE can remove associated settings and components. Make sure you have the original product media, license information, and any required service packs before removing an existing installation.
Microsoft’s public Visual Basic 6.0 Service Pack 6 Cumulative Update is an update, not a complete replacement for the VB6 IDE. Apply the update after restoring the base installation when it is appropriate for your licensed copy.
If you no longer have the installer
Do not download a standalone dataview.dll from a DLL collection site. Microsoft does not provide a general standalone download for this IDE file. Look for the original licensed media or an authorized Visual Studio subscription source instead. Microsoft Q&A notes that the original VB6 IDE is not generally offered as a free public download; the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 documentation hub provides product context but is not an IDE installer.
Copying a file from another computer is only reasonable when all of the following are true:
- The other computer has the same licensed VB6 edition and service-pack level.
- The file comes from its genuine VB6 installation.
- The file’s provenance is clear.
- You understand that copying it will not restore missing registry entries or dependencies.
A complete repair installation is safer and more reliable.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine an application file after a scan, cleanup operation, or migration.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
DATAVIEW.DLLor the VB6 installation directory. - Do not restore the file immediately.
- Confirm that the original VB6 installer and installation are legitimate.
- If appropriate, restore the file through Windows Security.
- Repair or reinstall VB6 afterward so the complete installation is verified.
- Run another scan.
For third-party antivirus software, open its quarantine or protection-history screen and follow the same process. Do not disable security software merely to obtain a DLL. If the file was detected inside an unofficial download, discard that download and obtain the parent product from authorized media.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 4: Check whether the file exists but a dependency cannot load
Windows may mention dataview.dll even when the file itself is present. The loader can fail because another DLL, COM component, or runtime dependency cannot be loaded.
Check the following:
- Confirm that
DATAVIEW.DLLis in the VB6 installation directory. - Confirm that VB6 is launching from the same installation.
- Check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Review the VB6 installation log if one exists.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis utility from a trusted source to identify missing imports.
- Repair the entire VB6 installation rather than replacing individual dependency files.
A dependency failure can produce an “invalid” or “not designed to run on Windows” message. That wording does not prove that dataview.dll itself is counterfeit or that Windows has deleted it.
Check 32-bit compatibility
dataview.dll is a 32-bit component. A 64-bit replacement is not an appropriate substitute.
On 64-bit Windows:
- The 32-bit VB6 IDE operates under WOW64.
- The file should remain with the 32-bit VB6 installation.
- Do not move it to
C:WindowsSystem32or treatSystem32as a general DLL storage directory. - Do not replace it with a file obtained from a different architecture or product.
The parent-product installer should place the component where the IDE expects it.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a universal repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, repair a damaged binary, or solve every DLL-loading error.

- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
A missing dataview.dll cannot be registered. Even if registration succeeds, it does not prove that the file belongs to the correct VB6 build or that its dependencies are available.
Only use regsvr32 if the licensed application’s documentation specifically requires registration for this component and you are working with the correct 32-bit command. On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration utility is normally located at:
C:WindowsSysWOW64regsvr32.exe
That directory name is confusing: SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows.
For this particular file, repairing or reinstalling the complete VB6 IDE is the appropriate first action. Renaming or unregistering the file may suppress a Data View feature error, but that disables or bypasses the feature rather than repairing it.

SFC and DISM are useful when several unrelated Windows files are failing, Windows reports component corruption, or the problem began with broader system damage. They generally do not restore an application-owned VB6 IDE file.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original program again.
DISM repairs the Windows component image. SFC checks protected Windows files. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the result and continue with the VB6 product repair rather than repeatedly running the same command.
While you can manually run DISM and SFC, Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork by showing what its free scan finds; repair actions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the VB6 product when that is the actual owner.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not expect DISM or SFC to recreate C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual StudioVB98DATAVIEW.DLL. That file is normally supplied by the application installer, not protected as an ordinary Windows system component.
Offline repair from Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows will not boot normally:
- Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Command Prompt.
- Determine the Windows drive letter because it may not be
C:. - Run commands using the correct drive letter, for example:
SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:windows
DISM /image:D: /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Replace D: with the drive containing the Windows directory. These commands address Windows component problems, not the normal restoration path for the VB6 IDE.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when the timing points there
A graphics, storage, chipset, or printer driver does not normally install Microsoft’s dataview.dll. Driver work is therefore not a primary fix for a VB6 Data View error.
Investigate drivers when:
- The error began immediately after a hardware or Windows update.
- Several applications show graphics or device-related failures.
- Event Viewer identifies a device driver alongside the DLL error.
- The requesting application is a specialized tool that depends on a device driver.
To check manually:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Printers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Windows Features will not normally install the VB6 IDE component. Enabling .NET Framework, legacy components, or other optional features is not a rational first response unless the application’s own documentation specifically requires one of them.
If you are manually hunting through Device Manager for stale versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; driver installation requires the full version, and updating a driver will not replace dataview.dll when the VB6 IDE is the owner.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading dataview.dll from an unrelated DLL website creates several problems:
- The file may contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- It may be the wrong VB6 build.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- It may have been renamed from another product.
- It may require dependencies your system still lacks.
- Copying it may leave the installer state and related components damaged.
- Placing it in
System32can create conflicts with unrelated applications.
The safe sources are the original licensed Visual Basic 6 or Visual Studio 6 media, an authorized subscription source, and Microsoft’s official update pages. Microsoft’s SP6 page supplies an update, not a universal standalone replacement for this file.
Prevention after the repair
Once VB6 works again:
- Keep the original installation media and license details in a safe location.
- Keep a backup of the entire VB6 development environment and projects.
- Avoid cleanup utilities that remove old application files without showing exact paths.
- Record the VB6 edition and service-pack level.
- Let antivirus scan the original installer before running it.
- Do not move IDE DLLs into Windows system directories.
- Avoid mixing files from different VB6 installations.
- Remember that the VB6 IDE is an unsupported legacy development environment on current Windows versions, even though Microsoft provides support guidance for the runtime.
FAQ
Is dataview.dll part of Windows?
No. The known Microsoft file belongs to the Visual Basic DataView component and is normally installed with the Visual Basic 6 development environment.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIs dataview.dll the VB6 runtime?
No. The VB6 runtime is principally associated with msvbvm60.dll. Installing the runtime does not normally restore the IDE’s Data View component.
Does every VB6 application need this file?
Usually not. A compiled VB6 application generally needs the supported VB6 runtime and any controls or libraries supplied by its application vendor. dataview.dll is associated with the IDE’s Data View feature.
Should I put it in System32?
No. Keep the file with the VB6 installation that supplied it. A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows runs through WOW64 and does not need an arbitrary copy in System32.
Will regsvr32 dataview.dll fix the error?
Usually not. Registration is not a universal DLL repair, and it cannot help when the file is missing. Repair the complete VB6 installation instead.

Will SFC or DISM restore the file?
Normally no. They repair protected Windows components and the Windows component image. They are useful when broader Windows corruption is present, not as a replacement for the VB6 installer.
What if VB6 starts but Data View does not?
That points to an IDE component or dependency problem. Confirm the file’s presence, inspect the application log and Event Viewer, and repair the VB6 installation. Disabling Data View can avoid the symptom, but it is not a complete repair.
What if the original VB6 media is unavailable?
Do not use a random DLL download. Locate the licensed installation media or an authorized subscription source. Microsoft’s public SP6 download is an update and does not replace the full IDE installer.
