What “free” means on Steam
Steam’s free-to-play games are downloadable and playable without paying. Purchases are not required to play or make progress, although a game may offer optional in-game items or content. Steam’s Store listing changes over time, so check the individual game page for its current price status, platform support, and any game-specific conditions.

A free-to-play game is different from a limited-time free-to-keep offer. Steam’s general new-user instructions explain how to add and download free-to-play games; they do not establish whether every promotional offer uses the same process or whether a game remains available after its promotion ends. Step 1: Create or sign in to a Steam account
You need a Steam account to use the Store and Library. Steam lets you create one through its website or the Steam application. Follow the account-creation prompts, then sign in. Steam’s instructions are at How do I create a Steam account?

Step 2: Find a free-to-play game
Open the Steam Store and browse its free-to-play games, or search for a specific title. Open the game’s Store page and verify that it is currently listed as free to play. Check the page for supported platforms and any conditions that matter to you; the general Steam help steps do not establish the requirements or storage needs of each game. Steam’s Free to Play listing is dynamic.
Step 3: Add and install the game
- On the game’s Store page, select the free-to-play or install option shown for that title.
- Follow any prompts in the Steam client to add or download the game.
- When the download is ready, open Library and double-click the game to install and run it, following Steam’s general new-user instructions.
Steam’s support overview for new users is Information for New Users. Interface wording can vary by title and client version, so use the current controls shown on the game’s page and in the client.

Do you need a credit card or Steam Wallet funds?
No. Steam says a credit card and a subscription are not required to download and play free-to-play games. You do not need to fund your Steam Wallet for this purpose.
There is a separate account limitation to know about: Steam classifies an account with no purchased game and no funded Steam Wallet as a Limited User account. Some Steam community features are restricted for such accounts, and individual games may set their own limits. If the game does not install or launch
- Check the Store page: Confirm the title is still free to play and supports your platform.
- Check the game’s requirements: Device compatibility, storage space, and other requirements depend on the individual title; verify them on its current Store page.
- Check your Library: Steam’s general workflow is to open Library and double-click the title. If the client still presents an install or download action, follow its prompts.
- Check the offer terms: If you meant a time-limited free-to-keep promotion rather than a free-to-play game, consult that offer’s current terms. The general free-to-play instructions do not confirm how every promotion works.
