To become an administrator on a dedicated DayZ server, set a strong passwordAdmin value in the serverDZ.cfg file that the server actually loads, then start the server with -config= pointing to that file. For remote administration, configure BattlEye RCon separately with RConPassword and a dedicated RConPort in BEServer_x64.cfg. In-game login is useful for basic access; RCon is the documented channel for managing a server from outside the game.
This guide explains the files, launch parameters, login methods, BattlEye commands, moderation workflows, logging, security boundaries, and the failure cases that commonly prevent admin access.

What DayZ administrator access actually controls
DayZ has more than one administration layer. The credentials and commands you use depend on where you are operating:

It is intended for administration without joining the game and provides commands for player lists, kicks, bans, ban-file maintenance, messaging, and status checks.
- Admin mods: Community mods can add menus, permissions, and game-specific actions. Their setup and command names are tied to each mod and version; there is no single universal mod command set.
These methods are not interchangeable. A valid in-game admin password does not automatically configure RCon, and an RCon password does not substitute for passwordAdmin in the game-server configuration.

Set up the server configuration first
Choose the configuration file the server will load
DayZ reads the settings file specified by the launch command’s -config= parameter. Edit the selected serverDZ.cfg, not an unused copy elsewhere on disk. If several installations or profiles exist, check the command line and the server start script to identify the active file.
Place the administrator password in that file using the passwordAdmin setting. The value is a shared secret: anyone who obtains it can attempt to administer the server, so do not reuse a password from another service or publish it in a public configuration repository.
Use the related launch parameters correctly
Bohemia’s dedicated-server documentation describes three paths that are particularly important when diagnosing administration problems:

Start the Windows server with an explicit command
A practical Windows launch pattern is:
DayZServer_x64.exe -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=profiles -BEpath=battleye -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheckAdjust the executable and paths for your installation. The important part is that the command names the intended configuration, profile directory, and BattlEye directory. After editing serverDZ.cfg, restart the process; changing the file while an old process is still running does not retroactively change that process’s loaded settings.
Use the equivalent Linux layout
Bohemia’s Linux hosting guidance uses the Linux DayZServer executable and a SteamCMD-installed server. The concepts are the same: launch the executable with -config=, -profiles=, and -BEpath=, then add the logging switches you need. Confirm that the user account running the service can read the configuration and write the profile and BattlEye directories.

Log in as an administrator from inside the game
- Start the dedicated server with the configuration that contains
passwordAdmin. - Join the server as a player.
- Open the in-game chat input.
- Enter
#login YourSecretPassword, substituting the exact configured password. - Submit the message and test the administrative action available on that server.
The #login procedure is community-documented rather than a universal guarantee across every game build, server configuration, or installed mod. If it fails, first verify that you joined the intended server and that its active serverDZ.cfg contains the password you think it does. Then check the launch command and logs. A mod can also alter how administrative access is exposed, so follow the mod’s version-specific instructions instead of assuming every server accepts the same chat syntax.
Configure BattlEye RCon for remote administration
Create the BattlEye settings in the active working directory
RCon uses a separate password and configuration path. In the BattlEye working directory selected by the server’s profile and BattlEye path settings, edit BEServer_x64.cfg for the 64-bit server. Set RConPassword to a strong, unique value and assign a dedicated RConPort.
The RCon port must be different from the game server’s ports. Open only the required port in the host firewall and any upstream firewall or router, and restrict its source addresses where your hosting environment allows that. A port being reachable is not proof that authentication is configured correctly; both network access and the exact password must match.
Understand RestrictRCon
RestrictRCon controls whether RCon functions are restricted. Treat it as a policy setting, not as a replacement for a strong password or network controls. If you change it, restart the server and verify the resulting permissions with a non-destructive command such as players.

Connect with an RCon client
- Stop the server before making configuration changes, or use your host’s documented safe-reload procedure.
- Set
RConPasswordand aRConPortin the activeBEServer_x64.cfg. - Confirm that the file is in the BattlEye working directory selected by the running server, not merely in the installation root.
- Allow the chosen RCon port through the host firewall and any external firewall, while keeping it distinct from the game ports.
- Restart the DayZ server.
- In an RCon client, enter the server address, the RCon port, and the exact RCon password.
- Run
versionorplayersfirst. A successful response confirms that the remote console is reaching BattlEye and accepting the credentials.
BattlEye documents that commands can be entered in the RCon console and that commands can also run automatically at launch when placed in BEServer(_x64).cfg. Automatic commands should be limited to predictable, low-risk tasks; do not place a destructive moderation command in a startup file by mistake.

BattlEye RCon command reference
The following syntax is the documented BattlEye command set. Run commands on the live server to see what that particular release exposes if behavior changes.

Safe moderation workflows
Identify before you act
Do not guess a player number from a disconnected chat message. Run players, match the displayed number, GUID, and ping to the incident, and only then issue kick or ban. This prevents an otherwise identical-looking number from targeting the wrong player.
Kick a player with a documented reason
- Run
players. - Confirm the target’s player number.
- Send
kick [player #] [reason]. - Keep the reason concise and factual so another administrator can understand the action from the console history or logs.
Apply a temporary or permanent ban
For a connected player, use ban [player #] [time in minutes] [reason]. A missing time or a time of zero is permanent according to BattlEye’s command documentation. If the person has already disconnected, use addBan [GUID or IP] [time in minutes] [reason] with the identity you verified.
Use bans after the command to confirm the entry. When staff policy requires an external ban-file edit, run loadBans to reload it; use writeBans when you need to write the current list back to disk.

Communicate without joining the game
Send a private message with say [player #] [message]. Use say -1 [message] to broadcast to all connected players. Keep announcements specific: state the action or maintenance window, not a vague warning that creates more support requests.
When an admin mod is the better fit
A mod may provide menus, role-based permissions, teleport or gameplay actions, and a more approachable interface than raw RCon. That flexibility comes with maintenance work: the command names, configuration files, permission model, and compatibility can change between mod versions. Follow the mod author’s installation and update instructions, test changes on a controlled server, and do not assume a mod’s permissions are equivalent to BattlEye’s RCon permissions.
For a small team that only needs kick, ban, player lookup, and announcements, vanilla RCon has a smaller moving parts list. A larger staff may prefer a mod’s granular roles, but should keep a documented fallback RCon account for outages and mod-loading failures.

The in-game login command is rejected
- Check that the server was restarted after changing
passwordAdmin. - Confirm the launch command’s
-config=points to the file you edited. - Check spelling, capitalization, and hidden whitespace in the password.
- Verify that you joined the intended server instance rather than a similarly named server.
- Review logs with
-dologsand-adminlogenabled. - Consider build or mod differences: the community
#loginprocedure is not a promise that every current setup accepts the same syntax.
RCon cannot connect
- Confirm that the file is named
BEServer_x64.cfgand is in the BattlEye working directory used by the server. - Check that
RConPasswordin the file exactly matches the client value. - Verify the RCon port is open through host and network firewalls and is different from every game-server port.
- Check
-profiles=and-BEpath=so you are not editing a directory belonging to another instance. - Restart the server after configuration changes, then test with
versionorplayers. - Enable
-dologs,-adminlog, and-netlogwhile diagnosing and inspect the resulting logs.
A command runs but affects the wrong player
Run players immediately before the action and match the player number, GUID, and ping. Player numbers can change as people disconnect and reconnect; never retain an old number as a permanent identity.

Use bans to inspect the live list. If you edited a ban file while the server was running, use loadBans to reload it. If an in-memory change must be persisted, use writeBans. Check that you are operating on the active BattlEye directory rather than a backup or second server instance.

Security and audit practices
Protect passwordAdmin and RConPassword as administrator credentials. Use long, unique values, share them only through a controlled staff channel, and rotate them when a staff member leaves or a credential may have been exposed. Do not paste either password into public chat, screenshots, issue trackers, or startup scripts that are visible to untrusted users.
RCon expands the attack surface because it is a network service. Keep the port distinct from game ports, expose it only where necessary, and use firewall restrictions whenever your host supports them. Review admins for unexpected RCon administrators and preserve relevant logs when investigating incidents.
Enable -adminlog, -netlog, and -dologs during administration incidents so actions and connection behavior have a record. Pair logs with the BattlEye ban list and a simple staff policy: who can kick, who can issue permanent bans, what evidence is required, and when a ban should be reviewed.

Many communities use both in-game access and RCon: the former for actions while present in the world, the latter for moderation during incidents or maintenance. Keep the credentials and permission boundaries separate so failure in one layer does not silently grant more access in another.
