Dawn of War IV has four headline factions: Space Marines (the Blood Ravens), Orks, Necrons, and Adeptus Mechanicus. The Dark Angels are also playable in campaign missions, but as a Space Marine sub-faction—not as a fifth headline faction. The official information gives each force a campaign identity and confirms that the factions are mechanically distinct, but it does not yet support a reliable ranking of their RTS tactics or multiplayer strength.
Which factions are in Dawn of War IV?
The four headline factions are Space Marines, represented by the Blood Ravens; Orks; Necrons; and Adeptus Mechanicus. That fourth faction matters even though it is missing from the title’s short list. Warhammer Community describes Adeptus Mechanicus as a newcomer to the Dawn of War series. Warhammer Community’s announcement introduces the roster and the game’s return to mass battles and base building.
Deep Silver’s official Dawn of War IV FAQ says the game has four mechanically distinct factions, each with a unique campaign that feeds into one overarching narrative. That establishes a meaningful high-level comparison, but not the precise unit, economy, or combat differences needed to rank them.
How the factions compare in the campaign
| Faction or force | Roster status | Stated role on Kronus |
|---|---|---|
| Space Marines / Blood Ravens | One of the four headline factions | Captain Cyrus and his company return to their recruitment world, where rebuilding and receiving reinforcements are central to the conflict. |
| Dark Angels | Playable Space Marine sub-faction in campaign missions; not a fifth headline faction | Company Master Astoran and Chaplain Ezrael lead their force as it joins the fighting on Kronus. |
| Orks | One of the four headline factions | Two rival Warbosses compete to lead a major Waaagh across Kronus. |
| Necrons | One of the four headline factions | Forces arrive from an invasion fleet and from tombs beneath Kronus; Chronomancer Thothmek is named in official material. |
| Adeptus Mechanicus | One of the four headline factions | Seeks lost knowledge and artifacts on Kronus. |
These story details come from Warhammer Community’s campaign announcement. The official material places the Blood Ravens and Dark Angels in different missions, while the four headline factions each receive a campaign. It does not say that the Dark Angels have a separate, full campaign of their own.

Are the Dark Angels a separate faction?
No. They are a playable Space Marine sub-faction featured in campaign missions. The game’s four headline factions remain the Blood Ravens/Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, and Adeptus Mechanicus. Warhammer Community’s Dark Angels trailer page describes their in-game identity as ruthless precision, discipline, and experience in large-scale battles. That is a faction characterization, not enough evidence to infer particular units, bonuses, or multiplayer matchups.
What is known about their RTS play styles?
The confirmed broad frame is an RTS returning to mass battles and base building, with a Sync Kill system. Deep Silver describes the four headline factions as mechanically distinct. However, the official pages covered here do not provide enough comparable detail to explain faction economies, complete unit rosters, tactical strengths and weaknesses, or multiplayer balance.

So far, the most defensible way to compare them is by their campaign premise and roster status—not by claiming that one is the fastest, strongest, easiest, or best for a particular multiplayer role. Nor should tabletop Warhammer 40,000 rules be treated as proof of how these factions work in this RTS.
Which Dawn of War IV faction should you play?
If you are choosing based on story, the campaign setup points to a clear starting preference: choose the Blood Ravens for a returning chapter fighting for its recruitment world, the Dark Angels for a disciplined Space Marine force in selected campaign missions, the Orks for rival Warbosses chasing a Waaagh, the Necrons for an invasion tied to buried tombs, or Adeptus Mechanicus for a search for knowledge and artifacts.

If you are choosing for unit tactics or competitive multiplayer, there is not enough official comparative detail here to recommend a winner. The announced mechanical distinction means the factions are intended to play differently, but it does not reveal how those differences work or which will suit your preferred strategy.
