Yes—Roblox now uses selfie-based facial age estimation to determine who can access chat where chat is available. The check is not a universal requirement to play every Roblox experience. However, users who want chat and certain other age-gated features must complete an approved age check, using a selfie-style video, government-issued ID, or—where applicable—linked-parent controls.
Roblox’s selfie option estimates an age group rather than proving an exact date of birth. As of August 18, 2026, Roblox says age checks have rolled out globally wherever chat is available.

What Roblox’s selfie age check does
Roblox is moving beyond relying only on the birthday entered when an account is created. Its system can use facial age estimation to place a user into an age band. The selfie route uses a short, selfie-style video that is processed by Roblox’s current third-party vendor, Persona.

Roblox first announced the broader expansion on September 4, 2025. Age checks for communication began rolling out in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands in early December 2025, followed by a global announcement on January 7, 2026. Roblox says the requirement now applies globally wherever chat is available.
Is submitting a selfie mandatory?
It is functionally required for chat, but not for Roblox as a whole. Roblox describes age checks as optional because users can decline them. The consequence is that features requiring an age check remain unavailable.
- You can generally continue using Roblox experiences that do not require the check.
- You must complete an approved age check to access chat where chat is available.
- Age checks may also support Restricted Content, unfiltered chat with Trusted Friends and Team Create collaboration, depending on region, account settings and rollout status.
Users are not all required to submit a selfie specifically. Eligible users may instead use ID verification, and a linked parent may have account-management options for a child.

That is a safety layer, not a guarantee that every unsafe contact is impossible.
How to complete Roblox’s selfie check
Use Roblox’s official account settings rather than a link from a message or an unofficial verification service.
- Log in to the Roblox account.
- Open Settings.
- On desktop, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner.
- On mobile, select More (…) in the lower-right corner, then Settings.
- Open Account info.
- Select Age Group.
- Choose Continue with selfie.
- Follow the camera prompts and keep the account holder in front of the camera.
The process requires a working camera. If you begin on a computer without a webcam, Roblox may show a QR-code option that transfers the process to a phone.

For a child’s account, the child—not the parent—should be in front of the camera. A parent completing the scan with their own face could produce an incorrect result.

Roblox’s support documentation lists these age bands:

Roblox’s public materials sometimes describe the youngest category as “under 9” and use labels such as Roblox Kids and Roblox Select. The exact presentation can vary by product or region.
How age-based chat works
Roblox says users are generally placed into age-based communication groups. By default, users can chat with people in their own group and adjacent groups. For example, Roblox says a user in the 9–12 group may communicate with users in the under-9 and 13–15 groups.
Trusted Connections can create limited exceptions for people known to the child, such as a parent, sibling or approved friend. These controls do not mean that age separation is irrelevant; they provide a narrower route for approved relationships.

What happens to the selfie?
Roblox says Persona captures and analyzes the selfie-style video to estimate age. According to Roblox’s stated privacy practices:
- The facial images and video are securely processed and then deleted.
- Roblox says it does not receive or store biometric data from the facial-age-estimation process.
- Roblox says it does not sell users’ image data.
- The resulting age category or account status is used to configure features.
These are Roblox’s stated policies, not an independent audit presented here. It is also important not to treat selfie estimation and ID verification as identical. The selfie route supplies facial media for age estimation; the ID route involves government identification and a camera-based comparison.
Roblox identifies Persona as the processor for the facial age-estimation media. Persona’s role in the selfie route is to estimate age, not to establish the user’s identity in the way government-ID verification does.
What if Roblox guesses the age incorrectly?
Facial estimation can place a baby-faced adult or older teenager into a younger band. Roblox says the following correction routes are available:
- Users aged 13 or older: Use government-ID verification through the account’s age-check flow.
- Child accounts: A linked parent can update the child’s birthday through parental controls. Roblox says this correction can be made only once.
- Users self-reported as over 13 but estimated under 13: Roblox says they receive a 48-hour grace period before the age-group change becomes official, unless they accept the result immediately.
- No usable estimate: Roblox says the user may need to complete ID verification if eligible.
- Later mismatch signals: Roblox may ask a user to repeat an age check if later signals suggest the account age does not match the person using it.
Roblox says testing by the U.K. Age Check Certification Scheme produced a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18. That is an average test result—not a promise that every user will be classified within 1.4 years or placed in the correct Roblox age band.
Selfie, ID or parent controls: which option fits?

If you do not want to submit a selfie
You can decline the selfie check and continue using features that do not require an age check. The practical cost is losing access to chat and other restricted features that Roblox places behind age verification.

If you are at least 13, ID verification may be an alternative. For a child’s account, a linked parent may be able to manage the account through parental controls. Availability can vary by region and account settings.
Changing regions or using a VPN is not a reliable workaround. Roblox told the U.K. communications regulator Ofcom that its global rollout is intended to prevent a VPN from evading the check.
Troubleshooting Roblox age checks
“Continue with selfie” is missing
Check the official path: Settings → Account info → Age Group. Depending on the account and region, Roblox may instead show Continue with ID, Verify My Age or a parental-control route. If no option appears, contact Roblox Support. Do not pay a third party claiming it can verify the account.
The camera or scan fails
- Use a device with a working camera and allow camera access.
- Follow the live prompts; the process may request video rather than a static image.
- Keep the correct account holder in front of the camera.
- Use the QR-code transfer option if the computer has no webcam.
- If Roblox cannot estimate the age, use ID verification if the user is eligible.
Good lighting and keeping the face visible are sensible steps, but Roblox’s documented fallback for an unsuccessful estimate is the ID route where available.
You received an incorrect 18+ result
Roblox says users can follow its separate age-change instructions to undo an age-checked status. Use the current Help Center flow because account menus can change.
What parents should know
Age checks are not a substitute for parental controls. A linked parent should review the child’s communication settings, understand which age group Roblox has assigned, and keep the child in front of the camera during any check.
Parents should also treat the one-time birthday-correction limit seriously. If a child is misclassified, use the official correction route rather than repeatedly attempting facial scans or entering a parent’s details.
Bottom line
Roblox now requires an age check for chat where chat is available, and a selfie-style video is one way to complete it. The selfie estimates an age group; it does not prove an exact birthday. Roblox says the facial media is deleted after processing and that it does not store biometric data from this process, but those are company-stated privacy practices. If the estimate is wrong, users aged 13 and older can generally use ID verification, while linked parents have a limited correction route for children’s accounts.
