In Dave the Diver, a good early run is not about diving as deep as possible or filling every slot in your bag. Learn the shallow areas, keep enough oxygen for the return trip, and bring back ingredients you can use consistently at Bancho Sushi. Follow the main missions as you go: they introduce staff, farming, the fish farm, weapon upgrades, and deeper-water systems as they become available.

How should you plan an early dive?

Learn the controls before pushing deeper

Use the opening dives to get comfortable with movement and your available tools. A beginner guide for the mobile version specifically recommends practicing in shallow water, where you can focus on the controls without adding depth pressure. The general principle is useful on any version: get familiar with how Dave moves and interacts before taking risks farther down.

Keep oxygen for the swim back

Treat your oxygen gauge as a return-trip budget, not permission to stay underwater until it is nearly empty. Damage, fast swimming, and diving beyond the suit’s safe depth can all shorten the time you have. Decide when to turn back before chasing another fish or exploring one more area; losing the haul to an empty tank can erase the value of the extra catch. The mobile beginner guide also emphasizes saving oxygen for the ascent.

Check depth and cargo before committing

Check the suit’s safe depth before entering a deeper band. If the dive is limited by how much you can carry rather than how long you can stay down, prioritize ingredients you need and useful upgrade materials instead of collecting indiscriminately. When earnings allow, improve the constraint that is actually ending your dives—tank, suit depth, or cargo—rather than following a fixed upgrade order. Independent guides disagree on which equipment to prioritize first, so let your current bottleneck and mission objectives decide.

Which fish and materials are worth bringing back?

Favor useful catches over a full bag

Compare a catch by its star quality, meat yield, weight, recipe value, and the effort or danger involved in securing it. An independent fan guide recommends higher-star fish because they can yield more meat and sale value for the same backpack weight, and suggests non-lethal capture tools when aiming for three-star catches. These are strategy recommendations, not official developer guidance; whether a particular catch is worthwhile depends on your current recipes and equipment.

Useful upgrade materials and ingredients for dishes you can reliably serve are often better choices than filling the remaining cargo with whatever is nearby. If a mission or recipe needs a particular item, account for that before spending your limited carrying capacity elsewhere.

Do not turn every encounter into a fight

Watch an enemy and choose a tool suited to the situation. If the encounter looks unsafe or would consume the oxygen you need to escape, leave it and head upward with what you have. The fan guide’s practical advice is to put survival ahead of a small increase in the haul.

How should you choose equipment upgrades?

There is no single best early upgrade sequence established by the available guides. One favors survival improvements before capture tools or cargo; another recommends cargo first and oxygen second. Use the comparison below to choose based on what is limiting your runs.

Upgrade area What it helps with Choose it when
Oxygen tank More time to explore and return You are cutting dives short because of oxygen, or need more margin for the ascent.
Suit depth Access to deeper water within the suit’s safe range A mission or useful target requires a deeper band you cannot safely enter yet.
Cargo capacity Room to bring back more catches and materials Your bag fills before oxygen or depth becomes the main limit.
Capture or combat tools More options for acquiring catches or handling threats A target, recipe, or mission makes a particular tool valuable and you can afford it without neglecting survival.

Before spending, check whether the current mission calls for a particular capability. The best improvement is the one that addresses a real limit on the dives you want to make, not simply the next upgrade available.

How do you turn dives into steady sushi-bar progress?

Build a menu around dependable ingredients

At night, Bancho Sushi turns the day’s catches into served dishes and earnings. Keep the early menu focused on ingredients you can obtain reliably, and weigh recipe needs against catch availability and effort. An independent fan guide suggests Parrotfish Sushi as an early option, but that is a version-sensitive strategy recommendation rather than a universally best dish. Choose dishes that fit the ingredients and systems you have unlocked.

Reinvest in useful progress

As the restaurant earns money, consider whether a dish improvement or useful gear will help you make better use of future dives. Avoid spending heavily on décor simply because it is available if an equipment limit is still reducing your haul. As the main missions open more systems, staff, farming, and the fish farm can broaden how you supply the restaurant; let those unlocks inform your next steps rather than trying to optimize systems you do not have yet.

Adapt staffing as it unlocks

When staff become available, use a balanced setup suited to the restaurant’s needs instead of assuming one fixed roster is best from the start. The fan guide recommends balancing staff as systems unlock, but the right choices depend on who you have recruited and what the restaurant currently needs.

What should a new player prioritize on the next run?

  1. Check the mission and equipment. Note any required target or depth, then identify whether oxygen, safe depth, cargo, or a tool is your main constraint.
  2. Set a return threshold. Decide to head back while you still have a workable oxygen reserve, especially after taking damage or swimming quickly.
  3. Collect deliberately. Prefer ingredients for dependable dishes, useful materials, and valuable catches that fit your cargo and risk budget.
  4. Leave dangerous encounters. Do not spend the oxygen needed to return for a marginally better haul.
  5. Use the evening to build the next dive. Serve a focused menu, reinvest where it addresses a genuine bottleneck, and follow missions to unlock the next useful system.
