dav3_32.dll is an old 32-bit component of Herd Software’s DaVinci Graphics Library, used for graphics import, export, and format conversion. It is an application library, not a Windows system DLL, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the program that originally installed it.
Do not download a random copy and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. The correct file must match the application’s 32-bit architecture, release, and related DaVinci components.
Fix 1: Identify the program that needs dav3_32.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The filename alone cannot identify the parent application. Older third-party software may have bundled this library, and different programs can contain different copies.
Start with the exact error message. Note:
- The program name shown in the window
- Whether the message says “missing,” “not found,” or “could not be loaded”
- The path shown in any detailed message
- Whether the problem started after an update, reinstall, cleanup, antivirus detection, or moving the program

- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the program’s executable.
- Select Open File Location if available.
Look in that application folder for dav3_32.dll. Also check the program’s installer folder, backup folder, or quarantine records. Do not assume a copy elsewhere on the computer is suitable.
If you cannot identify the application, use Task Manager:
- Reproduce the error.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Open Processes or Details.
- Look for the program that failed.
- Right-click it and select Open file location, if the process remains visible.
A message stating “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean dav3_32.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another dependency is missing or incompatible.
Fix 2: Repair the parent application
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Once you know which program is failing, repair that program before touching Windows components.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If the program has no Advanced options or Repair button, use its own installer:
- Download or locate the original installer from the application vendor.
- Run it.
- Choose Repair, Modify, or Install, depending on what it offers.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Test the application.
Windows 10 and classic desktop applications
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart the program.
If the application came from a game launcher or software manager, open that launcher and use its Verify files, Repair, or equivalent option.
The repair worked if the application starts without the dav3_32.dll message. If repair reports that files are missing or cannot be replaced, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original installer. Back up the application’s documents or settings first if necessary.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software may have deleted or quarantined the library. Restore it only after confirming that the file belonged to the legitimate application installation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry that names
dav3_32.dll. - Check the original file path and detection details.
- Compare that path with the affected application’s installation folder.
If the file was inside the legitimate program directory and the application was installed from a trusted source, use Actions > Restore only if you are confident it is a false detection. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect the file again after restoration.
After restoring it:
- Open Windows Security.
- Run a Quick scan.
- Start the affected application.
- If it fails again, do not repeatedly restore the file. Repair or reinstall the complete application instead.
A file with the right name is not automatically safe. An unknown copy, a file in a temporary download folder, or a copy with an unexpected path should be treated as suspicious.
Fix 4: Reinstall the correct 32-bit application release
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
DAV3_32.DLL identifies a 32-bit DaVinci component. That does not mean it belongs in a Windows system directory. The application may expect it beside its own executable.
A 64-bit replacement is not interchangeable with the 32-bit library. A Standard-library variant, a different DaVinci release, or a file from another application may also fail.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To reinstall safely:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original vendor installer.
- Install the same application edition and architecture previously used.
- Start the program before copying back custom files or plugins.
If the application is discontinued, look for the original installation media, an archived installer supplied by the vendor, or a supported replacement application. Do not substitute a DLL from a different product merely because its filename matches.

If several applications contain their own copies, leave each copy in its application folder. Replacing one global copy can break another program.
Fix 5: Check related DaVinci components and dependencies
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Herd’s DaVinci documentation lists related 32-bit components including:
DAV3_32.DLLfor graphics import, export, and format conversionLEON3_32.DLLfor Leonardo video-editing functionsIMAG3_32.DLL, which depends on DaVinci and Leonardo components
If the application reports that dav3_32.dll exists but still cannot load, another required DLL may be missing. This commonly produces the message “The specified module could not be found.”

Fix 6: Install Visual C++ only when the application needs it
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
DAV3_32.DLL is not the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Installing Visual C++ does not directly recreate this file.
It may help if the repaired application also requires a missing C or C++ runtime. For a 32-bit application, the relevant package is Microsoft’s official x86 Visual C++ Redistributable. Microsoft provides details on the supported packages through its latest Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
Install it only when:
- The application documentation requests it
- The installer includes it
- Another error identifies a missing Visual C++ runtime
- Application logs identify a runtime dependency
After installation, restart Windows and test the program. If the same dav3_32.dll message remains, return to the application repair or reinstall step.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components when other system files are failing
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not the normal source of an application-owned DaVinci DLL. Use them when other Windows features are also failing, Windows has widespread corruption, or system repair is recommended by separate diagnostics.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Success means DISM or SFC reports that repairs were completed, but that does not guarantee that dav3_32.dll will be restored. If the application still reports the error, reinstall the application.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make this step difficult to diagnose. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the program that owns dav3_32.dll.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the application depends on them
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics or capture application may also fail because of a damaged display, imaging, or capture driver. This is less direct than repairing the application, and a driver update will not normally create dav3_32.dll.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update:

Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver package when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for its missing DaVinci library.

Time needed: 2 minutes
Do not run:
regsvr32 dav3_32.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or COM components. There is no reliable evidence that DAV3_32.DLL is a self-registering COM or ActiveX server.
Running regsvr32 will not install a missing file, repair a wrong architecture, or restore a missing dependency. If it reports that an entry point is missing, that result is expected for a library that is not designed for registration.
Fix 10: Verify a suspicious existing copy
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
If the file exists but the program says it is damaged or “not designed to run on Windows”:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Location tab information and file path.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Select Details to verify that the signature is valid.
- Compare the location with the application’s installation directory.
You can calculate a hash from an elevated or regular PowerShell window with:
Get-FileHash "C:PathTodav3_32.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
A hash is useful when comparing the file with a known-good copy from the same application installer. It is not a universal approval list because different application releases may contain different historical builds. If the file is unsigned, unexpectedly located, or changed after a security event, remove it through the application’s uninstall process and reinstall from a trusted installer.
Causes and the matching fix
| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or damaged application installation | Repair, verify, or reinstall the parent application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Confirm the original path, then restore only a verified legitimate file |
| Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit component | Install the application’s matching release and architecture |
| Missing related DaVinci DLL | Reinstall the complete application package |
| Missing Visual C++ dependency | Install Microsoft’s x86 runtime when diagnostics identify it |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC, when broader Windows problems exist |
| Malware or tampering | Scan, remove the suspect copy, and reinstall from a trusted source |
| Obsolete application | Recover the original installer or replace the unsupported application |
FAQ
Is dav3_32.dll part of Windows?
No evidence indicates that it is a Windows system DLL. It is documented as a DaVinci Graphics Library component for 32-bit applications.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those folders are not general-purpose locations for third-party application libraries. The affected program may require the file beside its own executable.
Is dav3_32.dll a Visual C++ or DirectX file?
No. It is a DaVinci application library. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET may be separate dependencies for the parent program, but none is the direct source of this DLL.
Can I download a replacement DLL?
Avoid random DLL download sites. The file may contain malware, belong to the wrong application release, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual missing dependency unrepaired. Use the original application installer or its vendor repair process.
Do I need to register the file?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command, and this file should not be registered routinely.
Why does Windows say the specified module cannot be found when the file is present?
The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible component. Repair the complete application rather than replacing only the visible filename.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it only when the file disappeared after a recent system change and application repair is unavailable or unsuccessful. System Restore is not a replacement for obtaining the correct installer, and it is not the first fix for one missing third-party DLL.
