hooks.dll Not Found on Windows: Identify the App and Repair It

hooks.dll is not a single Windows component, so the correct fix depends on which application is requesting it. Do not download a replacement blindly: identify the program and file path first, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.

What this file actually does

hooks.dll is a third-party application DLL. Its name is reused by unrelated software, which means the filename alone cannot tell you the correct publisher, version, architecture, or security status.

An older hooks.dll is associated in public file records with GTCoach and GTek Technologies Ltd. Those records describe a historical 32-bit component, but they do not establish a universal version of the file or prove that every hooks.dll belongs to GTCoach.

AltDrag is another documented example. Its build information identifies hooks.dll as the 32-bit component and hooks_x64.dll as the 64-bit component. A file from GTCoach is therefore not a suitable replacement for AltDrag, and neither should be copied into another program’s folder.

The correct location is normally beside the application that installed the DLL or inside one of that program’s subfolders. It should not be copied automatically to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

Symptom Most likely cause Best first action
One named program stopped starting after an update Incomplete update or damaged installation Repair or reinstall that program
The error began after antivirus detection The DLL was quarantined or removed Check Protection History and verify the file’s location
hooks.dll is present, but Windows says the specified module cannot be found A dependency of the DLL is missing Reinstall the parent app and inspect its prerequisites
The error says the program is not designed to run on Windows Wrong architecture or incompatible DLL Restore the exact DLL supplied with the application
Several unrelated programs fail Broader Windows component corruption Update Windows, then use DISM and SFC
The file is in a temporary or unexpected user folder Possible unwanted or malicious software Scan the file and investigate the parent process
The problem started after moving the program folder Broken paths, missing companion files, or registry data Reinstall to the intended location

Fix 1: Identify the program and the exact file path

Before changing anything, capture the details that identify which copy of hooks.dll is involved.

  1. Read the complete error dialog. Record the application name and the exact wording.
  2. Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
  4. Note the full path of the executable.
  5. In File Explorer, search that application folder for hooks.dll.
  6. Right-click the DLL, select Properties, and check the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
  7. Record the product name, file description, company, version, and signer if those fields exist.

A legitimate application DLL is usually located in the application’s own folder or a clearly related program directory. Treat a copy in %TEMP%, an unusual folder under a user profile, a startup location, or an unexpected Windows directory with caution.

If the error appears before any application window opens, check Settings > Apps > Startup and Task Manager > Startup apps. You can also open Task Scheduler and inspect recently added tasks for a reference to the failing program or DLL.

Do not assume that a file is safe merely because it has the right name. A valid signature, expected location, and known parent application are more useful than the filename.

Fix 2: Repair the application that reports the error

This is the most likely solution when only one program fails.

Repair a modern Windows application

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the program named in the error.
  5. Select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Start the application again.

Repair normally replaces missing program files without removing personal data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset, if available. Reset can remove the application’s stored settings, so use it only after Repair fails.

Repair a classic desktop program

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
  5. Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
  6. Test the program again.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the program from the same window. Restart the computer, then reinstall it using the original installer, your organization’s approved software archive, or the application developer’s official release channel.

For a game, open its launcher and use Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair before uninstalling it. These options restore the correct files for that particular game and prevent an unrelated hooks.dll from being substituted.

What success looks like

The program should launch without the DLL message, and the restored file should appear in the application’s own installation directory. If the installer reports that another DLL is missing, follow that new dependency error rather than copying files from the internet.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove a DLL after an update or after its detection rules change.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry that names hooks.dll or the affected application.
  5. Check the detected file path and detection details.
  6. If the path belongs to the expected, trusted application, update the application and reinstall it from its official source.
  7. Restore a quarantined file only when you have verified its location, publisher, and origin.

Do not restore a file from a temporary folder or an unfamiliar startup directory merely because doing so removes the error. Choose Remove or leave it quarantined, then run Scan options > Full scan. If you suspect an active threat, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area.

A reinstall is safer than manually restoring a questionable DLL because it replaces the complete application and its companion files.

Fix 4: Correct an architecture or version mismatch

A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications. That does not mean a 64-bit DLL can replace a 32-bit one.

The known AltDrag arrangement illustrates the issue: its 32-bit component is named hooks.dll, while its 64-bit component is named hooks_x64.dll. Other applications may use a different arrangement.

Do not:

  • copy a GTCoach DLL into an AltDrag folder;
  • copy an AltDrag DLL into a game or utility folder;
  • rename hooks_x64.dll to hooks.dll;
  • copy files into System32 or `SysWOW64 to force an application to load them;
  • replace a working file with a version from an unrelated archive.

Instead, reinstall the exact application and use the installer intended for its architecture. If the program is old, check whether it requires a 32-bit release even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair a missing dependency

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hooks.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Start by reinstalling the parent program. If its documentation or installer identifies a Microsoft Visual C++ requirement, install the matching official redistributable. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows. Do not install a runtime solely because the missing filename ends in .dll.

Use the official Microsoft packages:

Older applications can require an older runtime release. Confirm that requirement from the application’s documentation or installer rather than removing existing redistributables.

If reinstalling the application and its documented prerequisites does not help, inspect the installer logs or use a reputable dependency-inspection tool to determine which module cannot load. The DLL name by itself cannot identify that dependency.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption

Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated applications fail, Windows features are malfunctioning, or the problem began with broader system corruption. They are not a direct replacement method for a third-party hooks.dll.

First install pending updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates and restart.

Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Wait for each command to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store; SFC then checks and repairs protected Windows files. Restart the computer and test the affected application.

If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it once more. If the application alone still fails, return to the application repair or reinstall steps rather than repeatedly running system scans.

Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can take time. Outbyte PC Repair can show its free scan results before any repair, while the full version performs the repair; it is optional, and reinstalling the program that owns hooks.dll remains the definitive fix.

On Windows 11, you may also have this repair option:

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  3. Select Reinstall now, if shown.
  4. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the option is available. Use System Restore instead when a restore point predates the failure and you understand that programs and settings may roll back.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the evidence points to a driver

A normal missing hooks.dll error is usually not a driver problem. Consider drivers only if the failure began after a hardware, input, display, accessibility, or peripheral change, or if Device Manager reports a related device error.

Finding the correct driver among many device models can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies, while the full version performs the installation; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns hooks.dll.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Many application DLLs do not.

Running this command is therefore unlikely to repair a missing or incompatible application component:

regsvr32 hooks.dll

It may return an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found or failed. Use registration only if the software developer explicitly instructs you to do so.

If a vendor does provide that instruction, use the full path to the DLL from an elevated Command Prompt:

regsvr32 "C:PathTohooks.dll"

Do not register it from System32 or SysWOW64, and do not copy it there first. Microsoft explains the conditions behind Regsvr32 registration errors.

Avoid unsafe DLL downloads

Downloading hooks.dll from an unverified DLL archive can introduce malware, provide the wrong architecture, or create a version mismatch. It also leaves missing companion files and registry or configuration problems unresolved.

The safe source is the installer for the application named in the error. For a legacy GTCoach installation, use the original installer or an organization’s trusted software archive. A currently available product with a similar name should not automatically be treated as the same historical GTCoach software.

FAQ

Is hooks.dll a Windows system file?

No universal Microsoft system component is established by this filename. It is used by third-party applications, and the filename is shared by unrelated programs.

Can I copy hooks.dll to System32?

No. The DLL normally belongs beside the application that uses it. Copying it to a Windows directory can create conflicts and does not repair the parent application.

Is the GTCoach file correct for every error?

No. Historical public records associate one 32-bit hooks.dll with GTCoach, but another program, such as AltDrag, uses its own component. The parent application determines which file is correct.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is visible?

A dependency of hooks.dll may be missing, or the file may be the wrong architecture or version. Reinstall the parent program and check its documented prerequisites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install DirectX or Visual C++?

Only when the application identifies that runtime as a requirement or the dependency error points to it. Neither runtime is a general replacement for hooks.dll.

What information should I provide to support?

Provide the application name, complete error text, executable path, hooks.dll path, Windows version, application architecture, file Properties details, and antivirus history. Those details identify the failing component far better than the filename alone.
